I often get asked by my clients how the relatively new main residence nil rate band works and also the implications of gifting money or property to their children so I thought I would look at the consequences of both. Main Residence nil Rate Band This came into effect for anyone who died after 5th July 2015 who owned their home and is passing the property to a direct descendent. A direct descendant is defined as a child, grandchild or other lineal descendant (including a spouse or civil partner of a lineal descendant – including their widow, widower or surviving civil partner). A child will include step, adopted and foster 4

children and also a child where the individual was appointed as a guardian or special guardian for that child when they are under 18.

the maximum available amount of the RnRB will increase yearly and for deaths in the following tax years it will be:

Nephews, nieces, siblings and other relatives are not included.

• £125,000 in 2018/19

The home must be left to direct descendants so that it becomes part of the beneficiaries’ estate following the death. Where a home is left to beneficiaries who are a mixture of direct descendants and other individuals, the value of the home must be apportioned between all of them.

• £175,000 in 2020/21

An estate will also be entitled to the Residential Nil Rate Band (RNRB) when an individual has downsized to a less valuable home or sold / given away their home after 7th July 2015. Gifts with reservation will qualify as HMRC treats the home as being included in the estate. The RNRB may therefore be available for that home if it is given away to a direct descendant.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | DECEMBER 2018

• £150,000 in 2019/20 In later years, the maximum RNRB will increase in line with inflation (based on the Consumer Prices Index). For married couples and civil partners, any unused RNRB can be transferred when the surviving spouse or civil partner dies after 5th April 2017, regardless of when first death occurred GiftinG Money oR PRoPeRty to childRen New research from Direct Line has found that 6.9 million people (20 per cent) have given their children “their inheritance” early in order to avoid or reduce the amount of inheritance tax payable on their estate.

Whilst this is a sure fire way of reducing this tax burden, providing they survive for 7 years, it does come with drawbacks. Firstly, it means that they have lost control or access to that money or property and, should their circumstances change in the future, it could be that their standard of living is adversely affected. Secondly, with today’s society, we are seeing an increased number of divorces and once children have been gifted money or property it becomes part of their estate which is then taken into consideration when a divorce settlement is reached. Historically, the use of Flexible Trusts has been the method of source to try and protect what they have safely in the knowledge that if their children do get divorced or are made bankrupt, part or all of their inheritance is not lost however this does entail losing control of that capital. So what are the alternatives if they want to protect their estate but still retain control and more importantly access to capital if required? We have for many clients recommended products that qualify for Business Property Relief (BPR) as this gives two great benefits: 1. You have to survive for only 2 years and not 7 if gifting or investing in a trust. 2. You still retain control and access to your capital.

Should you wish to find out more about reducing your liability to Inheritance Tax please feel free to contact us.

CHARITY CHALLENGE TEAM RAISE £13,500

The Lord Bilston Team celebrate raising 13,500 for Compton Care - Image credit Paul Berry

In July 2018 a group of eighteen friends took on their most extreme fundraising challenge to date. The Lord Bilston Big Challenge team ‘Carried the Load’ as they transported 2 members of staff from Wolverhampton charity Compton Care a total of 140 miles. The group carried Compton Care Nurse Specialist Debbie Smith and Marketing Manager Grace Lee from Swansea to Wolverhampton on the back of a tandem bike, in a stretcher and in a canoe in a gruelling challenge that lasted 25.5 hours. Group leader Brendon Turner was inspired to take on the challenge in honour of his late father, Lord Bilston Dennis Turner, who received support from Compton Care following his cancer diagnosis in 2014. Mr Turner commented: “We know the staff at Compton do fantastic work caring for people who have been diagnosed with an incurable illness. They carry a load for so many people at their most stressful and sad times, which can be really difficult, so on this occasion we wanted to ‘Carry the Load’ for them.

He added: “I am just keeping my Dad’s memory alive in a positive way, whilst at the same time helping out a really caring and important charity.” In a special celebration event held on Saturday 29th September Mr Turner announced the total raised from the Carry the Load challenge to be over £13,500. Compton Care Marketing Manager, and one of the staff members who was carried as part of this year’s challenge, Grace Lee commented: “This is a truly incredible amount which will change the lives of so many local people. This amount will fund the equivalent of 119 patients receiving personal care and support in their own homes. Since starting their fundraising journey in 2014 the dedicated group have raised over £77,000 for Compton. Ms Lee added: “We cannot thank the challenge team enough for what they have done for Compton. We simply would not exist were it not for groups of people like this who choose to give up their time and their money to ensure that local people who are living with incurable conditions are able to access the care and support they need and deserve.” For more pictures and videos from the Carry the Load challenge please visit twitter.com/lordbilston

Create Your Own Nativity Scene this Christmas… Penkridge Market, near Stafford has announced that they will be holding a fantastic new Christmas event on Saturday 8th December. Visitors will be able to create their very own nativity scene, with real-life animals, when ‘The Farm on Wheels’ bring their mobile farm to the Market. The children will be able to dress up as Mary and Joseph, whilst having photos in their own nativity scene, with the friendly farm animals such as donkeys and sheep. Why not take a photo and create your very own family Christmas card? The event will take place from 10am – 12 Midday, and is free of charge.

