PENSION CHANGES AND THE FALLOUT

Following my feature in the last edition regarding the recent pension changes I have, over the course of the last 2 months, been contacted by several readers regarding their circumstances, so I feel it may be beneficial to explain further exactly how the changes have affected different sectors of the pension market.

and now prohibit cash equivalent transfer values (CETVs).

I will start by looking at public sector pensions that include the following employers:

The only exception to this is the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) as this is a funded scheme that means you are able to obtain a cash equivalent transfer value. On saying that, what we are finding is that the amount being offered as a CETV is way below the levels we would expect or indeed recommend for transferral, as they do not offer

Police, NHS, HMRC and Teachers. All of the above pension schemes are unfunded and therefore, following the pension freedom changes in April 2015, the Government changed their rules 4

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2017

What do we mean by unfunded? Well these are, in the main, government pensions where the pension payments are covered by income received in the form of tax and national insurance. The biggest exponent of this is the State Pension, which probably explains why the government keeps extending the State Pension age – and it is because of this that it has been mooted that the children of today will not receive their State Pension until they are in their mid-70s, which is a daunting thought for the kids of today.

fair value. Whilst we are on the subject of Local Government pensions at retirement, you now have the opportunity to exchange a larger amount of your pension to give you additional tax-free cash, however, the commutation factor used is 12 to 1. To put that in simple terms, it means that for every £1 of income you give up you receive £12 in tax-free cash. This is not generous and in many cases you will receive far better value for money over the medium to long term by not taking the maximum amount of tax-free cash. If in doubt, always consult with an Independent Financial Adviser.

While public sector pensions are very limited in their options most other funded final salary pension schemes are offering attractive transfer values that, depending on your circumstances, can be life changing as you will see from the action taken by the clients I met recently. CASE STUDY: Mr and Mrs R I met Mr and Mrs R after being introduced to them by Mrs R’s brother; he has been a client of mine for some time. They have both worked for Jaguar Land Rover Mrs R for 30 years and Mr R for 22 years. They had, prior to meeting with me, contacted the JLR Pension Scheme to request CETVs and the values quoted surprised them to say the least. Mrs R who is approaching her 58th birthday has accumulated a deferred pension of £23,017.70 per annum, payable on her 65th birthday; she was offered a transfer value of £668,776.94, should she decide to transfer away from the scheme. Mr R who is 62 in May has a deferred pension of £14,649.63 per annum payable on his

65th birthday; he was offered £400,319.32 should he decide to transfer away from the scheme.

take as for both of them “holidays” are the love of their lives.

Their personal circumstances are a little different as Mr R still enjoys work however Mrs R yearns to retire and would stop working immediately if financially viable which, dependent upon her needs and objectives, may well be viable. Once we had gone through an in-depth analysis of their circumstances it transpires that to live comfortably the household income required is £3,000 per month which means, whilst Mr R is working he contributes £2,000, Mrs R would need £1,000 per month initially.

I must highlight that we are able to utilise the tax free cash as part of an overall tax planning strategy as they have savings elsewhere although, at some stage in the future, they may well need to replenish them from their pension fund.

With Mrs R’s transfer value being in excess of £600,000 we could utilise the tax-free cash as part of an overall tax saving strategy, take £14,666 per annum with no liability to income tax thus giving a net monthly income of £1,222 - slightly more than required but worth having to fully utilise her personal allowance. This income would be drawing less than 2.3% from the overall fund which is below the investment returns that we have achieved for our clients over the medium to long term. Although at this stage I must point out that past returns are no guarantee of future returns. Mrs R decided there and then that her life was going to change and as soon as we could arrange to proceed with the transfer she would hand in her notice and retire immediately. Mr R on the other hand wants to continue working for another 12 months however a few days after our meeting he was reprimanded for the time he likes to take off for holidays over the Christmas period and he came out of that meeting with the mind-set that if they are not happy he may well bring his retirement forward and bow out gracefully. From an adviser’s point of view it is so refreshing to meet people and totally change their lives as, prior to our meeting, Mrs R accepted that she would have to work until her 65th birthday, whilst for 4 years her husband would be retired whereas now she is retiring before him and has already started planning the vacations they will

The main difference now is that Mr & Mrs R have total control of their future and whilst this suits their circumstances, for others it can be daunting as being able to just receive a yearly pension with no input that is 100% guaranteed for the rest of their life is more suitable. I see many clients with this dilemma and my advice has always been “if in doubt, don’t” - make sure that before taking any action you are 100% comfortable in what you are doing. Should you have a final salary pension and want to find out what options are available to you please do not hesitate to contact us and we will gladly advise you. Initial meetings are at our expense.

