utlook O e ir sh rd o ff ta S y a d Happy 3rd Birth Here at the Staffordshire Outlook we have celebrated our 3rd anniversary! We are very grateful to all of the clients who continue to advertise their business, and to the readers for contributing to the Staffordshire Outlook magazine’s popularity and success. When we launched in April 2012, we wanted to deliver the kind of magazine that the Staffordshire area was missing, this being a local, high quality, free magazine, super serving the area. The content that you, the readers have got involved in is phenomenal and we always feature great local stories and events in the area. Sales Director Sharon Caldwell says “I cannot believe how the last three years has flown by. I didn’t think when I started the magazine that it would be as successful as it has been to date. I have such great feedback from the readers of the magazine, and they comment on how local the content of the magazine is
This was my main objective when I started the Staffordshire Outlook. I am extremely grateful to all of the companies for advertising their businesses in the Staffordshire Outlook magazine. The comments I receive every month off my clients is fantastic, and it makes me so proud that the Staffordshire Outlook is bringing new customers
“Since I started advertising La Minky & Salon La Mink in the Staffordshire Outlook in July 2013, the response and new customers that the magazine has brought me has been tremendous. I have used other publications in the past; however the Staffordshire Outlook is the one that has delivered the best results by far! I will continue to advertise in this great magazine for the foreseeable future, as every month Sharon comes to see me and we change the offers to keep my advertising fresh and up to date with the seasons. If you are looking for a magazine that gets results, I would recommend the Staffordshire Outlook, it has worked for us and I am sure it can work for you! Happy 3rd Birthday Staffordshire Outlook and I hope you have many more.” June Laing – La Minky &Salon La Mink
and increasing their profit. I want to thank you, the readers of the magazine and hopefully you will continue to support the Staffordshire Outlook.” Please see below a few client testimonials who are advertising their business in the magazine with great results.
Our customers always when coming to us from the Staffordshire Outlook magazine say where they found us from, each time the publication comes out from print and goes to door, I can tell the increased footfall and telephone conversations multiply, thanks to everything that you do, and congratulations on the Magazine’s 3rd birthday” Simon Edwards – Ralvern Ltd “Tech Alum Systems Ltd would like to say a big thank you to Sharon at the Staffordshire Outlook for her efforts in helping us put our adverts together. We have advertised in the magazine for the past 7 months and have found the response excellent. Our main objective has been to raise our profile in the Staffordshire area, and the Staffordshire Outlook magazine has certainly done this for us! A great local magazine packed with useful information.
“Here at Ralvern Ltd have been extremely pleased and very gratefully surprised at the localised advertising done in the Staffordshire Outlook Magazine. We have been advertising since 2013, and we go into every edition. Every time our advert is out in the areas that the Magazine covers we have numerous enquiries, with sales that out perform any other type of advertising that we do, our partnership that we have built up within the publication is simply fantastic.

under new MD ir o ch ty e ci so l ra o ch Chase The choir was first formed in 1981 when MD Mr Derek Bailey joined a male and female choir together, and that was the start of a very successful choir, who are well known in the Cannock Chase Area. They invited choirs from Amercia, Germany and Wales to sing with them at local churches and have always welcomed local school choirs to sing at their concerts.
After many successful years Mr Bailey retired last November. The 34 members of the mixed voice choir are now enjoying the choir’s continuation under new MD Mr George Hardy, who has a new approach and a different variation of music. The choir’s new rehearsal venue is at St Aidan’s Church Hall on Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm. We welcome any female/male who would like to try choir singing, music from shows and modern day music. Ages from 14 to 100 years young are welcome. Also a position is vacant for anybody who would like to train as a Deputy Conductor/MD. The next Concert is at St Mark’s Church in Great Wryley on the 5th July at 7.30pm, with guests The Cannock Ex Servicemen’s Male Voice Choir. The Choir is available for to perform at Church events, Weddings, Funerals and any other social occasions. For all enquiries please contact Secretary, Judy 01543 270690.

County Show e ir sh rd o ff ta S to et ck ti Win a family The UK’s number one motorcycle display team will be revving up the crowds with their death defying stunts at this year’s Staffordshire County Show. The Bolddog Lings FMX Team, which reached the finals of Britain’s Got Talent and have appeared on Top Gear, will attract thousands of people to the main ring at the Staffordshire County Showground on May 27 and 28. More than 60,000 people are expected to flood through the showground gates during the two day show on Weston Road in Stafford during the half term holiday event. Bolddog Lings team boasts the world’s largest and most sophisticated mobile landing system in their performance which includes the UK’s top ranked freestyle motocross riders.
and offers something for everyone from children to great-grandparents and everyone in between.” Bolddog Lings Team Manager, Dan Whitby, said: “We are very much looking forward to returning to Staffordshire County Show. “Our show is more than just freestyle. It’s a nonstop show that will entertain everyone from off–road enthusiasts to the general public. “It’s a must see part of any festival and is continually growing in popularity as the awareness of freestyle motocross increases.” Other attractions includes an extensive food hall and cookery theatre, Woodfest for the children, a vintage machinery parade, Young Farmer’s floats, along with the country pursuits area with falconry, sheep show, sheepdog and duck display and horse shoeing. Youngsters can also enjoy the donkey rides and animal experience.
Richard Williams, chief executive of Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society which organises the two day show, said: “We are very excited to welcome Bolddog Lings back to our showground. “The crowds loved them when they performed two years ago and the riders themselves were eager to return which is fantastic for the thousands of people the show pulls in every year. “The level of entertainment the Bolddog Lings team offer is second to none and the information and excitement they provide between performances is also an added bonus. “The interactive stand where motorcycle fans can take a closer look at the bikes and meet the riders is really quite special. “The stunt show is a spectacular within itself and just shows Staffordshire County Show once again offers many shows within a show 26

