Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted

up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when

we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Cannock and Stafford areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the

personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The KSLI Memorial A The last remaining Soldiers who served with one of the country’s finest Regiment, The Kings Shropshire Light Infantry (KSLI), want to erect a lasting memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas Staffordshire, to those who served in the Regiment in the defence of its country and for some who made the supreme sacrifice in war and on peace keeping duties. The Regiments 300 year history goes back to the 18th century with many Battle Honours won in major British campaigns of history to the present day. One of the Regiments claim to fame, was when it guarded Napoleon Bonaparte when he was exiled to the Atlantic Island of St. Helena after being defeated at the battle of Waterloo.

The KSLI was one of a number of famous Light Infantry Regiments that were formed when the father of the Light Infantry Sir John Moore introduced radical changes to the military system using Light Infantry tactics and training. Although the Regiment was raised in Bridgnorth and was later to incorporate its county affiliation to Shropshire in its Regimental title, it recruited as well in adjoining counties especially during the First and Second World Wars and many Recruits came from the Staffordshire and Midlands area. Over the years the Regiment has seen many changes to its titles and roles and now has its history embedded with the present day Regiment of The Rifles. Now the largest Infantry Regiment in the British Army and has played a major role in the Afghanistan campaign.

to raise approximately £125,000 for the design building and maintenance of the memorial. So far the appeal has held a number of successful fund raising events including street and supermarket collections and through this article hopes to inform the general public and those associated with the Regiment of this important appeal. All members (including relatives) of Light Infantry and Rifles Regiments past and present will be made most welcome. re People o M t e G o T n ig a p m a C nches Walking To Work Lau Part of the INTO team’s mission to encourage more people to walk involved a walkability audit to highlight any difficulties faced by walkers. Over twenty employees from Stafford Borough Council, The Lewis Partnership and Asda took part in the survey and provided feedback, which will be used to improve walking facilities. One office worker putting her best foot forward is Leigh Morton from Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Sports Partnership. Leigh is a regular walker to and from work who also took part in the walkability survey. Leigh said: “Walking to and from work is great. It gives me time to think about the forthcoming day or to wind down by doing a bit of exercise in the fresh air, after my desk bound day job. I would recommend it to all.”

The walkers who took part in the walkability audit were entered into a prize draw to win an iPod. Declan Riddell, from Stafford Chamber of commerce presenting an IPod to lucky winner Leigh Morton.

People from Stafford are being urged to put their best foot forward and walk to work as part of a new campaign by Staffordshire County Council.

The INTO project (Inspiring New Travel Options) is a £4 million initiative funded by the Government to promote and encourage more sustainable travel across Stafford, and open access to jobs, education and services. You can find out more at www.staffordshire.gov.uk.

Pupils Can’t Stop Putting

Others First

The latest push by the Inspiring New Travel Options (INTO) team is trying to encourage more people from Stafford to walk to and from work and for leisure. To help people do this, the team has signed up to the brand new Walk It App and website at www. WalkIt.com, which will give walkers suggested routes, descriptions and distances of each journey. Walkers can get a route map between any two points in Staffordshire, including journey time, step count, carbon saving and even the number of calories burned on their walk. Cllr Mark Winnington, Cabinet Member for Economy and Infrastructure with Staffordshire County Council said: “One of our key priorities as a Council is to help people lead a healthy lifestyle and this latest push from the INTO team is allowing us to do this. “INTO is an exciting project, promoting sustainable travel in Stafford, overseeing the introduction of new cycle paths, raising the profile of walking and cycling, and working to make public transport more attractive to commuters. “Walking can often be a great alternative to jumping in the car. With no journey delays, no timetables to keep to, little overcrowding, as well as being good for your health, it’s the smart choice. Plus you’ll get plenty of fresh air and time to clear your mind before and after work”. 24

n Furniture & o ti a d n u o F rt a e H sh ti Stafford Bri onations D g in k e e S y tl n e rg U Electrical Store Stafford British Heart Foundation (BHF) Furniture & Electrical store is urgently appealing to local residents to have a clear out and donate any unwanted household goods such as sofas, beds, dining tables, wardrobes and TVs. 100% of the profits raised from donations will go into the fight against heart disease and fund the BHF’s life-saving research. Coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer and last year BHF shops raised over £31 million in the fight for every heartbeat. Donations, which are vital to the charity, are desperately needed so that BHF researchers can continue their relentless search for breakthroughs to beat heart disease. Every year, 3 million items of furniture go into landfill that could easily be re-used. By donating to the BHF you can recycle goods that might otherwise be wasted. In 2013, the BHF gave a second life to over 350,000 furniture and electrical items (from washing machines to wardrobes), preventing 26,000 tonnes of landfill. BHF Area Manager, Julie Currie, says, “We absolutely rely on the support of

the local community in Stafford to keep us running and without their generous donations we risk reducing funding for vital research into heart disease. “If each household were willing to spend just half an hour having a clear out and donating to their local BHF Furniture & Electrical store, they would be helping to save lives. It really is as simple as that! Please join the fight for every heartbeat and donate your unwanted household items to your local BHF store today.” Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the UK’s single biggest killer; around 161 people in Stafford die from CHD each year1. To date, BHF stores have helped to fund 17 defibrillators and an Echo machine worth over £100,000 in the local area, as well as funding five healthcare professionals, including a

