Top Tips To Keep Your Jewellery Sparkling At All Times Like all beautiful things your jewellery needs a bit of maintenance if you wish to keep it as sparkly as possible wherever you are. So here are a few tips for the care and cleaning of your jewellery when heading off for your holidays.
Care:
When travelling remember to make sure that you separate your sparkly bits in your travel jewellery box as by leaving them on top of each other you would risk them scratching. Precious stones such as diamonds, rubies and sapphires will scratch every metal and a number of other stones in their way. If you would really like to take your jewellery with you T.A.
Henn offers the service to produce replicas of your jewels. They would look like just the real thing but you could relax! Taking fashion jewellery instead of your classic jewellery is a very good option.
For a slightly deeper cleaning - As above but add some fairy liquid to some warm soapy water and soak the jewellery prior to following the quick ‘shine’ tip. For a full cleaning - The best you can do at home remains the jewellery dip (Gold or Silver) in which you plunge your jewellery for about 5-10 min and rinse it with warm water. T.A. Henn carries a full range of cleaning products at the store in Princess Street starting from £3.00 only. We can also restore the metal polish to pristine condition.
Cleaning:
When cleaning your jewellery the trick is to break the bond between the ‘grease’ and the jewel itself with suitable products. For a quick ‘shine’ - Add a bit of tooth paste on a tooth brush, rub your jewellery with it and rinse it afterwards. One tip though, some stones after many years are just held in with dirt so make sure you put the plug in not to loose them down the drain!
P.S: No organic gemstones or oiled gemstones should be treated with any detergents. If in doubt, please come and talk to us.

A leading Wolverhampton-based retail chain is defying the economic downturn and driving forward an extensive business expansion over the coming year. Tile Choice, which now has fifteen stores throughout the central region, has seen a successful year in retail, despite the double dip recession and the chain has started the ball rolling on a quick succession of new store openings in the coming months. Based in the central region, the company is keen to present a positive business message to the rest of the UK and Marketing Manager Lee Rudkin is keen to see the Midlands at the forefront of restoring the declining economy, significantly in the retail sector. “All we tend to hear about in the news at the moment is how businesses of all sizes are struggling, or how the economy continues to decline,” Lee said. “We’re extremely passionate about changing that perception, particularly within the Midlands and are actively working towards bringing business back into the local economy. “As a company, we are working very hard to try and buck the negative trend within the retail sector and have seen some great results 08
because of our dedication to making Tile Choice the market leader.” Tile Choice has seen an impressive 14% year on year sales growth, where other industry competitors have seen their sales decrease. The company put this increase down to an excellent customer service strategy coupled with a well-targeted marketing plan and has also recently been awarded Excellence in Multiple Retailing from The Tile Association, in recognition of their continued success.
“We also aim to continually drive our brand awareness, as being in such a competitive industry, it is vital we stay at the forefront of our customer’s minds, for the right reasons. “We’re extremely proud to be recognised by the TTA for the work our dedicated team have put in to making our business such a success, which in turn has allowed us to continue to expand the company throughout the Midlands and beyond.
“By making careful investments in a bespoke management system, new products, in store displays and staff training, we aim to drive customers into stores and engage in a more personal shopping experience,” Lee continued.
“And our recent sponsorship of Walsall FC and the subsequent branding of the main stand at the ground have seen some very positive feedback from both our domestic and trade customers and we are continuing a programme of activity within the community to further support our local area.”
“As all good retailers know, trade attracts trade and by moving people away from online shopping and back into our shops, we are able to grow our network of stores and therefore bring more business to the surrounding local shopping areas.
The latest store openings in Kettering and Corby were launched in June and like all Tile Choice stores, both locations have been specifically chosen to engage the high footfall and passing traffic in the area.

