Community Grant

L-R: Hayley Cliff, Pathway; Cllr Alison Spicer; Janis Lomas, President S Cannock & District; Dickie James, Staffordshire Women’s Aid

The two main charities being supported by SI Cannock & District in this, their Diamond Anniversary year, are the Pathway Project and Staffordshire Women’s Aid. Both organisations provide support and refuges for women victims of domestic violence and their children. There are numerous families resident at these Refuges at any one time; most families stay there for around 6 months. Part of the resettlement is around enabling the children to regain confidence and self esteem and also to reintroduce them to the idea of having fun. Children are traumatised when they enter the Refuge and find socialising difficult. They also need an outlet for their feelings and the opportunity to share time with other children who understand what they are going through. Trips and visits are an important part of this programme, though the organisations do not always have the funding available. The club recently made an application for a grant to local County Councillor Alison Spicer, through her Staffordshire Local Community Fund and members were absolutely delighted when it was successful. A grant of £1,000 has enabled them to present cheques for £500.00 to each organisation; these funds are to be used to enable mothers and children to have much 06

needed days out together, giving them the opportunity to do things together as families without any worry. President of SI Cannock & District Janis Lomas thanked Cllr Spicer for approving the grant; Cllr Spicer said that she was really pleased to be able to support the project adding that she knows from her own experience as a mother the importance of spending time doing fun things together. Hayley Cliff, Operations Director at the Pathway Project and Dickie James, CEO of Staffordshire Women’s Aid accepted the cheques. Hayley said: “A big thank you to everyone concerned. Dickie added: “This will make a positive difference in a way we wouldn’t have been able to otherwise”. Anyone who wishes to offer help or obtain advice from SI, Pathway or Women’s Aid can do so: For more information about Cannock Soroptimists call 07971 494510 or email si.cannock@outlook.com Pathway have a 24 hour number 01543 676800 whilst Staffordshire Women’s Aid offer advice, guidance and help at www.staffordshirewomensaid.org and have a 24 hour helpline: 0870 2700 123.

Lesley Smith in the costume of a Tudor Housewife with members of SI Cannock & District in the Great Hall at Tutbury Castle

Last Saturday members and friends of SI Cannock & District spent an afternoon at Tutbury Castle where they enjoyed lunch followed by a talk from Lesley Smith, Curator of the Castle. Lesley is an historian, specializing in Tudor history as well as other areas; she is also an excellent speaker. On this occasion Lesley wore a Tudor costume made of velvet and with embroidery 08

detail which would have been worn by a woman of the middle class – the costume itself weighs around 3 and a half stone! – and she spoke with her wonderful enthusiasm and wit about the life of a Tudor Housewife. We learned that many marriages were arranged with the average of age for marriage being 22 or 23 for women and 25 or 26 for men. They would have many children, though the average number to survive would be 4. One of the main roles for such a middle class woman would be to look after and often make the medicines which were prepared for anything from bad breath to the plague. She would be responsible for the food to be served – with up to 32 different dishes at any one meal; for brewing beer, growing flax …and so much more. She would have 6 or 7 servants to run the household – these would all be

male. As well as her responsibilities for the household women were instructed to be quiet at all times! It was very unusual for a girl to be taught to read or to write though there were some accomplished women writers of the time. Women then, as now, took a pride in their appearance and hair colour was very important to them: they used urine or liquorice to dye their hair! Lesley showed some of the clothes worn by Tudor children, they were all beautiful and in many instances very similar to clothes worn by young children today. Lighter evenings at The Lighting Warehouse Lighter evenings are here at last. This is the time of year when our gardens become an extension of our homes. Lazy evenings spent relaxing with family and friends at a BBQ perhaps. To create the perfect setting visit Paul at The Lighting Warehouse for advice on lighting for your decking or discrete lighting to highlight an ornamental feature or pond. How about a more functional lamppost for the drive way or indeed an outside lamp or a security light by the door or gateway? When the evening turns chilly, you can retreat into

the conservatory. The Lighting Warehouse has a large range of lamp bases and shades or decorative up lighters ideal for lighting up your conservatory. To add to your comfort why not install a fan to cool you down when the temperature rises. On the other hand if you prefer to make the most of the longer lighter evenings by decorating, call in at the Lighting Warehouse for some illuminating ideas. Remember, to ensure you achieve the effect you desire the home consultation is available all year round.

Cliff and Elaine Whiteley

People interested in fostering are being asked to change a life in 2015 as part of a new fostering campaign. Every day in Staffordshire more than 700 children live with over 380 foster families because they are unable to live at home. Some of the children may have experienced neglect and abuse, or have witnessed domestic violence or substance misuse. Whatever their experiences, all of them will be suffering the trauma of being separated from their own families and will need love, support and stability. Staffordshire County Council’s Fostering Service is behind the latest drive to recruit a further 60 foster families over the next twelve months. Cllr Mike Lawrence, Cabinet Member for children at Staffordshire County council explained that foster carers can provide these children with what they need and often give them their first positive experience of family life. Mike said: “Staffordshire has a wonderful group of foster carers who do a fantastic job. But, with high numbers of children still in care, we need more people of all backgrounds to come forward and foster, especially 12

for teenagers, children with disabilities and groups of brothers and sisters. “We are looking for people who can offer children stability, consistency and a loving family home where they can develop and grow. All our carers receive a professional allowance, and we provide full training, ongoing support and access to a support network of other foster carers. “Foster carers do make a real difference to the lives of the children they look after so I would encourage people who have the desire to help and the love to give, to please get in touch.” Cliff and Elaine Whiteley are one Staffordshire family who have been fostering for 15 years. Cliff said, ”We foster children on a long-term basis and we’ve been fostering now for over 15 years. When we first started we didn’t really know what to expect but knew it was a great way of making a difference to a child’s life. Fostering is very rewarding but can also be challenging, even when the children are very young. “Sometimes it’s simple things like having somewhere that they can call

home or just being part of a loving family. We have fostered six children and even though some are in their twenties now they still keep in touch and call round when they need help.” Foster carers Sally and Andrew Hayward have been fostering for four years and look after sibling groups. Sally said: “Fostering a sibling group is hard work. You’ll need boundless energy but it’s very rewarding. Watching their individual personalities develop and seeing the progress they make so quickly is wonderful. Keeping brothers and sisters together and watching their bond develop is very special. Managing 3 at the same time when they all want your attention is interesting but I have great support from my friends and family which is very important.” Staffordshire’s Fostering Service is rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted for the support it offers to foster carers. Most people are able to foster; there’s no upper age limit, you don’t need to have a job or own your own house and you don’t have to be in a relationship. People can also foster a child on a short or long-term basis; just at weekends or school holidays.