cardiac liaison nurse, heart failure nurse and cardiac rehab nurses. The BHF is calling on people across the UK to fight back against this killer. By supporting the Stafford Furniture & Electrical store, BHF can continue to search for a breakthrough to put an end to the suffering caused by heart disease. But medical research costs money and the BHF urgently needs support to rid the UK of heart disease and the misery it brings. For over 50 years, BHF has pioneered research that’s transformed the lives of people living with heart and circulatory conditions. The BHF’s work has been central to the discoveries of vital treatments that are changing the fight against heart disease. However, there are still so many people who need help, from babies born with life-threatening heart problems to the many mums, dads and grandparents who survive a heart attack and endure the daily battles of heart failure. Every pound raise, minute of volunteers’ time and donation to BHF shops will help make a difference to people’s lives. The Stafford BHF Furniture & Electrical store is located at 12 Princes Street, Stafford, ST16 2BN.

Recipe Of The Month Beef, Chorizo and Black Olive Chilli Preparation time: 20 minutes + 24 hours

Fridge time: 24 hours

Serves 4

Cooking time: 2.5 - 3 hours

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

• 1 kilo of diced beef • 100g plain flour • 100g unsalted butter • Dash of olive oil • 200g of chorizo ring (diced) • 40g of sliced black olives • 100g of sliced jalapeno • 2 small red chillies finely sliced • 1 large onion • 6 cloves of garlic • 1/4 tsp of grated ginger • 1 can of kidney beans 400g • 1 can of chopped tomatoes 400g • 1/2 tsp of cinnamon • 40g dark chocolate • 1tbsp of coriander stalks finely chopped • tsp of rosemary and thyme • 350ml of red wine • 50 ml of rapeseed oil • Sea Salt • Cracked Black Pepper • 300ml water

1. In a bowl soak the beef and diced chorizo in the red wine, thyme, rosemary and garlic then marinate in the fridge for 24 hours.

EQUIPMENT

I would serve this with roasted baby new potatoes tossed in rosemary, garlic, sea salt flakes and pepper before roasting. A green salad dressed with balsamic and olive oil whisked together (1 part balsamic to 5 parts olive oil). Sour cream and grated mozzarella. Or some really nice locally baked sour dough bread.

• 1 heavy based pan • chopping board • cooks knife • grater 30

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL/MAY 2014

2. The next day take the beef out of the wine and reserve the juices, pat the beef dry with kitchen towel, coat in the flour and fry in butter and olive oil and set aside. 3. Small dice the onion, jalapenos and black olives, sweat off in oil for 20 minutes until softened but not browned too much, add in the ginger, coriander stalks, chillies and cinnamon and cook off for 10 minutes then add in the tomatoes, reserved wine juices, chocolate, water and kidney beans. 4. Add the beef and chorizo to the other ingredients and simmer for 2 hours or until the beef is tender and the sauce is rich. If cooking in a casserole dish in the oven, firstly set the oven to 190°C, allow more than 2 hours cooking time and during cooking occasionally take out and stir. Add water if thickening too much. At La Creperie 2 r o F l a e M e rs u o C e Win A Thre

This month we have teamed up with La Creperie for one lucky reader to win a three course meal for 2 with a bottle of wine. La Creperie is an authentic French restaurant, bringing a delicious touch of je ne sais quoi to the beautiful county town of Stafford. Our menu includes a wide variety of dishes, ranging from savoury galettes to sweet crepes and a number of other French favourites. All are cooked freshly to order, with ingredients sourced as locally as possible, though in some cases, we have crossed the channel to find just what we need to perfect a dish. Join us in our elegant yet comfortable restaurant where you can enjoy a taste of France seven days a week. Our restaurant is design with an open plan kitchen so customers are able to watch crepe chefs cooking live right in front of them. We are also fully-licensed and stock crisp and refreshing Brittany cidre as well as a selection of beers and wines.

We have recently extended our Menu to offer other traditional French dishes on Friday and Saturday evenings from 7pm. The new evening menu features favourites such as Moules Mariniere, Steak, Toulouse Sausage, and Beef Bourginon as well as our best selling Galettes and Crepes. La Creperie began life outdoors, when owner Georgina Finch catered for events and fairs around the beautiful county of Staffordshire from her trailer, cooking for the hungry masses on her trusty gas crepe machine. Georgina explained it was a summer of cold winds and torrential downpours that persuaded her it was time to look for premises and fulfilled her lifelong ambition of opening her own restaurant in December 2012, with the launch of La Creperie in Martin Street, Stafford. Miss Finch said: “The outside catering is still part of the services we offer – and thankfully so, as it helped me fulfil another dream. A few months after opening the restaurant, I was working at a prestigious food fair in the county when one of my culinary idols, Jean Christophe Novelli appeared at my trailer door. The friendly Frenchman not only popped in to say bonjour, but asked if he could rekindle memories

She added: “I am very proud of what my staff and I offer at La Creperie. I want every visit to be relaxing, fun and memorable for all the right reasons – not a cliché, but a staff mantra. Great food and service are our highest priorities.” If you have a special event such as a wedding or birthday party, come and speak to us about hiring our function room, or to discuss our outside catering services. We have a fantastic function room at La Creperie, suitable for all special occasions. We dress it to impress, in accordance with your function, so whether you are celebrating a wedding, or inviting friends to a birthday party, we will make it an occasion to remember and cherish. We also offer an outside catering service, which means you can enjoy our delicious crepes at a venue of your choice, be it an exhibition, event or private party. Please call us today to discuss our very competitive rates and menus, which we can tailor to suit your exact requirements.