12

There will also be a wide variety of stalls selling a range of festive treats, gifts, toys and crafts, as well as trees, wreaths and decorations. The Market will be open from 9am to 3pm, giving you plenty of time to get everything on your shopping list. Admission and parking are free, and with an indoor market too, it’s a great place to shop, whatever the weather.

If it’s your turn to cook the Christmas lunch then there is no better place to buy your Turkey than at the Market’s Christmas Poultry auctions which are being held on Tuesday 18th and Friday 21st December. It is anticipated that there will be around 300 oven ready birds in each auction with entries expected to include turkeys, geese, ducks and chickens, all of which have been reared on local farms. These sales are open to the public and commence at 11am and are an excellent way to buy a quality turkey for your Christmas table.

And if all of that food shopping makes you hungry, there will be a wide range of catering stalls, as well as the Old Deanery Farm Cafe, who will be serving hot drinks and festive food, including a traditional Turkey Lunch with all the trimmings.

The Market is located in the centre of Penkridge, which is just 7 miles from Stafford; 7 miles from Cannock and 10 miles from Wolverhampton and is easily accessible from the A449, A5 and M6 (junctions 12 & 13). Parking and admission is free.

The day itself brings with it our Family Communion at 10.30 where we ask the children to bring one of their gifts from Santa so we can all enjoy and perhaps indulge in remembering our own childhood, along with singing happy birthday to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Eating out over the Festive Season THERE’S SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL ABOUT A PERFECTLY PREPARED MEAL There’s something very special about a perfectly prepared meal, served with panache in beautiful and comfortable surroundings. It can help celebrate in a very unique way, any special time of year. Christmas is of course the most special time of the whole calendar, and eating out over the season, a perfect and traditional way to enjoy the festival with all your family and friends.

happy the whole evening through. Party bookings of this sort are usually tremendous bargains and can be about the best value for money in dining out, it is possible to find. Of course, the very best value for money is wining and dining out on Christmas Day. This is becoming more popular with every passing year. It offers several very real advantages. It relieves at least one member of the family of all the work. It doesn’t require clearing up afterwards. It allows the lonely the opportunity of enjoying this festive meal in company. And because it is prepared by professionals, it is always a meal worthy of the occasion and a joy to eat in itself. Christmas Day menus are well worth the booking. Normally several courses of mouth-watering traditional foods are offered, with one or two luxury alternatives for those with special dietary needs or simply a requirement to have something a little different for once. Diners can be sure too that the wines ordered to accompany the food will be of excellent quality and served at just the perfect temperature.

Caterers, no matter how excellent at other times of the year, still pull out all the stops at Christmas. Special menus are devised. Special meals are created. Restaurants, whether standing alone, or part of pubs, clubs and hotels, are decorated in the traditional, seasonal way. Party bookings are particularly welcome, and special entertainments are put on, to help the party mood go with a swing.

Of course all this costs a little bit more. However, when you think of the service that is provided, not to mention the cooking and clearing away, really the Christmas Day meal is probably the ultimate bargain of all.

There are several good gastronomic ways of marking the coming of this very gastronomic season. You can have a traditional Christmas lunch, most restaurants put these on daily for several weeks before Christmas actually arrives. The menu usually comprises Christmas fare with all the trimmings, with thoughtful additions for those who might just prefer something else. This provides an ideal opportunity to entertain business colleagues, clients, customers, friends or relatives, with an intimate, festive repast. Then there are the evenings. Party bookings enable groups of colleagues, entire departments, whole firms, complete family groups, associations, club members, or just good friends, to gather together and enjoy a memorable evening out. Special menus, seasonal trimmings, discos, bands and groups, are laid on by caterers to please their guests and keep them 24

SI Cannock & District Christmas - a time for giving the refuge for women victims of domestic abuse. The gifts included things such as clothing, toys, books, toiletry sets: the things we all love to receive on Christmas Day, though for these women and their children the gifts will mean rather more as they will all be without any other family members at that time. It has become tradition for Club members to provide and cook a 3 course Christmas meal during December for those people who use Mill Street soup kitchen in Cannock - some of them are homeless, for all of them this will be their only hot meal that day, possibly that week.