A series of information events with opportunities to meet real foster carers have been arranged as part of the latest campaign. People can find out more at www.staffordshire.gov.uk/fosteringandadoption , by calling 0800 169 2061 or Text ‘Foster’ to 60003 for a call back.

Pillaton Tea Room We really do pride ourselves on good home cooked food and we spend many hours preparing and cooking our cakes and meals from scratch so that our customers can enjoy the taste of freshly cooked food. We also like to listen to our customers suggestions and feedback and have acted upon those requests off customers, one of our regular customers asked back in September if we were ever thinking of doing cottage pie as it was his favourite meal, we found the best way of making it fresh every day and then we added it to the menu. Now it is one of our best-selling meals!

We are a family run tea room situated in the grounds of Pillaton Garden Centre, in Pillaton, Penkridge on the (B5012) Cannock Road, ST19 5RZ. Just 10 minutes from Cannock by car, 15 minutes from Rugeley and 20 minutes from Stafford. Our tea room is located in a beautiful Victorian glass house and boasts fantastic decor and surrounding’s. We can cater for up to 50 people inside and out and during the summer we have tables and chairs outside to enjoy the sunny weather and in the winter we have a fantastic log burner always burning away to keep you warm and cosy. The atmosphere is lovely and very friendly and we have brought back traditional good customer service where the customer comes first. We have a vast menu starting the day with our breakfast menu that is served until 12, full English, bacon and egg sandwiches and many more. We also have a wide range of tasty lunch time snacks including oven baked jacket potatoes, fresh cut sandwiches, toasted Panini’s, all served with our home-made coleslaw. The main menu consists of , gammon, scampi, cottage pie, chicken curry, chilli, local butchers burger,

Thai fishcakes, cod and chips and many more. We also have a fantastic kids menu for £3.99 and beautiful tasting coffees and special tea to try. Pillaton Tea Room is run by myself Sarah and my husband Paul since February 2014. Paul and I decided that we wanted to create a tea room where people could go for very good value home-made food. We bake all of our cakes and meals at the tea room, from fresh fruit & cherry scones to cottage pie, chicken curry and chilli con carne. We have a very varied menu with lots of different lunch time meals and snacks to choose from. These days I think it’s hard to find somewhere that you can get good quality food without it costing too much. We are expanding all the time as our customers are growing from strength to strength and we have decided to even start catering in the evenings for special events and we are really pleased with the bookings we have received. We are looking into other dietary factors such as gluten-free and celiac to see if there is anything we can do to provide food for people with the dietary requirements, if you would like to follow the progress of this I will be updating the website and our Facebook page in due course. We have recently added over six new homemade meals and we will be adding a summer menu in March for something lighter to enjoy in the warm weather.

Our customers are our friends and it is always a joy to see regular/new customers come in for chat and a bite to eat. We have a lot of charitable groups that visit our tea room and we make every effort to help them create a lovely atmosphere to get together in. We can reserve tables for group bookings or any customer with specific requirements. We are also now catering on special evenings such as Valentines night and Mother’s Day , we don’t normally open at night for Valentine’s Day but we have had a lot of customers asking us too which is brilliant. orting p p su b lu C s n io L k c o n Can ulance the Midlands Air Amb

The Midlands Air Ambulance (MAA) is a Charitably Funded Service for which many people within the county of Staffordshire have reason to be grateful. Staffordshire includes many large rural areas, including Cannock Chase and The Roaches, to name but two. We have large farming and equestrian communities plus a busy motorway system which runs through the county. All of these have been well served by the MAA and we need them to continue helping us for years to come. I have no doubt you will have seen the Air Ambulance flying over the County and you probably know of somebody whose life has been saved by the rapid intervention of the MAA, especially in the more inaccessible areas of the county. You may even have reason to be indebted to them yourselves.

Operating from strategically located regional airbases, 90 per cent of the region is within reach within eight minutes. If a patient reaches hospital within the Golden Hour (60 minutes after their injury) their chances of survival are dramatically increased. That is why the rapid response of the Midlands Air Ambulance is so vital in an emergency situation. Cannock Lions are an active group of people from Cannock and surrounding district who have united to raise funds and provide assistance for those in our area who need help and support. Over the last few years we have provided equipment and support for young and old alike plus assisting in service projects. One of the organisations that we have chosen to support in 2015 is the Midlands Air Ambulance Later in the year we are holding an ‘Auction Evening’ at The Moat House in Acton Trussell ST17 0RJ on Thursday 23rd of April - St Georges Day. This is one of the premier hotels in the area with an outstanding reputation for quality.