The Shoal Hill Tavern Under new management and newly refurbished, The Shoal Hill Tavern is nestled adjacent to Shoal Hill Common, a 180 acre site of woodland and lowland heath, lying within the Cannock Chase area of outstanding natural beauty. This evening my partner and I were looking forward to dining at The Shoal Hill Tavern after being recommended to us by friends, who said this was pub food at its best! From the moment we arrived you could see why this pub is enjoyed by the locals and visitors from afar as there was such a relaxing atmosphere and the staff so friendly and welcoming. As we passed the bar area with plentiful seating and an open fire, we were shown to our table in the restaurant, and once seated were given the menu and also a specials board. We ordered a bottle of Rioja Red wine to share whilst we perused the delicious dishes offered to us this evening. For starters we chose prawn cocktail (£4.85) and the mushroom cobbler (£4.55) and for our main course we opted for the 8oz sirloin steak (£13.95) and the China sizzler (£11.95). Our starters arrived shortly after and we couldn’t wait to tuck in. The prawn cocktail was fresh and flavoursome and my partner stated that the mushroom cobbler

with the secret crunchy topping was different and very tasty!

were beautifully presented and were polished off in minutes!

When our mains were served to us we were very impressed with the presentation and the portion size. The steak was cooked to perfection and the homemade triple cooked chips were amazing. The China sizzler which included steak and prawns in an oyster sauce served on a sizzling skillet with chips, salad and rice was very pleasing.

Our evening at The Shoal Hill Tavern was very pleasant and we enjoyed every minute of it. The waitresses Kirsty and Leah tended to our every need and we cannot wait to return.

Once we had finished our mains and our plates cleared our waitress asked if we would be having dessert to which we both immediately said “yes please”. All of the desserts sounded divine and I would’ve have liked to try them all, however I chose the chocolate fudge cake with ice cream and my partner chose the apple and rhubarb crumble with custard. Again both dishes

1. Give your system a kick start. Drink 8 glasses of water a day. This will help your organs to function better and give you more energy. 2. Exercise! Start off with gentle walking and stretching if hitting the gym is not your cup of tea. Any exercise will help your lymphatic system eliminate toxins from your body which in turn will give you more energy and help improve your skin texture. If you don’t want to move the toxins yourself we can do it for you! Body massage aids the movement of the lymphatic system, improves circulation and the distribution of nutrients, it is also very relaxing. 3. Exfoliate! Exfoliate! Exfoliate! The use of a body brush from feet upwards (avoiding sensitive areas and the face) will help improve skin tone, sloth dead skin cells and improve your general health. This is best carried out prior to bathing so you can use a good exfoliating body wash in the shower/bath to smooth and then finish with a velvety moisturiser to soften the skin. 4. You are what you eat! Try and swap caffeine drinks for herbal teas. Eating Low GI food to help keep your energy up. Lots of lovely oily fish to help your skin. Try introducing plenty of vitamin C into your diet as it aids collagen production... try citrus fruits, apples and even bell peppers...feed your skin from within.

pnoth Sue Starr Clinical Hy What would you say to people that ask you about what Hypnotherapy is? “Hypnosis by positive suggestion helps the client enter a day dream like state” says Sue Starr “this allows access to the subconscious mind whereby old (and negative) thoughts and habits can be replaced with new, more positive thoughts”. These negative thoughts and habits are generally built up over time and can be mildly irritating to severely debilitating. Now with 2 years as an established practitioner of Hypnotherapy, what common issues do people approach you with? “My client age has ranged from 6years old through to 85 years old. Weight management programs have been very popular along with support for confidence, stress and phobias (such as fear of flying and public speaking). Clients have come to me mainly through recommendations from others as well as GP referrals”.

The most important thing is that a client really wants a beneficial change for themselves and that they are committed to making a change. Expecting a magic wand result with no hard work or challenges is not the case with Hypnotherapy. “Many people nowadays want quick fixes with no effort; Hypnotherapy requires dedication from the client to bring about change. But combining Hypnotherapy and client commitment facilitates long lasting change rather than a temporary fix!” Over recent months with the increase of children and teenage clients, Sue has developed specific programs targeted at their core issues. “I have developed my Teenage Emotional Stress Therapy program specifically to support young people in their formative years. The pressures on them can come from such things as exam/coursework stress, anxiety,

self-esteem and confidence. This program uses a broader range of techniques including CBT and NLP which are fantastic at engaging with kids and helping to bring positive actions and attitudes to their lives”. Sue Starr Dip Hyp, DNLP, GQHP, GHRreg is a fully qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist and is registered with the General Hypnotherapy Register, General Hypnotherapy Standards Council, and the NHS recognised Complimentary & Natural Healthcare Council.