And that is exactly what Cannock Soroptomists will be doing again this year. There are many things the Club members do throughout the year to help women and children locally and globally, but Christmas is a time of year when it is especially good to remember and help those in need. At the end of November members decorated a tree at St Luke’s church as part of the Tree Festival when many local groups were involved in this lovely community event. Members all donated gifts which are wrapped and given to the women and children who will spend Christmas living in

Stafford Coastal Cruising Club Beat the Winter Blues Have you ever fancied chartering a Yacht and sailing off into the sunset? Now you can start from Stone! Of course, you could set out at sunrise..either way there is now a new opportunity for you to take the first big step to becoming an RYA-qualified sailing yacht or motor boat skipper. Stafford Coastal Cruising Club (SCCC) has teamed up with Lichfield-based Splash Adventure to provide evening classes for the RYA Day Skipper Theory course at Oulton, Stone. The two-hour classes will start in January 2019 and run through until June with a break for Easter and Bank Holiday. SCCC Members will enjoy a 10% discount on the course fee (normally £380). The course is designed to teach complete beginners a wide range of traditional navigation skills, safety and weather forecasting, as well as the use of GPS chart plotters, VHF radio and other modern electronic aids to navigation and safety which are now a large part of skippering a boat. SCCC’s Commodore, Phil Osman said, “This new partnership between SCCC and Splash Adventure marks an exciting stage in the development of our club, providing new opportunities to study locally for RYA qualifications. Instead of sending cards to each other at Christmas Cannock Soroptimists give a donation to the Soroptimist International President’s Appeal which this year is Water, Women and Leadership. Soroptimists celebrate themselves, too and this year their Christmas Celebration will be held at The Barns on December 13th. They will enjoy Christmas Fare and will be entertained by singers ‘Voices of Tantallon’. More information on this project the work of SI can be found on the website: www.sigbi.org/cannock-and-district; on Facebook www.facebook.com/SICannock; or on the twitter account @sicannock also planning for the RYA Day Skipper Practical course to be offered in partnership with Splash Adventure so that anyone who has completed the theory course will be fully prepared to charter their own yacht”. Stafford Coastal Cruising Club members have yachts and motor launches located at various bases in the UK and overseas, but you do not have to own a boat to join the club. The club regularly arranges for members to charter yachts and had a group undertaking a Summer Cruise in the Solent in August 2018 aboard the yacht shown above. In addition to training and sailing opportunities the club meets locally every fortnight over the winter months to provide an active programme of talks and events with a maritime theme. Single membership of the club costs £25 pa, family membership £30. FOR ALL YOUR RESIN BOND, BLOCK PAVING & TARMAC DRIVEWAY REQUIREMENTS The appearance of your driveway can create an impression about your home and lifestyle. An attractive driveway may add value to your home or provide a focal point for passers-by. Clearstone specialise in three main types of driveway. Our Block Paved Driveways can be laid in any design or colour, depending on your requirements, they are durable and long lasting. Or you could give your drive that stylish designer look with a NEW resin bound driveway. If a classic look is more your style, then we can also provide you with a high quality tarmac drive, the choice is yours. Resin bond gravel driveways in Staffordshire are becoming increasingly popular because they drastically improve the look of existing driveways. There are two main types of resin surfaces, and they both work on the principle of combining coloured stone aggregate with resin. A resin bonded product is where the driveway is laid with these two ingredients separately. The resin is painted over the surface, stone is scattered over this, and then another layer of resin is added to set it in place. Resin bound is where the aggregate and resin are mixed together in a special concrete mixer, before being trowelled into place, and spread to a uniform thickness.

Both methods work well, and the results can be spectacular, long lasting and hard-wearing. There is no need for costly, disruptive excavation; resin bound surfacing is applied to your existing driveway surface, and we deliver a finish that’s unmatched by any other surface, on driveways, patios and pathways. It’s can be applied to almost any solid surface including tarmacadam, concrete, block paving even flagstones, leaving you with a very attractive, natural look, and a smooth finish for years to come. Using resin bound surfacing, a highly durable surface choice for pathways and drives, resin bound driveways will save you money on maintenance, and are extremely eco-friendly. Mouse Facts by Penkridge Pest Control Ltd The House Mouse, and sometimes the Long-Tailed Field Mouse are found in homes and buildings as they seek the warmth and shelter for nesting sites and food. House mice are active all year round, which means you could find them invading your home or business at any time. These nibbling nuisances have a compulsive need to gnaw in order to keep their incisor teeth worn down to a constant length. Electric cables, water and gas pipes, packaging and woodwork may all be seriously damaged by mice - many instances of electrical fires and floods have been attributed to them. Mice have been known to spread some nasty diseases to humans such as Salmonella, Listeria, which can cause food poisoning. It is important to get rid of mice quickly, as Mice are adaptable, highly mobile and breed rapidly - this combination can make mouse control a difficult task for the untrained individual. If you need any treatment against mouse’s in your property please contact Tim on 07519 613196

