New Director at
pton Hospital m a rh e lv o W h lt a e H Nuffield With an established 15 year track record at Nuffield Health, Karen Pattison has been appointed to the pivotal role of Hospital Director for the 40 en-suite bedroom private hospital in Tettenhall, Wolverhampton from the end of March. Beginning her career as a locum Pharmacy Technician travelling around the Cheshire and Manchester area, Karen’s first role with Nuffield Health was at the North Staffordshire hospital as Pharmacy Manager from where she progressed to commercial manager and active member of the senior management team. Karen then moved to the south west to help with the commissioning of a brand new £20 million Nuffield Health hospital in Bristol. On the back of this success, the role of Hospital Director at Hereford and then Glasgow followed. Hospital Director Karen Pattison is clearly delighted with her new role at the pleasantly situated hospital in Tettenhall, saying “What I am enjoying most about Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital is the warmth of the people here, both patients and staff. All the team here are very friendly, caring and welcoming and willing to go the extra mile to make the hospital experience a relaxing one. Building on the success of the last 37 years that the hospital has been here, I am looking forward to developing Wolverhampton’s private hospital even further for patients. In the next two years, we are planning to install a whole new diagnostic centre with our static 1.5T MRI suite and a purpose designed eye clinic. We will be looking for local people to join our Patients’ Forum to help us and our clinicians design the services we need for the future.”
Rapid Expert Diagnosis and Treatment At Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital we want you to have the facts at your fingertips regarding private healthcare - you can choose your consultant, your hospital and get an appointment quickly.

Fabulous Phlox By Martin
The spring bulbs are putting on a great show in the garden but when they finish there is sometimes a lull before the summer blooms kick in. They can give years and years of service in the herbaceous or mixed border and provide a wonderful, scented summer display. Phlox hate being in pots so buy in spring and plant out before they become root-bound. They also hate being in greenhouses so avoid “pumped-up” plants forced on in heat. We’re all guilty of impulse buys (how else have I ended up with over 70 varieties of Phlox in the garden) but before planting out, stop and think. Phlox are very long-lived plants and although easy to move they will always leave behind roots that will send up new plants – so plan where you want them to grow first. The ideal site is sunny, with rich, well-dug soil with perhaps a little late afternoon shade to protect them from the extremes
of summer heat. In practice they get full sun or light shade in my garden and do pretty well in either. Border Phlox are incredibly hardy and start to show new growth in February. The new leaves are often attractively coloured but only a few varieties maintain these coloured leaves into summer, the others gradually turn green. Good coloured leaf types include Starfire, Blue Paradise and Logan Black. Variegated Phlox have lovely white and green or cream, red and green leaves throughout the summer to compliment the flowers. Enriching the soil with compost dug into the top 1ft of soil will do wonders for the plants. I find the chalk in mushroom compost helps to reduce mildew problems. I always give my Phlox a good dressing with a well-balanced fertiliser like Growmore in spring followed by blood, fish and bone in mid-summer. Also give the plants some space if possible to improve air circulation; plant border phlox about 2ft apart. Water the ground not the plant and try and use water at air temperature (say from a water butt, or a can filled a few hours before) rather than an icy blast from a hosepipe. Phlox are often recommended as candidates for the “Chelsea Chop” – the practice of cutting plants by about half their height around the time of Chelsea Flower Show to create bushier, later flowering plants. I rarely do this: instead I remove spent flower head in late July and into August to encourage side shoots to flower. Phlox make good cut flowers – cut in the morning and remove the lower leaves.

Blow
At the end of the season cut down the stems to ground level and put them in the council green waste bin rather than the compost heap to avoid carrying any pests or diseases from season to season. There are 100’s of varieties to choose from and often it’s the old, heritage varieties that are new to our nursery range as they are “rediscovered” growing in happy neglect in an old garden. In recent years we have reintroduced the old German varieties Sternhimmel (Starry Sky) and Lavendelwolke (Lavender Cloud) to go with Monte Cristallo and Kirchenfürst plus a brand new English variety raised by Terry Dagley and named Maude Stella Dagley as well as promoting old English varieties such as Elizabeth Arden, Bright Eyes and Border Gem. Once you’ve grown border Phlox you will be hooked by the beauty of the flowers and the heady scent on a summer’s evening. Janet & I run SpecialPerennials, a small garden nursery in Hankelow Cheshire where we hold two National Plant Collections and grow a large range of plants for a nature friendly garden. Our garden was featured on BBC Gardener’s World in 2014. Our website www.specialperennials.com is full of colour photos and growing tips. We sell by mail order and at Plant Hunters’ Fairs throughout the season. We will be at Arley Arboretum, near Bewdley on Saturday 4th July, Sugnall Walled Garden on Sunday 5th July and at the National Memorial Arboretum on Saturday 1st August. We are happy to bring orders to plant fairs for you to collect.

Two lucky winners can each win 4 tickets to see THE CAT IN THE HAT on Friday 4th September. Arriving at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre from Friday 4th to Saturday 5th September is THE CAT IN THE HAT. From the moment his tall, red-and-white-striped hat appears around the door, Sally and her brother know that the cat in the hat is the funniest, most mischievous cat they have ever met. With the trickiest of tricks and craziest of ideas, he turns a rainy
afternoon into an amazing adventure. But what will mum find when she gets home? Based on the much-loved book by Dr Seuss, THE CAT IN THE HAT is a lively and engaging first theatre experience for young children aged 3+. The Cat in the Hat was first published in 1957 as Dr. Seuss’s second book for children. It marked the transition of Theodor Seuss Geisel from successful advertising executive and political cartoonist, to world-famous illustrator and children’s author. The curious and intricate rhyming found in THE CAT IN THE HAT is still adored decades later with over 250 million copies sold worldwide in more than 20 different languages. Katie Mitchell’s stage adaptation of The Cat in the Hat first played in the National Theatre’s Cottesloe Theatre in December 2009, before transferring to the Young Vic in 2010.