Lives g in v a S ty ri a h C e c n la Midlands Air Ambu Birthday! st 1 2 r u O ’s It e im T g By Savin
This year fundraisers will be biking, running, climbing, karting, sky diving and even plate smashing to ensure the anniversary year is one to remember.
Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year! 2012 marks 21 years of life saving missions for the rapid response service and the charity would like to say thank you for all the local support received over the last 21 years, ensuring the service has remained operational. The charity completed its first airlift on May 21st, 1991. Since that historic day, the donation-funded service has responded to over 36,000 missions, made possible only by the support of local fundraisers and businesses. The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding and needs to raise over £6 million every year simply to remain operational. To mark the milestone occasion, the charity has created an action packed calendar of events throughout 2012, with something for everyone to get involved in and show their support. 10
Hanna Sebright CEO, said; “It is because of our passionate fundraisers, faithful supporters, loyal volunteers and incredible staff that Midlands Air Ambulance is able to celebrate 21 years of life-saving service and it is with this support that the charity will continue to go on and save countless more lives for many years to come. Over the last 21 years, we have been overwhelmed by your support and generosity. Despite a worrying economic climate, your support has never faltered and now more so than ever Midlands Air Ambulance Charity would like to thank you for your continued support.” There are still plenty of events and ways you can get involved throughout our 21st anniversary year. For details of our full calendar of events visit www.midlandsairambulance.com Who are we?: Midlands Air Ambulance serves the largest air ambulance region in the UK. This includes the communities of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands and Worcestershire; representing a population in

excess of 6 million. Since flying its first mission in 1991, the Charity now responds to more than 3500 mercy missions each year making Midlands Air Ambulance one of the longest established and busiest air ambulance operators in the UK. The Golden Hour: If a patient reaches hospital within 60 minutes of injury, their chances of survival are dramatically increased. The maximum flying time to hospital from anywhere in the region is les than 15 minutes, meaning the charities rapid response is vital to saving lives. The cost: Each year it costs over £6 million just to keep the three charity helicopters operational. The charity receives no funding from the government or National Lottery so relies entirely on the support and generosity of local people and businesses. Our bases: The three air ambulance helicopters are based at Cosford Air Base, near Shifnal Shropshire (covering Shropshire and the West Midlands), Tatenhill Air Base, near Burton-on-Trent Staffordshire (covering Staffordshire and the West Midlands), and Strensham Services on the M5 Worcestershire (covering Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire).

g Jubilee in n in W e e S ts is rt A g Buddin e Reality Plate Designs Becom
Three talented local artists have been presented with unique Wedgwood plates after winning a Jubilee Design a Plate competition organised by the Guildhall Shopping Centre and Wedgwood Visitor Centre. Nine-year-old Frances Duthie was accompanied by her fellow winners, Chloe Timmis (14) and Jill Bramham (54), for the presentation at the Wedgwood Visitor Centre in Barlaston. Their winning designs had fought off competition, from across North Staffordshire, to be made into ceramic reality. After the presentation they had a tour of the Wedgwood Factory and Museum. 12
Ceramic Artist Jon French chose the winners and transferred the designs onto plates. He said: “Frances’ design was very colourful and included everything involved with a Jubilee party, Chloe’s took a fun, humorous approach featuring a corgi wearing a crown, and Jill’s entry was very regal including the red, white and blue in a formal but simple design. “It was very difficult so I tried to make it as simple as I could and tried to look for designs that I knew people had really thought about.” Guildhall Shopping Centre Marketing Manager Anne Graham was on the judging panel which decided the three winners after sifting through more than 800 entries. She said: “We were absolutely amazed and thrilled to get so many entries but it did make it very difficult to choose our winners. “The finished plates looked wonderful on authentic Wedgwood china and we
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2012
hope they will become cherished family heirlooms. “The unique one-off designs will not go into mass production but could become sought-after collectors’ pieces in years to come as they are stamped with the official Wedgwood logo.” Wedgwood Visitor Centre General Manager David McCoy said: “It was great to see such a diverse range of entries to our design competition. “The finished plates really captured the individuality, colour and beauty of each of the winning pieces.” Richard Ralph, Senior Surveyor at DTZ, Managing Agents for the Guildhall said: “Working with the Wedgwood Visitor Centre has been an absolute pleasure and we hope that we will be able to have a further collaboration with them in the future. “The competition really caught the imagination of our customers and I think this has been a successful demonstration of businesses working in partnership”.