your tiles
Cleaning and maintenance of wall and floor tiles is essential in keeping high standards of hygiene throughout the home or workplace. Tiles are easily maintained if you follow just a few simple procedures in their cleaning and maintenance. This is especially important in the kitchen, where tiles are exposed to greases and spillages which could effectively damage the finish of the tile if not dealt with accordingly. Tile Choice stocks a range of cleaning products to suit everyday cleaning to the most demanding of situations. As you may be aware some wall and floor tiles need more maintenance than others, if you have got natural stone tiles they will need to be treated with sealers which will then protect the tiles from any potential stains as these tiles are very absorbent. Glazed porcelain tiles will also need to be sealed as the surface of the tile is also absorbent to stains. If the tiles are left untreated, further down the line you will see that the surface will turn black where the dirt has been absorbed in to the tiles making it hard to clean them back to its original condition. Where as ceramic tiles do not need any protective treatment once they are laid,
28
the only maintenance they need is cleaning them from time to time.
The top 3 point in tile maintenance are as follows:
Sealing Before sealing takes place the area should be inspected for adhesive residues and general dirt deposits. The areas must be perfectly clean and dry before applying sealant as any dirt or other deposits may interfere with the sealing process and become more permanent. It is recommended that all areas that require sealing are cleaned. There are a few different products that will protect stone. Each has its own characteristics and has been designed to give a required finish or to be used with a specific stone.
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY/JUNE 2015
Grouting For all natural stone, Granfix Floor Tile Grout is recommended. Flexible admixtures should be used in the correct proportions where appropriate. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, remembering that polished finishes can be scratched by hard or abrasive objects. The grout should be applied over the whole area ensuring that the joints are completely filled. Remove excess grout with a damp sponge, making sure that it is rinsed out frequently with clean water.
Maintenance Products are available to keep natural stone looking at its best. Many of the products are used for more than one type of stone; however, it is important to use the right product that applies to your material.

lace in Charity Fete to take p .I.D. Cannock for Dog A Anita & Larry with assistance dogs George & Freddie
A couple are organising a charity fete in Cannock taking place from 11am4pm on Saturday 16th May 2015 at the Avon Business & Leisure Centre. All proceeds will go to Dog A.I.D. who help people with disabilities train their own pet dog to assistance dog level. Anita (62) and Larry (63) Castellina from Lancashire are both disabled. With the help of Dog A.I.D., Anita has fully qualified assistance dog George and Larry is currently in training with Freddie. Thanks to her work with Avon Business & Leisure, who celebrate their 10th anniversary in 2015, Dog A.I.D. has been chosen as charity of the year.
Both Anita and Larry are very aware of the difference assistance dogs make to the lives of people with disabilities. George will get the post, pick up any dropped items, get Larry when Anita needs him, take off socks and shoes plus so many more tasks able-bodied people take for granted. Although Freddie’s training is ongoing with Dog A.I.D., he can already dry the wet room floor, fetch Larry’s medication, empty the washing machine and is learning to alert him if there are people or vehicles nearby when he is on his scooter due to his lack of hearing.
Visitors to the fete will be able to browse craft stalls and the car boot sale, buy cakes and hot meals, see Tai Chi and ballet demonstrations plus much more. There will also be a Fun Dog Show judged by Sandra Fraser of Dog A.I.D. with eight different categories including Best of Show. 30
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY/JUNE 2015
Anita comments, “Dog A.I.D. means so much to us and we want to be able to give something back to them by organising this fete. It will be a fantastic day out for people from the local community, so do come and support us. It is especially poignant for me that Avon & Business Leisure will be supporting Dog A.I.D. this year to celebrate ten years since the centre was built in Cannock.” Dog A.I.D. was established in the 1990’s and there are currently 47 fully qualified dogs throughout the country plus another 30 in various stages of training. Training takes from 18 months to two years with both dog and owner receiving specialist education from a network of trainers based around the country. The dog owner is given all the tools required to constantly reinforce training methods learnt and also continue to teach their dog new commands and tasks independently. Admission to the fete is free. Car boot pitches are available for £15 with indoor single tables at £20 and double at £35, please call 01543 503163 to book. For further information on Dog A.I.D. please visit www.dogaid.org.uk.