Proud to Boast! The Cottage Surgery is proud to announce that they have created a special partnership with one of the UK’s true ’cutting edge providers’ of Injectable Medical Aesthetic Treatments. Surgeon Ash Labib is the UK Ambassador for Allergan, the originator and exclusive supplier of the genuine ‘Botox’ product. Used for medical treatments such as Hyperhidrosis, (excessive sweating), Migraine control, and the reduction of spasms in children Botox is now widely known as a way to reduce the signs of ageing. It is Ash Labib’s day job as the E.N.T. Surgeon at two of the Midlands premier NHS Hospitals, Russell’s Hall and New Cross, that inspired him to develop the use of Dermal Fillers, (another essential tool in the battle against the signs of ageing), for a very different treatment. Along with a very select few, Ash has developed the use of Dermal Fillers to provide Rhinoplasty (Nose jobs to you and me) and nasal Reconstruction. This pioneering new treatment can amazingly be completed in your Lunch Hour! Ash Labib does of course, utilise dermal fillers in the more traditional sense, i.e. filling those lines that occur through the natural ageing process or, to reduce scars left by acne, accidents or childhood diseases such as Chicken Pox.

It is experience gained as a surgeon in the E.N.T. field that has lead him to develop nasal reconstruction without the need of a scalpel. Many people are unhappy with their nose shape, either being ‘born with it’ or, because of an accident, or illness. In any event, how we look, can have an effect on how others perceive us. The usual remedy was to ‘go under the knife’ and undertake invasive surgery. Not only does this traditional surgical intervention require the essential use of a general anaesthetic with the usual risks this entails, but also several weeks away from work or from social commitment’s. It also results in very obvious and substantial bruising with the possibility of scarring, temporary or otherwise, post treatment aftercare, and sometimes the need for additional corrective surgery. All invasive surgery carries with it the Risk of infection as we all now know with the rise of super bugs such as Clostridium Difficile, (known as C-Diff in the press/media) however good the surgical resources are. Ash’s skills in utilising dermal fillers in place of the scalpel usually remove ALL of the above downsides. Very often Ash can provide the desired aesthetic results in under half an hour, & virtually always within the time we take for our lunch break. Genuinely, a good percentage of his patient’s leave his treatment room and go straight back to work. Some patients not only choose to use Ash’s filler based expertise to avoid the

Before and after pictures of one of Ash's patients - without the use of a scalple!

above issues, but also because they feel embarrassed by their desire to remodel this important facial feature, and know the associated bruising will be evidence of surgery, to not only friends, family and work colleagues, and even strangers in the street. Because there are very rarely any tell tail signs and no need to take time away from work, some patients really value this ultimately discreet way of achieving their goal. The Cottage Surgery offers Ash’s services because they are aware that his skills in the use of both wrinkle relaxing injections and Dermal Fillers is second to none in the UK. Ash’s skill was initially brought to the attention of the Surgery through his international training and teaching business, where he is able to spread the word on his development of filler based Rhinoplasty. The surgery is confident that you can benefit from his 21 years of E.N.T. experience, years of Medical Aesthetic injectable treatment development, and innate understanding of his patients requirements. Amazingly, like all their other treatments the Surgery offers, free in depth consultations and have agreed for a limited time, that Ash’s Consultations will also be free! To book a free and no obligation Consultation with Ash Labib, call us on 01384 940498 or visit our website www.cottage-surgery.co.uk

“Ash, I came to see you after I had Rhinoplasty 10 years ago, abroad. I was very unhappy with the results. But when you performed the nonsurgical Rhinoplasty on my nose, it was an amazing result which has changed my nose on the outside to my desired shape, and gave me all the confidence and reassurance from the inside as well! I thank you so much for the revolutionary treatment.” Chris

UltraSlim Clinics Men and Women turn to ‘fat freezing’ to lose love handles and tummy fat. Hundreds of people in the Midlands are freezing their fat off after Christmas, rather than burning it off at the gym, after signing up for a new treatment at UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton that uses extreme cold to blast away love handles, muffin tops and spare tyres. The clinic based in Berry Street, Wolverhampton has seen a substantial increase in bookings after recent media reporting many celebrities, including Luisa Zissman who had the treatment before entering the Big Brother house, having had the treatment with favourable results. The procedure, which can be done during a lunch hour, is proving particularly popular with men and women who do not want surgery or liposuction. Those seeking a tactical strike against the festive bulge are hooked up to a machine that uses vacuum pressure and deep cooling to target fat below the skin, freezing unwanted fat cells in the waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, arms and back. Patients can answer emails and telephone calls, read a book or watch a film while having the LipoFreeze Cryolipolysis treatment. It is used for areas of fat that refuse to budge with exercise and is done without anaesthetic or medication. According to Hanna McCormac at UltraSlim Clinics, it is best for those who have stubborn areas of fat that no matter what they do in terms of diet or exercise just won’t shift, with the results showing gradually over a period of weeks after the procedure. At UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton, which has so far performed hundreds of the procedures since December and the New Year, Hanna McCormac, says: “I had my love handles done myself. The fat dies, the skin tightens, it’s incredibly easy and it only takes about an hour. The beauty is its permanent. If you eat a lot you’ll gain weight in other places, so you 46

need to lead a healthy lifestyle and watch your diet, but the fat that we freeze doesn’t come back.”

or other tissue. Over the next few weeks and months, the fat cells shrink and begin to die.”

Hanna McCormac said there had been a rush for the procedure by men, who were attracted by its non-invasive nature compared with liposuction. There are no incisions, scars or suction hoses. Only 13 per cent of her usual Ultrasound Cavitation clientele are men, but for fat freezing it rises to 45 per cent. “The men have their love handles treated” she says. “The other place is the tummy, and they also have their man boobs done which is becoming increasingly popular. Women go for love handles, muffin tops, the thighs and arms. Patients like it because there is no discomfort during the procedure and it only takes one hour to complete. Although this method does not offer the more extensive fat loss available from liposuction, it is a great alternative for those with smaller areas of fat offering up to 30-40% reduction after a single treatment.”