oke Kitchen sp e B ic ss la C d e n g si A Well De 20 Years! in le b a n io sh a F e b ll Will Sti “People need not slavishly follow current trends when they are designing the space for the heart of their home. When it comes to kitchens, following fashion can be a waste of money as you are likely to want to change the design far earlier than you had planned,” says Tony Watts. Tony who runs Ikon Designs in Penkridge, with business partner Andrew Harris, design and make bespoke kitchens that sell for between £20,000 and £50,000, but design is just the start of their service. They will take away all of the anxiety, hassle and sleepless nights for their customers by personally managing all the trades required to turn your dream Classic Bespoke Kitchen into a reality. Ikon Designs are one of the few companies that make kitchens from scratch, they start with a stack
of un-machined timber including Oak, Maple and Walnut. “We make kitchens of the highest quality that will last for 20 years or more, that’s one of the reasons why we create classic designs that never go out of date,” states Andrew. And while Ikon Designs favours classic looks, rather than ultramodern, it does use state-of-the-art extras to ensure kitchens are as practical and as efficient as possible. Tony continues to say “The kitchen is the hub of the house and more and more people are encompassing their kitchen into two rooms. In order to achieve this you don’t have to undertake major structural work, simply by carrying the floor finishes and decor through will connect the two areas.” With over 50 years experience between them, Tony and Andrew will give you advice and top tips that apply equally to kitchen designs of all types, irrespective of budget. To
ensure you accomplish your Classic Bespoke Kitchen it’s well worth visiting Ikon Designs stunning showroom and talking to Tony and Andrew. Recipe provided by Chef Jon Young The Barnt Green Inn, Kendal End Road Rednal, Birmingham B45 8PZ Tel: 0121 445 4949
Recipe of the Month Triple Layered Chocolate and Caramel Tart with Chantilly Cream INGREDIENTS • 150g dark chocolate • 200g white chocolate • 6 tbsp of Icing sugar • 600ml whipping cream • 500g caster sugar • 2 Free range eggs • 110g unsalted cold butter • 225g plain flour • 100ml double cream
METHOD