CLEARSTONE DRIVEWAY CLEANING RESTORE YOUR DRIVEWAY TO ITS FORMER GLORY

Clearstone Driveway Cleaning are a driveway cleaning company that specialises in power washing. Our business is based in Cannock, and working in the surrounding Staffordshire area. We have the expert knowledge to restore your surface to its former glory. First impressions count and with the great British weather driveways can quickly gather moss, ingrained dirt and lichen. Over the last 10 years, many people have had a lovely patio or hard standing areas to gain more space and to keep maintenance to a minimum. However while these look exceptional when they are firstly completed they can without the proper upkeep soon become quite abandoned looking, this is where we can come to your rescue and get your surface gleaming again. If you are thinking about Driveway or Patio cleaning in Staffordshire, then Clearstone Driveway Cleaning are the answer! What Our Customers Say: My driveway had accumulated a vast amount of foreign bodies, from grass growing in between the blocks to a rather nasty cover off moss. Clearstone cleaned it all off and left me with a pristine driveway again, I won’t leave it years before I call them again. Mr R.Ward Walsall Initially I just wanted my patio cleaning as it was looking very tired, but after Clearstone made such a good job of it, my husband had them do the car parks of both his businesses. I can’t believe what a difference it makes. Mrs E Edwards Stafford Please contact us for your free no obligation quote. Dark Flowers It’s the brightly coloured flowers in the garden that first catch our eyes but sometimes it’s the dark, smouldering beauty of the deep reds and purples that catch our hearts. There’s something beguiling about these dark beauties that makes us look again, their velvety colour urges us to touch them. I for one have become beguiled by them and always seek them out at the nursery or plant fair.

The brilliant thing is, some of our favourite and easiest to grow garden plants have varieties in these deep, smouldering colours as well as some more exotic species you can try. Here’s some of my favourites. For the cottage garden Aquilegia Black Barlow is the deepest red, nearly black with spiky double flowers. The Black Hollyhock (Alcea rosea Nigra) with its large dark red flowers with silky petals is great grown against a wall or fence to add height.

There’s a hardy geranium for every situation in the garden and it’s no surprise that there are some lovely dark flowered ones as well. “Lily Lovell”, “Samobor” and “Our Pat” are great for a shady spot. There are several dark flowered cornflowers. The best is the maroon coloured “Jordy” who reblooms from May to October if cut back hard each time flowering stops. The variety “Black Sprite” is smaller and in my experience weaker growing. Penstemons are long flowering favourites that we used to treat as tender, but these days they survive all but the coldest winters. The varieties “Raven” and “Blackbird” both have flowers the colour of port wine.

Less hardy is the Chocolate Cosmos, so called because of the chocolate scent and the deep dark brown-red of the flowers. These grow from tubers like a dahlia and are probably best dug up and kept in a greenhouse over winter. They will survive most winters outdoors, but they will be very late to come into leaf and even later to flower. Speaking of Dahlias, these have perhaps the biggest choice of dark flowers going. I love “Nuit D’ete” (“Summer Night”) and “Dark Spirit” especially.

Another plant to add height in the garden is Angelica gigas which has large heads of beetroot red flowers in summer. Angelicas are called “monocarpic” by botanists meaning they die after flowering. Not to worry though as they are easily replaced by seed which should be collected as soon as it starts to fall from the plant and sown immediately. The seedlings will pop up in spring.

Definitely not hardy is Aeonium Schwartzkopf which is a branching succulent with almost black petals. It can’t stand any frost, so I bed it out in June and pot it up again in October to be kept in a greenhouse or light windowsill over winter. There is also an Arum Lily (Zantedeshia) named Schwartzkopf with lovely, waxy black flowers. These are also not quite hardy and are best kept in a greenhouse over winter.

Astrantias (Masterwort) are esteemed for their long flowering period and tough constitutions. There are lots of deep ruby red varieties available; all are equally good; look out for “Gill Richardson” and “Hadspen Blood” particularly. Astrantias will self-seed but these will be a mixture of dark red, pink or white flowered seedlings. Those with dark red or black coloration on their fresh leaves are most likely to have dark red flowers.

Dark flowers can be grown on masse, but this can look a little sombre, so I liven them up with touches of white, cream, yellow or bright orange flower in the border. Good plants for this are Sisyrhynchium striatum, anthemis, tulip or achillea.