The Midlands Air Ambulance has the largest operating region in the UK. Since 1991, the charity’s three aircraft have responded to more than 42,000 missions averaging 2,000 per year, making it one of the longest established and busiest air ambulance organisations in the UK. Each Midlands Air Ambulance mission costs £2,500 and in excess of £6.5 million is needed each year to keep its fleet operational, which is donated entirely by the public and local businesses. The charity’s three aircraft each carry a crew comprising pilot, two paramedics or flight doctors plus full life-support medical equipment. 16

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MARCH/APRIL 2015

The evening will have a strong patriotic ‘St Georges’ theme with red and white everywhere! All proceeds from the auction will be donated to The Midland Air Ambulance. Tickets are £50 per head to include some ‘bubbly’ during the reception during which time you will be able to view items in the Silent Auction. There will follow a superb three course meal and then the live Auction. There will also be raffle tickets on sale throughout the evening with the draw being made at the end of the night. We would like to make an appeal for Main Auction lots – the sort of thing that ‘money can’t buy’; experiences, holidays, collectible items or the like. We are also holding a ‘silent auction’ and raffle for which we would be grateful of donations. We already have some excellent items for the auction but can always find room for more. If we find ourselves in the fortunate position of having more than we need for the evening we will make sure that everything is used to raise funds for the MAA If you have anything you would like to donate to this very worthwhile charity or would like to book your tickets please feel free to contact us. We do hope you and your friends would like to join us on this very special evening. To book or contact us email: cannocklionsclub@hotmail.com or ring 0845 8334967/07708 662652.

orld War W st ir F e th te ra o em m Tree planted to com A tulip tree has been planted in Cannock Park to commemorate the First World War. The tree was planted by the Cannock Townswomen Guild who wanted to mark the passing of the Centenary of the First World War and to honour those that gave their lives in the war. Val Beale, Chair of the Committee said “The grounds that later became the park were used during the war as a venue for raising funds for the forces and acted as a morale booster for troops both here and abroad. A plaque WAS unveiled on Saturday the 31st January at 11.00am by the Committee with the tree for future generations to visit and see the tree grow.” Councillor Christine Mitchell, Portfolio Leader for Culture and Sport said “I would like to thank the Townswomen Guild for 28

their generous donation of supplying the tree and planting it in Cannock Park. Cannock Park is home to over 30 different species of trees, but with over 60% of them now over mature/ mature, it is a fitting gesture to plant a young tree of a different species to those already in the Park.”

culties fi if d l a c si y h p d n a g Adults with learnin taffordshire University teach students at S Three ladies with learning difficulties helped to deliver a teaching session at Staffordshire University for students studying on a Clinical Psychology Doctorate.

this organisation focuses very much on individual needs. Keeping groups small and delivering in peoples local community means that service users get very individual attention.

The three are members of Aspire Stafford Limited, an organisation that provides daytime activities in Staffordshire for people who learn differently.

Preferring not to offer set courses but individual bespoke training plans. Aspire offers progression routes for people wanting to move on and gain new skills, find employment, live more independently or create new interests and friendship groups.

Latifa Gower, Julia Fletcher and Dawn Pritchard all attend sessions to develop independent living, work skills, literacy and numeracy.

Working in a variety of settings using innovative teaching methods Aspire offers opportunities to teach people who learn differently.

Developing communication, budgeting and organisational skills practically and involving a new experience makes learning fun.

Julie Sleight who set up Aspire, was asked by Dr Joanna Saddington a Consultant Clinical Psychologist to come along and describe the barriers to her students, that people with learning difficulties experience when they engage with health professionals. Julie explained that:

Learners are able to have a big say in the way their programme is delivered and choose from a very wide and ever expanding list of activities. Some of the activities being:

Trips and outings are regular events at Aspire with the organisation encouraging all learners to take part in the choosing and planning process.

Initially the girls were apprehensive but soon got used to the surroundings and really enjoyed meeting all the tutors and students. Joanna showed us around the campus and spent a lot of time before the session preparing them, so it wasn’t too daunting. By the time they got started they were really keen and spoke very well without any support from us. It was an amazing experience for us all. The activity gave a massive boost to their confidence, leaving them feeling ready for another challenge. They were presented with certificates which they have all proudly framed.

Healthy living, eating and exercise, cooking, budgeting, safety in the home and the community, being safe when accessing public transport, investigating and using community facilities, arts and crafts, music and movement, performing arts, needlecraft and home decoration, gardening and growing fresh produce on an allotment. When developing literacy, numeracy and IT skills, programmes are made very practical. Making these skills functional and relevant. Recently a small group organised a trip to Media City in Manchester arranging for the entire group to be part of The Countdown television audience.

The University students were very interested in what they had to say, the feedback was really positive with students telling the girls their comments would definitely remain with them and influence their practise when they qualify. In February Aspire will be visited by the first of these psychology students who will see good practise and learn more from our learners. Aspire Stafford Limited offers daytime opportunities for people with learning difficulties in Staffordshire. Set up two years ago and run by experienced and qualified tutors 32

Family Camp out & Activity Weekend Friday 21st – Sunday 23rd August 2015 Pause the computer games, put down the smart phones and shut the lids on those laptops… This summer’s Compton Hospice Fundraising event is all about family time! Bring the whole clan and join the hospice team as they set up camp in the heart of the picturesque Kinver Scout woods from Friday 21st-Sunday 23rd August 2015. Pitch your tent and enjoy a range of crafts and activities including archery and rifle shooting - all for one great price! Let mum master the climbing wall, while dad tries his hand at African drumming and the kids go all Ray Mears in our bushcraft sessions. Alternatively simply soak up the sun and get back to nature as you and your family explore the woodland glades away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. To round things off why not join in the Compton Campfire, complete with a traditional singalong (full weekend campers only). Make this summer one to remember and sign up today! Proceeds go towards Compton Hospice. (Day passes and full weekend without camping tickets also available. Tents not provided for weekend campers.)

