Cosmetic Surgery Getting Right! ing it Right! ery - Gitett c Su-rg
Cosmeti
WITH NUFFIELD YOU CAN BE SURE YOU ARE IN THE BEST POSSIBLE HANDS Cosmetic treatments, carried out well, can add enormously to your quality of life; not only adding to physical well-being but improving your psyche and adding to personal confidence. Recent years have seen an explosion in demand for and acceptance of cosmetic procedures, both surgical and nonsurgical. We live in a young world where people are living longer and remaining active to a much older age. Feeling fitter, more and more individuals want to keep looking fresh to make sure they enjoy life, at ease with the way they look. These are procedures of choice, carried out to change or improve appearance. However with treatments of choice it is even more important that proper counselling takes place so that treatments are based on the needs of the individual, making sure that your aspirations can be matched by surgical interventions, and that you are fully informed of the limitations and possible complications that they may carry. Proper consultation, with examination, is vital to achieve good results and happy outcomes. This should always be with the surgeon and you should never be rushed into decisions and do not proceed with treatment unless you are sure it is right for you. Consultants carrying out surgery must be on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council. Our aesthetic surgeons are Members of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS). You can view their details on the BAAPS website (www.baaps.org.uk). It is important to find a properly trained Consultant, practicing in the right environment. Procedures should be to your benefit, to improve the quality of your life. They can be life changing and must be properly considered. With Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital you can be sure you are in the best possible hands. Our aim is to provide a different kind of treatment for cosmetic surgery patients - the Nuffield Treatment. This means we can make the following promises:
Our Price Promise Our prices will always be totally transparent and when you are quoted an inclusive procedure price it will be inclusive of all costs – with no hidden surprises. This inclusive price will include your consultation fee, anaesthetist fees, hospital fees, any overnight stays, medication and take home drugs. It also includes all your follow-up appointments and after-care.
As a Nuffield Health patient, subject to the clinical needs related to your procedure, there are no time limits on your aftercare.** We offer a range of cosmetic surgery procedures including:
Surgical Procedures • Breast Augmentation • Breast Uplift • Breast Reduction • Tummy Tuck • Liposuction • Facelift • Neck Lift • Eyelid Surgery • Rhinoplasty • Otoplasty (ear correction) • Gynaecomastia (Male breast reduction)
Non-Surgical Procedures • Injections for wrinkles
Complimentary Cosmetic Events Here at the Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital we run regular complimentary cosmetic open events once a month. These events give you the opportunity to meet one of our consultants for a one-to-one advice chat that lasts ten minutes and gives you the chance to ask any questions you have regarding the specific treatment you are thinking about. For more information or to book a complimentary advice chat please contact us on 01902 275211.
If you find an alternative private hospital in your local area offering a better price for the same surgical intervention, sold with the same service conditions, we will lower our price to equal it.*
Our Treatment Promise We promise to guide and support you through every stage of your treatment at Nuffield Health. You will be looked after throughout by your Consultant. At the same time, our matron will ensure you receive the highest standard of compassionate and professional care.
Mr Darren Lewis, Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeon
Mr Naiem Moiemen, Consultant Plastic Surgeon
Our Follow Up Promise Our relationship with you doesn’t end when you walk out of one of our hospitals. *Not including private patient units at NHS Hospitals. Local are defined as within 15 miles of the Nuffield Health hospital. We will match against written quotes only. Promise is valid for patients paying for themselves. **where possible, we promise to assist you to receive any follow up advice, treatment or care that is clinically required from your Consultant for as long as you may require it. If a prosthesis is used as part of your treatment this is guaranteed for the manufacturers official lifetime of that prosthesis. “Clinically required” indicates where further intervention and/or monitoring of a patient’s condition is deemed necessary as a direct result of surgical intervention.

SI Cannock & District V Festival Clean-up 2015
ANOTHER VERY SUCCESSFUL, BUT MUDDY, V FESTIVAL AT WESTON PARK
For the last few years a collection of tents, chairs, beds, sleeping bags, un-opened food etc has been organised by Rotary International at Weston Park in the two days following the V Festival. This year, as in previous years, Soroptimist International of Cannock & District was involved.
The tents were all taken to the International Aid trucks; they will be used in disaster areas around the world. All other items this group collected will be used by Pathway, the local refuge for women victims of domestic violence and by Staffordshire Women’s Aid – in fact, many of the items collected have already been put to good use by local women who are in need.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not
just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Cannock
and Stafford areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Cannock Friends of Katharine House Hospice (CFK) ANNOUNCING A NEWLY FORMED SUPPORT GROUP We are excited to announce that Cannock has a newly formed support group who will be raising vital funds for Katharine House Hospice. Formed on 24th August 2105 the founder members are Vivienne Wooll, Doug Smith, Pam Smith and Pam Gabbitas, with more waiting to come on board. The group are already planning a major event for autumn next year: a Charity Auction, the proceeds from which will be used to “Pay for a Day” of care at Katharine House, by aiming to raise £7,400 the group would like to cover the cost of care for all our patients using hospice services for one day. There will be other smaller events during the year. Katharine House Hospice provides free care for local people living with a progressive illness and support for their families. The Hospice began as a “Hospice at Home” service in 1989 and now provides a range of free services at the Hospice and in the community. Each year it costs the Hospice £2.7m to provide care and this is largely due to the kindness and generosity of local people and business who help to provide 75% of the funds required. Over 10,000 local people have received vital free care from the hospice and with the support of the local community and groups such as Cannock Friends of Katharine House, we will be able to help 10,000 more.