Irises are one of the glories of the late spring and early summer border and always the stars of the Chelsea Flower Show. There are some really dark flowered ones available among the scented bearded Iris. My favourites are the midheight “Black Tie Affair” and “Deep Black” both of which have deep, inky violet flowers unfurling from black buds. Bearded Iris need a sunny spot and good drainage in winter. The knobbly rhizomes they grow from must be planted with their tops out of the soil and exposed to the sun. 32 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | DECEMBER 2018

Win tickets for the 2019 National Shire Horse Show

Organisers of the world’s largest gathering of Shire horses have announced the date for the 2019 National Shire Horse Show. The Shire Horse Society will return to Staffordshire Showground for the fourth time – staging its annual show from 22nd to 24th March 2019. Expected to attract around 250 pedigree Shire horses from across Europe, the show is the flagship event for the organisation which is the only charity dedicated to the protection, promotion and improvement of the Shire horse. Visitors can watch the iconic breed in all its finery, with horses put through their paces in-hand, ridden and in-harness. There’s the chance to find out more about Shire horses and their role throughout history. Plus, the popular stable tours introduced for the first time in 2018 will return in 2019. New for 2019’s show is a dedicated Food Hall – selling artisan and speciality foods – which will complement the wide range of trade stands that provide browsing and shopping opportunities for visitors. “We’re pleased to announce the date for our 2019 National Shire Horse Show and are looking forward to returning to Staffordshire Showground from 22nd to 24th March – our fourth visit to the venue,” said Shire Horse Society secretary Victoria Clayton. “This event is the opportunity not only for our members to compete and win prizes in their classes, and to qualify for the Horse of the Year Show, it’s also the chance for us to raise the profile of the Shire horse, which is currently regarded as an ‘at risk’ breed by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. “It’s really important that we continue our valuable work to support and protect the breed, which was in danger of dying

out completely just a few decades ago, and we look forward to welcoming lots of members, supporters and visitors to our flagship event once again.” The Shire horse has played a huge role in the history of Great Britain, but as a breed it is still regarded as an endangered species, with fewer than 300 pedigree Shire horse foals registered every year. The Shire Horse Society’s National Show gives visitors the chance to get up close to the gentle giants of the horse world and help secure the breed’s future, added Victoria. Tickets are now on sale on the Shire Horse Society’s website www.shire-horse.org.uk This month we’ve once again teamed up with the organisers to offer the chance to win a pair of tickets to this great event. SAVOURY - CANAPES

Sweet potato scones with roquefort, fig jam, walnuts and roast duck breast. Serve this before lunch if you’re having drinks first - goes well with red wine. Serves 8 - Prep and cooking time Approx 1.5 hours

INGREDIENTS

2 sweet potato 200g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 tablespoon natural yoghurt Pinch of Maldon sea salt Cold butter diced 2 Duck breast 4 Figs 50g caster sugar 8 Walnuts 100g Roquefort

METHOD

Bake the sweet potatoes until very soft then cut in half whilst they are still warm and scoop out the flesh. Mix flour salt cold butter chunks to make breadcrumbs - mix in the sweet potato once cold and add in baking powder and yoghurt then mix well into a dough - roll out dough and cut into shapes. Egg wash the tops and bake for 12 minutes. Whilst the scones are baking slice the figs and mix with the sugar in the small pan and gently warm until the figs break down. Add a little water to help the sugar dissolve. Season and dry fry the duck breasts skin side down pouring the fat off into a jar. Now roast the breasts for about 15 minutes in the oven on 180oC - allow to rest for 10 minutes. Once your scones are out the oven and cooled slice them in half and fill them with your fig jam, roquefort, walnuts and then slice of duck breast -- serve immediately. Serve before your Christmas lunch with a nice red wine - for advice on using this recipe email mike@takefood.co.uk

SWEET - PUDDING

Banana bread pudding with spiced rum whipped cream Something different for pudding this year? Serves 8 - Prep and cooking time Approx 1.5 hours

INGREDIENTS

Banana bread 120 g of unsalted butter 240g caster sugar 1 beaten egg 3 bashed up ripe bananas 240g plain flour 2 tsp of baking powder 1 pinch of ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp of fresh grated nutmeg Pinch of salt 120g of milk 2 tsp of vanilla (optional) 40g of raisins Spiced cream Bottle of spiced rum 50g of caster sugar 300ml of double cream

METHOD

For the banana bread cream the butter and sugar together in the food mixer with the paddle or K beater until light and fluffy. Then add in all the other ingredients and beat on high for about 20 seconds or until well combined. Grease the loaf tin and line with parchment paper, pour in the batter and bake for 1 hour at 170oC Whisk the double cream, sugar and rum together until thick and then serve with your banana bread whilst its still warm. If you really like rum you can poke lots of holes into the top pf the bread and pour over some rum for the bread to soak up whilst cooling - not too much though as it will be soggy. Serve with a glass of spiced rum or advocaat - for advice on using this recipe email mike@takefood.co.uk

We offer a complete jewellery restoration service for that item that has just been loved too much and is tired. For examples see before and after photographs on our gallery at www. djmbespokejewellery.co.uk I currently design and make jewellery for our retail jewellers Emporium 13, based in Sedgley, West Midlands. The shop has been established over 10 years and offers a diverse selection of jewellery not usually found on the high street.