New President The new President of Soroptimist International Cannock & District is Lynne Tuckley. She was given the chain of office by out-going President Dr Janis Lomas at the AGM held in April. As she took up her new position and addressed the Club, Lynne first of all congratulated Immediate Past President
Janis and her team for the excellent Diamond Year they had organised, a year which had seen the club flourish in so many ways. She thanked everyone for allowing her to take on the role of President at a time when the club is in such excellent health and said that it is her wish to maintain and build on all that has been achieved and hand over an equally healthy Club in twelve months time. Her theme for the year is: ‘Carpe Diem – Seize the Day!’ and she will be encouraging everyone to do that by taking whatever opportunities are offered them. Lynne has been a Soroptimist for 16 years and has been involved in projects at local, national and international level. She is well known in the area having been a Court Usher in the ‘old’ Cannock Magistrates Court and more recently as Witness Support manager
Lynne Tuckley, President, SI Cannock & District 2015 - 2016
Part of the Chairman’s role over their term of office is to raise money for their chosen charities. Cllr Freeman has chosen two; Teenage Cancer Care Trust and 5th Cannock St Luke’s Brownies.
Councillor Maureen Freeman was named as Chairman and Councillor Zaphne Stretton as Vice Chairman for 2015/16 at the Annual Council Meeting on Wednesday 27th May. Maureen has taken over from outgoing chairman Councillor Alan Pearson. 14
Janis and all club members wished President Lynne well and assured her of their support over the coming year as they continue to educate, empower and enable women and girls locally and globally. The first major event Lynne and her team have organised is a Quiz to raise funds for victims of Domestic Violence. It will be held at the Barns on June 30th, teams of 4 are welcome, tickets cost £8.00 per person and include hot food. Compton Hospice Open’s Second Superstore in Cannock
Following the successful opening of its first Superstore in Wolverhampton City Centre earlier this year Compton Hospice opened the doors to its second Superstore on Church Street in Cannock on Thursday 21st May. The charity, which supports families affected by terminal illness, has been providing care to patients in the Cannock and surrounding areas for a number of years but up until now has not had a shop in the area. Paul Carter, Trading Manager at Compton Hospice, commented: “We are incredibly excited to be able to bring our second Compton Hospice Superstore to Cannock. We pride ourselves on offering customers an enjoyable shopping experience which in turn will help us to generate funds towards providing care for terminally ill patients and their families.” The store, which will be located in the former Blockbuster unit on Church Street, will feature a range of departments including men’s and women’s clothing, accessories, furniture, home and electrical goods, brica-brac, Compton Kids corner and giftware items, and will be supported by a team of up to 30 volunteers. 20

Grace Ruston, PR & Marketing Officer for Compton Hospice, added: “The opening of our second superstore will be one of the ways that we as a hospice plan to raise funds so that we can expand and develop our Community Nursing team. “This is a vital service which allows terminally ill people to be cared for in their own homes and for which demand is at its highest. “Care is delivered to patients and families free of charge, which in turns costs us as a charity over £6 million ever year. The funds raised from sales generated in the Cannock Superstore, as well as our other Compton Hospice charity shops, help make a significant contribution towards these running costs.” The store officially opened its doors to the public on Thursday 21st May with many excited customers waiting outside the doors eager to hunt out the latest bargains. The Compton Hospice Cannock Superstore is located at Church Street, Cannock, Staffordshire, WS11 1DH and is open from 9am to 7pm – Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday. Carver Wolverhampton marathon events Planning is well underway for the 2015 events scheduled to take place on SUNDAY 6th SEPTEMBER. The Marathon and Half Marathon are very popular with runners from not just Wolverhampton but all across the country. The organisers are well into the planning now and it is hoped that we can capture the sense of community spirit in West Park again. Race Director/Chair Mary Harding says: “Now in its 18th year the events have grown with The Banks’s 10K replacing the relays and the Cousins 20K cycle ride, always popular with families. Alongside all of that the children’s mini marathon encourages youngsters to take part and this year we are pleased to announce the introduction of the 3K Walk in the Park kindly sponsored by Call Print. It is hoped that families will enter for the walk and feel part of the events. There will be medals for all finishers. Entries are coming in each day and we are now on Facebook and Twitter if anyone would
like to send us a message. Online entries can be made through the marathon website www.carverwolverhamtonmarathonevents.co.uk or via Carvers Building Supplies. The Committee are always looking for volunteers to help with the many duties on Marathon weekend. This could involve manning a water station or marshalling around the course or duties in the park”. It is a great event for the city and good fun to be part of. Mary hopes that the loyal sponsors and supporters feel they get some promotion through the events. It certainly would not be the success it has become without their backing.

Riley Platts
With June bringing National Volunteer Week, Heart Research UK are seeking out the help of local volunteers all over the country to help them beat the country’s biggest killer, heart disease. Any time you can give takes them one step closer to winning the battle and with one person dying in the UK every seven minutes, it’ a battle well worth fighting. Without volunteers supporting Heart Research UK with the work they do, children like three-year-old Riley Platts (pictured) would not have benefitted from the advances in research that helped save his life. Riley has gone through several major operations that would not have been available without
the technology developed and paid for by charities like Heart Research UK. Because heart disease affects people all over the UK, they need willing volunteers from all corners of the country and in-between to represent them in their local area. Their work spreads far and wide and some of the activity Heart Research do includes helping children live normal lives after surgery, funding grants in local communities to educate the public with crucial health matters, pioneering medical research, masterclasses training the UK’s young clinicians to be our experts of tomorrow as well as talks in schools to help prevent unhealthy lifestyles occurring. The total cost relating to cardiovascular disease in the UK is estimated at £19 billion each year so joining Heart
Research UK to do whatever you can in the time you have available will help reduce these huge costs and prevent approximately 80% of the deaths that occur which are associated with heart disease. Volunteering for Heart Research UK is an extremely rewarding experience. Whether you are looking for work experience, a student increasing their knowledge, retired people with time to give, out of work, inbetween jobs or a full time parent - they can offer you a role that will complement your life, fit around your usual day and give you a huge sense of fulfilment and experience. Their volunteering roles are flexible dependant on your availability and skills, so whether you only have a couple of hours to spare a week or have more time to offer on a regular basis they’ve got a role at Heart Research UK to suit you. If you would like to be part of their fabulous team then please fill in your details on their website www.heartresearch.org.uk/ get-involved/volunteering For further details please call 0113 234 7474 or email community@heartresearch.org.uk