If you would like to find out more about how you or your community group can help Katharine House Hospice, contact Emma Whitehurst in the fundraising team on 01785 270808, or ewhitehurst@khhospice. org.uk or visit the website www.khhospice.org.uk. If you would like to be part of Cannock Friends of Katharine House feel free to contact Vivienne Wooll on 01543 422653 or email cfk2408@hotmail.com

Don’t Worry Bee Happy IT’S EASY TO MAKE YOUR GARDEN A PARADISE FOR BEES AND OTHER HELPFUL INSECTS Most gardeners want to attract more bees to their garden: these essential pollinators are under threat from disease and habitat loss and more than ever need gardener’s help to find food and places to nest. The good news is it’s easy to make your garden a paradise for bees and other helpful insects and it doesn’t matter a hoot to bees if you plant native flowers or choose from the best the world has to offer.
Bees and early flying butterflies need food when they start to stir in February or March. Many of our favourite garden perennials make idea feeding stations. Pulmonaria (lungwort) have small bell-shaped flowers from late winter onwards and are always a-buzz with bees. Euphorbia (Spurge) often flower in early spring and attract the solitary bees that start to fly at this time. Solitary bees often nest in holes in lawns and some in holes in masonry. Geums fill the gap between spring and summer with nectar-filled bellshaped flowers.
Our garden in south Cheshire is full of the buzz of bees from February until the onset of winter and these are some of my and the bees favourites.
Once you start to feed bees and butterflies you will discover a host of wildlife in your garden. Moths like the Elephant Hawk can be found in the daytime resting on plants. Hoverflies are useful for controlling aphids and some beetles do a great job eating baby slugs. Planting many different types of flower will attract a wider range of insects. Attracting more insects will bring in the birds as well. There’s no secret: just get planting! Martin Blow Janet & I run SpecialPerennials, a small garden nursery in Hankelow Cheshire where we hold two National Plant Collections and grow a large range of plants for a nature friendly garden. Our garden was featured on BBC Gardener’s World in 2014. Our website www.specialperennials.com is full of colour photos and growing tips. We sell by mail order and at Plant Hunters’ Fairs throughout the season. For plant fair details see www.planthuntersfairs.co.uk
The daisy family have to be number one favourites with the typical disc-like centres of the flowers offering hundreds of tiny helpings of nectar and pollen to every visiting insect. Planting summer and autumn blooming types like heleniums, coneflowers (Rudbeckia and Echinacea), sunflowers (Helianthus) and Michaelmas daisies (Asters) will fill your garden with colour from July right through autumn and feed bees, butterflies and hoverflies just when they need it most. Mostly they like a sunny spot, fertile soil and some moisture in hot weather as well as regular dead heading to keep them blooming. Good companions for daisies are salvias (ornamental sage) with their spires of colourful flowers in various colours and sizes. Most are hardy and perennial but there are also annual and tender types so ask the nurseryman for advice if you’re not sure. Some salvias have long, narrow tubular flowers which bees can’t climb into – never fear they’ve come up with a solution to that by making a hole in the back of the flower and getting their long tongues into the well of nectar. 26

Stafford Grammar School and Stafford Preparatory School EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION WITH AN OUTSTANDING LEVEL OF PASTORAL CARE
Stafford Grammar School and Stafford Preparatory School offer an exceptional education with an outstanding level of pastoral care, providing the encouragement and support necessary to enable every individual to fulfil his or her potential. We believe that everyone can be successful and our ethos of traditional values aims to teach our pupils the value of hard work and discipline within a happy and caring environment. The School has built a formidable academic reputation and is now an established centre of excellence at all levels including admission to top universities. In summer 2015, 65% of GCSE results were A*/A with approximately one third being at the top A* grade. The School is always rated as one of the top schools in Staffordshire in the Government league tables published annually. Academic excellence is not our sole aim: our students excel in sport, music, drama and all other extra-curricular activities. A wide variety of sports is taught at Stafford Grammar School. Our teams have an enviable record of competitive success, winning local, county, regional and national competitions and individuals regularly secure places in county teams. Sporting excellence at Stafford Grammar School is also demonstrated by individuals achieving success in several sports at national level such as in swimming, athletics and football. Our students excel at the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, each year achieving more Silver and Gold Awards than all the other schools in the area. Music performance is exceptional with opportunities to contribute to the concert band, big band, choirs, instrumental groups and orchestra. Music concerts are held regularly at school and at various local venues including recent performances at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. This year our concert band successfully completed in two national competitions and will be touring in Prague this summer following very successful tours in Spain, France and Italy. 30

Drama also continues to flourish with the recent sell out performance of Into the Woods adding further strength to the school’s reputation for performing arts following previous productions of Beauty and the Beast, West Side Story and Les Misérables. The Preparatory School educates children between the ages of 4 and 11 in the grounds of Stafford Grammar School. Lessons are taught principally by specialist primary teachers, with Stafford Grammar School staff teaching subjects such as science, design technology and P.E. to the key stage 2 pupils. Activity beyond the classroom is plentiful – competitive sport, a wide variety of music and outdoor education, all complemented by clubs and educational visits which enrich the curriculum. During Stafford Preparatory School’s first eight years, the children have achieved some spectacular successes on the sporting front regularly winning trophies locally and nationally. Our aim is to give our pupils an exciting and challenging education which fosters an enthusiasm for learning and prepares them for further education and employment in the best possible way.