We are a small independent jewellery design centre based in Cannock Staffordshire.

Contact me personally on 01543 328885 or email sales@djmbespokejewellery.co.uk for all your jewellery based questions I would be delighted to speak further with regards to any of our services.

I have worked in the Jewellery business for 18 years specialising in bespoke handmade designs providing that very personal approach from the outset by way of private consultation. This personal yet surprisingly affordable service enables the client’s involvement from concept to completion. I am proud to guarantee that every commission I make is a handmade, one off, unique design. We liaise with the client enabling them to translate their designs and thoughts and I can provide initial concept drawings where required. Over the years I have found that sentiment can often outweigh the intrinsic value of the specific piece of jewellery. In respect of this I regularly use clients old, or perhaps inherited unwearable pieces and remodel using original stones and precious metal in order to carry that sentiment through to something current, wearable and unique. A popular area with regards this service is the refashioning of inherited loved ones wedding bands and/or engagement ring which, I have found, regularly sit at the bottom of a drawer gathering dust. Clients are often surprised at the designs created from yesteryear pieces and are excited to discover that they could wear loved ones jewellery as a new exclusive designs. Clients are frequently surprised at the affordability of the service. How to keep your dog safe and happy this Christmas The season of joy and goodwill is nearly upon us. Christmas is a very exciting and busy time for us all, but it’s important we don’t forget about our four-legged friends in the midst of all the excitement! Their usual home environment is filled with trees, flowers and other decorations and there are odd noises such as crackers and fireworks. Your routine is likely to change and there may be unfamiliar visitors coming to the house. Here are a few top tips to keeping dogs safe and happy this festive season.

The Christmas Tree

Purchasing and decorating a Christmas tree in your home is a big part of celebrating this wonderful time of year. However, did you know that real trees can cause your dog irritation due to the mildly toxic oils contained within them?

stomach, this effectively runs a thread through the intestines and causes a linear foreign body which can be extremely serious! Your dog may also get a nasty shock if they chew through the electrical cable for your Christmas lights!

Festive Foods

To avoid this becoming a problem for your pet, you can purchase a smaller tree and raise it off the floor, or alternatively opt for a fake tree.

We all love to tuck into a tasty meal, treats and sweets during Christmas, but remember that certain foods aren’t good for your dog to consume.

If you’re leaving the house, don’t forget to keep your dog out of the room where your tree is located to avoid injury while you’re away.

Foods such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, sultanas, onion and alcohol can be damaging to your pet’s health, so keep these away from your dog at all times.

Most species are low toxicity but may cause a mild gastrointestinal upset (vomiting and/or diarrhoea) if chewed. Pine needles in themselves can get stuck in paws and cause irritation as well as potentially causing irritation or perforation of the intestines if eaten.

Be cautious of food that’s left on kitchen surfaces or food that falls from your plate whilst you’re eating. Cover up any leftovers on work surfaces and push them towards the back of the worktop so that they’re well out of reach. Remember you can always feed your pet their normal dinner or some dog treats of their own if you’re feeling extra festive.

Vacuum daily and ideally keep plenty of water in the bucket to help reduce the number of fallen needles.

Decorations

Dogs love to chew on all sorts of items around the home and your Christmas decorations are no exception. Place lightweight and delicate baubles out of reach, high up on the tree, so that your dog can’t bite through them and damage their mouth and teeth. Christmas decorations are designed to look attractive and beautiful; unfortunately this usually means they are also tempting to your furry friends. Whilst not often toxic in their own right they can still cause significant problems if ingested. Baubles will tend to splinter or smash into shards which can cause irritation, perforation or blockages and dogs tend to eat tinsel a little like spaghetti - often consuming an entire ribbon of tinsel in one go! Again these are often not especially toxic (even if not particularly nutritious either) but can bunch up and cause blockages or, more worryingly start to work their way through the guts whilst some is still in the 56

Presents

One area where people can come unstuck is with Christmas presents. We put a lot of effort in hiding away potential problems but then wrap up auntie Flo’s big box of chocolates to place under the tree. Although we can no longer tell what it is... our dogs can! Apart from the irritation of having them unwrap someone else’s present and having diarrhoea in the living room on Christmas day, there is likely to be an emergency trip to the vets needed. Make sure any tasty or tempting presents are placed high enough out of the way so that your dog can’t help themselves.

Compton Care Choir

very supportive and whilst the group work extremely hard, their rehearsals are also good fun too.

We are currently looking for new singers to join the Compton Care Choir.

Now is a good time for newcomers to join as the group are starting to learn new pieces for Christmas along with familiar carols and songs.