Recipe of the month

Serves 4 people

A ‘healthier’ Spaghetti Bolognaise / Chilli Con Quorni EQUIPMENT • 2 large pans - 1 for boiling pasta and 1 for slow cooking sauce • 1 baking sheet / tray • A good cooks knife • Fine grater • Chopping board - I use a good solid thick wooden board - get one and a good knife, it will change your life. INGREDIENTS • 1 pack of Quorn 350g • 1 kilo of fresh vine tomatoes • 2 medium carrots • 2 medium onions • 4 cloves of garlic • Marmite • 1 jar of Sun dried tomato pesto • 1 tube of sun dried tomato paste / puree • Gravy granules (bisto) • Fresh thyme and rosemary • Sea salt • Black peppercorns • 2 measures of Wholewheat spaghetti • Rapeseed oil • Parmesan • Watercress • Balsamic syrup • Red kidney beans • Fresh red chilli • A pinch of cinnamon • 1 jar of roasted red peppers • 2 measures of brown rice INTRO Being as this is the one dish that almost everybody has in their repertoire I thought I would give you an alternative method and ingredient list for making it. If you have been thinking about taking red meat out of your diet or at least cutting right back then this is a great alternative. It is meat free, gluten free, high in protein and fibre and 36

low in calories. Sea salt has slightly lower levels of sodium too but I’m not making any claims - it’s hard enough to know whats good and bad for you these days. METHOD Lay the Quorn out on your baking tray and cook in the oven on 180oC for 15 minutes to brown. While this is happening dice your onions and garlic and soften in a dash of rapeseed oil on a medium heat in one of your pans with the carrots either diced finely or grated and the thyme leaves carefully picked off the stalks (or throw the stalks in and pick out later). Once your onions and carrots have softened dice up the tomatoes and throw in the pan - allow to cook off for about 20 minutes on low to medium heat until the tomatoes start to break down. (While the tomatoes are cooking down get the other pan on and cook the pasta and cool down in cold water, set aside until your sauce is ready). Add a tablespoon of marmite and season with salt and pepper. Add 2 tablespoons of tomato pesto and puree and pour in about 1 litre of water. The most important part of making a sauce is allowing plenty of time to simmer the pan until the water evaporates leaving the ingredients well softened with the flavours developed (keep adding more water and simmering if vegetables aren't soft enough) I only use bisto as an emergency if the sauce is just a little thin and needs a quick helping hand to thicken up at the last minute. You can rub equal amounts of flour and butter together to produce what is known as a beurre manie - this will thicken your sauce also. Once the sauce is ready put your pasta in your empty pan and spoon in enough Bolognese sauce to coat the pasta. Spoon onto your plates and grate some parmesan cheese over. Serve this with watercress and drizzle over some balsamic syrup. With the sauce you have left over put it back on the heat and add in the tin of kidney beans, pinch of cinnamon, sliced chilli and diced roasted peppers. Allow to cool and store in your fridge for up a few days then re-heat thoroughly to over 75˚C to serve with brown rice and soured cream.

sentation Marathon cheque pre On Monday 1st December the organisers of the 17th Carver Wolverhampton Marathon joined the sponsors and charity recipients at the Mayors Parlour for the finale of the events, the presentation of the cheques to the chosen charities for 2014. £17,500 was shared between Compton Hospice, Broadmeadow Special School, West Park Stroke Cycle Group and the Mayoral Charity Fund. On Sunday 7th September more than 2000 people took to the streets of Wolverhampton, running and cycling various distances in the 17th running of the events. The sun shone as competitors lined up for the Cousins 20k cycle ride, Carver marathon and half marathon and the “Banks’s 10k” race. NJB Sports & Physio again sponsored the events and were kept busy on the day tending to the sore limbs and fatigue suffered by all the runners. Greggs the bakers again sponsored, handing out their “goody bags” to all finishers. This is an opportunity to thank all the sponsors and supporters especially Carver Building Supplies who as always give the marathon events their full backing, both financially and with volunteer helpers. Without the sponsorship and support it would be hard to stage such a large event in our city. There are also

many other organisations who support, one amongst being Wolverhampton City Council. A big thank you to you all. The success of the events relies heavily on such committed sponsorship and support. The marathon events are all about encouraging activity for all ages and abilities and it was encouraging to see so many set off in all their different events. The atmosphere in West Park was encouraged by our media sponsors Signal 107. With Dicky Dodd both at the start and later keeping everyone updated as they came through the finish line. The Express & Star helped with news stories to help promote the event as did Wolverhampton West Magazine. Chair Mary Harding quotes; “For me the highlight of the day was watching the hundreds of people set off on their chosen event and then welcoming them back to the park with no serious problems or injuries. “Once again I have further thanks to the planning committee who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure the course is properly set up and marshalled.” The date has been set for 2015. It will be Sunday September 6th and this year there will be a walk added and the organisers hope to attract even more people into the park to take part in the annual fundraising event. To view pictures from the 2014 event visit the marathon website www.carverwolverhamptonmarathonevents.co.uk and follow the link to Brian Smith photos.

which gives elasticity to the skin. The radio frequencies cause water molecules in the deeper layers of skin to vibrate, this in turn creates friction which causes the heating effect. When heat is applied to collagen fibres, they shrink and tighten up, and over time following the treatment, new collagen also forms. Whilst the deeper skin layers are being heated, the top layers are kept cool.

We see adverts for machines that work wonders on our faces and bodies but how do they work? Two of the more widely known pieces of equipment are the CACI machine and the Apilus machine, there are also Radio and Light Frequency machines and many more. Let’s take a brief look at some of them; what they do and how they do it. The ‘CACI’ (Computer Aided Cosmetology Instrument) Microcurrent treatment has been available in the U.K. for cosmetic purposes since the early 1990s. Tiny micro-currents of electricity are used to stimulate facial or other muscles in the body. The stimulation at this level is known as sub-sensory, meaning that you feel very little, if anything at all, and there is no sign of any visible muscle contraction. The muscles are gently exercised, leading to an increase in the production of protein. This tightens and firms up the muscles, reduces slackness and restores a firmer shape and tone to the face or area treated. The ‘Apilus’ electrolysis machine has revolutionised permanent hair removal. This computerised electrolysis machine 48

limits the level of destruction within the hair follicle, targeting only germ cells. Consequently protecting the skin and preventing new hair growth. Since 1875, electrolysis has been and remains the only 100% permanent hair removal method recognized by government regulatory agencies. Indeed, electrolysis permanently destroys germ cells responsible for hair growth by way of insertion of a fine probe in the hair follicle and the application of a current adjusted to each hair type and treatment area. The result is a pain free way of permanently removing unwanted hair. This versatile machine can also remove skin tags and deal with thread veins. The latest Apilus xCell Pur machine utilises a more effective frequency for treatment which makes it efficient, rapid and comfortable. Radio frequency machines provide a non-invasive treatment, using radio waves directed through a probe head which rests on the skin. The radio waves are an energy, directed at the skin to produce a heating effect. This treatment has been used for many decades for a variety of medical applications. The beam of radio frequency targets deeper layers of skin, heating them up. This creates stimulation of the skin and in particular, the collagen, a substance