Recipe of the month
Serves 4 people
Meatball Pasta INTRO
METHOD
These delicious homemade meatballs are flavoured with olives and basil then cooked in a rich and lightly spiced tomato sauce. Serve with spaghetti for a lassic Italian supper or for a change pile on top of boiled rice or steamed couscous.
• Place the minced beef or lamb, olives, basil and half the chopped onion and crushed garlic in a food processor. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process until the mixture is almost smooth. Shape into about 28 small meatballs and chill for 30 minutes.
INGREDIENTS • 400g (14oz) minced beef or lamb • 1 tbsp pitted black olives, chopped • 2 tbsp fresh chopped basil • 1 red onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 1 tbsp olive oil • 500g carton passatta (sieved tomatoes) • 1-2 tsp harissa paste (see tip) • 1 tsp sugar • 400g (14oz) spaghetti • Fresh basil leaves, to garnish 36
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY/JUNE 2015
• Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and fry the meatballs for 3-4 mins until browned all over, stirring frequently. Remove the meatballs with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. • Add the rest of the onion and garlic to the pan and fry for 5 mins. Pour in the passatta and add the harissa paste and sugar. Bring to the boil. Add the meatballs and 150ml (1/4pt) water and simmer for 30 mins. • Cook the spaghetti in a large pan of salted water for 12-14 mins or according to the packet instructions. Drain well and divide between four serving plates. Season the meatball sauce to taste then spoon over the spaghetti. Serve garnished with basil leaves. TIP Harissa paste is a fiery blend of chillies and spices often used in North African cookery. Established in 1971, Padma Lounge Bar & Restaurant is a family run business originally founded by the Ali family. Padma Lounge was one of the first Indian restaurants in Cannock dating back to 1971 when they were situated in Walsall road. Having moved 4 years ago to their town centre location, Padma Lounge brings top quality, authentic Indian and Bangladeshi fine dining to Staffordshire.
before along with traditional dishes and they all sounded beautiful! Our waiter for the evening arrived to take our order and was very helpful with answering our questions on particular dishes. For starters we had poppadum’s with dips and the vegetable platter for 2 which included vegetable samosa, panir shashlick and onion bhajee. Our main courses were the Naga Murgi £7.95 (marinated chicken tikka in a hot and spicy naga Bengali chilli sauce and then cooked in a moist consistency with fresh garlic,
This evening my partner and I had booked a table at Padma Lounge after hearing so many good reviews, and we couldn’t wait to try their culinary delights. We arrived at Padma Lounge and parked on the car park adjacent to the restaurant which was free of charge after 18:30 hours. We were welcomed at the entrance by Tarak the owner who showed us to our table. We were given the menu to peruse and ordered two cobra beers whilst doing so. The food menu has lots of interesting dishes which we had not heard of 38

Once our order was taken we sat back and took in the surroundings. The décor in Padma is very clean, smart and contemporary with leather seats, shiny mahogany tables and perfect lighting, great for any occasion. We also commented
and once finished we couldn’t wait to try the main course. Shortly after, our mains were presented and they looked and tasted amazing. All of the dishes were fresh, beautifully presented and tasted divine! Once finished, our plates were taken and we were given the deserts menu, however we were too full and finished our brilliant evening with coffees.
on what a great idea the wireless call system is, where on each table you simply press a button when you wish to order more drinks, order food and even request your bill. We also noticed that Padma Lounge has recently been awarded a 5 star rating for food hygiene by the Staffordshire local authorities. Our starters arrived and were both delicious and full of flavour

it an authentic, natural look. It also allows the scalp to be able to ‘breath’, since it is not obstructed by heavy weaves or other bulky types of hair extensions. Whether you are looking for length, volume or colour the micro bond extensions could be for you. Stacey had shoulder length fine hair, the micro bond hair extensions have given her length and thickness.
The process involves taking a few fine strands of extension hair to create one extension and then attaching it by applying a tiny bead of liquid resin to the tip of the extension and fusing it to the natural hair. The resin is gently rolled to form a hard, cylindrical micro bond or ‘seal’. Please note, that this is NOT glue, but a specially formulated polymer bonding resin specifically developed for hair extensions, and is extremely safe, non-toxic and 100% non-damaging to the natural hair.

2015 Aesthetic treatments in
was that, according to the report, 41% of girls aged seven to 10 and 63% aged 11 to 16 said they felt some pressure to look the way celebrities do. The review wants tougher controls over “highly misleading” advertising and marketing practices, warning that “before and after” pictures can be digitally enhanced. This places a burden on the shoulders of all Aesthetic Practitioners to act responsibly and ethically, which I am sure we all agree is essential.
Health and beautification rituals are being taken much more seriously and many people now seek professional treatments to help them look their best. This concentration on our appearance is hardly anything new as the beauty industry has been expanding and growing since recorded history began. There appears to be two fairly distinct approaches to Aesthetics/Beauty; to change how one looks, or to maintain ones features for longevity. The former can result is some very radical changes in an effort to reach the desired result. The latter is a more measured way of preserving looks whilst ageing gracefully. Neither is the ‘right approach’ every individual has the right to choose which is appropriate for them. People may be unhappy with aspects of their appearance but not ready to opt for a more invasive cosmetic treatment, a vast array of treatment options exists to help them put their best face forward. With an undeniable pressure to look better and younger for longer, there is no surprise that more and more people continue to embrace aesthetic treatments for personal improvement. Their motivation may be a job promotion, to appear their best on social media websites or merely to feel more confident. Programmes such as ‘Ten Years Younger’ have alerted people to what is achievable and also added credibility and made treatments more socially acceptable. 44
Society is now becoming more tolerant of people choosing to undertake not only cosmetic surgery but also non - invasive aesthetic treatments. These treatments can be administered by Doctors, Nurses and other suitably qualified therapists. There are over 4,000 nurses who administer aesthetic treatments. To ensure that the highest standards are maintained to protect clients the Keogh Report (2013) looked into cosmetic treatments (in particular Botox and Fillers) to regulate their administration and ensure better procedures and thus safety. One interesting fact to emerge
The improvements in equipment, knowledge and standards over the last few years have all contributed to the world of Aesthetic treatments becoming a safer place to visit. The Chase CACI Clinic is firmly committed to providing the highest level of care and standards of treatment using the very latest technology and knowledge allied with the finest products. This commitment, in conjunction with the personalised treatment plan which each client discusses with their practitioner combine to ensure positive outcomes.