If you have a passion for singing then we would love to invite you to join our choir at one of their rehearsals to find out more. The choir is particularly in need of Tenor and Bass voices. You do not need to be able to read music, just to hold a tune. Carina, the choir’s Musical Director is

Rehearsals are held every Monday between 7pm – 8.30pm at Christ Church Hall, Church Rd Tettenhall Wood. For more information please email Sue Will, Compton Choir Chairman at suewill@jonathanwill.com.

Staffordshire University Academy and Kingsmead High School. Ambassadors from years 12 & 13 have attended workshops on how to spread the message to their fellow students on the dangers & consequences of sending and receiving nude photographs and to provide support to those who feel pressured to do this. It is hoped that after the halfterm break, the initiatives they have developed will start to be seen in the schools. June Bould, President of SI Cannock and District represented the club at the conference, held in Liverpool, along with other members who all took to the stage to accept the award. After the ceremony, she said ‘How delighted & proud I am that our Your Body, Your Rules project won the Education category at the Federation Conference. Jackie Prince & Trish Mellor have worked extremely hard over the last 6 months on the project with the support of all of the members of our club’. Jackie Prince, one of the Soroptimists that organised & delivered the training to the ambassadors at the workshops said ‘We are delighted to receive this award as recognition that our belief that peer to peer learning on healthy relationships is essential for our young people. Our ambassadors have worked very hard to produce a number of methods of getting the message across that sending or distributing nude photographs is unacceptable. We anticipate that the project will continue to grow in the future’

Did you know the state of your teeth affects your overall health? Gum disease in particular is now linked to lots of general health problems in other parts of the body. As the infographic shows, these include heart disease and heart attacks, diabetes, strokes and lung conditions to highlight a few. My colleagues and I can tell so much about your state of general health just by a clear assessment of your gums and teeth. The link between oral health and overall body health is documented and backed by robust scientific evidence.

SI Cannock & District Your Body, Your Rules

The Your Body, Your Rules anti-sexting project has been officially launched in four local schools: Cannock Chase High, Cardinal Griffin College, Chase Terrace Technology College and Staffordshire University Academy with the launch at Kingsmead High School due in the next few weeks. Ambassadors and members of staff met with Soroptimists Jackie Prince, June Bould (President) and Trish Mellor and the Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Arnold. Each school presented their plans for implementation of the project within their own school. Plans varied from year group assemblies when scenarios about sexting - taking and sending photos of nudes - will be acted out, to presentations to tutor groups giving some hard hitting facts about the issue to safe email or anonymous question boxes which can be used for students to ask for advice. In all cases, students’ knowledge about the issue will be ascertained at the start of the project and again as the project develops.

It is illegal for anyone to be asked to take or send a nude photo of themselves or for anyone to actually take and send such a photo; it is also illegal to receive or store such a photograph. The aim of the project in schools, spearheaded by Cannock Soroptimists, is for students to understand what is appropriate, to know who to go to should they have concerns and to have the confidence to say ‘no’ if ever the need arises. Sue Arnold, DPCC, and June Bould, President of SI Cannock and District, presented each Ambassador with a YBYR badge ad a certificate which will be used within their CV portfolios. The Ambassadors were very excited about the project and keen to ensure its success, they had all put a lot of work into their research and development of their presentations, ensuring they will be appropriate to the age groups within High School. The project will be monitored by staff members and Soroptimists with regular meetings and reports throughout the year. Cannock Soroptimists and the DPCC are very proud of the students and keen to watch progress.

Ford Focus

A UK BEST SELLER

An all-new Ford Focus is a big deal. Not because it’s the most exciting vehicle on the market. Not because it’s the most interesting vehicle on the market, but because the Focus is a car that a lot of people will actually drive. Just look at how many have been sold to date: it’s always been in the top five of the UK’s best-selling car charts since it was launched some 20 years ago. During that time Ford has managed to move nearly 2 million here, and around16 million globally. In fact, if I think too hard and long about it, it makes me feel really old, so I’ll stop and get into what the new mark IV has to offer us. Its face is certainly familiar: the Focus is simple and wears a larger, yet recognisably proud Ford grille between the horizontally-biased headlights, which, like the rear lights, are placed as far into the corners as possible to enhance its masculine stance. It’s available in five-door and estate body styles and not only is it still fun to drive and pleasantly practical, it offers you enormous choice – there’s everything from frugal-yet-fun turbocharged petrol engines to big, dependable diesels. Specification options run from no62