Parents and pupils are encouraged to visit Stafford Grammar School or Stafford Preparatory School by prior appointment on any school day.

Intrepid Midlands firefighters blaze a fundraising trail with canoe challenge success THE TEAM COMPLETED THE GRUELLING CHALLENGE IN AN IMPRESSIVE 54 HOURS A team of Midlands firefighters has splashed through a £5,000 fundraising target after canoeing the country’s longest canal in aid of a children’s charity. Mike Wilson, 37 from Trentham, a manager for Avery Care Homes, was joined by Matt Bettany, 37, Jac Vincent, 29 and Jack Reinhold, 24, firefighters from Stone, in an attempt to canoe the 140 mile length of the Grand Union Canal in support of The Peter Pan Centre from Children with Special Needs in Newcastle. Though a few unexpected incidents along the way meant they narrowly missed their 48 hour target, the team still managed to complete the gruelling challenge in an impressive 54 hours – which included negotiating 166 locks. The money continues to come in, and has already passed their £5,000 target, collecting more than £5,200 so far, with hopes that the funds will top a fantastic £6,000. The Peter Pan Centre helps Mike’s son, Finley, who is autistic. He attends the centre every week, where he is given specialist support alongside other pre-school children with a wide range of disabilities, conditions and syndromes. The centre also offers support to their families, helping people from across Staffordshire, Cheshire, Shropshire and the West Midlands. The team were the first to attempt the canoeing feat, which began in Birmingham and ended in London, despite none of them having stepped in a boat prior to beginning training earlier this year. “We didn’t really know what to expect but we knew it would be tough,” said Matt Bettany, on returning home from the successful challenge.
on a whole other level. It was absolutely relentless. “Because it was completely non-stop, fatigue and sleep deprivation hit us the most. Hysteria, hallucinations and falling asleep whilst paddling were all part of the deal and whilst we had loads of funny moments, there were some scary ones too. “I fell in the water twice in the dark so we all had to have our wits about us to make sure we kept our focus.” The team faced a number of challenges en- route, including getting lost in a farmer’s field whilst having to carry their canoes through fields to avoid tunnels where only boats with engines were allowed. Matt continued: “We had to canoe like crazy to try and stay on target time-wise and our friends and family, who followed us in vehicles, had to feed us whilst we were still paddling as there was no time to stop.” Word had spread about the team’s exploits due to local TV and newspaper coverage, and supporters lined the route to offer support and encouragement, which gave the team a real lift. Fundraising manager at the Peter Pan Centre, Christina Hunter, said: “This was such a brave thing to do and we are all incredibly proud of Mike and his team’s achievement. “It never ceases to amaze us how people are willing to put themselves out to help us. These guys have our utmost respect, and our heartfelt gratitude, for putting themselves through such a demanding challenge for us.” The centre must raise £265,000 a year to provide the level of services and support it does, and relies on public donations for funding.
“I’ve done a few endurance tasks before such as cycling from Stoke to Barcelona in 2013 and completing a hand cycling event from Calais to Pamplona in 2014, which is one of the reasons Mike enlisted my help, but this challenge was

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER 2015
METHOD
Read through once and measure everything out before starting.
PASTRY
Start by making the pastry. Sift the flour, icing sugar and cacao into a bowl or the bowl of your food processor. Add the butter and pulse or work with your fingers until it resembles sand. Now add in the 2 egg yolks and if needed add the water then pulse until a dough ball forms. Turn the dough out onto a floured work surface and bring together, wrap with cling film and leave for at least an hour or up to a day in the fridge. Once ready roll out to the thickness of about 1cm, roll up the pastry over the rolling pin and carefully lay over the tart tin. You may find that you will have to work the dough as though it were play-doh moulding it into the corners and over the edges as it may break up due to the sugar but pushing it back together will work. Make sure the pastry hangs over the edges to allow for shrinkage. The trick is to cut off excess pastry once the case has dried out in the oven. Cut out parchment paper and push into the corners and fill with baking beans or rice and bake at 170oC / mk 3 for 30 minutes then remove the parchment and beans or rice to allow the base to dry out in the oven and become crisp – about a further 20 minutes.
FILLING
Once your tart case is ready allow to cool and get on with the filling. Melt the cream and chocolate together over a pan of simmering water – make sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water in the pan. Stir rapidly once melted to create a smooth shiny ganache, stir in the orange extract and zest and pour into the tart case smoothing the top off with a palette knife. Set in the fridge for about 2/3 hours.