Great live music throughout
the weekend, meanwhile, helps ensure a party atmosphere for the hottest date in Staffordshire’s culinary calendar. Festival Chairman, Richard Stevens, says: “The festival remains a not-forprofit, community organisation and while its core objective remains to help bring business into Stone and provide a great weekend for both the community and visitors alike, we have expanded our aims to promoting the great food & drink available locally and helping to put Staffordshire firmly on the ‘foodie’ tourism map. We see more and more visitors coming each year and travelling from further afield – once again in 2015, alongside some firm favourites there
will be some exciting new additions set to be announced so there will be something for return visitors as well as those coming along for the first time.” More than just one big weekend! Thank you!… Around this time last year, I explained how the demand for our hospice care in the home service had dramatically increased by over 20% in just two months.
I also asked if people would be willing to help contribute towards the daily cost of these services by making a small donation. Thank you so much if you helped to support us in this way. I am delighted…
Caring Together
Charity Reg No: 512387
There is an urgent need to meet the ever growing demand of local people with an incurable illness. We will never charge patients for the care they receive but we ask for your support in order to be able to expand our care to where people need and want it most…. in the comfort of their own home. Any small donation towards this would be very gratefully received.
to let you know that thanks to the local support a total of £34,235 was raised through the Compton Hospice ‘Hospice Care Everywhere’ appeal. This means we are now able to make positive plans for the future of our desperately needed community based care.
How to donate:
The kind support has enabled us to:
Post your donation to us using the form overleaf to 39 Compton Road West, Wolverhampton WV3 9DW
• engage additional Healthcare Assistants as part of our Hospice at Home team, providing personal and emotional care 24/7 as part of either the night team or day team • initiate a recruitment programme to double the number of our Community Nurse Specialists, who offer an holistic assessment of our patients and their family’s needs in their own home, identifying any physical, psychological, spiritual or social needs and issuing prescriptions where necessary, preventing any lengthy wait for new medications when time is of the essence. • actively recruit a specialist palliative care doctor whose role it is to assess and monitor patients and to provide symptom and pain relief to people in their own home.
Visit: www.compton-hospice.org.uk/donate/online/ Text COMP01 followed by the amount you wish to donate e.g £5 to 70070
Most people are aware that we have an excellent inpatient unit at Compton Hospice which offers free expert medical and nursing support for local people with an incurable illness. However very few people realise that for every one person we care for on our ward, there are 33 more people we are looking after out in the community. At any one point in time, Compton Hospice is tending to over 500 patients, most of whom are being cared for in their own homes. Most of us express a wish to die in our own homes with our loved ones around us and at Compton, we do everything within our power to ensure this can happen wherever possible.
Please, if you can continue to help…
We will never charge our patients for this care and we receive only 1/3rd of the cost from the NHS. We therefore ask you to consider making a donation towards the cost of this important service which allows families to cherish their time together in their own home.
We aim to double the size of our Community Nurse Specialist team over the next few years at an estimated ongoing cost of £200,000 per annum to Compton Hospice.
We are so fortunate to have supporters who donate so generously to ensure that Compton Hospice can continue this care for local people.
• overall, to provide dignity and comfort to many more people wishing to spend the last weeks and days of their lives at home.

Tettenhall College
As one of the leading independent schools in the region, Tettenhall College is there for every step of your child’s educational journey. From the first written words of our youngest pupils to sixth formers moving on to university, we take pride in each individual achievement. The journey begins at our nursery, where children join us from the age of two. Once again judged to be ‘Outstanding’ in our latest official inspection, the nursery helps young children develop confidence and an enthusiasm for learning which continues throughout the School. Welly walks, music sessions and creative play sow the seeds for successful social and educational development, which is taken to the next level at our excellent Preparatory School. There, dedicated staff take the time to nurture each child’s individual strengths, preparing them for the challenges of senior school. Being part of an ‘all-through’ school with a closeknit community provides a seamless educational experience, with no anxiety over secondary level change. All children are known and valued and feel secure in their surroundings. Our pupils enjoy activities such as Forest School in our stunning ancient woodlands. This will be enhanced by a complementary new mountain bike trail, one of many exciting new additions which are part of a multi-million pound redevelopment currently taking shape. It includes a new floodlit Astroturf pitch, a new tennis and netball area and a high ropes facility. Cafe culture is also being embraced, with a new coffee shop set to be unveiled for the start of the autumn term. This will be open to Sixth Formers, parents and staff and will be housed in the old stable block that formed part of the original Thorneycroft estate.
The boys’ boarding house will have a major facelift incorporating 21st Century facilities and ensuite accommodation. The School’s oldest building, The Towers, is one of the county’s few Grade II* listed buildings and expert conservation architects are currently working on sympathetic modernisation plans. It is home to our own theatre, where talented pupils regularly perform full-scale musical productions. Our pupils also frequently support professional productions at The Grand Theatre in Wolverhampton; performing arts is a real strength of the School. Reading is a vitally important part of school life and a love of books is developed at a very early age thanks to our wonderful library and literature-based activities. Pupils are taking part in a Year of Reading event, enjoying author visits, awards, a new Preparatory School Book Club, fairs and workshops. Last year was a record year for A Level A* performers and our overall pass rate was almost 99 per cent. Pupils went on to top universities, including Oxford and UCL. GCSE results were also excellent, with pupils achieving top grades. Eleven Year 10 pupils and one Year 9 pupil also took their Maths GCSE a year early, with all achieving top A* and A grades. While we are very proud of these academic achievements, we understand the importance of extra-curricular activities and offer an innovative and varied programme, from games clubs to sports. Pupils are also top performers in English Speaking Board Exams and are encouraged to undertake voluntary work and charitable pursuits. Our children have been praised by inspectors for their excellent behaviour, good manners and confidence, a reflection of our school ethos. We give them skills beyond the classroom which help them succeed in whichever path they choose to take. If you would like to start your child’s educational journey with us, at any stage, please contact our admissions team to arrange a visit and see first-hand the happiness and enthusiasm of our pupils. Our next official Open Day is Saturday 26th September from 10am – 1pm. For further information and to reserve your place, please contact the Admissions Team at the School on 01902 751119 or email admissions@tettcoll.co.uk.