SI Cannock & distric The last speaker meeting of their SI Cannock & District’s Diamond Anniversary year was held on St Patrick’s Day and members wore something green in recognition of that. At the meeting they celebrated the work they have done during the year to support Staffordshire Women’s Aid and the Pathway Project by inviting representatives of each organisation to update members and guests on the work they are doing and to present cheques from the monies raised during the year. Dickie James, CEO of Staffordshire Women’s Aid said that they work closely with Pathway, particularly in providing services for women and children in the Cannock area who need their support and that she was very aware of the synergy between themselves and Soroptimists – they, too, work as a sisterhood to empower women, to educate them and to enable them to achieve in this world. As a charity they will be celebrating their 40th anniversary next year: the Refuge in Stafford which opened in 1976 was one of the first in the country and they have worked in the Cannock area for 12 years. They have an outreach centre based in Cannock and provide varied support to help women and children to access the support they need so that they can remain in their own homes or access refuge accommodation if they need it. Last year their support line took over 1,000 calls from Cannock women and 220 families in the area received help. Part of that help and support was working 1:1 in schools with children who live with abuse. Dickie told everyone that she would like to honour all those women who working in the 1970s to set up Refuges across the country; the UK now has a world leading network of refuges and outreach work. A frightening statistic is that still, 2 women in the UK die every week because of Domestic Violence. Staffordshire Women’s Aid has been and is currently working with local Councils to set up a new Refuge in the area which will include 12 self contained flats as well as indoor and outdoor play areas. If a refuge is the only option for 48
a woman who needs to flee domestic abuse then that is where she will be able to recover and rebuild her life. President Janis Lomas then introduced Tracy Rowley from the Pathway Project. Cannock Soroptimists have supported Pathway for the last 20 years by providing toiletries, goods to equip homes and, from time to time, funds. Tracy explained that she is new to Pathway, having worked with them since July of last year. She said that she loves being part of a friendly and dedicated team, but also that she has found some circumstances women endure quite shocking, even scary. On behalf of Kathy Coe, Pathway’s Director, she thanked Soroptimists for the support they give to the project, saying that the gifts of comfort bags are always so much appreciated by the women who enter the refuge as they always go to them with nothing other than the clothes they are wearing at the time, so being able to give them a bag of toiletries and other necessities is so important. Tracey also told the meeting that they are the subject of a Documentary to be aired on BBC3 on Wednesday 25th March at 9.00pm. Although fund raising wasn’t a major focus for the Diamond Anniversary year, SI Cannock raised £1500 which was divided between the two organisations. Both Dickie and Tracy were thrilled to receive the cheques, which they hadn’t known about beforehand.
Staffordshire Women’s Aid will use the money towards furnishing their new Refuge and Pathway will use theirs on some much needed new equipment for their youth club which runs each week and provides young people whose lives have been difficult with an opportunity to make new friends and to have some time to be children again. Amanda Milling was amongst the guests at the meeting having joined with Soroptimists to collect items for both Pathway and Staffordshire Women’s Aid after the V Festival last year. She told President Janis, Dickie and Tracy how much she admired the work done by all three organisations, particularly as they are all supporting local women at times of great stress and vulnerability; she told them of her intention to continue to support them all in whatever way she can. President Janis thanked everyone for supporting the Diamond Anniversary focus of Women suffering Domestic Violence. Carver Wolverhampton marathon events The 2015 Carver marathon events, scheduled to take place on SUNDAY 6th SEPTEMBER in West park, were launched on 2nd February. The organisers have already started to assemble and their first task was to select the charities who are to benefit, from this, the 18th year of the running of the events. The charities selected are Compton Hospice, Samaritans Wolverhampton and Beacon Centre for the Blind. The Mayoral charities will again also benefit. We are hoping to raise lots of money again this year, and we are sure we will benefit from participation by the supporters of the charities. Chair, Mary Harding, is pleased to announce that major sponsors Carvers, Marston’s and Cousins Furniture have all agreed to sponsor again. In addition the organisers have decided to add a 3K walk in the park to the events. Kindly sponsored by Call Print, the marathon printing provider, Mary hopes that this will encourage further family participation. We are also delighted that another local company, “Angel Springs”, have agreed to sponsor the provision
of bottled water again this year, and NJB Sport & Physio based in Codsall are again sponsoring the medical provision as well as offering massage and physiotherapy services on race weekend. Greenhous based in Wednesfield are sponsoring the van hire for the course signage team to set out the course and all the important signage around the course. There will again be a children’s mini marathon in the park, so that there will be an opportunity for everyone to participate. The organisers are always requiring help with water stations or marshalling. Anyone wishing to help please contact Carvers or put a message on the website. This event is wonderful for the City of Wolverhampton. It brings a great atmosphere to the park. Please come along on September 6th to be a part of it. An entry form for all the events is on the Website www.carverwolverhamptonmarathonevents.co.uk