Competition

One lucky winner can win a pair of tickets to see A Judgement In Stone on Monday 3 July at 7:30pm Building on the phenomenal decade-long success of The Agatha Christie Theatre Company, which sold over two million tickets and continually played to packed houses around the UK, Bill Kenwright presents a new production adapted from one of the most celebrated works of the writer often hailed as the successor to Agatha Christie, Ruth Rendell’s A Judgement In Stone from Monday 3 - Saturday 8 July at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre. Rendell was first published in 1964 and was awarded a CBE in 1996. Her prolific output included film and TV as well as 80 novels and one of the genre’s most famous characters, Chief Inspector Wexford. Widely considered to be one of Rendell’s greatest works, A Judgement in Stone is loved for its brilliant rendering of character, plot and motive, and is undoubtedly Rendell at her thrilling best. Eunice struggles to fit in. When she joins a wealthy family as their housekeeper the very reason for her awkwardness, long hidden and deeply buried, leads inexorably to a terrible tale of murder in cold blood - on Valentine’s Day. Ruth Rendell’s brilliant plot unravels a lifetime of deceit, despair and cover-ups which, when revealed, brings a shocking revelation almost as grizzly as murder itself. The star cast includes award winning TV and stage favourite Andrew Lancel best known to TV audiences for his portrayal of villainous business man Frank Foster in Coronation Street, winning Villain of the Year in the British Soap Awards, and as DI Neil Manson in over 300 episodes of The Bill. On stage in 2016 Andrew starred as Captain Von Trapp in the UK Tour of The Sound of Music and in 2015 he starred in 12 Angry Men, both at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre. A Judgement In Stone also stars Blue’s Anthony Costa, Sophie Ward, Shirley Anne Field and Ben Nealon. Tickets are available by calling the Grand Theatre Box Office on 01902 42 92 12, by visiting in person or online at grandtheatre.co.uk.

CHASE ARTS FOR PUBLIC SPACES [CHAPS] FINAL PHASE OF MINING MEMORIAL

It was wonderful to see so many people in Hednesford Town Centre on Saturday 22nd April for the dedication of the final phase of 500 named bricks within the mining memorial and in the sunshine, too! People travelled from all parts of the country, families met up after what was, for some of them, a long time without meeting, joining with hundreds of people who live more locally – and all to recognize the contribution made to the Cannock Chase area by those who worked in our coal mines. Lea Hall Brass Band played before, during and after the service and Cannock Chase Orpheus Male Choir were in fine voice as they led the hymns and gave their own performance during the service includeding “Take me Home” – known as the Miners’ Hymn – and which brought a tear to many eyes. Pat Ansell, chair of CHAPS, welcomed everyone and the service was led by the Right Revd Nigel McCulloch KCVO, former Bishop of Manchester, who has a strong link both with the Cannock area and with mining. His words touched everyone’s hearts. Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire, Mr Ian Dudson, CBE, KStJ read a passage from the Bible and Jim Bullock, a lay preacher and a former miner gave his recollections of working in the pits – stirring wonderful memories and bringing smiles and laughter. Mike Mellor BEM, President of CHAPS, who first proposed the idea of named bricks to the CHAPS committee and who has overseen all four phases of the project from 2004 to the present date, gave the final words of thanks, telling everyone how wonderful the whole project has been, making him feel humble and proud, knowing that the lives of so many have been touched. He said that it is comforting to know that the 4,034 named bricks within the memorial are to be looked after and cared for by our local councils and by the group Heart of Hednesford. An insert for the book “A Lasting Tribute” was produced, 14

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2017

containing all 500 names within the 4th phase. Many collected their copy on the day, those who weren’t able to can collect a copy either from Hednesford Library or from the Museum of Cannock Chase, Hednesford. The memorial belongs to us all and is a symbol of our respect for the mining community; it recognises the very strong and special bond that existed – and still prevails today – among those who worked in the industry. It ensures that the mining heritage of our area and the people who worked at the collieries of the Cannock Chase Coalfield will always be remembered. It is indeed “A Lasting Tribute”.