MERINGUE
While your tart is setting whisk 2 egg whites on high until stiff peaks ( 66g) then microwave 130g of caster sugar on high for 3 minutes or until warm. Continue to beat the egg whites pouring in the warm sugar until a thick glossy meringue has formed – about 5 minutes. Spoon this out onto a parchment lined tray using the 2 spoons to make oval shapes/ quenelles and dry out in the grill part of your oven with the top and bottom heat turned on to 100oC – fan ovens ruin meringues in my experience. Now the tart is set and your meringues have dried out just enough to pick up get a blow torch and burn the tops as though for lemon meringue pie. Crush them over your tart, grate the chocolate and zest the orange. Sprinkle with cocoa powder, powdered fennel and icing sugar.
TO SERVE
Now whisk 200g of double cream with the sugar and vanilla extract and put in bowl ready to serve.

The Swan Stafford The Swan Stafford is situated in the heart of Stafford town centre. This 18th Century, former coaching inn is a modern, town centre hotel with a historical twist which offers 31 en-suite bedrooms, award winning restaurant, bar and a coffee shop. My partner and I were rather excited to be going to The Swan as we had not been for a long time and had also heard that since our last visit there had been a refurbishment of the ground floor. Arriving early we parked on the car park at the rear of the hotel which is free of charge to residents and diners. We entered through the rear doors and immediately liked the changes that had been made. Soft lighting, wooden floors and a contemporary feel, yet still keeping traditional features greeted us.
As we walked in to the brasserie the first thing that caught our eye was the swan themed lighting. We both commented on how tastefully the transformation of The Swan had been done. We were shown to our table by Elliot the Restaurant Manager who was very helpful and attentive throughout our evening along with Katie our waitress. The brasserie was already bustling with other diners, not to mention
the calm and relaxed atmosphere. We were given the menu and wine list and Elliot also informed us that it was “fish night” which we were also given a menu for (£28.95 for two people and including a house bottle of wine). After ordering a bottle of Pinot Grigio, San Antonio – Italy 2014 (£16.50) to share we began to look through the beautiful dishes that were on offer to us.
We both stated that we were so glad that we only had a light lunch as we were definitely having three courses this evening! For starters I chose the panko breaded crab cakes served with chilli and coriander mayo and apple slaw (£5.95) and my partner having the pork, beer and mustard Scotch egg served with pork scratchings and apple sauce (£5.25). For our main course I decided on the Tuscan braised pork belly, sweet potato puree, black pudding, fennel and apple jus (£12.95) and my partner opting for the pan seared sea bass, patatas bravas, buttered greens and chorizo oil (£14.50).
It was now time to look through the dessert menu and all of the desserts sounded divine. We eventually agreed on the homemade bread and butter pudding with vanilla custard (£5.50) and the homemade chocolate fudge ice cream sundae topped with chantilly cream (£5.95). Both desserts were absolutely scrumptious! Once again we had a brilliant evening dining at The Swan and we both agreed that we would not leave it so long next time and will be returning very soon.
Our starters arrived and looked and tasted delicious! Shortly after, our mains were presented to us and judging by the smiles on our faces we couldn’t wait to begin. My pork belly and my partner’s sea bass were cooked beautifully and both dishes had so much texture and flavour, which we thoroughly enjoyed.

COMPETITION TO FIND THE REGION’S MOST INSPIRATIONAL WOMAN charities and groups for young people in the Walsall and Aldridge area. The winner of the competition to find the Midland Chase Inspirational Woman 2015 was announced at the Region AGM held at the Chase Golf Club. 11 Clubs in the Region had each nominated a woman who they felt fulfilled that title and the panel of 5 judges reached their decision following presentations held in June. Fiona Ford, winner, Inspirational Woman 2015; SIMC President Carol Bailey; Sandra Mellor, SI Newcastle
Region President of SI Midland Chase Carol Bailey initiated a competition to find the Region’s most Inspirational Woman. Clubs in the Region were asked to nominate a woman who they felt fulfilled that title and at the quarterly meeting in June, 11 clubs gave their presentations to the Region meeting and to a panel of 5 judges. The presentations showed what a wealth of wonderful, inspirational women we have working in the area of Midland Chase. A number of Nominations were for women working within the area of sexual and domestic violence: Lisa Freeman of SARAC (sexual abuse and rape advice centre); Dickie James, CEO of Staffordshire Women’s Aid; Kathy Coe who began and runs the Pathway Project and Carole Richardson, programme coordinator of a Salvation Army refuge for women. Detective Michelle Lane was nominated for her work for Hope for Justice and the work she does in the area of illegal trafficking, slavery and prostitution whilst Amanda Bevan was nominated for her support of homeless women and families in the Wolverhampton and West Midlands area. Also linked to homelessness is the work in Walsall and now in Rwanda undertaken by Yvonne Gough who works under the banner Churches Together. Other nominees were Jenna Wills for her work with Oxfam, fund raising and providing water in places in the world where it is most needed; Fiona Ford whose own experience with hair loss following chemotherapy inspired her to set up a bespoke service for wig fitting in the Stoke area; Dawn Candy whose inspiration has enabled Home Start to flourish and develop in Tamworth and Karen Ross who works with the charity Rosie’s Helping Hands to raise enormous amounts of money which is distributed to 48 50
She is Fiona Ford, nominated by SI Newcastle. Fiona’s own experience with hair loss following chemotherapy inspired her to set up a bespoke service for wig fitting in the Stoke area: she now has a salon called ‘Fresh Hair’ housed in the Royal Hospital, Stoke-on-Trent. Member of SI Newcastle Sandra Mellor introduced Fiona again to Region members, explaining how she had first met her when looking for possible speakers for club meetings. She and all club members realised that Fiona was very special; they were so impressed by her positive attitude and utter determination that they began their support of her immediately - and that has continued throughout the setting up of her salon and all of the additions she has made to it since. Midland Chase Region President Carol Bailey presented Fiona with a Royal Brierley Crystal inscribed bowl and vouchers worth £150 which she said she hoped would be spent ‘entirely frivolously!’