Read through once and measure everything out before starting.
Ingredients Posset • 600ml double cream • 150g of caster sugar • 2 medium sized unwaxed lemons COMPOTE • 350g frozen blueberries • 50ml water • 50g caster sugar BISCOTTI • 100g Organic plain flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 30g ground almonds • 50g whole skin on almonds • 75g caster sugar • 1 beat up egg • 3 drops of almond extract 38
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2015
POSSET Firstly, pour the cream into a pan on a moderate heat and bring gradually to the boil. Once bubbling add the caster sugar and whisk until dissolved then add the zest of one lemon and the juice of one lemon, taste the mixture and if not lemony enough add more lemon juice, don’t forget to leave a little juice for the blueberries. COMPOTE Whilst the cream is coming up to the boil add the blueberries, water, sugar and lemon juice and simmer and stir until a blue jam appears. Once you have a jam consistency remove from heat and divide into glass jars, allow to cool and then pour in the lemon posset mix and allow to cool - you can do this the other way round if you like, lemon first. Although this dessert can be quick setting you should make these the day before or first thing in the morning to be sure they will set ready for dinner. BISCOTTI Switch your oven on to 170˚C gas mark 3. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt, ground almonds into a large mixing bowl then add the whole almonds, sugar and egg, mix together with a wooden spoon then bring the mix together with you hands into a dough. Place onto a floured tray and bake in the oven for half an hour and then allow to cool completely - by this time the possets should be starting to set. Once the biscotti is completely cooled slice it into thin slices and turn the oven down to 150oC, gas mark 2 and place back in the oven until crisp. SERVING SUGGESTION You could make smaller versions of these in shot glasses to serve at a party or as part of a trio of desserts and add lemon flavoured meringue and lavender scented sponge with whipped cream.
Open from 5.30pm - Midnight (7days a week)

nT The Moat House, Acto
The Moat House Acton Trussell offers luxury accommodation, fine dining, function rooms and conference facilities for any occasion and is an exclusive wedding venue situated in Staffordshire. Set in the picturesque village of Acton Trussell, The Moat House is a family
owned grade 2 listed manor house dating back to the 14th century. After making a reservation a few weeks ago, my partner and I were more than looking forward to dining at the award winning Orangery Restaurant at The Moat House in Acton Trussell. Upon our arrival we both now understood why our friends and family were recommending The Moat House to us. The hotel

and restaurant is a beautiful establishment running along side the canal and overlooking the lake with lots of wildlife in and around. As we walked towards the bar entrance we noticed two outside seating areas, one area beside the lake and another near to the hotel entrance and had we arrived earlier we both mentioned that it would be nice to have drinks outside, especially being such a pleasant sunny evening. As we entered the bar area we were welcomed by Andrew the Restaurant Manager who showed us to our table in the Orangery Restaurant. The décor inside the restaurant was as beautiful as the outside, with stunning chandeliers, oak flooring, also very spacious and elegant, everything you would expect from a fine dining restaurant! Once seated we were given the menu and the extensive wine list to peruse. Andrew explained that there were two menu’s for us to choose from, one being the a la carte and the other was the lunch and early doors menu (available 12:00 – 14:00 Monday to Saturday, 2 courses for £18 and 3 courses for £21, also available 18:30 – 19:30 Sunday to Friday, 2 courses £21 and 3 courses for £24)

We were then presented with an Amuse Bouche which was very pleasing to our palettes and left us excited for what was to come.
After ordering a bottle of Pinot Grigio to share we were ready to browse through all of the wonderful dishes available to us. After much deliberation I decided on the 3 courses from the early doors menu and my partner choosing from the a la carte.
beer sauce (supplement £3) and for my partner the Staffordshire sirloin steak, roasted vine tomato, Portobello mushroom, triple cooked chips and sauce béarnaise.
For starters I chose the New farm asparagus, air dried ham, crispy Legbar egg and smoked hollandaise sauce and for my partner the goats’ cheese cannelloni, heritage beetroot, black olive tuiles and pistachio granola.
And last but not least, my favourite part of the meal, desserts! I wanted to try them all but went with the Chocolate fondant, blood orange ice cream and hazelnut wafer and my partner choosing the peanut butter cheesecake, cookie crumble, roasted banana ice cream, banana jam, toasted marshmallow and peanut tuiles.
For our main courses I opted for the Entrecote of beef, served medium rare, white onion puree, asparagus, shallot, morels, onion ash, and
Once our order was taken, our friendly and attentive waiter offered us freshly made sour dough bread and also topped up our glasses.
Shortly after, our starters were served and both were delicious with great flavours which left us eagerly anticipating our main courses. Our main dishes did not disappoint, both the steak and the entrecote of beef were phenomenally tasty and cooked to perfection. When our desserts arrived we both said how beautifully and skilfully presented all of the dishes had been this evening and again the flavours were outstanding! We finished our evening with filtered coffee and said it was quite possibly one of the best meals we have had, and we have eaten well, many, many times all over the world!