Information about this and other projects CHAPS has undertaken can be found on the website: www.chaseartsforpublicspaces.co.uk

DC ROOFING SERVICES Expert fitters of UPVC Fascias, Cladding, Gutter Systems and Dry Verge Systems Maintenance free gable Neat, attractive appearance No more cracked cement Brown or grey colours available Prevents rain entering, causing rotten spas

DRY VERGE

No strong wind blowing off tiles

British Standards state that no reliance should be placed on the shear strength of mortar used in the filling and bedding. Mortar will eventually crack, in contrast, Dry Verges are mechanically fixed and each unit individually screwed. With the next unit interlocking giving extra strength and hiding the screws. This offers the maximum protection against strong winds and water penetration, giving you long term protection with a neat, attractive appearance and with none of the ongoing costs associated with Mortar.

Prevents entry of birds and large insects

WE COVER ALL ROOFING INCLUDING: NEW ROOFS/ FLAT ROOFS - Rubberised one sheet flat roofs – one sheet – No joints - Half the time to install compared to traditional felt or tar – Comes with a 20 year guarantee. EAVES PROTECTION SYSTEM – We cut back the rotten felt and insert the PVC Eaves Protection System

RIDGEFAST Ridgefast can be used with all standard ridges, tiles and slates. Ridgefast is more capable of standing up to the worst that the British weather can throw at it.

IT’S FAST Ridgefast is the fast and easy way to install a ventilated dry ridge. This unique system is designed to simply attach along the ridge and is far quicker than Mortar bedding.

IT’S UNIVERSAL Thanks to a unique fixing system Ridgefast can be used with all standard ridges, tiles and slates. Ridgefast is easily moulded to the shape of any tile or slate and the grey colour of the side flashing replicates a mortar finish.

The new Dry Ridge System is 100% UPVC and has been British IT’S VENTILATED Standards tested against warping, Provides a minimum ventilated area of 5000 sq.mm. per discolouring and cracking linearmetre and is suitable for ventilating flat tiles. You can use Ridgefast with ridge and gas terminals.

IT’S MAINTENANCE FREE The dry fixing method offers considerable advantages, not only in the speed of installation, but also in longterm economy and safety.

Stafford Sports and Performance Academy GOTTA DANCE SHOW When reflecting on the shows Stafford Sports and Performance Academy dance teacher Becci Griffies said “The shows were a fantastic way for parents to see first-hand all the hard work their children have been putting into their dancing over the past few months. I know the children loved the experience performing in front of a full house and they can’t wait to go under the lights again soon.”

After months of anticipation and dedication by local children and their dance teachers, the annual Stafford Sports and Performance Academy ‘Gotta Dance’ show recently took place at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre across four evenings between Wednesday 26th and Saturday 29th April.

With the stage set the midweek shows saw approximately 40 acts, in the region of 1000 young people from local schools as well as from Stafford Sports and Performance Academy and ‘Dappa Dance’, take to the stage to perform their dance routines. The packed-out audiences were also treated to a few tracks from many talented soloists who provided extra musical entertainment.

As always thanks must go to all the staff at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre for their contribution in making the event run as smoothly as possible from the front of house, to the technical, backstage and box office staff. Steve Glover, organiser, said, “We had a fantastic four days of singing and dancing. It is great to see so many young people being physically active. The schools continue to get better each year and it was great to welcome new schools. We are already looking forward to Gotta Dance 2018.”

Looking ahead plans have already been made regarding next year’s showcase. The show will take place between Wednesday 25th April – Saturday 28th April 2018 and all schools are welcome to attend.

All Photos are courtesy of GCG Photography.

An additional Saturday show was also set aside to showcase the ever-increasing Stafford Sports and Performance Academy dance groups, such as the specialist groups who performed a variety of ballet and musical theatre through to contemporary and street cheer. 26

Heleniums MY FAVOURITE PLANT The great garden writer Christopher Lloyd, when asked what his favourite flower was, replied: “the one I’m looking at now”. It’s that way with me with Heleniums; all are beautiful in their own right, all are equally easy to grow and all do a great job in the border, be it a 15inch (38cm) edger to a 6-footer (180cm) at the back. Heleniums come in all shades and variations of Yellow, Orange and Red. The only thing to remember is that Heleniums need good sunlight to obtain the best colours. Yellow varieties will perform in some shade, but the reds need 3 or 4 hours of good sunlight to colour up properly. Left in the shade they will be pale orange and yellow.

best is the 2ft (60cm) tall Mardi Gras with its jolly masses of flower and a strong constitution. Also, highly recommended is the bright red Red Army and Fata Morgana a lovely variety with upswept petals in apricot with orange undersides making a beautiful two-toned effect in the garden. Mid height Heleniums (3ft / 60cm tall) are great for the middle or back of borders (depending on the size of border). The most popular is Sahin’s Early Flowerer but a better choice is the magnificent El Dorado with very large golden yellow flowers. Hot Lava is a brand new one that is later to flower but very bushy.