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MARCH/APRIL 2015

Light frequency treatments can help with various skin problems probably the best known is ‘Blue Light’ therapy to help deal with acne. The blue light kills P. acnes, the bacteria which cause acne on the skin. Killing the bacteria prevents acne from spreading and prevents new pimples from emerging. Blue light therapy is generally not effective if only done once; it needs to be done repeatedly in a series of treatments. Unlike some other high-frequency acne treatments, blue light therapy is painless, though it may cause a slight red coloration to the skin after each treatment. Other colours used in light therapy can help with different problems. The Chase CACI has all of this equipment including the very latest Apilus xCell Pur machine – only the third in the country and the first outside the South of England, plus the World renowned ‘Heaven’ range of skin treatments and offers a range of services tailored to your needs. We don’t want it to be obvious that you have ‘had something done’ we aim for subtlety; giving you that radiant, firm skin we all desire. Why wait? formance clinic er p lf o g t lis ia ec sp y p Active Thera Golf is a popular leisure activity enjoyed by approximately 60 million men, women and juniors globally and unlike some sports can be played throughout life. People who play golf are reported to reduce their risk of death (mortality) by 40% due to the beneficial effects upon lifestyle which golf brings. A round of golf can take between 2-6 hours and within this time golfers walk approximately 6 miles using 13,000 steps and delivering multiple powerful strikes to the golf ball. If golfers carry their clubs (approximate weight 10-15kg) then the demands upon the body are further increased. Modern professional golfers are athletes who play golf and regularly engage in fitness training to improve performance and reduce their injury risk. However even recreational amateur golfers can achieve these same aims through engagement in regular golf specific physical training. This can be adapted to the individual aims of each golfer as not everyone wishes or requires to train like Rory McIlroy! Irrespective of your reason for playing golf if you improve the quality of your movement during your golf swing then you are likely to observe an improved golf game especially if you receive some concurrent coaching from a PGA qualified golf coach. So with this in mind here are 5 tips which can help you toward a better golf game! Better body=Better golf. It is the body which moves the golf club! 1. Get coaching – irrespective of your aims book a session (or ideally group of sessions) with a PGA qualified golf coach. Getting into poor habits when you start playing golf can have a significant impact upon how you improve and incorrect habitual movements are harder to change after sometime. Also there could be movements you are making within your golf swing which could contribute toward injury. 50

2. Warm up – This doesn’t mean just hit some golf balls before playing. Perform a dynamic warm up for 10-15 mins prior to practice, lessons and play and before hitting any shots. Research has shown that up to 80% of golfers don’t warm up! You are 45 times LESS likely to get injured and your clubhead speed and accuracy improve through correct warm up. It’s a complete no brainer – IMPROVED PERFORMANCE AND REDUCED INJURY RISK! 3. Posture – we all spend lots of time sitting and this negatively affects our posture and in many reduces flexibility. Having rounded shoulder posture when addressing the golf ball will impair your ability to rotate correctly and reduce your capacity to produce a controlled and powerful golf swing. Aim to perform regular mobility work in the ankles, hips and thoracic regions to improve your posture over the ball! 4. Train for golf – aim to walk 5-6 miles x3 per week. Do this gradually and increase no more than 10-20% per week. This will allow you to cover the walk distance required during a round of golf. Also most golfers benefit from improved flexibility (in particular rotation of their hips and thoracic spine regions), strength and single leg balance.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MARCH/APRIL 2015

Training to improve these areas will increase your distance and improve accuracy. Try to ensure this training is specific to the movements required for golf and seek advice on this from a specialist golf health & fitness professional if you are unsure! 5. Footwear – consider your selection of golf shoe carefully. Your feet are the only point of contact with the floor throughout the whole of the golf swing and you will be walking up to 6 miles in your golf shoes each round! Aim for shoes which assist foot function – lighter, flexible, adequate traction control features. AVOID shoes which have narrow, shallow toe boxes which taper into a point and golf shoes with very stiff, hard plastic outsoles unless you have been specifically told to opt for this style of shoe by a health professional. The foot provides very important information to our brain during the golf swing and the more efficiently we can sense ground reaction forces then this will aid is in better movement in the golf swing!}}} Active Therapy is a specialist golf performance clinic working with golfers of all standards and ages to improve golf performance. betes Ask the Podiatrist: Dia What is Diabetes Mellitus? This is a condition where you have raised blood glucose levels (called hyperglycaemia) due to a metabolic disorder. There are two main types of diabetes: TYPE I – (Insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitus) where patients control their diabetes with insulin TYPE II – (Non Insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitus) where patients may control their diabetes through diet, tablets or sometimes insulin. Both of these types of diabetes can be harmful to feet. It is essential that everyone with diabetes of either type visit a Podiatrist regularly for a 6 – 12 monthly check up and whenever they have foot problems. Your podiatrist may recommend a much more frequent visit. Why should diabetics see a Podiatrist? Diabetes is directly linked with profound changes to your feet. The circulation to and around your feet can deteriorate meaning you are more

susceptible to infection, less likely to heal quickly and your skin quality reduces meaning it is easier to damage. The sense of feeling in your feet can also reduce so that it is possible to damage your feet and not know about it. It is important we monitor your feet regularly so that we can detect these changes early on. Even some seemingly simple problem like corns, callus or toenail cutting could cause much bigger problems like ulcers, infection, gangrene, and at worst amputation if not treated properly. Basic Guidelines for Diabetics • Wash feet daily and dry thoroughly – especially between the toes, and file nails. • Apply an aqueous cream such as E45 to your feet daily but not between your toes. • Check your feet daily for anything unusual – colour changes, breaks in the skin, swelling, discharge etc. • Always wear shoes or house slippers on your feet to protect them.