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2015
Speaking of eating, it’s time to get to it: chop, chop, as the chef said to the waiter.
It’s funny how the brain works. That tangled electro-chemical web is made up of billions of neurons, all bouncing messages around for purposes that are largely of no consequence whatsoever to mankind. Here is a case in point. It’s nothing more than a causal connection that I made just now, after thinking back to last night’s fine dining with friends at the King’s Repose Indian restaurant in Featherstone: There I was just inside the entrance, chatting and being a model paradigm of wit and joviality, when I saw the Bombay Mix on the table. My dining companions - partner Gisella; friends, Brian and Sam Saunders - all remarked upon how nice it was to see the spicy mix of dried peanuts, chickpeas, curry leaves, corn, rice, lentils and onion. So often conspicuous by its absence in other curry houses, plainly the King’s Repose had scored highly already. But more specifically, that humble bowl of goodies has just sparked a flashback to a story from two years ago relating to The Queen and her fury after discovering that royal protection officers had been helping themselves to her Bombay Mix and nuts in Buckingham Palace.
A quick Google tells us that: ‘Palace officials sent a memo to royal protection officers warning them to “keep their sticky fingers out”; after Her Majesty noticed the snacks were disappearing. The Queen became so incensed that she even began marking the bowls to check if the levels were dropping.’ The fact that I should remember the story when reviewing the appropriately regal King’s Repose made me smile - but not as much as our party did last night, however. Much merriment began with chatting and the aforementioned nibbles at the bar/ lounge space downstairs, before continuing up into the restaurant above. The King’s Repose is very olde worlde inside, not at all what you’d expect from the usual Indian restaurant; so often they can be modern to the point of being soulless, but not here. Here there are exposed beams, portraits of Charles II and Oliver Cromwell on the walls, antique swords trussed to the converted-barn walls and all manner of paraphernalia peculiar to a theme loosely connected to the buildings history, which is reputedly said to be on the site of one of Charles II’s many hiding places. Once upstairs and seated we take full advantage of our friends’ intimate knowledge of the restaurant, which has been located on New Road, amid a delightfully pastoral idyll consisting of mature trees and manicured lawns, for more years than either of them can remember. Eating at the restaurant on an almost weekly basis, they cite the excellent value-for-money food, friendly staff and the restaurant’s unique atmosphere as the main attractions.
We start, as is traditional, with a poppadom and mint sauce. We order our starters from a menu bursting with temptingly tantalising treats. Gisella plumps for the ‘Murgh Tikka’ (£3.50) – boneless chicken, marinated in mild sauce, cooked in tandoor – whereas I go for ‘Lai Bagun’ (£3.95) – Beef, tomato filled with spiced chicken chat, cooked tandoori style and served with salad. Both dishes arrive quickly and are piping hot, having been delivered by personable waiting staff. Special mention goes to the fine quality of the beef, which is both tender and tasty, but each dish is very well received. Attention to detail when presenting food is clearly a high priority at King’s Repose. Now to the mains: King’s Repose Chicken Tikka Vindaloo (£8.95) from the ‘Old Favourites’ section of the menu and, from the ‘House Specialities’ board, ‘Chamura Bengali’ (£17.95), which consists of king prawns and breast of chicken in a signature sauce. Gisella polishes off every morsel of her vindaloo and is full of praise for what she calls “an expertly-judged juxtaposition of flavours; familiar yet fresh; spicy but not to the detriment of the overall dish.” In short, it’s delicious. My choice leaves my taste buds overwhelmed with joy; the dish explodes with rich textures and rewards the sophisticated palate. The prawns are crisp and well-cooked; the sauce is exquisite. The white wine we have on the table complements it well. And so to dessert - Mango-based Kulfi Indian Ice Cream (£2.50) - which we elect to share. It’s a sweet and successful way to end. And now, with the sheer volume of restaurant reviews that I have under my belt causing my brain to flag, I must try to end anew this restaurant review. How about a word of advice I wonder? Yes that’s it: be sure to book your table in advance, dear reader, as the restaurant can get extremely busy, especially at weekends. It’s a no-brainer, really.