The common name, “Sneezeweed”, comes from the use of dried and powdered leaves as medicinal snuff to cure colds and bronchitis. Don’t try this at home! Heleniums are toxic and harmful if ingested. In Germany, they are called “Sonnenbraut” – “Sun Brides”; far more romantic! All Heleniums are a great source of nectar for bees and butterflies which will flock to the flowers with glee.

Gardeners often think of Heleniums as late-flowering, adding colour to the August and September garden, but with careful selection of varieties and regular dead heading and watering, you can have Heleniums in bloom from mid-June until the beginning of November without having to resort to forcing plants in a greenhouse. The short varieties are usually earlier to flower and with dead heading will go on longest. Probably the 30

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2017

Tall varieties (4-6ft / 120-180cm) might need a stake in an exposed site but I rarely need to resort to this as the stems are very thick and strong. Amber is the best of newer varieties with masses of flower on upright plants. You can’t go wrong with the 4-5ft old variety Kanaria with its canary yellow flowers. For something showier the picotee-edged flowers of Fiesta stand out well at the back of the border. Heleniums mix well with lots of garden plants. I particularly like them with grasses in late summer – short moor grasses (Molinia) or taller Silver Grass (Miscanthus) and Feather Grass (Pennisetum). Monarda (Bergamot) and Phlox make great companions as all require similar growing conditions. There are a few simple rules to follow to get the best out of heleniums: water whenever dry even in spring or autumn; deadhead short varieties regularly; cut down the stems to just above the ground in winter and only divide or move them in spring not autumn. Follow these and heleniums should come back each year to brighten up your summer and autumn garden. Wasp Facts by The Pest Control Man Wasps can sting over and over again. The sting of a wasp should wear off within 24 hours but for a small minority of people the venom in their sting causes anaphylactic shock which can be fatal. Adult wasps mainly feed on nectar, but the majority of their time is taken up by foraging for food for their carnivorous young, mostly insects or spiders. This can be great for our gardens as they eat the garden pests.

Wasps make nests from paper. They chew up strips of bark and spit it out again to form a rough paper. Some wasps make nests in basements, sheds or dark, cool places. A queen starts a new colony each spring. She raises a few worker wasps first to make the nest larger and bring food. Then she starts laying eggs. A colony can grow to 50,000 wasps in one summer. In the winter all the wasps die except for a few new queens. The new queens spend the winter in an old log or burrow. In the spring, they make new colonies.

If you need any treatment against wasps in your property please contact Tim on 07519 613196. Wasp removal is just £40.00. We do not charge any extra for weekends or evenings.

Taking place on Friday 28th, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th of July at Lower Drayton Farm, near Penkridge, this year’s Middle of Nowhere Music Festival line-up includes local, national and international bands. Friday’s line-up includes local group The Taskers; Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers tribute Too Petty; madcap covers band Lost The Plot and headliners Fleetwood Bac who will replicate a full Fleetwood Mac show as they were back in the 70s & 80s. However, the standout acts of the day have to be troubadour Gaz Brookfield – more regularly found billed alongside the likes of The Levellers, Frank Turner, New Model Army, Nick Harper, Newton Faulkner, Seth Lakeman and others – and 70s glam rockers Glam 45, who will play renditions of the genre’s greats. On Sunday the undoubted stars of the show will be country rockers Dan Baird & Homemade Sin, whilst Blues artist Jake Henry, The Runawayz, Smashed and the festival’s very own supergroup The Middle of Nowhere Jam Band will also entertain the crowds. In addition to great live music, the family-friendly festival offers access to the farm's family fun farm attraction with its adventure playground, Maize Maze and friendly animals. Why you should insist on a retired Royal Marines Commando to clean your carpets. Your home is your castle. You should keep it clean and safe by only allowing over your threshold, a tradesman that you can trust & has a background to be proud of. It is common knowledge that the Royal Marines, proud wearers of the coveted Green Berets, are a force to be reckoned with which means the days of dirty carpets and upholstery are numbered. The Commando ethos, held close to every Commando’s heart are; courage, determination, unselfishness, cheerfulness in the face of adversity. This means that you can call Zero Dry Time safe in the knowledge that the job will be done well, cost effectively and with the minimum of fuss.