• Ensure your shoes are the correct fit and are adjustable – 2 cm heel, laced shoes are the best. Warning Signs Redness, Swelling, Pus, Discharge, Pain. Diabetes health care is a key part of a podiatrists job role.

A Winter Barrier The remedy to a perfect winter complexion With over a month to go until the Spring officially starts it may feel like an eternity given the weathers we are being subjected to and worse still the forecasters have in store for us further chillier weather. Winter as a season should come with multiple warnings including those for our skin. The main culprit is the dry cold air as cold air holds far less moisture as well as central heating, which we all have notched up at the moment, which also holds far less humidity – the effects on our hair and skin can be disastrous. Skin can become dry, flaky and dull sometimes even irritated through the constant winter chills on effected areas especially the exposed areas such as the face and hands. We look at some intense hydration, replenishing that lost moisture balancing the skin along with some colour injection to rid us of that dull winter grey persona leaving your complexion looking soft, smooth and radiant. Try to develop a beauty routine that simply forms part of your daily ritual. We suggest a heavy moisturizer at night time giving your skin maximum time to repair whilst you sleep and a lighter moisturizer in the morning acting as a barrier throughout the day. For intense hydration we love going right back to basics and start the repair process with an intensive

hydrating mask. One to try is the Intensive Revitalising Mask, designed to rehydrate, plump and revitalise skin in just 8 minutes by Crème de la mere priced at £105 or the Bio Essence Hydra Tri-Action Beauty Sleeping Mask, £29.00 available from www.cultbeauty.co.uk. Top Tip to use this is to apply a small amount all over cleansed skin, massaging gently until water droplets develop on the surface. Gently pat until fully absorbed. This product can also be used as a lightweight daily moisturiser, or (for more intensive results) applied overnight to deliver sustained moisture while your cells are at their most receptive. For heavy night time moisturisers giving maximum repair try Aloe Vera moisturizing 24 hour cream by Strella priced at just £8.50 A revolutionary treatment this 24 hour hydration facial combines the beneficial properties of Aloe Vera with Vitamin E to visibly restore youth to the skin. The product brilliantly smooths the skin, removes fine lines, skin appears younger and full of vitality using the rich in nutrients found within Aloe Vera. www.strellaskincare-fragrance. com. Another evening alternative we adore is Bodhi & Birch Neroli Lucé Revitalising Facial Oil, infused with an aromatic blend of skin-toning Tunisian Neroli, rejuvenating Frankincense and restorative Sea Buckthorn oil your skin will be left feeling soft and supple - £32.00. Alternatively try Chanel’s Hydra Beauty Micro Serum. Women who are looking for both intense hydration and advanced antioxidant protection will find the perfect solution in HYDRA BEAUTY SÉRUM. Suitable for all skin types. £59.00

For daytime care try using Urea Hydration moisturising cream also available by Strella. Available in 50ml at £9.58 this product is especially formulated for 360 absolute care helping to restore dry, sore or chapped areas. With rapid absorption the product provides prolonged hydration and reduces significantly the unevenness caused by dryness eliminating roughness. For all over body care, Strella’s Urea range also includes a 500ml moisturizing body milk which is brilliant for top to toe all over care. Priced at £5.75 this milk should be used liberally and frequently to provide your skin that all over protection.

Editors tip: Add a touch of colour Add some pizazz to grey surroundings with some subtle hues. We love the light glow NEW Limited edition Burberry Runway Blush Palette (£45.00), brush lightly over the cheek bones and forehead for a health glow on your hydrated skin. The brand new Posietint by Benefit Cosmetics £24.50, is a sheer poppy-pink lip & cheek stain gives you the perfect pop of natural colour. Make sure you keep your nails and lips understated with pastel tones. We love the Benefit lip stain as previously mentioned and Chanel Rouge allure 154 for lips which gives a gentle glow. For nails try Burberry’s Aqua Green £15. Love the cold weathers, keep warm and beautiful ensuring your skin is hydrated and glowing.

of Attorney? What is a Lasting Power They are the documents in which you nominate who will make your Medical and Financial decisions for you if you lose mental capacity.

Having LPAs prepared is simple, easy, and you make your own decisions.

We all assume that if we lose capacity our close family members will make decisions for us. Right? Sadly… Wrong!!

• Do you have other financial assets?

If you do not have LPAs in place and lose capacity your family cannot handle your finances, sell your property or make medical decisions without applying to the Court of Protection for authority. This process can take nearly a year and cost up to several thousand pounds in fees.

Buy Bosch at Webbs Bosch has been at the forefront of kitchen appliance manufacturing for over 125 years. Their appliances are renowned for their quality, reliability and performance. As you would expect from German engineering, there are no gimmicks or frills, just pure clean lines and beautiful functional simplicity that will enhance any kitchen. Bosch has won the prestigious Best Home Appliances Brand from Which? for a momentous 5th time, including the last 4 years in a row! At Webbs we like to sell Bosch appliances, they look good, work well and they last. It is true that there’s a small premium over budget brands but we believe it’s a price well worth paying.

56

Store manager Mark Tranter says: “Bosch recognise that people all have different priorities and so they make three different ranges to suit all tastes and pockets. The Classix range is their practical range of entry level products, still with Bosch build quality and sensible features. The Exxcel range with more features and high performance, and the Logixx range with cutting edge design and advanced technology.

they very energy efficient but heat up really quickly. They seem to boil a pan of water in the blink of an eye. We also have on display, chimney hoods and warming drawers, both of which seem very hard to see in the flesh.

Overall Bosch are our best selling appliances we do really well with all of the built-in products from the cooking ranges of ovens, hobs and hoods to the laundry ranges of washers and dishwashers.

A huge strength we have here at Webbs is our Installation team. Led by Gary, a trained electrician and kitchen fitter, we can install all the products we sell, including adapting the units to make new or upgraded products fit. We offer an inspection service where we can come into your home prior to purchase to help and advise on the correct products to fit your needs. This is all very important as built-in can be a bit of a mind field.