L-R: Outgoing President Dr Janis Lomas with Incoming President, SI Cannock & District, Lynne Tuckley
SI Cannock & District held its AGM at The Barns. The meeting marked the end of the club’s Diamond Anniversary year: the first meeting of interested women was held in July 1954 at the Gas Showrooms in Cannock and the Club was chartered at a formal event held at Eaton Lodge Hotel in Rugeley in February 1955. Dr Janis Lomas was the club’s President for this very special anniversary year and she reported on the successes and achievements of the year, thanking club members for their support. The year had seen some very special events: a visit from Mary, Queen of Scots [Lesley Smith, curator of Tutbury castle], two wonderful visits to Tutbury Castle; an afternoon tea and fashion cavalcade at Ingestre Hall; International Night with a speaker from Bletchley Park followed by a visit to Bletchley; Christmas celebrations at Trentham Gardens and at The Barns; and a magnificent glittering evening at Rodbaston Hall to celebrate the 60th, Diamond, Charter evening. During the year club members had continued to support Pathway, the refuge for women victims of Domestic Violence by providing toiletries throughout the year and Christmas gifts; St Giles Hospice by providing 46
cakes on a regular basis – these are offered to visitors at the Hospice; the Soup Kitchen in Mill Street when Cannock Soroptimists helped to provide and prepare a Christmas meal. In addition they have held events to raise funds for international projects such as Birthing in the Gambia, known as the BIG project; for the International President’s Appeal to provide solar power for cooking and lighting in areas of Asia and Africa so that women and girls do not have to spend most of their day collecting firewood and therefore can spend time on their education; and for the organisation’s Emergency Fund, enabling Soroptimists to send funds to any disaster area in the world as soon as they are needed. The club has also continued its work raising awareness on the issues of sex trafficking and domestic violence and has also held events to raise awareness on the debilitating condition of endometriosis. Members have organised and attended events to learn more about Female Genital Mutilation [FGM] and are now in a position, along with all other clubs in the Region, to begin taking action on this issue.
that we would use the year to bring everyone together, involve as many people as possible and have a year of fun and friendship while not forgetting our Programme Action work which is the heart and soul of our club and what makes it different from other clubs. I will leave you to judge to what extent the Diamond Anniversary year fulfilled the promise that we set out for it’ Members confirmed that the aims had been well and truly met!! President Janis went on to thank her ‘Diamond Girls’ Jill Gooch and Trish Mellor who had helped her plan the year and had served as secretaries to the club for the year. President Janis was thanked by members for all that she had done for the Club to make the 60th year so special and for the fun and fellowship they had all enjoyed. py Sue Starr Hypnothera “Throughout the last year, my client base has continued to increase. Clinical Hypnotherapy continues to develop credibility as a leading alternative therapy and features in many media stories mostly for the right reasons! Our point of difference is that we include more behavioural tools, such as CBT and NLP, alongside Hypnotherapy to support clients in achieving their personal goals”. Sue Starr Hypnotherapy has over the last 3 years established itself as a leading practice in South Staffordshire. Sue continues “Teenagers and young children (as young as 6) are an increasing part of my client base; they tend to be great fun to work with and engage really well with therapy. The diversity of issues faced can range from low confidence, anxieties, exam pressures and bullying. GP and school referrals for this continue to highlight a broader shortage in support for young people where quick response is essential”
52
As well as the regular client base, last summer saw an increase in people wanting Hypnotherapy prior to weddings. Best Man speeches, Bride confidence and self-esteem concerns have so far been supported by Sue, “Weddings are supposed to be the best day of a couples lives, however, this pressure of being in the spotlight, organising so much and wanting it to be perfect can be overwhelming. We help with the mindset so that the big day can be fully enjoyed by confident, in control Brides, Grooms and the Best Man!” The most important thing is that a client really wants a beneficial change for themselves and that they are committed to making a change. Expecting a magic wand result with no hard work or challenges is not the case with Hypnotherapy. “Many people nowadays want quick fixes with no effort; Hypnotherapy requires dedication from the client to bring about change. But combining Hypnotherapy and client commitment facilitates long lasting change rather than a temporary fix!”

nergie Rachel’s Journey at é Rachel Allport’s journey to fitness started from a picture, ironically celebrating the success of one of her pupils. A committed and successful driving instructor, Rachel’s dedication to her pupils had come at a cost. With a packed schedule throughout her working day, Rachel regularly skipped meals and snacked at service stations whilst on the go. Feeling unhappy, Rachel knew it was time to make a change. Rachel says: “From the moment I walked in I knew that the club was for me.” As the saying goes, you can’t hit a target that you cannot see, and with a Caribbean holiday booked in 8 months’ time Rachel set herself a goal of losing 4 stone ahead of her holiday. Rachel explains: “When I joined I weighed 19 stone, I enrolled on the clubs 30 day émpower results guaranteed programme and was given an exercise programme and nutritional advice tailored around my goals. Rachel explains: “The motor-assisted machines ensured that my body was able to get used to exercising in a safe and controlled way, stretching my limbs gently. I then had the confidence to move onto the EasyLine circuit which certainly added an extra dimension to my program, the equipment was easy to use, no weights required, I just worked at my own pace, the more effort I put in, the more the resistance built up.”
way out, Rachel then targeted losing a further stone before her holiday and smashed that goal too, weighing 14st 10lb at the time of leaving for her holiday. Progress hasn’t stopped and several months on Rachel now weighs 13st. After experiencing first-hand the life changing benefits that came from exercising at the club, Rachel set about helping, supporting and inspiring other members to achieve their goals. Rachel’s passion for helping others led to her leaving her driving instructor business and taking on a role at the club.
Through her determination Rachel made rapid progress, achieving her target of losing 4 stone a full month ahead of schedule. Not one to take the easy

way. ‘The need for speed’ has extended to the kitchen and dining room. If we take the time to stop and analyse our lifestyle we almost invariably fall short in several areas of nutrition. Don’t Panic - Help is available! Visit the ‘Nature’s Sunshine’ page on our website and take the free online ‘Lifestyle Analysis’. Answer all the questions honestly and the results are always informative. You can then choose to either order the products online, or discuss them with your practitioner when you visit.
To date we have looked at Beauty/Aesthetics through the ages, how our machines work and what treatments we can offer to help you achieve your desired result. But what happens when you leave the clinic after your treatment? What can you do to help preserve the results that our treatments have produced? The most obvious way is to book regular (usually monthly) ‘top ups’. This will allow our practitioners to maintain and improve upon the initial results. However there is much more you can do. The skin is a good external indicator of health. To maintain that ‘healthy glow’ eating well is essential. The modern lifestyle can make this very difficult, years ago, before the advent of fast/convenient food, the ingredients of our meals were generally simple and nutritious. In the 21st Century our intake of chemicals, food additives, preservatives and colouring agents has changed this dramatically. The skin is now subject to far more harmful environmental pollutants than ever before plus the everyday stress of modern life. So what can you do to help reduce these effects? The main areas which have an impact are: a good skin care regime, a balanced nutritious diet and continued treatments. There is a skin product to suit most skin types; The Chase CACI Clinic can carry out a free skin analysis using 54
a ‘Wood’ lamp, with the result being recorded on the universally accepted ‘Fitzpatrick Scale’ for identifying skin types. You can then choose from the finest products to suit your skin. We recommend Deborah Mitchell ‘Heaven’ Bee Venom range and the ‘Arbonne’ range of products. These two ranges are both extremely effective and ethically produced. For more details please consult your practitioner when you visit. The balanced nutritious diet can be more difficult to achieve, with so many of the pressures of life getting in the
Finally, there is a fabulous hand held CACI machine available to purchase for use at home, to continue the wonderful work done by your practitioner at The Chase CACI Clinic. This is an easy to use device that allows you to ensure that all the treatments you receive from us have the maximum possible effect. Please ask your practitioner for more information. This may all seem a little daunting but can be incorporated into your daily life with ease. The three pronged approach to skin care, nutrition and home treatments will leave you feeling and looking better.