4. Remove pastry from the cling film and using a rolling pin, roll out the pastry so it’s slightly larger than the flan ring. Lightly grease the flan ring so the pastry doesn’t stick to the ring, Place the pastry over the Flan ring and with your fingers lightly press the pastry into the sides of the ring, remove any excess pastry hanging over the edge. Now prick the base of the pastry with a fork.
1. For the Pastry base, you will need a 24cm / 9in loose-bottomed flan ring, start by separating the eggs and add the egg yolks and 2-3 tbsp of cold water into a bowl, stir the mixture together.
5. Preheat the oven to 200c / 400f / gas mark 6, Place the pastry in the oven for approx 20-25mins, Once ready remove from the oven and leave to cool, remove from the flan case.
2. In a Food Processor add all of the plain flour, cold butter and 50g of sugar. Pulse the mixture until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Now add two-thirds of the egg yolk and water mixture and continue to pulse, if the mixture still remains too dry then add more of the yolk/water mixture. Stop once the mixture looks like chunky breadcrumbs.
6. For the Caramel, place 250g of caster sugar into a frying pan and add 4 tbsp of water cook over a medium heat, when the sugar has dissolved turn up the heat and bubble for approx 4mins till you have a caramel colour, remove from heat then carefully stir in 100ml Double cream, pour the Caramel into the pastry tart and place in the fridge for 20mins.
3. On a floured surface turn out the pastry and bring together to make a smooth dough, now cling film and refrigerator for approx 15mins.
7. Half fill a sauce pan with water and bring to the boil on a medium heat, place 150g of white chocolate into a large heat proof bowl and
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2012
place on top of the sauce pan, the steam will start to melt the chocolate, whisk up 400ml of whipping cream until it holds its shape, Separate the whipped cream evenly into 2 bowls and add a tbsp of icing sugar to each bowl. 8. Once the white chocolate has melted remove from the heat and slightly cool, fold in the white chocolate into one of the whipped cream and icing sugar mixtures, once mixed spoon over the top of the caramel layer already in the pastry case, place in the fridge for another 20mins. 9. Now repeat the same method used to make the white chocolate cream and replace the white chocolate with the dark chocolate, now spoon on the dark chocolate cream mixture over the top of the white chocolate cream layer already on the tart. Too garnish the tart, melt down the remaining white chocolate till it has a runny texture and using a spoon drizzle over the top of tart. Place in the fridge for another 20mins and keep chilled until ready to serve. 10. For the Chantilly Cream whip up 200ml of whipped cream and stir in 3-4 tbsp of icing sugar.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2012
f Italy in o e st a T a : ’s io c c a v ra B It’s well known that Wolverhampton has long had a Roman connection. Romulus and Remus, founding fathers of Rome, were suckled by the wolf and Wolverhampton, the great city, has long looked to its football team. So - it is with delight that your editor can draw attention to a happy marriage between venerable institutions. Reflecting this illustrious connection, Bravaccio’s Italian restaurant on Upper Green Tettenhall, is now aiming to score with diners. Under the supervision of legendary Wolves star Steve Bull, the best of Italian cuisine, the warmest of welcomes and the most inviting of interiors combine in a hat trick of benefits for the discerning. Eager for the opportunity to involve himself in the restaurant trade, ‘Bully’ (as he is known to fans) was delighted to perpetuate the values of a long standing family business, Ristorante Romagna, under a new guise and management geared to the increasingly competitive demands of the modern world. His is a ‘hands on’ interest when it comes to ensuring that things are running as they should in the interests of complete customer satisfaction while at the catering end, complete confidence resides with master chef Mario and his enthusiastic staff. Day-to-day operations are ably attended to by restaurant manager Andrew and his assistant, Laura. Your editor is well aware that only too often, his job isn’t all ‘bells, whistles and excitement.’ Often it’s a case of racing against time to beat a deadline - but now and again an opportunity is taken to live the editorial life as one would wish it to be lived. So when I was invited to visit Bravaccio’s in company with stimulating clients, I leaped at the chance. I was anxious, for one thing, to see first-hand how the Tipton and the Tiber have managed their mix. Not so much oil and water as wine and dine, I hoped.
Tettenhall
Accompanying Gisella and myself were well known southern entrepreneur Ted Summers and his delightful assistant Jean Farnham; an academic of some repute. With visitors to the city I’m always keen to convey its merits, which frankly don’t always strike the stranger in the eye. (I’m sure you know what I mean). Tettenhall Green itself drew admiring comments, but I have to say these were qualified along the lines of “Didn’t expect to find somewhere as attractive as this” - to which I replied “Well, it’s certainly not Battersea Power Station, but it’s the best we can manage round here.” The chuckles that followed stayed with us as we entered the restaurant and our good humour was intensified by the pleasant surroundings and warm welcome. My entrepreneur friend, being as one might imagine, a supporter of a Metropolitan team that shall be nameless, was, nonetheless, forced to concede that the Wolves memorabilia that adorns the interior was tastefully deployed and interesting to behold. His assistant, ever the shrewd lady, commented that it was a clever marketing ploy designed to encourage the male of the species to treat his partner to the best things in life. I commented that it seemed a suspiciously sexist remark to me - but I feel I had scored a point. The ladies agreed between themselves that this would be a most attractive lunchtime destination where busy working women could enjoy a little pampered peace and quiet while indulging in healthy well-cooked food. We all agreed that our food was top-line. Starters, from £4.50, were generous in their size and Ted was more than delighted with the tangy ‘penne gorgonzola’: your editor and Gisella happily shared anti pasti emillia romagna. Main courses of cannelloni
and lasagne, salmon steak and chicken served on a bed of creamy risotto followed and were all perfectly cooked, beautifully presented and of goodly portion. With main courses starting at £9 and rising to no more than £20 Bravaccio’s offer excellent value and is endorsed by this writer. Seasonal vegetables accompanied the meal and one has to say that they were splendid. A popular choice for dessert was very rich chocolate cheesecake enthusiastically described by the ladies, after a bottle of Merlot, as ‘scrummy’. Ever the enthusiastic trencherman, Ted delighted in a selection of his favourite cheeses, followed by a jolly fine glass of excellent port. It’s obviously a cliché to say that Bully has scored again in this match, but the Romano - Wulfruna connection is well ahead of the pack and Bravaccio’s is the place to be for fine Italian dining. by Geoff Hall
The best endorsement of the night was impressing Gisella, being of Italian parents and well versed in the art of cooking authentic Italian cuisine, I am glad to report that on leaving the restaurant she was already planning our next visit.