‘I am rightly proud of my military background and I put to work the Commando ethos.’ said Ian 55 years from Barlaston near Stone. ‘My work is second to none, and each time I take a job on, I’ll not leave until it can’t get any cleaner. ‘Continues Ian. ‘I am acutely aware of the notion of being in someone’s home and treat it accordingly. I focus on the job in hand until it is completed. My results are constant and exceptional with no drying time, it is walk dry almost immediately.’ Insists Ian So let the draw bridge down and call a carpet cleaner you can trust. Restaurant Review

Indian Cuisine

This evening my partner and I had booked a table at the recently opened Tamarind Indian restaurant. We parked on the large free car park to the rear of the restaurant and made our way inside. On entering we were greeted by Mohammed, the owner of Tamarind who explained that the restaurant had recently opened and had undergone a huge refurbishment, which we both commented on how beautifully this had been done. The restaurant has a contemporary and modern feel and the original wooden ceiling beams look great! Mohammed then took us to our table where we began to peruse the menus that had been given to us. We both ordered a Cobra beer which is served on draught and began to look at all of the delicious dishes that were available. My partner and I were spoilt for choice, the menu has something for everyone, whether it be a more familiar traditional dish or a specials selection which are unique to the Tamarind. Our waiter came to take our order and was very professional and polite when we asked questions about specific dishes, he also asked what our preferences were and recommended one of the specials which would not be too hot!

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2017

For starters we ordered the garlic and white wine king prawn (6.50), giant fresh water king prawns, pan fried and buried in garlic and white wine chutney along with the salmon tikka (£4.95), lightly spiced salmon cooked with chef’s special tikka marinade and roasted in a tandoori oven over charcoal. For our main courses I wanted to try a different dish, so off the Tamarind collection I opted for the Assamki (£11.50), spicy off the bone strips of chicken cooked with fresh ginger, garlic and green chillies and a dash of whole black cumin. Very hot spicy dish accompanied with pilau rice. My partner chose a traditional special of butter chicken (£7.95), strips of tandoori chicken laced with a silky plum tomato and makhon sauce, a refined and elegant dish. We also ordered a peshwari nan to share. We ordered more drinks whilst our food was being prepared and it wasn’t too long before our starters arrived which looked and tasted divine! We were both looking forward to our main dishes now and when they came we were very impressed. The presentation was perfect with everything cooked to perfection. Once our mains were cleared our waiter asked if we would like desserts, however on this occasion we had no room and finished this great evening with coffees for both.

One area we surpass in is our waxing treatments. We are specialists in all areas of waxing with particular knowledge in intimate hair removal. high quality wax. The range includes hypoallergenic waxes, moisturising natural waxes, strip and non-strip waxes, scented and unscented. The waxes are perfect for both male and female waxing treatments including intimate waxing. We use non-strip waxing in the salon specifically for intimate hair removal as the waxes literally shrink wrap the hair, removing the entire hair with its roots from the follicle, leaving the skin undamaged. Since the wax sticks to the hair and not the skin it takes the smack like sting out of the process you get with strip waxing hair removal. We have found regular waxing with this method weakens and slows down hair regrowth and produces results that last longer.

With years of experience under her belt June has mastered technique and client comfort during waxing of all parts of the body. Much care has been put into the choice of products used for hair removal within the salon. In 2012 June registered with the Perrin Rigot Expert Network and has been using these waxes ever since. alcohol cleanser especially recommended for delicate areas and sensitive skin, before adding a few drops of Jasmine Oil to ensure the wax clings to the hairs and not the skin. After treatment the waxed area is to be kept clean, avoiding heat and friction for 24-48 hours. We advise that you do not apply any deodorants, body sprays, make-up, perfume or lotions to the waxed area during that period. However we do recommend the use of Lemon Myrtle multi-purpose liquid soap (sold in salon) to tackle possible ingrowing hairs and post waxing irritation. It is made from all natural ingredients, suitable for sensitive skin, contains Lemon Myrtle essential oils, has 30% more antibacterial properties than T-tree oil and can be used as an invigorating body wash that cleanses and protects the skin. Finally a few days after your appointment gently exfoliate up to 3 times a week, moisturise every day to keep skin soft and smooth.