Tom’s tip: Heel Pain? Heel pain is also known as ‘policeman’s heel’. The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis which is commonly referred to as a heel spur. The plantar fascia is a broad band of fibrous tissue which runs along the bottom surface of the foot, from the heel to the toes. Plantar fasciitis is a condition in which the plantar fascia is inflamed. This condition can be very painful and cause considerable amount of suffering. Symptoms include a dull ache which is felt most of the time with episodes of a sharp pain in the centre of the heel or on the inside margin of the heel. Often the pain is worse on first rising in the morning and after rest and is aggravated by prolonged weight bearing & thin soled shoes. Causes of heel pain • Biomechanical problems (walking abnormalities) are a major cause of plantar fasciitis. • Tight plantar fascia (this is often caused by tight calf muscles).
• Excessive flattening of the arch on weight bearing. • Excessive pronation (rolling in of the foot too much) • Obesity is a major cause of plantar fasciitis. Which is why this condition is common in middle aged and over weight adults. • A sudden increase in weight, such as pregnancy can also lead to plantar fasciitis. • A sudden increase in walking or a sporting activity can also be a contributing factor. • Standing for long periods at work. • There are several conditions which may cause pain under the heel. Osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, fractured heel bone, bursitis, neuritis, oedema, circulatory issues, poly and fibromyalgia are but a few. Treatment options for heel pain Orthotics (insoles)- One of the most effective treatment options. This comes with Stretching exercises for plantar
fascia and calf muscles. NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) may also be prescribed by your chiropodist/podiatrist or doctor. Plantar Fascia night splints, Steroid/ local anaesthetic injection and surgery are further treatment options.

g volunteers n u o y r fo y a w e th s d a Luke le “GO in with a positive attitude and it pays off.” That’s the message from young volunteer Luke Sims, who helps people get active and healthy at Chase Leisure Centre. The 15-year-old, from Heath Hayes, starting working at the centre in January as part of his Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and decided to continue volunteering after his six month placement ended. He said: “My tasks have varied from coaching football to working in the gym – all the activities have been enjoyable and exciting. My favourite part is working around and meeting a variety of new people, giving me the experience of what work would be like. “I want to continue volunteering because it’s great to help people, and the staff at the centre have also made 56
me want to carry on as they have been so supportive. I’d say to other young people, just give it a go. You have to go in with a positive attitude and all your hard work pays off.” Pete Burt, Managing Director at WLCT, which manages leisure services on behalf of Cannock Chase Council, said: “Volunteers like Luke are incredibly inspiring, giving up their own time to make a real difference to people’s lives. At Chase, Luke is playing an

of Attorney’? r e w o P g in st a ‘L a d e e Why do I n After a Will, one of the most important documents that all adults should have in place is a Lasting Power of Attorney. These documents, ‘LPAs’, enable you to personally choose who will be authorised to make your decisions should you loose mental capacity. Do not think loss of mental capacity is only a problem for the very elderly perhaps with dementia. It is not an age related problem. Anyone can loose capacity at any age. Sadly all it takes is something as simple as a fall or a car crash, or a stroke. And this can happen to anyone at any age. If you do not have the documents in place and the problem does
occur, then someone, generally, but not always a family member must make application to the Court of Protection for them to be authorised by that court to make your decisions. This process is very long and complex and expensive. It can take up to 9 months and several thousands of pounds in fees. This is a very painful process for a family member to have to undertake on your behalf. And, you may end up with someone you would not have chosen yourself having the legal authority to make your decisions for you. Even worst is the case where the court may have to choose a professional person as attorney, who will then be charging your estate significant fees,
possibly for years, for making your decisions for you. The answer is very simple, have your LPAs prepared now, while you can clearly make your own decisions about who should be the named attorneys. d Subr aru-ity Sense aBynRo b Taylo
The trouble with the ever-increasing raft of technology in cars is that, like a chid with a bottomless bag of sweets, manufacturers just don’t know when enough is enough. Drive - or even just go so far as to open the door on - almost any new car today and you are berated with myriad beeps and bongs. Everything from dashboard “oil pressure OK” pop-ups to parking sensors and messages about risk of ice on road is deemed ‘bong-worthy’, but I find it all hugely distracting and at times deeply unsettling. You’re a dipstick if you don’t regularly use the oil dipstick and if you can’t figure out for yourself that falling temperatures may be a potential driving hazard then you should probably just stick to having snowball fights with your friends. I don’t trust parking sensors or reversing cameras, that’s why I turn around in my seat when reversing… and also because vampires have no reflection. So I say, enough is enough. At last I’ve found a car that credits me with a modicum of common sense – the new Subaru WRX STI. I enjoy the sense that with the STI everything essential to driving safely and soundly is unspoken and reassuringly present, but without any trace of annoying bossiness. You may 62
think this odd given that the STI is the Japanese marque’s iconic sports saloon; a car that is a demonstrable powerhouse of speed, brimming with attitude. You may think that with more power and performance comes a greater need to interfere in the business of driving, but it doesn’t. Thankfully. Instead Subaru just gets on with equipping every WRX STI with a cavalcade of kit to make your time in the vehicle as safe – and fun – as possible. Most noteworthy are newly tweaked A-pillars to improve forward visibility; greater use of ultra hightensile steel to provide a cocoon which maximises protection through passive safety, as well as a revised ESP system with multiple modes that is so clever that the STI can boast near identical braking performance in both wet and dry conditions. And yet there still exists an option to disable the systems if you want to have more fun on a racetrack and since this latest STI has a upgraded suspension set-up and tweaked chassis that was benchmarked dynamically against a Porsche 911 Carrera S in development, why wouldn’t you? Forget egregious coddling and the faux safety of the aforementioned beeps and bongs: what could be safer than permanent four-wheel drive? With any Subaru there exists an implicit trust between manufacturer and owner: a tacit agreement that rather refreshingly gives power back to the
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2015
people, breaking the shackles of the Nanny State. And – my goodness – what a lot of power there is. There may now be nary a Impreza badge in sight, but today this Scooby is still the biggest beast on Bodmin Moor. It packs just as much horsepower as ever (296 bhp) and oodles of torque (300 lb ft) on its way to a 0-60 mph time of 5.2 seconds and it spits it all onto the tarmac through four gargantuan tailpipes. Crucially for all aficionados of styling, a big rear wing and the option of 18” gold alloy wheels and iconic Subaru World Rally Blue paint are back too. It looks stunning and redolent of a proper Impreza of yore and now that it costs some £4,000 less than its predecessor – because of the vagaries of exchange rate witchcraft – the STI is more attractive than ever at £28,995. In fact newly improved practicalities make this STI better to own than ever before. Fuel consumption is now a credible 27.9 mpg; interior tactility is much improved with flourishes of Alcantara fabric and leather, high grade materials, well-tooled switchgear and there’s lots of as-standard equipment. The ride is comparatively comfy too, plus the soundtrack from the burbling 2.5 litre Boxer power-plant is hugely addictive. Oh, and it’s wicked fast. With four doors and a big boot, there’s never been a more exhilarating – or safer – way of getting you and your kith and kin from A to B. Ding - dong: absolutely no need for a bong.