humbled and honoured she felt to have been nominated, especially when she met the other nominees - and said that she now felt overwhelmed and couldn’t quite believe that she had been chosen for the title. Fiona said that she could never have realised on the day she was diagnosed with breast cancer that something as special as this could happen. She told everyone that she feels very strongly that women should have a facility to make them feel beautiful and looked after at such a difficult time in their lives when they are dealing with cancer, chemo and hair loss. She puts her success with the salon and the bespoke wig service she provides down to having lots of help from friends and family - and to never taking NO for an answer! Fiona went on to commend Soroptimists for all the work they do to educate, empower and enable women and girls throughout the world; knowing more about the organisation she has learned how powerful it is and now hopes to become a Soroptimist herself. Certainly Soroptimist International will be proud and pleased to welcome such an Inspirational Woman into their membership.
In accepting the title, Fiona told Soroptimists of the Region how

Award winning Priors dentist celebrates 30 years WORLDWIDE REPUTATION FOR IMPLANTS AND CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY Patients, staff, suppliers and friends of The Priors Dental Practice in Penkridge held an anniversary tea party to celebrate principal dentist Mark Emms’ 30th year as a dental surgeon. Invited guests were served traditional afternoon tea at the event which was held at the Pinfold Lane Practice in Penkridge where Mark has been practicing for over 29 years. Principal Dentist Mark Emms explains: “We wanted to host an event to celebrate how far the practice has come over the past 30 years – from a single dentist practitioner to a team of 20 including an associate dentist, two specialist orthodontists, an endodontist and a hygienist team. The event was a great way to share this success with those who have helped us to make it happen – including patients, suppliers, referring dentists and of course, friends and family of the practice.” He adds: “We have grown primarily through word of mouth and recommendation, winning national and
regional dentistry awards year on year whilst investing heavily in our facilities and our people. We have held Silver Investors in People Status for the last six years.” Mark Emms joined the practice in 1989, having started his career as a dentist four years previously. He holds a Masters in conservative dentistry and has a special interest in implants where he has developed a worldwide reputation for his expertise.

Wolverhampton Hospice Increases Support available to Patients in their own Homes COMPTON HOSPICE HAVE BEEN PROVIDING PALLIATIVE CARE FOR 33 YEARS
Wolverhampton’s Compton Hospice will expand the support it offers to patients living with incurable illnesses in their own homes. The charity, which has been providing palliative care for 33 years, has recruited seven new Specialist Community Nurses and extended its hours of operation. A total of 20 nurses will now provide support between the hours of 8am and 9.30pm, 7 days a week, due an increased demand for care in the home. Annie Millington, Compton Hospice Community Nursing Team Leader, commented: “At Compton Hospice we recognise that people aren’t just sick between the hours of 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and so we have expanded the support we offer in order to reach more people with incurable illnesses across Wolverhampton and the Black Country. Compton Hospice is the only adult hospice in the Midlands to offer these extended hours of care.” Mrs Millington added: “Referrals to our home care service are increasing. More and more people are expressing their desire to receive care in the comfort of their own homes, in familiar surroundings and amongst their favourite belongings. We are also seeing an increase of people with more complex illnesses being referred for support.” Compton Hospice Community Nurses provide specialist care which focuses on controlling pain and symptoms, as well as offering advice and support to enable patients to remain comfortable and functional in their own homes. Marie Murphy has been a Community Nurse at Compton Hospice for 11 years and supports patients and their families at what can be an emotional and difficult time. She comments that for many patients the initial thought of being cared for by the hospice can be scary.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER 2015
“When people think of the hospice they think ‘am I really that poorly?’. But once I have spoken to them in the comfort of their own home, they realise I’m there to help them and it’s like a huge weight has been lifted off their shoulders.” The Community Nurses are the first point of contact when a new patient is referred to the hospice. The Nurses regularly visit patients’ to discuss and monitor any issues around symptom management, pain control, health, medication and emotional support. One of Marie’s patient’s, 75 year old David Jones who was diagnosed with cancer in September 2013, commented that he initially felt frightened about the prospect of receiving hospice care. “When my doctor told me about the hospice I was frightened. To me, Compton was the end. I may be 75 but I have a lot of living to do. However, I’ve had nothing but help and I cannot praise the hospice enough. I’m not in pain and Marie has made me feel comfortable. She checks I’m taking the right medication and I put my trust in her. I’ve noticed my strength coming back, I managed to get down the stairs for the first time in weeks. My ambition now is to get in my car and start driving again.” The retired Police Officer from Tettenhall added: “I’m doing everything I possibly can with the help of Compton Hospice and I feel like I’m back to normal now. Compton is there to help you and I’ve got complete trust in them. ”