With their exclusive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ machine, UltraSlim Clinics can now provide the same quality treatments as London’s Harley Street Clinics only at a fraction of the cost. Hanna explains how. “Our exclusive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ device uses 4 hand pieces, unlike most other clinics including the top clinics in London which only use 1 hand piece, therefore we are able to treat larger or 4 different areas simultaneously which means you receive more value for money in addition to reducing the time needed to complete treatments. With traditional machines you would spend 4 hours to have 4 areas treated such as upper tummy, then lower tummy and then each love handle. However we can treat all 4 areas during a single 1 hour treatment reducing time and costs for everyone involved. It’s because of this technology and capability that we can offer the most cost effective Cryolipolysis treatments in the Midlands with prices starting from only £125 per area, compared to other clinics which charge £300 - £800 per area”.

The temperature of the machines used to freeze away the fat is kept secret, but the idea of using extreme cold to damage fat cells first surfaced in the Seventies, when it was discovered that some children who ate ice lollies developed cheek dimples. According to Hanna, it “targets and cools fat cells to temperatures that trigger their natural death”. She adds: “Because lipids crystallise faster than normal cells, there is no damage to nerves

re Kate McGeary Skinca A natural approach to looking your best, whatever your age. Kate’s approach to developing her signature facials is based on her personal belief that ageing is a natural process and needn’t automatically lead to our skin losing its youthful vitality. By taking care of our skin daily using effective but safe products and including traditional methods of facial exercise and massage, our skin and facial contours may be maintained and even improved. All of Kate’s facials are based on Facial Rejuvenation Massage, otherwise known as the ‘natural facelift’. Facial Rejuvenation is a gentle, noninvasive facial massage technique. It works mainly by freeing up the constrictions within the facial muscles that can be caused by the day to day stresses we all experience and thereby encouraging a ‘lifted’ appearance to the face. The massage may help restore the skin’s suppleness and ‘bounce’ by toning the collagen and elastin fibres that help keep our skin smooth and firm. The very precise hand movements across the skin also stimulates blood and lymph circulation, helping to eliminate toxins and promote the supply of nutrients and generally improving the appearance of the skin.

Facial rejuvenation massage is a combination of Indian Face Massage and other healing techniques including acupressure, which means the whole treatment is wonderfully relaxing and rejuvenating. Clients leave feeling refreshed and nurtured. Kate uses the award-winning Neal’s Yard Remedies skincare range in her facials. The products use beautiful natural ingredients such as rosehip oil, jojoba and the essential oil frankincense, all proven to help promote healthy skin and delay the signs of ageing. The products are organic and are 100% free of parabens and synthetic chemicals. Kate has designed her facials so that clients can choose a treatment that is appropriate for them.

Benefits of Facial Rejuvenation can include:

All facials include the Facial Rejuvenation Massage:

• Reduced wrinkles and habitual expression lines

1. Express Facial Rejuvenation Massage. Facial rejuvenation massage is performed as a stand- alone treatment without using any products. This treatment takes 45 minutes.

• Reduced under-eye puffiness • Improved skin tone and complexion • Better blood & lymphatic circulation • Increased elimination of toxins • Brighter & more alert eyes

2. Standard Facial Rejuvenation Massage. As well as the facial massage, this includes cleanse,

• Relief of stress-related symptoms - headaches, eyestrain, insomnia

tone, facial serum and moisturiser. This treatment takes 60 minutes. 3. Luxury Facial Rejuvenation Massage. As well as facial rejuvenation massage, this includes cleanse, tone, hot towels, facial mask, serum and moisturiser - 90 minutes. The most effective way of improving your skin is to book a course of treatments. If you book and pay for a series of treatments, we are able to offer you six treatments for the price of 5. An important element of a Kate McGeary Facial is the extensive after care information and advice that is provided. Kate has prepared a series of ‘How to Guides’, these enable clients to continue looking after their skin at home. After all, it is the day to day care we take of our own skin that is the most powerful tool for ensuring our skin retains its vitality and glow. It is Kate’s goal to help her clients achieve this. Kate provides her facials in a beautiful purpose built therapy room based in Wimblebury, Cannock. The treatment room offers clients a calm and private space within which they can relax knowing they won’t be rushed.

“I have been lucky to experience a 6 week course of facial treatments carried out by Kate McGeary Skincare. The whole experience from start to finish is highly recommended and words cannot really express just how refreshed, relaxed and rejuvenated your skin feels after just one 90 minute session, so after a course it’s fantastic. One of the highlights of the experience for me personally is just how relaxed Kate makes you feel once you enter the treatment room and all your worries and stress of the day is soon released and forgotten. Especially once you are lying on a heated bed, all comfortable, and the facial begins. I am fully relaxed and within minutes soon asleep.” Lisa, Cannock

• A hammer toe may cause a corn on the top of the toe. • Infections and ulcers can also occur. • In severe cases a mallet toe, trigger toe, claw toe or a hammer toe may create a downward pressure on the foot, which can result in hard skin and corns on the soles of the feet. Causes of Hammer Toes • Inappropriate shoes (high heels, tight shoes). • Flat feet can result in hammer toes. • High arch feet can also result in buckling the toes. • Bunions are a major cause of hammer toes. • Rheumatoid Arthritis. Treatments for Hammer Toes • Wide fitting low heeled shoes & trainers. • Make sure stockings, tights and socks are not too constrictive. • Apply moisturising cream to keep skin soft regularly.