I wave to the chap sitting hunched over the wheel of his shiny newfangled French “crossover vehicle” (read: a hatchback on stilts that costs twice the price) with an air of condescension – fans of the Monarchy will know it as the ‘Royal Wave’; signalling that he may now at last break free from the shackles of the oblique junction, which has kept him prisoner since the road system became dreadfully overwhelmed on this sunny Friday afternoon. But this is not purely a gesture of goodwill. It has a lot more to do with the fact that said sorry commuter has protruding from his car’s rear a modestly-sized two-seater sofa, which is dangling precariously in a way that has the makings of a skit more hilarious than a clown riding a tiny bicycle; and I just want to get a better look. And all of my smugness owes entirely to the new Honda CR-V that I’ve been driving all week, which is a proper fullblooded 4x4 SUV. Yes, it may have been 64
among the first of a wave of SUVs that helped coin the term ‘crossover vehicle’ some twenty years ago, but it’s nothing at all like the detritus of hybrid shapes and styles that litter today’s highways, being as they are just nothing short of a marketing person’s wet dream. Here we have a vehicle that does entirely what it sets out to do and makes no apologies for it. It’s not some wishy-washy, limp-wristed modern day aberration or fad – and I’m looking squarely at you Mr Amateur Furniture removalist – but it is instead a marvel of sense and reason; a paradigm of practicality and a bastion of bloody-mindedness. Every since the first iteration of the BFG (Big Friendly Giant) landed here in 1997, Honda has refined and tweaked the concept only ever-so-slightly, making it just-perfect for every generation thereafter, in wilful defiance of gimmicks and trends. And it’s worked. In the first nine months of last year, the CR-V was the world’s best-selling SUV with nearly 50,000 being sold in Europe alone. People always respond in droves to good, sensible stalwarts for which there are no substitutes: the CR-V is big; not monumentally “Hummer-Big”, just big enough for a two-seater sofa; and a dog; and a load of shopping. Honda quantifies all this space at 589 litres, or with seats folded, 1146 litres. Yet
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JULY/AUGUST 2015
when at the wheel, you are never overly aware of the CR-V’s size, as it is easy to point and park, especially thanks to the as-standard on all models above ‘S’ spec front and rear parking sensors, rear view camera and reverse tilt mirror. And all this comes as no surprise since this SUV is developed, engineered and built in the UK. This attention to the UK is both refreshing and rewarding when it comes to being out and about because the CR-V copes admirably with every surface, providing a comfy ride and proving itself to be an excellent motorway cruiser. Interior build quality is noticeably good and there’s plenty of kit thrown in for the £34,670 this top-spec EX model costs. Now in its fourth-generation, this face-lifted model features a beefier take on the sublime 1.6 litre diesel, which develops nearly 160 bhp and in my case is mated to a new nine-speed automatic gearbox that promises big improvements in both economy and power. All of which is reflected in impressive stats: 55.3 mpg, despite the four-wheel drive system; 139 co2 g/km and 360 Nm of torque. The data is supported in the real world as well: I averaged nearly 50 mpg. So then: it’s a real SUV built for the real world. Our world: the UK. And it’s fast becoming as much a British institution as the monarchy.
The Brand New Volvo XC90 is in our showrooms now.
The all-new XC90 comes from Sweden. It’s bold, yet not brash. It exudes power and confidence with subtlety. Its imposing presence is elegant and understated.
STANDARD FEATURES: • City safety with front collision warning & autobrake • Pedestrian & cyclist detection • Rear collision mitigation • Driver alert control with lane departure warning • Road sign information • Sensus navigation
• 8 speed automatic • LED active bending headlights • Leather faced upholstery • 8˝ active TFT crystal driver information display • Power opening tailgate with handsfree opening