Love of F e th r fo li e D e g la il V The If you thought top quality fine foods were hard to come by, then you’ll be excited to discover The Village Deli. Stocking a fantastic range of world, regional and local foods, along with fresh fruits, vegetables, exclusive bake house breads, rare wines and ales, Codsall’s latest addition has something to delight every foodie. Keen to bring something unique and special to the area, owners Simon and Francesca Jones have succeeded in creating a thoroughly chic and contemporary fine food delicatessen that reflects the demand for quality, excellent ingredients and regional specialities, but that also maintains the old fashioned values of first-rate service and value for money. Simon explains: “We wanted to bring a great selection of regional, local and world foods to our customers so we have carefully selected items from the 28
very best producers to create a range that is truly special. We are passionate about what we do.” “By combining contemporary ideas with traditional values, we feel that we can offer a great service to our customers.” Following on from their success with Village Coffee, the husband and wife team have created the deli to not only provide locals with an unbeatable choice of products, but to act as the perfect ‘pantry’ of ingredients for the menu that’s on offer at the coffee shop. “Our special in-house bakery at the deli produces fine artisan breads. Not only is this great for customers who want a variety of freshly baked loaves, but it’s also ideal for us to use in our coffee shop. We want the deli to act as a larder for what we do at Village Coffee.” Boasting an array of prestigious brand names and great products from Tanners Wine Merchants, Shrewsbury Bake house, Victorian Butter Company and Cheese Cellar, to name a few, means that it really is easy to find that special something for any occasion There’s also a selection of home ware and cookbooks in store too.

Canalside Farm Shop
Trend… e th s ck u B s es n si u B l One Year on & Loca Owners of Canalside Farm Shop, near Stafford, will have cause for celebration on the 1st of August, after a very successful first year’s trading in their new Farm Shop. Since opening the new shop, they have created 4 new full-time jobs and have amazingly seen their visitor numbers double and their turnover triple!
Canalside Farm Shop is located in Great Haywood, just 6 miles from Stafford. It is situated just off the A51, between Stone and Rugeley, or can be accessed via the A518 from Stafford, turning right to Great Haywood (postcode ST18 0RQ). Canalside Farm Shop, Mill Lane, Great Haywood, Stafford. ST18 0RQ For further information please telephone 01889 881747 or log onto the their website www.canalsidefarm.co.uk
Owners Chris and Wendy Barton said: “We are obviously delighted with our first year’s trading, and thrilled by the positive feedback we have been receiving from all of our customers. We have noticed that since opening our Butchery, Bakery and Delicatessen, people are coming to us to do their weekly shop and we are often seeing them return two or three times a week, which is great. In this tough economic climate we really appreciate our customers support and loyalty and wanted to say a big ‘thank you’.” The new Farm Shop is the first phase in a programme of development which has been supported by the Rural Enterprise Grant Scheme. The second phase will include a new Canalside Café, serving locally produced food and drink, and is likely to create an additional 5 new jobs. The family run Farm has been growing its own produce for over 25 years, specialising in strawberries, raspberries, asparagus, tomatoes and courgettes, as well as bedding plants. The new Farm Shop has been a long awaited project, but through the hard work and determination of the owners and their staff, it has become a huge success.