• Moulded toe separators, toe props and dorsal crescents. • See a Chiropodist/Podiatrist for removal of corns & callous.

t Who Joined n e d tu S 2 1 r a e Y r lo y Philippa Ta ears Old Y 3 e g A 9 9 9 1 In l o o h The Sc I clearly recall my first day at Chase Grammar School although back then it was Chase Academy. I was in Nursery and the welcome I had was so wonderful that the days flew by. I would only drink juice, but the headmistress at the time exclaimed that I would drink water. Now I drink it all the time. The discipline to be respectful and polite at just 2 years and 11 months, has carried on through my life. The teaching methods were fun, but productive and the encouragement to read and write at a young age certainly aided me for the future, accelerating my development. There was a time called play and discovery which built on social skills, communication to work out what the objects related to outside of school life. Through Reception, Year 1 and 2, the sporting activities consisted of dance, swimming, interesting ball and bean bag games. This highlights where my passion for sport roots from, finding it effortless to perform the tasks set. Through these years we were taught story writing, simple arithmetic, spelling and some of the early times tables. This enabled me to gain an advantage straight away leading up to my GCSEs, knowing I would not lack knowledge, learning the required syllabus and utilising my time better. At sports days, we were taught sportsmanship and respect for other people, the races were simple but effective as it highlighted my competitive streak, allowing myself to push for more. The sportsmanship granted me control over how I reacted at an early stage, which has helped me to become a top level athlete. 50

Philippa archery - Philippa has gone from strength to strength with her passion for archery, representing England and winning many competitions

As a whole, we were taught to care for each other, share our belongings with each other and to this day I remember people’s birthdays I have lost touch with. As we went through the years we were taught to give and look after each other. For example non uniform day, sponsored walks where a specific charity a year gets all the raised money. At Christmas there was always a Nativity performance at St.Luke’s church Cannock, playing Mary was the highlight and that Joseph would not hold my hand. We also performed for the residential home

who enjoyed our performance. There were also solos sung for once in Royal David’s City which boosted confidence for boys to sing, showing nobody would discriminate, giving them free will. To add to this school plays are performed down to year 1 to develop communication, acting and confidence at a young age. This has lead me to reading in church with ease in front of 400 people. From years 3-6 we were given the chance to play team sports like, hockey, netball, rounders, football and cricket against other teams, developing team building, producing a team player. The turn of captain was passed around through each match to give the responsibilities to all students, this allowed us to analyse who played the best and we were allowed an input to whom received player of the match. From these year groups we had inter house competitions which further developed our sportsmanship abilities not just in a sporting situation but a life like one. Encouraged to sing, dance and play an instrument, enhanced a proactive lifestyle to improve skills, trying to find our talents individually. Having school concerts in front of the school portrayed the message the school wanted, no matter how good or bad you are at your instruments it’s the taking part that counts. This message radiates through all years as house points are up for grabs if you take part, every house point counts in who wins the house shield!

Jackie Williams

Headmistress of Chase Grammar When asked to write more about school for local magazines I wondered just how much people would want to read what the Headmistress says. It struck me that since our children take visitors around on Open day and tell our visitors all about the school, it might be more interesting to ask what the children think. The text from Pip landed on my desk and I was impressed that she had managed to fit it in at this busy time. I wondered whether to edit what she has written but in the end decided that Pip tells it as it is. She has experienced most of her life here and knows that it is like to grow up here. When she first joined us Pip was so small that we had to stack two chairs together so that she could reach the dining table. Now she is a young woman making choices about university. She has made the most of her opportunities here and as she begins to think about where she will go next I am pleased that she will look back at her time here

with such positive and fond Philippa aged memories. We 3 on two chairs are also sure that she will leave with the best academic results that she could achieve. Academically our students do well with our A Level results consistently placing us at the top of the league tables. This is a result of much work and very early on we begin by focussing on basic skills. We make sure that the foundations are secure before we begin to build on them. We know our children well and later on we are able to tailor the curriculum to create the best course for each child. However, there is more to an education than results. It is about developing the whole person and it is about getting children to recognise their own strengths and skills and putting them to good use. There are ample opportunities here and in the same way that life is very much about getting out what we put in, children get out of school what they put in. What we do is encourage them and tell them that they can do it, they just need to try.

Above all I’ve spent 15 years of my life here and it’s been very enjoyable, I now wish I could go back to these years, however I’m glad they have been good and worth the money my parents paid for. 01952 321334 | WWW.STAFFORDSHIREOUTLOOK.CO.UK

roof and walls. In 2007 we erected scaffolding to inspect the roof and discovered that the chimneys and the roof needed attention, so we carried out some emergency repairs and left the scaffolding in place to protect the passers-by from any falling tiles. We then opened discussions with English Heritage about what we could and could not do with the building as it is Grade 2* listed. In the early days our views and that of English Heritage and Shropshire Council on what should happen to the building were very different and so discussions were protracted. Eventually by 2011, after a few personnel changes it all came together, grants were agreed in principle, architects chosen, tenders submitted, and eventually work commenced in September 2012 and the old scaffolding was taken down and substantial new scaffolding was erected.