‘FLAMIN JUNE’ THE TWINS AND THE CRAB Let’s hope it is this year! This time of year is when gardens are in full bloom and the world looks at its best. We are continuing the theme of looking at the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac; for June and July exploring Gemini and Cancer. Being born on the first or last day of a sign, in astrological terms, means being born on a cusp. Thus, there is a benefit from reading that sign and that following or preceding. Gemini - The Twins May 21st - June 20th Element: Air Ruling Planet: Mercury Symbol: The Twins Stone: Aquamarine Life Pursuit: Explore a little bit of everything. Vibration: Intense mental energy Secret Desire: Be ahead of the crowd

More Astrology Traits and Personality. Multi-talented Geminis are multi-faceted souls who enjoy knowing a little bit of everything but generally not too much about one particular subject. It’s just that variety is the spice of their lives! And no one is better at multitasking than the quixotic Gemini.

Communicators: Geminis have also gained the reputation of being the incessant talkers of the zodiac. Those that don’t have the ‘gift of the gab’ are usually talented writers or have a special interest in foreign languages.

Adventurous and full of fun: Another reason Geminis evoke so much interest is many born under this sign are multi-dimensionally talented.

Cancer - The Crab June 21st - July 22nd Element: Water Ruling Planet: The Moon Symbol: The Crab Stone: Moonstone Life Pursuit: Constant reassurance and intimacy Vibration: Moody Secret Desire: To feel safe (emotionally, spiritually, romantically and financially)

56

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2017

More Astrology Traits and Personality Compassionate and Family Orientated: Like their astrological symbol - the Crab - Cancers can appear hard and insensitive on the outside. However, deep below lies a softness and sensitivity that makes them so very special. Nurturing, protection and caring for others underline their life principles.

Emotional and Sensitive: Up and down like the proverbial yo-yo, most Cancerians feel one way one minute, then sometimes totally different the next. But this characteristic is part of their charm.

Romantic and Mysterious: This sign is one of the most magic of all and once their magic has reached you, they are the most beguiling companions. Here at the ‘Double Award Winning’ Chase CACI Clinic we are also ‘nurturing protective and caring’. We help nurture your skin so that you look your best by helping you protect the outer layers whilst reinforcing underlying tissue. Above all: We Care; not only about the way you look, but about the way you feel. Confidence in external appearance enhances self - confidence. We are CACI specialists and have two of their top machines: The Ultimate and The Quantum. Both can do the mainstream CACI facials and additional unique treatments. TOPTRACER will change golf practice forever! Wolverhampton-based golf complex 3 Hammers have revolutionised its 20 bay driving range to be one of the first in the country to have the new Toptracer experience. Formerly Protracer, the new generation technology now rebranded as Toptracer follows a take over by Topgolf in May 2016. The state of the art technology tracks and analyses every shot hit on a driving range making golfers’ practice sessions more rewarding, and more importantly making it a lot more fun to go to the driving range. The national award winning golf complex based in Coven is renowned for being a trailblazer in the golfing world with its first class indoor and outdoor facilities including an 18 hole golf course, indoor Golf

58

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2017

Performance Studio, 5 PGA Golf Professionals and the latest Trackman 4 – the world’s leading launch monitor. The introduction of Toptracer now enables their customers to convert shots to actual yardages, just as if they had hit a premium golf ball. Golfers can visit 3 Hammers and go through their whole golf bag from sand wedge to driver, replay all their shots and get real yardages on their smartphone or tablet… all for free! Golf Academy Director Rob Bluck said “Toptracer adds a whole new dimension to a golfer’s practice and learning. Range practice is ideal for golfers who want to practice and get instant feedback on their practice session obtaining data such as shot shape, carry distance and distance from target. 3 Hammers continues to go from strength to strength and leads the way by offering the region’s golfers the latest, high quality facilities”.

Make Your Practice Count As soon as you hit the ball the shot flight will be shown on the touchscreen tablet in your bay. You will also see exactly how far your shot travelled in yardages. Set up the golf ball. As soon as you hit the ball the shot trajectory is shown in the 23 inch mounted touch screen monitor. Use the menu to adjust the angle against your 3 previous shots. You can then send your scorecard via email and see if you can improve on your result at your next visit. Toptracer was originally developed to show viewers the flight path of golf shots, the yardage and the distance the ball ends from the target. Now technology has been adapted and is available for customers to use for free of charge on their range, with custom-made screens built into 10 of their driving range bays. Customers can also download the app to their smartphone or tablet. Toptracer gives accurate yardages on every shot, shows the shot trajectory and lets customers play exciting points games. The complex’s investment in Toptracer means game improvement has never been so accessible and enjoyable for golfers practicing at 3 Hammers. There’s no need for a device, they simply turn up and start hitting balls. Customers can experience this groundbreaking technology and are invited to pop down to 3 Hammers and try out this revolutionary kit for themselves. They can analyse their game like the pros, either individually

or as a group of friends, in a nearest the pin, longest drive or points and skills competition. A live leader board of ongoing games is also displayed at the complex making it fun for beginners and golf Pros alike. This pioneering technology has been introduced to the complex as part of its £210,000 driving range upgrade. 2016 saw their driving range outfield completely remodelled to make it more like that of a real golf course. Complex owner Ian Bonser said “Toptracer is very popular among golfers who not only want to improve their game but have fun too. This technology is state of the art and brings 3 Hammers truly into the 21st century”.