All of the staff at Webbs attended Bosch training courses at their head office. We know the products inside out. Our customers can not only see a large range of products but get hands on as many are connected up ready for demonstration. We can demonstrate the benefits of the new induction hobs. Not only are

Bosch products are very clever and need proper explanation and demonstration. We can do that at Webbs. We take proper care to make sure every customer gets the right product for them. We can deliver quickly, often the same day, and professionally install it and remove the old one. No fuss no hassle.”

portunity to p o e th n e iv g ls o o h sc Local play areas m iu d a st n o s n g si e d view Cannock Chase Council and winning contractor Wicksteed Playgrounds have visited local schools, to seek views and comments from the children on the proposed designs of the play areas planned within the Stadium site. Phase one of the project is to deliver two new play areas for toddlers and juniors, a multi-use games area, an adventure play area, a mountain bike trail, illuminated pathways and cycle trails, car parking, community allotments and the provision of trim trail exercise equipment. The design of the play areas incorporates the mining history of the area and the previous history of the athletics track. Councillor Christine Mitchell, Portfolio Leader for Culture and Sport said “I am excited that phase one of the project has started, it provides a variety of activities that will benefit the whole community both young and old. It was a pleasure to visit the schools and I am delighted that the children have been able to see the design for which we received really positive comments.”

£0.8M investment into Cannock Chase District The Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnerships have agreed to an expansion to its growth deal which will see a £0.8m investment into the Cannock Chase area. The investment works approved for Kingswood Lakeside will include; gap funding to support remediation works, access, lighting and drainage works for a prime employment location adjacent to the M6 toll and will create 610 jobs. This is the second project to be awarded funding in the District; in July 2014 £1.3M was received for Pentalver Cannock Ltd. Councillor George Adamson, Leader of the Council said “We 58

welcome the funding we will be receiving from the Greater Birmingham and Solihull LEP. The additional investment will open up Kingswood Lakeside even further and provide a great boost for the local economy. We look forward to working with our partners in the LEP on this project.” The funding is part of The Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership growth deal expansion with the Government which will see an extra £21.4m invested in the Greater Birmingham and Solihull area between 2016 and 2021, on top of the £357.4M investment agreed in July 2014.

The design master plan for the site was approved by Cabinet in July 2014 in a two phased approach for delivery. The estimated capital cost for phase one is £1,382,000 which is to be met from the Stadium Development Fund, which includes a contribution of £527,000 from ASDA. Black NoneBymRoob re Taylor There’s a kind of magic to this Honda Civic Black Edition. Some might say Black Magic but I won’t; preferring instead to leave all attendant dark arts allusion aside and sit safely beside the fireside, eating Nestle’s most coveted confectionary and listening to Queen, while ruminating upon Honda’s newest take on its most popular model. However, there’s still something of the night about this most stylish and individualistic Civic; not since the Batmobile has there been such devout stylistic adherence to monochrome. Crystal Black Pearlescent paint coats every inch of its enhanced bodywork, which boasts glossy front and side skirts, a black fuel lid cover, rear bumper garnish and spoiler. Gunpowder black 17” alloys complete the look. This car demands attention as it cuts a swath through today’s roadscape of dreary grey mobile metal boxes.

60

And it does it all without in anyway compromising the very reason why Civics have always sold so well: they are thoroughly well-engineered and well-made cars. In a world where flashy gimmicks seduce only the idiotic, Honda’s cornerstones of reliability, practicality and individuality are more essential and appealing now than ever and this ninth-gen iteration demonstrates this beautifully. Its blackness, of course, is just a veneer; a super-cool cachet that indicates a leaning towards the dark side without ever betraying its noble underpinnings. For despite all this attention grabbing visual stimuli the devil’s still in the detail: a litany of safety, comfort and convenience features which include Bluetooth hands-free, Climate Control, Hill Start Assist, Guide Me Home Headlights to name but a few. They all make you sit up and take notice. And I haven’t got to the best bit yet: the Magic Seats. In a fantastically simple yet brilliant piece of engineering Honda has come up with rear seats that can flip-up, cinema-style, to help accommodate larger loads when bootspace is insufficient. But - wait - before you turf out your backseat passengers and deploy them, check again in the boot because all is not what it seems. A secret luggage

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MARCH/APRIL 2015

repository hides beneath a false-floor, where the spare tyre used to live. I told you it was magic. This car can also completely disappear if you park it out in the country late at night, but that’s something else entirely. There’s also under the bonnet one of the best all-round diesel engines I’ve driven in quite some time: the 120 bhp 1.6 litre I-DTEC, which is capable of 78.5 mpg (I averaged 60.2 mpg) and running all the way up to 129 mph. It is very refined and torquey for its size and makes the Civic a competent cruiser on long motorway journeys; it’s equally at home in the city with comfy ride and responsive steering. It may be black but low emissions of 94 g/km of Co2 make it popular with people who like to be green and a price of just £22,460 is more than enough to keep buyers keen. Moreover there’s build quality that is second-to-none, famed reliability and a robustness to the interior which is reassuring, as well as pleasant to use. Not to mention a quirkiness of styling and design that is faintly left-field and just about defiantly iconoclastic enough to make you feel special and not one of the herd. Drive this brilliant little hatchback and I guarantee it’ll put a spell on you.

s better g le o tw , d o o g s g le r Fou By Rob Taylor To not be firing on all cylinders is an idiom that has obvious etymology in internal combustion. All ensuing metaphorical use is firmly focussed upon underscoring any given person or things’ inability to work at optimum performance. Indeed you might even say - as my editor did that I now embody said expression of underperformance by choosing this very opening to my roadtest for the brand new Seat Leon or, for the sake of pedants everywhere: Seat Leon SC FR 1.4 TSI ACT 150PS. But, please, do bear with me. The car made me do it. Now let me explain: I know this defence is probably unfamiliar to you unless you have very young children, but it’s perfectly valid in the case of this third generation Leon because of its cylinder shutdown system, Active Cylinder Technology (ACT), which sees this four-pot run on just two cylinders whenever opportunity presents. This car is a rule breaker that is hell-bent on challenging the status quo and leaving truisms lying in its wake. Obviously there is good, sound reasoning behind this: fuel savings and emissions reduction to name but two. This is borne out in the stats:

62

54.3 mpg and 119 g/km Co2 in a car that can hit 60 mph in 8.1 seconds, before topping out at 131 mph. These numbers were unthinkable when I first started driving some 15 years ago - just five years ago it was stretching things. Today such a harmonious marriage of parsimony and power is intoxicating. So too is the way this thing looks.

automatically applying the brakes; Tiredness Recognition, which quite literally analyses drivers to detect tiredness; Lane Assist, which applies a small amount of torque to the steering wheel to encourage corrective steering action when drifting out of lane; XDS, electronic limited slip differential, and an omniscient Optical Park System.