ry Risk! ju In r u o Y e c u d e R … rs Runne (Lopes et al 2012). Most of these issues are cumulative onset injuries caused by training errors and can be avoided with the correct advice.
Running is one of the most accessible forms of fitness training to ensure you attain an adequate amount of exercise each week. In fact if you run regularly then your relative risk of death can decrease by up to 63%. Exercise is medicine! However there is also a risk of injury from running and each year between 30-80% of runners suffer injury from running (Van Gent et al 2007). This statistic hasn’t significantly reduced in over 30 years! The biggest risk factor for recurrent injury is previous injury (Saragiotto et al 2014). The 5 most frequently reported injuries in runners are Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (aka shin splints), Achilles & Patella Tendonopathy, Plantar Heel Pain (aka Plantar Faciitis), Ankle Sprain and ITB Syndrome
If we progressively adapt our tissues to the loads encountered when running then we get stronger and faster rather than becoming injured. It’s a question of balancing appropriate training load with adequate recovery! We can optimise this response to training through being aware of some important information 1. Warm up – Progressively prepare your body for running with dynamic movement such as light jog, walking lunges, hopping, knee lifts 2 DON’T statically stretch before running– research suggests you will impair performance and increased your injury risk (Shrier et al 2004). 3. Take shorter, lighter, quicker steps – Most runners run with reduced cadence (typically around
160 foot strikes per minute). Try aiming for 3 foot strikes per second (Schubert et al 2014) 4. Train often – Running 4-5 times per week for shorter distances achieves better adaptation especially for the beginner. Progress training volume by approximately 10% per week. 5. Recover - Sleep, Diet, Hydration are all important aspects of recovery which optimise adaptation to training. Consider following the basic advice outlined above and you will already be well on your way to better running with a reduced injury risk. Active Therapy is a specialist running clinic and provides treatment, rehabilitation, gait analysis and shoe selection advice for runners of all standards.

o Family tickets to be w Family tickets to be won to visit new “Land Of The Living Dinosaurs” at West Midland Safari Park. One of the most dramatic walkthrough Dinosaur exhibits in the UK is now open at West Midland Safari Park and we have 5 FAMILY TICKETS TO GIVE AWAY. “Land of the Living Dinosaurs” is the very latest exhibit to open at the Park and is one of the most adventurous. Costing £2.5m, the immersive walking trail features 38 life size animatronic dinosaurs, each with moving eyes, mouth and neck. From the first moment of glimpsing the skeleton of a mighty T-Rex at the entrance, the scene
is set for an extraordinary journey through the reign of the dinosaur. It plays with the senses and really does give the feeling of walking amongst live beasts that roamed the Earth millions of years ago. There’s the chance to meet some of the most formidable creatures that made history including the curious Dilophosaurus, fearsome Gorgonops and two of the biggest towering 8 metres tall, the Apatosaurus at 25 metres long and Argentinosaurus, even longer at 30 metres. A life size adult Tyrannosaurus Rex elevated on 4m rockwork casts a dramatic shadow, whilst the impressive Sarcosuchus, meaning ‘flesh crocodile’ represents one of the largest crocodile-like creatures that is thought to have ever lived. Sound effects indicative of the lost world add atmosphere, whilst static fossil displays, exotic planting, a volcanic vent, three pools and geyser intensifies the whole experience. As well as visiting this brand new exhibit there are discoveries of the animal variety around every corner, too. four in five (82 per cent) of the Nuffield Health surgeons saying they have noticed a rise in men seeking cosmetic surgery in the form of nose jobs, eyelid lifts and ‘man boob’ removal. Almost all surgeons (95 per cent) also reported a rise in the number of previously overweight or obese patients looking for surgery following weight loss. The Nuffield Health plastic surgeons believe the reasons behind the trend among the ‘baby boomer’ generation to be a direct result of people living longer, healthier lives and wanting to ‘look well’ too. For men, surgery has increasingly become ‘the norm’ in recent years, and the trend looks set to stay, with men accounting for one in ten of all UK cosmetic procedures.* Mr Darren Lewis, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital said: “We’ve seen a definite increase in cosmetic surgery for men over the last few years. 10 – 15 years ago cosmetic surgery for men was less common, now about one in ten procedures we do are on men. It has become much more socially acceptable and there has been a big change in the way men view health and fitness in recent years, with the media, consumer magazines and celebrities all having played a role. As well as keeping fit and active, we are seeing men place much more emphasis on looking well too.” Mr Darren Lewis
The over 65s and men are leading a surge in cosmetic surgery in Wolverhampton. This trend is mirrored across the UK, as Nuffield Health’s first annual Plastic Surgery insight survey reveals emerging trends in the market.
Almost two thirds (64 per cent) of Nuffield Health surgeons, who between them carry out 1 in 10 cosmetic procedures in the UK, reported an increase in older people seeking surgery. Nuffield Health’s patient figures paint the same picture, with patients over 65 up by 49% in 2014 from 2007. Men are also continuing to drive the cosmetic surgery market, with