frills basics to ‘everything included’ Taste the Difference ranges. No wonder, then, that it’s a best-seller in Britain. The Focus range starts at Style and is just £17,930 – more than £2,000 below the outgoing model. There are seven variants in a range that tops out at Vignale, which is priced at £25,450. But whatever you choose to spend the reality is that you’ll get an outstanding combination of comfort, safety and driver assistance technologies. Focus Style comes as standard with 16in alloy wheels, air conditioning, DAB digital radio with Bluetooth and Emergency Assist, an electronic parking brake, autonomous emergency braking, tyre pressure monitoring, Hill Start Assist and Lane-Keeping Aid. Zetec models add highlights such as Ford’s acclaimed SYNC3 DAB Radio with a 6.5” touchscreen and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality, and cruise control. This one is always a popular choice. For sporty drivers, the ST-Line offers unique body styling, including unique upper and lower grille, rear spoiler and polished twin tailpipes, but I’m always happiest with the Focus at its most modest price because it allows you to focus in on all the best bits that some of the additional trappings detract

from. After all, this all-new Focus was designed from a clean sheet of paper, and ushers in “a new era for technology, comfort, space and driving experience for Europe’s midsize car customers”, according to Ford. Seems a shame to clutter it up with too many options. The Focus also introduces the FordPass Connect embedded modem for connectivity on the move, a wireless charging pad, and 8” touchscreen. In fact the interior offers more space than in its previous incarnation and boasts high quality materials and craftsmanship. There’s a wealth of intuitive, driver assistance technologies available too including: Speed Sign Recognition and Lane-Centring for effortlessly negotiating stop-start traffic. Clever stuff, but the Focus has always been famously a drivers’ car, so how it handles the pot-marked B-roads of Britain matters to many. Fit it with the sprightly yet economical 1 litre Ecoboost turbocharged unit and you’ll find the Ford at its best: frisky enough to get to 60 mph in 10 seconds and revvy enough to excite on the drive home from work, this engine really fits its hosts’ personality. It is a truly practical, personable and perfectly poised car that’s sure to remain deeply entrenched in this nation’s affections.

Jaguar E-Pace

A HANDSOME BEAST

This SUV is a handsome beast. Nothing like the many scaled-down imitators of fellow brand stablemates you see so often in traffic jams, this new Jaguar E-Pace is a bona fide gem. OK, so it does definitely support the current Jaguar ‘design language’ (which is pretentious speak for how all vehicles by one manufacturer look vaguely similar these days, especially from the front) but I see shades of F-Type: wrap-around taillights, elliptical headlights, muscular proportions, short overhangs and pronounced haunches.

diesels too, with power outputs ranging between 148bhp to this, the top-end and top-notch turbocharged P300 petrol. It delivers 295lb ft of torque and the 296bhp unit is a direct descendent of the F-Type’s four-cylinder: again, very good news. Good also for a 0-60 mph run of 5.9 seconds.

The E-Pace intends to “combine sports car design and agility with everyday SUV practicality” according to Jaguar. So let’s see. It’s based on last year’s World Car of the Year-winning F-Pace and Jaguar’s all-electric I-Pace – that’s right I know some of you may have been thinking the ‘E’ made the E-Pace all-electric, well, it doesn’t.

Going head-to-head with the majestic Volvo XC40, the E-Pace has a lot to measure up to – especially given the challenge it faces from a market that is traditionally dominated by the Germans. However, I’m pleased to report that Jaguar’s new compact performance SUV is a hit. It is competent, desirable and offers serious thrills internally. The cabin quality is peerless and features the latest in car connectivity, including a 10-inch touch screen as standard. The E-Pace has

The E-Pace range gives you fourcylinder Ingenium petrols and a few

Entry-level models are front-driven, but this vehicle benefits from a clutchbased four-wheel-drive system that can direct drive to both axles through its nine-speed automatic gearbox. The most powerful variants also get a torque-vectoring rear differential, which is related to that on the Focus RS. The range starts relatively inexpensively at around £28,500 but you won’t get anywhere near this variant for such a meagre budget because the P300 HSE costs just over £50,000. But, hey, don’t worry, no one actually buys cars anymore now do they?

exceptional interior space and can seat five in comfort; its ride is refined and comforting – even on massive 20” alloy wheels – and the steering gets you just involved enough to make you glad that self-driving cars are still dim-witted gimmicks. There’s also a suite of connected technology and safety features: for example, advanced driver assistance technology that includes Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection (a technology that is able to detect a collision risk with cars or pedestrians in the road ahead and automatically apply the brakes), Lane Keep Assist and Driver Condition Monitor; and it has a five-star Euro NCAP rating making it among the safest on the market. And its Matrix-Laser LED headlights are really something too: they split the main beam into imperceptible vertical strips that maximise light around oncoming traffic while casting a shadow in front of oncoming vehicles to prevent dazzling. In fact, ‘dazzling’ is as good an adjective as any to sum up this latest Big Cat. Far from just another compact SUV it goes beyond the bounds of what you can reasonably expect from a vehicle, delivering an incredible package of practicality and performance, all geared perfectly for everyday life.