Sue Starr Hypnotherapy COMMITMENT FACILITATES LONG LASTING CHANGE RATHER THAN A TEMPORARY FIX “Throughout the last year, my client base has continued to increase. Clinical Hypnotherapy continues to develop credibility as a leading alternative therapy and features in many media stories mostly for the right reasons! Our point of difference is that we include more behavioural tools, such as CBT and NLP, alongside Hypnotherapy to support clients in achieving their personal goals”. Sue Starr Hypnotherapy has over the last 3 years established itself as a leading practice in South Staffordshire. Sue continues “Teenagers and young children (as young as 6) are an increasing part of my client base; they tend to be great fun to work with and engage really well with therapy. The diversity of issues faced can range from low confidence, anxieties, exam pressures and bullying. GP and school referrals for this continue to highlight a broader shortage in support for young people where quick response is essential” As well as the regular client base, last summer saw an increase in people wanting Hypnotherapy prior to weddings. Best Man speeches, Bride confidence and self-esteem concerns have so far been supported by Sue, “Weddings are supposed to be the best day of a couples lives, however, this pressure of being in the spotlight, organising so much and wanting it to be perfect can be overwhelming. We help with the mindset so that the big day can be fully enjoyed by confident, in control Brides,
Grooms and the Best Man!” The most important thing is that a client really wants a beneficial change for themselves and that they are committed to making a change. Expecting a magic wand result with no hard work or challenges is not the case with Hypnotherapy. “Many people nowadays want quick fixes with no effort; Hypnotherapy requires dedication from the client to bring about change. But combining Hypnotherapy and client commitment facilitates long lasting change rather than a temporary fix!” Sue Starr Dip Hyp, DNLP, GQHP, GHRreg is a fully qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist and is registered with the General Hypnotherapy Register, General Hypnotherapy Standards Council, and the NHS recognised Complimentary & Natural Healthcare Council. ‘Winter Draws on’ REINFORCE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM
The Autumnal Equinox (equal night) when day and night are about equal length took place on September 23rd. This phenomenon has always been celebrated by Religions and Pagans across the globe, in Roman times celebrations were dedicated to Pomona the goddess of fruit and growing things. We then head towards the Winter Solstice (Sun and Still) on the shortest day of the year December 21st. This has also been a time for great celebration historically; many cultures see it as a time of rebirth. During this transition days get shorter and weather gets colder; both of which, added to modern living, less than healthy eating and alcohol consumption, can leave us feeling lethargic, lacking motivation and unfit. The Nature’s Sunshine page on our website is a great starting point to redress the balance – take the free online Lifestyle Analysis and learn which of your bodies systems would benefit from additional support. The ‘Healthy Starter’ options will complement the CACI facial and body toning treatments. Capitalise on this opportunity to reinforce your immune system and help it to deal with the challenges of modern living.
The Heaven range of products will also help protect your skin against the ravages of the winter climate for which this country is so well known. The feedback from clients on the results achieved with our CACI Ultimate machine has been so overwhelmingly positive that we have explored other possibilities within the CACI range to add to the services we can provide. The outcome of our research has led us to add a CACI Quantum machine to our stable of superb equipment. The CACI Quantum machine provides a comprehensive package of facial and body toning treatments. Incredible results are achieved by the use of Faradic technology which uses a higher intensity output than microcurrent stimulation, and so is ideal for firming and toning the larger body 54

muscles. The current is delivered in a series of short pulses through conductive pads that are positioned over specific muscle groups. As the current passes through the pads it stimulates involuntary muscle contractions thereby passively exercising and toning the muscles, for example a typical 20 minute stomach treatment is the equivalent of doing 300 perfect sit ups. The CACI Quantum also offers Lymphatic Drainage treatments, this is a therapeutic massage treatment using light pressure with long, gentle, rhythmic strokes to increase lymphatic flow and remove toxins from your body. Lymph is an essential fluid that flows around your body, carrying white blood cells and antibodies, which are an integral part of your immune system helping you fight infection, to your tissues and organs. Every day, we consume toxins in a multitude of differing ways; eating badly, living in polluted environments, drinking too much alcohol, having a high sugar intake – the list is endless. Adding these to an unhealthy lifestyle may results in the Lymphatic system being unable to cope with its task of flushing all the toxins away to keep you healthy. The use of Lymphatic drainage massage will assist in the flow of lymph around your body,
taking some of the strain from your immune system and helping to effectively eradicate toxins. The time is now right to stand back and take a look at our lifestyle with a view to greeting the Vernal Equinox next spring and moving towards the Summer Solstice with a healthy body and face. For many centuries man has looked forward to spring as a time of great joy. We at The Chase CACI Clinic are here to help you in your desire to look feel the best you can in 2016.