These new groups of customers join the traditional customer set, such as mums wishing to restore their pre pregnancy bodies, women in their 20s seeking breast augmentation and women in their fifties asking for face lifts. Many surgeons (95 per cent) have also noted an increase in people looking for surgery after weight loss as the procedure is increasingly difficult to get on the NHS. 82 per cent of the surgeons said that they are seeing uplift across all customer types as people
are starting to feel the benefits of coming out of a recession. Despite this, figures released last week by the plastic surgery body - BAAPS – reveal a slight decline overall for UK cosmetic surgery procedures. While some surgeons confessed to having been asked for penis extensions, ear lobe reductions, buttock implants and even a forked tongue, mostly patients are seeking a natural look. The plastic surgeons said they are seeing a definite move away from people looking to copy celebrities – for 75% of surgeons it was very rare to be asked to replicate a celebrity look – with people in favour of a natural looking result (100 per cent), something non-surgical (55 per cent) and to rejuvenate rather than enlarge (57 per cent). In terms of what motivates people to consider surgery, the research highlighted that the choice is not down to peer pressure, pressure from a partner, or the need to look good at work, but the desire to improve self-confidence - which 100% of
the surgeons agreed was a key motivator for most of their patients. The surgeons, based at 31 Nuffield Health hospitals across the UK were also asked to share their predictions for the future. The majority agreed that they would continue to see an increase in men (95 per cent) and older people (82 per cent) amongst their patients and most thought that plastic surgery would increasingly become the norm – indeed many view it as the norm already in most parts of the UK. Face transplants, light weight breast implants and mid face lifts (which lift the middle segment of the face) were highlighted as the new and innovative techniques that will become more commonplace over the coming years in the world of cosmetic or reconstructive surgery following accidents or injury. Mr Darren Lewis, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital said: “The pioneering areas are really in reconstructive surgery where Plastic Surgeons in the UK are really pushing boundaries, particularly in their
work with burns and major trauma. There are also incredible things happening with tissue engineering”. For further information please contact Louise Clarke on 01902 793259 or Louise. Clarke@nuffieldhealth.com

ndrome y S l e n n u T l a rs a T : p ti Tom’s Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is well-known, Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome not so? What is the tarsal tunnel? The tarsal tunnel is a space in the foot formed between bones and overlying fibrous tissue. Within the tarsal tunnel lies a nerve called the posterior tibial nerve. The tarsal tunnel is walled on one side by sturdy bones, and on the other by tough fibrous tissue. What is tarsal tunnel syndrome? Tarsal tunnel syndrome results when the posterior tibial nerve is compressed within the tarsal tunnel. This condition is very similar, in mechanism, to carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist. Both of these conditions result when a nerve is pinched within a confined space. The tarsal tunnel, as mentioned previously, has little room to give. When the space becomes tight, the tibial nerve is pinched. What are the symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome? When the posterior tibial nerve is compressed in the tarsal tunnel, patients commonly complain
of numbness over the bottom of the foot, as well as complaints of pain, burning, and tingling over the base of the foot and heel. Occasionally, tarsal tunnel syndrome is confused with plantar fasciitis, or heel spurs. What is the cause of tarsal tunnel syndrome? The cause of tarsal tunnel syndrome is unknown in most cases, but can be the result of fractures, bone spurs, ganglions and other benign tumors, muscle impingement, foot deformities. One of the commonest causes is from excessive pronation (rolling in of the foot). What is the treatment of tarsal tunnel syndrome? Treatment begins with anti-inflammatory medications, orthotics/ insoles and changes in footwear may also help to relieve the symptoms, and possibly an injection of cortisone into the area around the nerve may release it. If none of these measures helps, then a procedure called a ‘tarsal tunnel release’ may be necessary. This is a surgical procedure performed in the
operating room and it lasts about 30 to 45 minutes. When a tarsal tunnel release is performed, an incision is made to open up the tarsal tunnel and decrease pressure on the posterior tibial nerve. This surgery is also very similar to a carpal tunnel release in the wrist. See a Podiatrist for an assessment if you think you have this condition.

Mind the Gap By Martin
The spring bulbs are putting on a great show in the garden but when they finish there is sometimes a lull before the summer blooms kick in. Fortunately there is a good range of easy to grow perennials to fill the gap with flower. These are some of my favourites. All are suitable for the smaller garden as well. Geum (“Avens”) are one of the most reliable and adaptable perennials for late spring and early summer. They form low-growing mats of tough leaves and have bell-shaped flowers on wiry stems in a range of colours. Some like “Lemon Drops” have nodding single flowers, whereas a lot of modern types have larger, outward-facing semi-double flowers. One of the best is “Hannays” [picture 1] with lots of showy orange flowers on 1ft tall plants. Great for the front of the border. The perennial Cornflowers (Centaurea) ae invaluable for their great show of bee-pleasing flowers in April, May
and June. The montana types are ideal for front to mid-border although these do spread once established. “Purple Heart” [picture 2] is one of best with her amethyst-centred white flowers. There are also pink, blue and purple varieties to choose from. “Jordy” [picture 5] is a new form; more upright in growth and with masses of burgundy red flowers on and off from early May right through to October. Iris are one of the glories of late spring. The bearded types have the showiest flowers and need a sunny, well-drained soil. My favourites however are the Siberian Irises [picture 3] – these will grow just about anywhere except dark shade and thrive in wet or dry soils. The wild ones are blue but for the garden you can find white, yellow, pink and combinations of these colours. Hardy Geraniums (“Cranesbill”) are out of fashion somewhat at the moment and often ignore because a few varieties spread and seed to excess. There are some really good, well-behaved ones for the front to mid-border though. Geranium macrorrhizum is a mouthful of a name but this is a really good doer, growing in sun
Blow
or deep shade and always free flowering. There are magenta, pink and white varieties available. The Bloody Cranesbills (Geranium sanguineum) – so called because of their red roots – are brilliant, weed smothering plants for the edge of a warm, sunny border. They flower their hearts out in May and June. I give them a good haircut in July and they reward this attention by flowering again in August and September. The best varieties are “Elke” [picture 4], “Elsbeth”, “Album” and “Max Frei”. There are lots more great perennials to bridge the gap between spring and summer, if you want to get inspired get out to a National Garden Scheme garden in April or May and see what’s in flower. Better yet come along to one of our Plant Hunters’ Fairs and get some great flowers to fill the gaps in your garden. Janet & I run SpecialPerennials, a small garden nursery in Hankelow Cheshire where we hold two National Plant Collections and grow a large range of plants for a nature friendly garden. Our garden was featured on BBC Gardener’s World in 2014. Our website www.specialperennials.com is full of colour photos and growing tips. We sell by mail order and at Plant Hunters’ Fairs throughout the season. We will be at Weston Park on May 3 & 4, the National Memorial Arboretum on May 23 and Hodnet Hall on May 30 & 31. We are happy to bring orders to plant fairs for you to collect.