Wolgarston Celebrates Football Success! For the first time in Wolgarston’s history the school has won both the Staffordshire Schools Football Association Girl’s and Boy’s County Cup at Under 15 level. This is a fantastic achievement and demonstrates the massive strides the school is taking in developing both boy’s and girl’s football using our 3G facilities. On Monday the 24th April our male Year 10 football team competed in the final of the Under 15 County Cup, their opponents were Repton School. The game was played at Stafford Town Football Club. The game finished at a draw of 1 -1 after extra time with a Wolgarston goal scored by Alex Hallchurch , so to decide who the Under 15 champions would be would all be down to a penalty shoot-out. Fortunately every one of Wolgarston’s penalty takers found the back of the net and it was left to goalkeeper Sam Edmunds to save Repton’s sixth penalty and win the County Cup for Wolgarston. A huge congratulations to Sam Edmunds who saved Repton’s sixth penalty. That means that our school holds both the Under 15 boys and girls football champion status. Well done to our team members Sam Edmunds, Alex Wingfield,

Alex Marsh, Alex Hallchurch, Andrew Archer, Ethan Woodman, James Black, Morgan Manley, Reuben Powney, Ben Wall, Dan Lyons, Cameron Jackson, Harry Bickford, Joel Price, Max Perry and Sam Arthrell. “I am so proud of our students they have shown us all how working together determined as a team you can achieve so much,” said Mr Skinner (Teacher of PE), “These students have done this school proud and it is a privilege to be their coach.” On Monday 3rd April our female team travelled to St Georges Park for their County Cup Final. They played Chesterton High School in perfect conditions on the David Beckham 3G pitch. After going 2-1 down, they showed excellent resilience and managed to battle through and win the game 3-2. The members of our girls’ team are Charlotte Harrison, Charlotte Hampton, Lauren Adams, Lauren Kelly, Maddison Collins, Katie Nall, Macey Turvey, Essie Turvey, Molly Thompson, Lily McNally, Gemma Lawley, Ruby Turner, Chloe Rowley and Rylan Spencer. “I am so proud of the girls, they have worked and trained so hard for this,” said Mrs Stanton (Teacher of PE), “Both of our teams have done amazingly they have set the bar for teams to come.”

I Love Staffordshire’ poetry competition winners announced VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE QUALITY AND CREATIVENESS OF POEMS Two young budding Staffordshire poets have won prizes for themselves and for their school classes in the first ‘I Love Staffordshire’ poetry competition. The contest, organised by Enjoy Staffordshire, Staffordshire County Council and Stoke-on-Trent library services, was part of this year’s Staffordshire Day celebrations on 1 May 2017. Rebecca Lockwood, aged 16 from Cannock won the 11-16 years category with her poem entitled The Stag and I. The under 11’s category was won by Honor Sutton aged 9 from Stafford with her poem Staffordshire, My Favourite Place to be.The judges, Staffordshire’s Poet Laureate Bert Flitcroft and the Young Poet Laureate for Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Isobel Horsley, Poetry on Loan Co-ordinator Brenda Read-Brown, and Terry Heath from Staffordshire Libraries & Arts Service were impressed with the quality of the winning poems. Rebecca, a pupil at Cannock Chase High School said: “I am eternally delighted and overwhelmed to have won the Staffordshire Day poetry competition, poetry has the ability to bring people together from all walks of life and I cannot thank Staffordshire Libraries enough for allowing me to contribute to the beauty of it." Honor said: “I was happy to hear that I had won but a bit surprised too. I wrote the poem for my Grandad who hasn’t been very well and I wanted to cheer him up. He loves poetry himself and got me into it. He wrote 60

one about me when I was born which I still have. My Grandad loves Staffordshire and I wrote about all the places he took me in my poem. I wanted to make him proud too. I’m looking forward to going to the Monkey Forest with my class.” Gill Heath, Libraries Chief at Staffordshire County Council passed on her congratulations to the winners. Gill said: “We were very impressed with the quality and creativeness of all the poems submitted but Rebecca and Honor’s poems did stand out. Honor won a class trip to the Trentham Monkey Forest and for herself a Monkey Forest family ticket and £50 One4All gift card. Rebecca won for herself a pair of Thrill Hopper passes, and a workshop for her school with performance poet Giovanni Esposito, also known as Spoz.