Business S n u R y il m a F a s, b b e W
Webbs is a family run business, now managed by Steve Webb, the son of founder Ken. The business has traded since 1958 and now has a large database of 30,000 customers throughout the midlands. In its early years the company sold a range of goods including furniture, carpets and lighting but electrical goods was the way to go. Webbs has never looked back and has traded through revolutionary change in this fast paced industry, from colour TV and video recorders to today’s LED screens and the latest SMART televisions. Steve Webbs says ”This is a great trade with fantastic new products continually coming to market. The best thing though is matching those products to the right customers. It’s that interaction that gives us all satisfaction and of course most importantly happy customers”. An experienced and enthusiastic team is key to Webbs success. Steve says “I am very proud of the people that work for me. Many have joined straight from school and have been here for over 20 years. That makes for a really warm, friendly atmosphere in the store, and of course a level of experience and expertise that other electrical retailers cannot match”.
sockets, phone points, lighting and wireless security alarms. Wall installation of televisions is big business for Webbs. Steve says “we can hide cables in walls, plaster over, and do whatever the customer wants really. What we have found is that people want somewhere reputable with a high street presence to do this kind of work for them, they can come and talk through exactly what they would like, and we offer free site surveys”. We like to think we offer a level of service that other electrical retailers will struggle to match. We deliver the same day, we respond to service calls the same day and leave loan TVs. We will run 2 TVs out to customers who cannot decide which one they think will suit their room best and let them decide at

home. People love this service and we have 3 generations of families dealing with us. Most of our new customers came to us via recommendation. This year’s hot product for Webbs is SMART TV. Steve explains “we mostly concentrate on Samsungs new range of SMART TVs; they have a full Web browser, really great apps and even a Skype camera. Properly installed they are a fantastic product, and they are beautifully styled. I would urge customers to come in and have a proper demonstration. This range of TVs really does represent the future of television”. So Webbs will continue to do as it always has deliver the latest technology with old fashioned service and courtesy to happy customers.

in their games with an extra 30 to 40 yards being added in distance. It’s not just local people who are coming to the academy we have players coming from Cardiff, Leicester, Lincoln and recently a player who attends Georgia State University in America.
Focus Golf Training Academy is owned by PGA Professional and European Tour Coach Michael Beaumont and is based at the prestigious Beau Desert Golf Club near Cannock. Michael said “I can’t believe how busy we have got in such a short time”. Michael identified a gap in coaching programmes which has been filled with the help of Zenolink. Zenolink is a 3D bio-mechanical programme which, identifies areas of weakness in the golf swing and addresses these weaknesses through PST’s (Progressive Skills Training). In fact the response to Zenolink has been so favourable that Focus Golf Training Academy was invited to become the official UK partner of Zenolink, an offer that was readily accepted. All of the players using the Zenolink programme have seen increased performance 38

We are often asked what age is the best for youngsters to start to learn, our youngest juniors are aged 5 which, seems to be an ideal age to start. Everything you need to get your game going in the right direction.