World War 1 tribute website is launched
REMEMBERING THE SACRIFICES MADE BY MEN AND WOMEN DURING WORLD WAR 1 ACROSS THE DISTRICT. Cannock Chase Council in partnership with WLCT has launched an official World War 1 website to remember the sacrifices made by men and women during World War 1 across the District.
Last year marked the centenary of the start of the First World War and there have been a number of events and commemorations in the District to remember those who fought. This year has seen two events: ‘Four Winters at War’ and ‘Stepping into Wartime’ which have formed part of the four year centenary programme.
The special website not only gives visitors information on local campaigns and events commemorating World War 1, but is also a way for family, friends and survivors to share their own memories of wartime.
Both events have been extremely successful with hundreds of local people attending and gaining an experience of wartime within Cannock Chase District.
The website contains stories of soldiers from local historian Paul Bedford, who spent six years researching the history of the 564 men from Cannock and Hednesford who never returned home after going off to fight and he recently launched the book ‘Not Just Names’.
The website is available at www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk/worldwar1 Council Leader George Adamson said “It has been a poignant couple of years. This extraordinary website has a wealth of local information about local men from the area that lost their lives during the First World War and also highlights our local wartime history. It’s important that we remember.” Pete Burt, Managing Director of WLCT, said: “WLCT is very proud to partner Cannock Chase Council in all its World War One centenary activities. This website will leave a brilliant legacy of how the community of Cannock Chase came together to commemorate the centenary. Art has been a fantastic tool in engaging our local community in our local wartime history.”

of Attorney’? r e w o P Why do I need a ‘Lasting Power of Attorney’? g in st a ‘L a d e e do I n
hy W THE ANSWER IS VERY SIMPLE, HAVE YOUR LPA’S PREPARED NOW After a Will, one of the most important documents that all adults should have in place is a Lasting Power of Attorney. These documents, ‘LPAs’, enable you to personally choose who will be authorised to make your decisions should you loose mental capacity. Do not think loss of mental capacity is only a problem for the very elderly perhaps with dementia. It is not an age related problem. Anyone can loose capacity at any age. Sadly all it takes is something as simple as a fall or a car crash, or a stroke. And this can happen to anyone at any age. If you do not have the documents in place and the problem does
occur, then someone, generally, but not always a family member must make application to the Court of Protection for them to be authorised by that court to make your decisions. This process is very long and complex and expensive. It can take up to 9 months and several thousands of pounds in fees. This is a very painful process for a family member to have to undertake on your behalf. And, you may end up with someone you would not have chosen yourself having the legal authority to make your decisions for you. Even worst is the case where the court may have to choose a professional person as attorney, who will then be charging your estate significant fees,
possibly for years, for making your decisions for you. The answer is very simple, have your LPAs prepared now, while you can clearly make your own decisions about who should be the named attorneys. For further information, advice and guidance call Mike Humpherson who is the local Senior Consultant representing Goodwills Legal Services Ltd. A home visit service is provided to take your instructions for your Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney. Sweetly Swedish
BY ROB TAYLOR
PREPARE TO MEET THE NEWEST - AND BEST - MEMBER OF THE SUV FAMILY.
History has not been kind to the big old Volvos of the late eighties and early nineties: those designed with a ruler and set square, driven almost exclusively by Geography teachers and beloved by Fido for boot-space alone. Stronger than Hercules and packing more metal than Metallica, they were at all times - not just during a thunderstorm - the safest place to be on the road, but never the coolest. Yet today’s Volvo is a different matter. Today anyone behind a wheel emblazoned with the Chinese-owned Swedish marque’s logo can consider themselves cooler than a snow-topped Scandinavian pine tree. Buying a Volvo is a demonstrably intelligent and leftfield thing to do and implicitly shows taste and discerning, as opposed to pack-following. Though not quite a Swedish sexbomb, the brand new Volvo XC90 D5 Inscription AWD Geartronic is a handsome machine that perfectly captures the zeitgeist. But with a Scandinavian twist. And the best thing is, sensible-shoes car buyers still have all of the very 62
latest crash and safety technology to protect them, because Volvo still leads the field in this arena. The company boasts that no one will be killed in a new Volvo from 2020 onwards, and somehow that seemingly impossible statement seems faintly possible. There are so many cutting-edge safety features on this flagship SUV that I daren’t even attempt to list them all here: just suffice it to say that many of them are revolutionary and stem from extensive investigation into real-world crashes, as opposed to the more common laboratory testing. This D5 model is pricey, starting at £45,550, but it feels worth it, especially inside, where in search of a premium aesthetic, Volvo has forged its own way, rather than copying Audi et al. And, boy, has it succeeded. The new ‘Human Machine Interface’ central command system is incredibly intuitive and easy to use; the cabin is beautifully made with top-notch materials. It’s simply a symphony of ergonomic genius at work inside: everything is precisely where it ought to be. Like the very best kind of butler, the XC90 keeps a very well organised and logically laid-out “driving space”. Every switch is exquisitely tactile and within easy reach; everything is well lit and intelligently set up. And there
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER 2015
really is seating for seven adults and luggage in the boot, to boot. All wheel drive sees the XC90 command the road with unerring levels of grip. Stable in all weather and with a supple and absorbent air-suspension set-up despite the 20” alloys, it is more than able to keep every pothole and road gremlin out of the cabin. This leviathan can hit 60 mph from zero in 7.8 seconds and reach 137 mph, courtesy of a modest 2 litre 225 bhp four cylinder diesel engine. You may not buy this car with your heart but for your head, it’s a nobrainer - that is, if you are loathe to mix it with the enfeebled dullards who covet anything German just because Mr and Mrs Next-Door own one. Admittedly this particular D5 model will not be for everyone, as it’s not a sporty vehicle - there is a sportier 320 bhp T6 petrol version, among others - but that won’t return 48.7 mpg and emit just 152 g/km of co2. And besides, anyone who wants to hustle this car along is entirely missing the point. The XC90 is designed to soothe and protect; to be functional and not flashy.