Buxton’s Buxton’s Ltd is a family firm that have been supplying lawnmowers and other garden machinery for over 50 years. From their site on the edge of Cannock Chase the company has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the major suppliers of mowers in the midlands. Because of Buxton’s high service levels and exceptional showroom and workshop facilities the company
is an authorised main dealer for all of the top brands of lawnmowers, John Deere, Honda, Mountfield, Hayter, Toro, Stihl, Countax, Viking, Bosch, Stiga and Husqvarna. These top brands are backed up by factory trained mechanics who can carry out any servicing or repairs necessary. Buxton’s continual growth is due in part to their main road location on the A34 between Cannock and Stafford, but also their belief in the traditional values of excellent customer service and good value for money. Buxton’s supplies mowers to suit every lawn and every budget, as well as a complete range of garden machinery, including blowers, brushcutters, hedgetrimmers, shredders, cultivators and log splitters. Buxton’s ltd are specialists, and in the age of large impersonal national retailers it is refreshing to find a company that prizes good customer service above everything else.

I reckon legendary Irish poet W.B Yeats got it wrong when he wrote, ‘Wine comes in at the mouth and love comes in at the eye.’ Either that or he’d been drinking too much Guinness, because I think I’m falling head over heels in love with a Sat-nav. If that sounds unlikely, listen to this: she ain’t no ordinary synthesised approximate of a siren, but the living beating soul of an Alfa Romeo – specifically the Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2.0 JTDM-2 175bhp TCT Exclusive. Forget nostalgia and the Alfa V6 engine, with congested roads, all any motorist wants is the quickest route around the chaos, so these days you choose the engine with your head – in this case a frisky yet frugal 175 bhp 2 litre diesel unit – and the Sat-nav with your heart. Seduced by only her dulcet tones; everything else is pure imagination. There is a real warmth and humanity to her every utterance and I’ve found myself using her for even the shortest, most familiar journeys. She embodies beautifully the essence of the Giulietta, to which her ethereal spirit is bound: exotic, fiery and soulful. Never before has my pulse quickened and heart raced at the prospect of a trip to Wolverhampton. 60
Once inside – and now making full use of all five of my senses – I’m struck by the Giulietta’s cabin, which is swathed in supple red leather and laden with soft-touch plastics. There’s kit worth over £2000 thrown in as-standard for this Exclusive spec model, including rain-sensing wipers; automatic headlights; electric-folding door mirrors; tinted windows; an electro-chromatic rear-view mirror; and electric front-seat lumbar support. Everything inside is laid out with a sensible, intuitive take on the modern hatchback. And, yes, it may be just a hatchback and relatable as such but it’s still ever-so-slightly special. The Giulietta beguiles where a Volkswagen Golf makes a sound case in a Powerpoint presentation; bewitches as none of its competitors can. As my girlfriend Nicola adds, even its key-fob is sexed-up. Some car anoraks may point to Alfa’s of yore as explanation for this frisson of excitement, but they’re all ensconced in the pub, pedantically ruminating over the technical minutiae of every make and model of car since Benz’s Motorwagen, so it can’t be that. Maybe it’s the ever-unfathomable machinations of image. Maybe it’s the value-for-money pricing of just over £25,000. Maybe it’s how this car looks. But I’ll get to that. The engine starts unceremoniously enough, but quickly piques your interest when up and running, as it can
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY/JUNE 2015
be both docile and dumbfounding if the situation presents. It’s quick - 0-60 mph in 7.8 seconds; top speed, 135 mph - but economical too: 64.2 mpg on the combined cycle and responsible for just 116 g/km of Co2. It rides really well on its sports suspension and is never jarring. Equally the Giulietta is a capable performer whenever it’s possible to string a few corners together and is thus entirely justified in wearing the accoutrements of sportiness, like the 17” alloy wheels, a sports leather steering wheel with red stitching; aluminium sports pedals and kick-plates and side body skirts. The TCT semiautomatic gearbox is a willing and able partner in crime too, always impressive in its smooth changes and intelligence. But above all else, the Giulietta’s exterior visage is a stunningly attractive thing to behold. A total knock-out. So, yes, it may have been the sensuous sounds of its Sat-nav that first hooked me, but it’s the Alfa’s looks that have me sold; hook, line and sinker because nobody loves an ugly car. As I watch the dying embers of the setting Spring sun light the sky one last time, I gaze from my window upon the Giulietta’s beauty, wine glass in hand, and conclude that old William did have love sussed after all: ‘I lift the glass to my mouth, I look at you, and I sigh.’