f Need’ o s e im T in y it n u m m o ‘Helping the Fire C The Fire Fighters Charity is the UK’s leading provider of services that enhance quality of life for serving and retired fire service personnel and their families. Our vision is to make a positive difference by supporting people in the fire and rescue community when they are in need. Our mission is to place beneficiaries at the heart of everything we do, ensuring that the fire and rescue community can rely on The Fire Fighters Charity as its primary point of contact for advice and support. We aim to provide practical assistance and solutions to make a real difference to the lives of members of the fire service community. Our Beneficiary Support Service offers a free confidential and impartial helpline for the fire and rescue community - providing advice and support on a broad range of issues - as well as having a nationwide network of professional staff and trained volunteers available to help locally. Our three centres in Devon, Cumbria and West Sussex offer rehabilitation programmes to serving and retired members of the fire and rescue community, as well 42
as recuperation breaks that provide the chance to relax in peaceful and tranquil surroundings, which can aid emotional recovery following illness, injury, or bereavement. It costs £9m every year to meet the needs of our beneficiaries, and with no government funding, we rely entirely upon donations from the general public and the fire and rescue community. In order for us to improve our services year on year, it is vital for us to have a reliable source of income that we can depend on. There are lots of ways that you can support us. You can donate to The Fire Fighters Charity by joining our Regular Giving scheme, playing The Fire Fighters Lottery, leaving a gift in your will, recycling your unwanted clothing and textiles, or by making a one-off donation. With everything
from Car Washes to Ladies Driving Challenges and overseas treks to bake sales, we also have a range of events for everyone to get involved with!
Why donate to The Fire Fighters Charity? Across the County, from Kidsgrove and Longnor in the north, to Wombourne and Kinver in the south, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is at the heart of your local community. The Service works tirelessly with its partners to make your County a safer place to live and work. Your local fire fighters do all they can to improve the lives and wellbeing of everyone in Staffordshire, and in particular they want to reduce deaths and serious injuries caused by accidental fires in the home. Through a mixture of pioneering campaigns and home fire risk checks, they’re doing just that!
Any amount you can afford helps us to provide practical assistance and solutions to make a real difference to the lives of members of the fire service community. Donating just £6 a month via our Regular Giving scheme allows us to take advantage of the Government’s Gift Aid policy, so we can claim an extra 25% (£1.50) at no cost to you or the Charity! And as little as £50 allows a fire service employee and their family to attend a day’s recuperation at one of our centres following cases of injury, illness, or bereavement.

gen Golf a sw lk o V : e n O in le o H
The original Golf GTI was genesis for the hot hatch concept and, as Rob Taylor writes, it remains to this day a standard bearer for the market it created. For over 30 years the Volkswagen Golf GTI has been the hot hatch daddy; the benchmark for all other contenders who dare compete in its gene pool. Now in its sixth incarnation - an as-tested 2 litre TSI 5 door DSG model - the classic formula of stylish design verve and famous German engineering is more potent than ever. Its legendary status is deserved but, incredibly, its conception was anything but immaculate. The GTI story did not, as some revisionists would have you believe, begin as some wondrous intersection of providential timing and engineering alchemy, it took endeavour and vision. Originally started as a side project by a team of Volkswagen engineers in their spare time at the beginning of the 1970s, the objective was to make a 46

GTI by Rob Taylor
‘Sport Golf’ with an emphasis on handling and dynamic finesse. Volkswagen grudgingly accepted the idea and over 1.7 million units later things have never been better.
RETURN TO FORM The mark six version is not only better than all of its contemporary class rivals, but it trumps its immediate forbear too, the mark five from 2005. This is no mean feat as the previous version was probably the best GTI since the original Giugiaro-styled legend: a proper GTI, unlike the mark four which was a bit of an overweight GIT. At first sight there are few clues to the GTI’s sporting prowess; only a widened lower grille, twin exhaust tailpipes, discreet rear spoiler, side-skirts and cool “telephone dial” 18” Monza alloys distinguish it from its underpowered siblings. But this is key to its enduring appeal, as it can be driven understatedly into every social strata without fanfare or alarm. Whether tip-toeing across the gravel outside a stately manor house in the responsible hands of a country gent or looning around a race circuit with wanton abandon, the GTI is at home, never lacking proper attire.
LEADER OF THE PACK An intelligent choice in a hot hatch market that confuses machismo with vulgarity and values power over poise, the GTI has never been over-endowed when it comes to top trump statistics. But in the real world, on real roads with crests and bumps and other traffic, it’ll always be quick enough. At its heart is one of the most up-to-date engines, the turbocharged 2 litre TSI. A derivative of the acclaimed TFSI unit, it produces 207bhp and gives a 0-62 mph time of 6.9 seconds with the DSG gearbox.
Top speed is limited to 148 mph, but to concentrate on these numbers alone is to miss the point: what brings out the devil in you is in the engineering details. This is due in no small part to an excellent chassis which offers the driver adjustment of pneumatic dampers to provide ‘comfort’, ‘normal’ and ‘sport’ driving modes. The fun comes from carrying speed through the corners, exploiting the chassis.
TOP-NOTCH TECH Further to this there is a new electronic limited slip differential known as XDS and the optional DSG gearbox, which shifts imperceptibly from gear to gear
quickly and smoothly; a real boon when either lazily floating around town or thrashing down B-roads. Loaded with kit that includes satellite navigation, airconditioning, a reversing camera and a sound system of concert hall quality, the Golf’s cabin has a premium feel to it: everything is beautifully tactile and solid. The instrumentation is bathed in soft, ambient blue lighting and the seats - clad in ‘Interlagos’ tartan print in a nod to the 1970s original - are reassuringly comfortable. Prices start at £25,060 (£27,175 as tested) and a special ‘Edition 35’ example, designed to commemorate 35 years of the GTI, is now also available. What a remarkable 35 years it’s been.