The building that fronts the entrance to the Old Mill Antique Centre is a Grade 2* listed building. A building was first built there in 1670 and part of this still forms part of the present structure. The building was then extended in both the Georgian and Victorian era and it has always been a significant building in the Low town area of Bridgnorth. There are no records to show who built the early house or who lived there for the first 120 years. However whoever lived there in the early years must have 52

travelled widely, because there are remnants of Chinese wall paper that dates in its designs to around 1650. The Ridley family had owned the land and buildings from about 1850, first as Maltsters and then as Seed Merchants and on Friday 13th September 1957 there was a fire and the large Mill Building was seriously damaged and about half of the population of Bridgnorth were on the Castle Walk watching it burn. Luckily the Town House was untouched. My brothers and I bought the land and buildings in 1995 and opened the Old Mill Antique Centre in April 1996, for the first few years we let the ground floor of the Town House as offices, but the house needed a lot of restoration - particularly the

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL/MAY 2014

Halfway through June 2013 the scaffolding was taken down as most of the work had been completed. There was dancing in the street! Our neighbours have had ugly scaffolding spoiling the look of Mill Street for 6 years, and now as the pictures will show they have a very good looking building instead. They have been very patient and I hope they also agree that the building now looks great. The whole of the roof has been retiled with hand made tiles identical to the originals, chimneys have been rebuilt, Georgian sash windows have been restored and the stone work on the front of the building has been repaired and painted. There is still a front door to be fitted as the photo shows this will be fitted soon as the hand carved brackets are finished. Phase 2 of the refurbishment will be when work on the side of the house begins; when more windows will be refurbished and the walls re-rendered and painted. There will still be refurbishing to do on the inside but the building is sound and will be in safe and secure for another 100 years or more‌

Company Car Tax Company cars are a common employee benefit, despite UK company car tax being substantial. Special company car tax rules also affect the employer’s tax position. Both employer and employee should take the cost of company car tax into account when deciding whether to provide company cars and how to deal with the cost of fuel.

Company car tax – benefits for employees Employees pay company car tax based on the list price of the car, its emissions and type of fuel. The list price is multiplied by a percentage (based on the emissions and fuel type) to work out the value of the company car tax benefit that is subject to income tax. The percentage varies between 10 and 35%, with lower percentages of zero (for zero-emission electric cars). Vans are also subject to company car tax if there is any private use other than simply driving between home and work. Van drivers are taxed on a flat £3,000 benefit. There are a few exceptions. Employees (other than company directors) with total earnings below £8,500 will not pay company car tax. In addition, company car tax is not charged on pool cars or company cars used exclusively for business.

Company car tax – fuel An employer can reimburse an employee for the cost of fuel used for business travel or they can use a mileage rate. If the employee is reimbursed using the HM Revenue & Customs advisory fuel rates, there are no tax implications. Advisory fuel rates are published four times a year, based on petrol prices and the average fuel efficiencies of cars grouped by engine size. Higher mileage rates must be justified or a liability to tax and National Insurance contributions will arise. If fuel is also provided for private use, there is an additional company car tax on this extra benefit. The value of the car fuel benefit is calculated as the fuel benefit multiplier multiplied by the same percentage as used for the company car tax. For vans, the taxable fuel benefit is set at a flat rate.

Company car tax for employers Employers pay Class 1A National Insurance contributions on the taxable value of the company car tax benefit and the company car fuel benefit. The capital allowances available for company car purchases depend on the car’s level of emissions. The higher the emission, the more you pay. For emissions below 95g/ km (2013-14), there is a 100% first year allowance. Company cars purchased by the self-employed are treated differently. Unless the car is exclusively used for business, the allowances you can claim are reduced in proportion to the level of private use. If a company car is leased, the full lease costs are an allowable expense for emissions below 160 g/km. Otherwise, only some of the costs are allowable. VAT can be recovered on business fuel only. If you provide fuel for private use and want to reclaim VAT 54

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL/MAY 2014

on all the fuel purchased, you must pay a fuel scale charge — again, based on the level of emissions. VAT can only be recovered on purchases if the car is exclusively for business use. 50% of the VAT on leasing company cars can be recovered, or 100% if the car is exclusively for business use.

Company car tax planning Company car tax may mean that it is more tax-effective for employees to use their own cars and be reimbursed. You can pay up to HMRC’s approved mileage rate (45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25p per mile thereafter) without any tax or National Insurance being due. If you are going to provide a company car, clearly a lowemissions vehicle is more tax-efficient. The value of the benefit is increased by including additional non-taxable extras: maintenance, servicing and repairs; Vehicle Excise Duty (commonly referred to as ‘road tax’); and insurance. Think carefully about whether it is worth providing fuel for private use. The tax can easily outweigh the value of this benefit for the employee, while the cost to the business of paying for the fuel can make this an expensive benefit to offer. It’s worth taking advice on the full tax implications of offering company cars and whether to lease or buy – the rules become stricter year-on-year to encourage businesses and individuals to buy and drive more environmentally-friendly cars. se’s Military Past

nd Cannock Cha The Glacial Boulder a es By Robert van der Do

Among the many key attractions of Cannock Chase is the curious sight of a large granite rock sitting aloft a prominently-placed concrete plinth. This is known locally as “the Glacial Boulder” and has been in its place since the 1950s, although it is understood to have been deposited from as far away as Scotland at the end of the Ice Age. The base pre-dates the placement of the boulder by a few decades, having been constructed during the First World War when the area was a large military camp. What makes the boulder “glacial” is the fact that it so clearly differs from the size and type of rock found native to the area and hence it is believed to have been transported by glacial ice. There are no granite outcrops anywhere in the Midlands