Flanked with optional full-LED lights, the Leon’s arrow-head prow and sexy coupe lines (you can have this Leon as a regular hatch or estate ST as well) not only spear swiftly through time and space, but they fire Cupid’s bow straight at your heart. Or it does in my case anyway. Whether or not that had to do with it being delivered to me in mid-February is anyone’s guess.

The Leon in FR spec is chock full of as-standard lovelies like 17-inch alloy wheels, LED tail lights, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, tinted rear windows, electric folding mirrors, an eight-speaker stereo and front sports seats. The cabin has a distinctive sporting bent and feels incredibly well built. The infotainment systems are user-friendly and intuitively designed. What’s more the seats are supportive and comfortable over long distance, as is the ride. Limitations of grip will seldom be found in normal conditions and there’s real fun to be had behind the wheel, as the driver-focus of the Formula Racing (FR) badge really comes to the fore when things get twisty.

Sitting on a slightly shorter wheelbase than the hatch, the SC loses very little in the way of practically to its five-door brother: bootspace is the same at 380 litres and reduced head and legroom is negligible. And did I mention how good it looks? What’s far less subjective however is the level of kit on offer for your £19,265. And what’s most impressive among the copious cavalcade of features is the clever stuff designed to keep you safe: as well as the prognosticating headlights there’s Multi-Collision Brake, which prevents further collisions in the aftermath of an accident by

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MARCH/APRIL 2015

Make no mistake this car can really perform at its zenith, but whenever modern driving conditions mitigate this the Leon will kick back and chill out to save you money. It’s the car for every occasion.

creating a more muscular stance. The ‘wing’ graphic design features when the rear lights are switched on. There’s also a large pallet of 15 exterior colours. New for this model are Summit White and Limelight Green, and metallics Shiny Rock, Emerald Green, Darksea Blue and Peppermint Green. While the basic dimensions of the New Corsa’s cabin remain largely the same, almost everything that sits in it has been re-designed.

Still one the UK’s top-selling and best-loved cars, the current model continues to garner affection from its owners thanks to its perfect combination of compact exterior dimensions and clever use of cabin space – major considerations when the new car was conceived. As a result, the new, Fourth-Generation Corsa is near-identical in length to the current model and retains its enviable space utilisation for occupants. But almost every other element of its design and engineering has changed, significantly improving the car’s driveability, efficiency, connectivity and overall ownership experience. All of the car’s body panels are new, and provide greater definition between the ‘sporty’ look of the three-door and the ‘premium’ five-door models. For the first time on a Corsa the car’s striking profile has been overlaid with Brit Mark Adams’ sculptural design, including elements such as the ‘blade’ running across the lower door-sections. Almost every element of the Corsa’s generous cabin is completely new, including a completely re-designed instrument panel and dashboard, and greatly improved levels of functionality, highlighted by Vauxhall’s sophisticated IntelliLink system – its first use in a high-volume application.

‘That also goes for the interior with its high-quality materials, excellent craftsmanship and leading-edge infotainment. It targets customers who do not invest a fortune in a car but demand quality at the highest level.’ From the front, the Corsa is immediately recognisable as the latest addition to the Vauxhall range. The bold face is clearly recognisable thanks to its ‘eagle eye’-shaped headlights, incorporating Vauxhall’s signature ‘wing’ LED daytime running lights and the low sporty trapezoidal grille, with a chrome bar supporting the Vauxhall Griffin. The front fog lights are embedded in two low, outward laying air inlets with chrome trim that make the car appear wider and lower. The side view of the three- and five-door bodies is very different. In the three-door model, the upper window line drops to the rear which makes the car look coupe-like. In the five-door variant, the belt line extends upwards creating a dynamic connection with the roof spoiler. The sculptured body sides feature Vauxhall’s flowing ‘blade’ signature. The rear view of the Corsa is also completely new. Wide horizontal split tail lights help widen the car and flow through to the rear shoulders

‘The new Corsa interprets our design philosophy perfectly,’ said Mark Adams, Vice President Design for Vauxhall/Opel. ‘The smoothly sculpted body, taught dynamic lines, including our signature “blade” body side and the sophisticated surfacing make the Corsa a sporty-looking small car with an elegant design. 64

High quality materials – like those used for the soft IP top-pad, or the decor elements dressed in rich satin chrome, are all worthy of vehicles from much higher segments. New Corsa’s interior also introduces an industryfirst seat fabric printing technology. A new driver control centre takes pride of place within the newly-designed instrument panel, which is themed around horizontal lines. There’s also a re-designed steering wheel that’s more ergonomic than before along with switches and chrono-styled instruments that are all finished in chrome. The interior is practical too with the front doors featuring a compartment large enough for a 1.5-litre bottle as well as three cup holders in the centre console. There’s also a flexible cup holder located in front of the gear lever. Corsa is the first high-volume Vauxhall to be available with IntelliLink, the innovative communications system which has already been seen in the ADAM model. The state-of-the-art IntelliLink infotainment system is fully customisable, and designed with ease of use in mind. The system is surrounded by high gloss décor, with supporting switches accented in satin chrome. Why not come and see the New Fourth Generation Corsa at Brindley Vauxhall, Cannock.