Prepare to meet the newest and best - member of the SUV
Golf Driver
BY ROB TAYLOR
TODAY’S GOLF IS AN EVERYDAY CAR FOR EVERY OCCASION
Whenever anyone engages me in conversation long enough for the subject of my motoring journalism to come up, I’m routinely plagued with the question: what car should I buy?? To which I reply, with sagged shoulders and a sad and weary countenance, always and profoundly: “a Volkswagen Golf.” Admittedly there may be the odd occasion when I must recommend another entirely different vehicle if said person is in need of carting around a brood of six children on a regular basis, or if they expressly want a car that can plunder off-road tracks and negotiate difficult terrain; but rarely does this happen, because the Golf range has such depth and breadth that it’s hard to find a reason why anyone shouldn’t buy one. Or why I shouldn’t recommend one. Except, of course, if I loathe the person and wish to be mischievous, in which case I point them towards a [You can’t print that - Ed]. A Golf can be compellingly fast in ‘R’ form; practically perfect in its ‘GTI’ iteration; frugal and forceful as a ‘GTD’; topless in cabrio guise; practical as a ‘SV’ or estate; economical, with BlueMotion engines; and eco-friendly in the case of the ‘GTE’, without ever compromising the core, iconic values that make this car something special. Despite myriad variations, this version of the seventh generation model – the Golf GT 2.0-litre TDI 150 PS 5dr DSG –
does arguably represent a sweet spot in the range and epitomises exactly why to date over 29 million have been sold. In a day and age when celebrity looks matter more than ever, this Golf is beautifully on-trend, effortlessly walking a fine line between sophistication and swagger. Its styling speaks of upmarket pretensions, with its stubby nose emphasising a long bonnet, chiselled Euro cheekbones and rakish lines. And with a price tag of £26,190, you won’t need to belong to the landed gentry to own one. Despite being larger than its predecessor, this Golf is now 100 kg lighter and yet safer than ever before, courtesy of many acronymic safety nets. By moving the front wheels forward fractionally, Volkswagen has eked out extra interior space too, which can be felt most noticeably in rear legroom. Boot capacity has increased also to 380 litres. Inside there’s the usual high-quality Volkswagen cabin-craft, with soft-touch switchgear; ergonomic excellence and delicate plastics. Everything is run from a large central touch-screen, which is quick and easy to use intuitively, and functions exactly as your smartphone does, giving access to lots of toys including DAB digital radio and Bluetooth. This engine features ‘Start/Stop’ and starts unceremoniously enough, but quickly piques your interest when up and running, as it can be both docile and dumbfounding if the situation presents. Now with the option of
multiple driving modes - Eco, Sport, Normal and, with ‘Adaptive Chassis Control’ optioned, another choice: Comfort – the GT performs well in every setting and is never wearing, no matter how long you happen to be behind the wheel, chiefly thanks to the delightful DSG gearbox. Always a capable performer whenever it’s possible to string a few corners together, the GT is quick - 0-60 mph in 8.6 seconds; top speed, 131 mph but economical too: 62.8 mpg on the combined cycle and responsible for just 119 g/km of Co2. It rides incredibly well also, cocooning driver and passenger alike from the harsh realities of today’s tarmac. Road and wind noise intrude only minimally into the cabin. The Golf is easy to point and park, especially thanks to the parking sensors and optional reversing camera, and it’s more than happy to tootle slowly through city streets or to cruise on faster stretches. In short, it does it all, and always does it better than all others. The Volkswagen Golf has been a beloved staple in the UK since the early seventies, during which time it has been honed and refined to within an inch of perfection. Today’s Golf is an every car for every occasion. Devoid of image problems, classless and timeless it is maturing like the very best wines, seeing off all of the very many upstart pretenders to its throne.
It’s simply the best.