g the rMoment Captur-in By Rob Taylo
Despite myriad technological advances in the last twenty years, nothing captures a moment in time better than a humble photograph.
17” alloys. And you can go much, much further than you’d every imagine possible with bodywork decals and contrasting roof colours. The theme of customisation continues inside also with detachable and washable seat covers, although there’s little value in going too over-the-top, as the standard cabin is such a nice place to be.
Whether in sepia or in infinitively editable iPhone form, the photograph is still the simplest expression of the way things are right now. If I had to today choose a muse to point my lens at, in an effort to best describe the motoring zeitgeist, I can think of no better candidate than the Renault Captur.
The shiny black centrepiece console houses an intuitive and well-designed Sat-nav; the plastics feel robust and well-made; the ergonomics are very good. The raised driving position gives an appreciable sense of empowerment and provides a field of vision far superior to that of the everyday hatchback. It is here where the Captur really starts to makes sense and goes along way to explain the current rash of mini-SUVs on the market.
Sitting high atop underpinnings of a conventional hatchback – the Renault Clio – but not constrained by the hidden architecture of traditional 4x4 systems, the Captur is Renault’s answer to that most modern phenomenon: the urban cross-over vehicle. It answers today’s ever-increasing demand for high-driving positions, masses of internal space and funky personalisation options. Yet despite giving so much extra over the hatchback the Captur remains clever, not corpulent; funky, not fat. It looks very striking in just about every colour combo I’ve seen, with its visualcortex arresting hues, jacked-up stance, sloping roofline and in this as-tested spec – Dynamique MediaNav – big 62
Riding higher than you ordinarily would injects a hitherto unknown confidence into driving around the urban jungle; you feel ever-so-slightly omniscient. The steering is light but accurate and the ride feels especially fluid when at speed and cruising. The city stuff is a cinch too - thanks to dainty dimensions and minimal overhangs – meaning you can place and park it with consummate ease. So it’s almost small enough for you to be able park it in your pocket and it won’t see you out of pocket either
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY/JUNE 2015
with comparably low running costs – especially when allied to this 1.5 litre diesel 90 bhp unit. With combined fuel consumption officially listed at 76.3 mpg and Co2 at 95 g/km, the Captur cheats so many of the charges that are traditionally levelled at SUVs. Furthermore, it’s reasonably lively off the line – 0-62mph in 12.6 seconds; 106 mpg flat-out – and torquey enough – packing as it does 220 Nm - to make mincemeat of motorways. But what really is the Captur’s trump card – other than its value-for-money pricing at just over £16,000 – is the sense of space inside. Wherever you sit – front, rear or in Fido’s spot in the boot - there’s oceans of leg, head and storage room. The boot space is listed at 377 litres, so there’s more than enough room for a few crates of Evian. It’ll surely capture your imagination – like it did mine – as to how Renault has managed to make big internally something so small externally. The Captur is seemingly a motoring panacea: providing almost every benefit of every class of car, with none of the inherent drawbacks. So, in this pointand-shoot society, there’s really only one target that prospective mini-SUV buyers need aim at.

In its fourth-generation, Corsa has never been so well served for driver comfort and safety. The new model is available with heated front seats, steering wheel and windscreen, as well as soft-tone ambient lighting and a full-size panoramic roof, matching equipment levels from the segment above. New safety systems also proliferate. Buyers can choose from a list including Side Blindspot Alert, High Beam Assist, Lane Departure Warning, bi-xenon lights and a rear-view camera. Vauxhall’s IntelliLink infotainment system features in a high sales volume model for the first time. It provides seamless integration of Apple iOS and Android smartphone functionalities inside the car, ensuring Corsa drivers stay safely connected when they are on the road. Comfort A new ThermaTec heated windscreen helps provide excellent visibility. As in the previous generation, the steering wheel and the front seats can also be heated. Unlike conventional air conditioning systems, the new Corsa’s electronic climate control uses a patented control strategy which maintains constant comfort through the seasons, without the need to change settings. Using performance data that includes more than 200 characteristics, a micro-processor computes the on-board climate and adjusts it to match the desired values. The result is an air conditioning system which is more stable and compensates for temperature fluctuations inside the car, making long journeys even more comfortable. An activated-carbon cabin air filter helps keeps pollen and unpleasant smells at bay. Seats featuring elaborate workmanship and optimal contours with contemporary upholstery fabrics give the new Corsa cabin a final quality flourish. There is also plenty of space inside both the new three and five-door Corsa. In the three-door version, Easy Entry front seats enable easy access to the rear seats. The 60/40 split folding rear bench seat turns the elegant interior into a spacious storage compartment. When the rear seat backrests are folded forward, the Corsa offers a load capacity of 1,120 litres. IntelliLink The new generation Corsa features Vauxhall’s IntelliLink infotainment system which brings the connected world of smartphones and apps into the cabin. 64

BringGo is IntelliLink’s navigation app. It can be downloaded from the app store as a map version for Eastern and Western Europe. Once downloaded, the map data remains installed on the user’s smartphone, which means Corsa owners do not need a smartphone broadband connection to use the BringGo navigation system. BringGo uses the smartphone’s GPS to locate the Corsa. The Stitcher app is a useful global podcast internet radio service which lets users listen to programmes live, or after they have been broadcast. Once Stitcher is downloaded to a smartphone, Corsa owners can access more than 10,000 podcasts on demand, including radio shows and live stations around the world, via the Corsa’s IntelliLink touchscreen.