sses to adopt ne si bu l ca lo s ge ur on pt Brindley Wolverham al of the new V40 iv rr a e th of e ev e th on a clean conscience
Volvo dealership Brindley Wolverhampton’s corporate sales team is urging local companies to adopt a cleaner conscience by choosing company cars with Drive-E technologies after the brand achieved third place in the top 20 fleet brands for ecodriving at its specialist business centres. Now in its fifth year, the company carsector dedicated magazine and website BusinessCar’s survey rates the top 20 fleet brands for eco-effectiveness. The BusinessCar survey provides valuable information for fleet operators looking for the most fuel-efficient vehicles with the best CO2 which translates into both fuel pump savings and less benefit in kind (BIK) payments. Thanks to fuel efficient vehicles, which now include 14 versions across the brand’s two sub-100g/ km 2013 models - the C30 and the all-new V40, Volvo leapt into the top three in the rating and recorded a massive 8.8% below its EU target. An increasing number of businesses are looking at ways to reduce costs and selecting more fuel and taxefficient vehicles for company car fleets is an obvious choice which translates to cleaner motoring. Brindley Wolverhampton, located at Wolverhampton Road, Codsall, has seen demand for vehicles with Drive-E technologies continually rise and the arrival of the V40 this month (July) is expected to boost sales of its more fuel efficient vehicles even further. 48
• Volvo achieves top three place in BusinessCar Survey’s eco-driving league • Drive-E technologies can mean savings at the fuel pump and less benefit in kind (BIK) payments for company car drivers • Brindley Wolverhampton urges local business to consider cleaner vehicles and save money Says the dealership’s business sales manager Neal Shaw: “We are seeing more and more user choosers selecting vehicles with reduced personal tax implications (Benefit in Kind) which inevitably means driving cars which are more fuel efficient and emit less CO2. The benefits can extend beyond the first year, for example, the new V40 D2 with a CO2 rating of just 94g/ km, stays in the lowest tax band for the first two years. Fleet managers and local bosses can also save money with Employers National Insurance contributions on the lower CO2 cars as well as lower fuel costs.”
they are powered by conventional means, electric or a combination such as the new plug-in hybrid. An incredible 330+ cars across the Volvo range now fall under160g/ km CO2 reflecting the brand’s commitment to fuel efficient driving.
Using data from a number of sources, including the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), BusinessCar identified 10 categories, each marked out of five to give a grand total out of 50, which was then doubled to reach its percentage score.
• V40 D2 Manual (with 205 tyres) - 78.5mpg & 94g/km
Volvo was the survey’s biggest climber over last year with a 74 per cent rating behind winners Peugeot (82 per cent) and Volkswagen (80 per cent) but achieved a higher rating than rivals Audi (70 per cent), Mercedes-Benz (34 per cent) and BMW (68 per cent). The Drive-E name follows on from Volvo’s DRIVe-badged vehicles. Originally fitted to those models that offered the best environmental performance in their respective segments, the new Drive-E is now the suite of innovative technologies to include low emitting vehicles whether

S60,V60, S80 and V70 models with the D2 engine are available with the Powershift gearbox all sub 120g/km for CO2. Environmental and economic factors are not compromised as the automatic gearboxed cars deliver exactly the same fuel economy and emissions as the class-leading manual ‘boxed variants.