High and Mighty HR-V WITH UNIQUE FLEXIBILITY

Stilt-walkers used to be sideshow circus attractions – but nowadays, when it comes to cars at least, they’re everywhere. Here’s Honda’s HR-V. The name stands for High Riding Vehicle. In reality it is a Honda Jazz in drag, wearing stilettos. Ever since the Nissan Juke became a best-seller people have being crying out for ever more jacked-up versions of familiar hatchbacks. Compact SUVs definitely look better, I’ll give you that, but do they justify their place in our nation’s affections? Let’s find out. If you care about safety, listen up: the HR-V scored five stars in Euro NCAP’s crash tests. All models have six airbags and an automatic city emergency braking system that applies the brakes to prevent you crashing into the car in front at low speeds. Upgrading from the base S model to SE adds Honda’s Driver Assistance Safety Pack, which includes lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition and adaptive cruise control. It’s a system better at nannying than your last babysitter: pop your kid inside and they’ll be safer than in the womb. There’s also legendary Japanese build-quality to consider as well. This Honda is more than capable of shrugging off the rigours of family life. You might even say it’s more durable and robust than a child’s Tonka toy. The 1.6 litre i-DTEC diesel is tractable at low-revs, gutsy if 62

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2017

pushed, but sophisticated enough to waft you quietly around the city suburbs in style, on some of the funkiest alloys I’ve seen in a while. There is a new 128bhp 1.5 litre i-VTEC petrol, which is quiet and smooth, but as ever, unless you only potter to the local shops and back, diesel does it best. 118bhp means it’s not hugely quick – and it can be noisy at times – but the promise of figures like 68.9mpg and £20 road tax should make you feel better. There’s only a front-wheel drive set-up available in the UK market, which makes sense since I’m sure nobody ever uses such any offroad facility in a vehicle like this. Although a leisurely day spent offroading is far less dangerous than wandering alone and unsupervised into the cavernous bootspace. Your family will be left filling out missing person reports if you do. The HR-V has one of the biggest boots in its class, almost matching the Renault Captur. A squared-off opening and low lip make dragging heavy items in and out easy. Furthermore, the rear seats fold completely flat and there’s unique flexibility offered by the HR-V’s USP: ‘Magic Seats’, which flip-up, cinema-style, to create storage for tall objects. You can buy the HR-V in four different trims, ranging from the entry level S, through to the SE, SE Navi and EX. All of them are well equipped and feature climate and cruise control, auto headlamps and

Bluetooth. Pretty good so far, so but how does it drive? In truth, pretty well. The HR-V is easy to drive, with good forward visibility thanks to the – you guessed it – raised driving position. Riding higher than you ordinarily would injects a hitherto unknown confidence into driving around the urban jungle; you feel ever-so-slightly omniscient. The steering is light but accurate and the ride feels especially fluid when at speed and cruising. The city stuff is a cinch too - thanks to dainty dimensions and minimal overhangs – meaning you can place and park it with consummate ease. So it’s almost small enough for you to be able to park it in your pocket and it won’t see you out of pocket either with comparably low running costs – emissions run at 108g/km – and a tempting price of around £23,000. So the numbers add up and Honda has made a good fist of producing a product package which makes sense to the left - more logical hemisphere of your brain, even though, you’ll be thinking, can I just get away with a much cheaper Jazz? Sacrifice style over substance. Is the trendy HR-V really worth more? Well, having spent a week with it, I’m happy to report that I’m very impressed. With striking looks, a regal driving position allied to serious overtaking punch and fine handling manners, the HR-V is temptation itself.

Women’s Health Across the Ages

Menstrual problems at all ages can be successfully investigated and treated by a specialist gynaecologist. Surgery may be advised where medical treatment is ineffective or if there is no wish for future fertility. Keyhole techniques ensure speedy recovery and a quicker return to normal activities. Ms Bathula is a British Society of Colposcopy & Cervical Pathology accredited Colposcopist, dealing with abnormal cervical smears.

Qualifying at one of the premier medical institutes of India, JIPMER, Pondicherry, Ms Bathula completed her early medical training in India and then continued in the West Midlands, where she also undertook her specialist training.