56

area, the nearest being found over 130 miles away in the Lake District. The boulder on the Chase has been matched to the rock outcrop at Cniffel in Dumfries and Galloway in the southern uplands of Scotland, about 170 miles from the Chase. The boulder is therefore, just like considerably bigger and more famous examples found in North America like Big Rock and Indian Rock, an indicator of prehistoric glacier movements. Its journey from Scotland most probably lasted over 10,000 years, during which time the edges were worn down, giving the present rounded appearance. The glacial boulder in discussion is actually one of several found on the Chase and owes it’s more noteworthy status to its being the only one mounted on to a base. With its beautiful heathland surroundings the Glacial Boulder, or more particularly the car park that it adorns and which is named after it, is a landmark starting point for walks across the Chase. It is situated just off the Staffordshire Way path, along the Chase Road on the way out of Brocton Village. The aforementioned military camp wherein the car park now lies was indeed known as Brocton Camp and was one of two within Cannock Chase that were constructed with the permission of estate-owner Lord Lichfield in the autumn of 1914. The other camp

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL/MAY 2014

was in the northern Rugeley and hence known as Rugeley Camp. Both camps were large, capable of holding up to 40,000 men at one time and providing a training headquarters for up to 500,000 men. The entire infrastructure of the camps, including the roads leading to and from it, the water supply and the sewage system were specially created from scratch prior to work beginning on the huts and other structures. The camps had been thriving centres, each with their own amenities including a church, a bakery, a post office and even a theatre. At the end of the war, however, the camps were no longer needed and once the soldiers moved on the camps began to resemble ghost towns, with only the huts remaining. It was at the request of Lord Lichfield that the huts were eventually sold off and they were transported to new locations by horse and cart. It brought an end to the Chase’s significant military involvement.

S Roadster Lotus Exigeb Ta ylor by Ro

The recent sale of Royal Mail. A Disney fairytale. What to have for lunch today. And the irrelevance of supercars. It’s a funny old stream of consciousness, but let me explain: I’ve just been introduced to the Lotus Exige S Roadster. And I’m hungry. ’Nuff said? Not quite. You see, the first thing that strikes me as I admire the latest example from Norfolk’s favourite four-wheeled son, is: will I be able to get in and then fit inside its snug cabin? Once I’ve opened the door I am met with an aperture so tiny that if it got any smaller I’d be wearing a postage stamp. In fact, let’s be frank: admission to this vehicle is tighter than the selection process at Eton, as it requires contortionist moves to get in: it really redefines your understanding of the ‘Lotus position.’ I expect the interior space to be just as fussy about who can sit inside; imagining it to be as elitist as the doorman who precludes entry to the finest restaurants and clubs, something along the lines of “I’m sorry, sir, you appear to have neither the requisite racing driver’s toned buttocks nor the petite and nimble feet of a ballerina to be happily accommodated in this car.” This is not the case, however. I find that the cabin fits all 6ft 3” of me like Cinderella’s slipper. And moreover, it’s a very nice place to be. The ergonomics are spot-on; the switch-gear is solid and tactile and the driving position is delightfully low-slung and adjustable. So, after no further ado, I turn the key, then manually select first - which in itself is a rare joy in a world obsessed with starter buttons and paddle-shift gear-changers. Thus far the Exige is old school in the best of ways, when driving was an event, not a perfunctory chore; there was a sense of occasion as there is here today, especially when I touch the throttle to excite the 3.5 litre supercharged V6 engine into life. It’s not long before the Lotus demonstrates exactly what is missing in today’s sports cars, namely a positive connection between driver and road. Every lump and bump is relayed through the steering with an almost incomparable immediacy; every tiny steering input is communicated so fluently to the front wheels that you are left suspecting witchcraft - it’s almost a telepathic link which develops between you and the car. It handles on the road so beautifully it’s like you are driving using only ‘the force.’ 62

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL/MAY 2014

Performance is not only what this car is about, but since the real joy of the Lotus cannot be quantified, here goes: 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds and a maximum speed of 145 mph from the screaming V6, which develops 345 bhp and 295 lb ft of torque. And although these may be figures to rival some supercars, the price of all this performance couldn’t be further from them: the Exige S Roadster costs just £52,900. The price may well be the same as its coupe sibling - so too its weight at 1166 kg - but what about the ‘x-factor’ which lopping the top off a car brings to the driving experience? Its missing roof certainly removes the access and egress issues, making re-entry now far less difficult than the task facing Nasa when bringing a space shuttle back home. Exposure to the elements only serves to make you feel like you are going faster still and hearing the supercharger’s whine is an addictive adrenalin pump. The Lotus is riotously good fun. There must be something in the water up in Norfolk when it comes to cutting the top off things, but, unlike Oliver Cromwell before them, Lotus has succeeded in creating a bloody marvel rather than a bloody mess.
