CHASE ARTS FOR PUBLIC SPACES [CHAPS] PHASE 4 WILL BE ADDED TO THE MEMORIAL The Memorial commemorating the Cannock Chase Coalfields and located in Hednesford Town Centre currently has the names of over 3,600 people who were involved with pits in the area. The first phase was erected in 2006 with phases 2 and 3 added in 2012 and 2014. The memorial has been the focus of considerable attention and interest, both by those who had named bricks included and by many others who have an interest in the mining industry upon which our community was built and the committee of CHAPS continue to receive requests for named bricks. CHAPS is delighted to announce that a further phase - phase 4 - will be added to the memorial. This is to be the final addition of named bricks to the memorial - there will be no opportunity for additions once this phase closes. They propose that work on the project will commence in October 2016, therefore it is the Committee’s decision that a closing date for receipt of completed applications will be August 31st 2016 after which no further requests will be accepted. The mining memorial has the full backing and support of Hednesford Town Council and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust. Further bricks will be laid around the grass areas which surround the clock in front of Anglesey Lodge and will form part of the overall memorial which has a huge Davy Lamp as its focus. Anyone wishing to obtain application forms for named bricks, which will cost £25.00 each, should contact Trish Mellor, Secretary of CHAPS. The address for written correspondence is 52, Hatherton Road, Cannock, Staffs, WS11 1HQ, the phone number to use is 07583 655199. CHAPS can be contacted by email: trishmellor@yahoo. co.uk to request an application form or the form can be downloaded from the website: www.chaseartsforpublicspaces.co.uk

It is hoped that the time scale will give all interested parties the opportunity to make written applications and thereby ensure a final successful phase of the Memorial.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted
up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when
we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Cannock and Stafford areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the
personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

CARVER WOLVERHAMPTON CITY MARATHON EVENTS SUNDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER 2016 In this, the 19th year of the running of the Marathon Events, the organisers are putting in place the plans to ensure that on SUNDAY 4th SEPTEMBER in West Park all will come together to make the Events even more successful than in previous years.
These events attract many competitors and Supporters who all help the fundraising cause. Many people also choose to help their own good causes which of course the organisers welcome. This year the chosen charities will be Compton Hospice, a foundation close to many people’s hearts. In order to carry out all the good work that the Hospice does they need to generate a substantial income each year. The other Charities set to benefit this year are The Haven, another very deserving charity based in Wolverhampton helping women and children who have been involved in domestic violence. Also set to share in the proceeds raised are Wolverhampton Rheumatology Support Group. This local group offer help and support to people with arthritis related conditions. The Marathon also supports the Mayoral Charity Fund, although until the appointment of the new mayor it is uncertain which the chosen charities by the incoming Mayor will be. The success of the events are made possible by the dedicated team who meet throughout the months leading up to 4th September to ensure that they provide a safe and well managed event for everyone to enjoy. This, together with the generosity of the Sponsors, enables people of all ages and abilities to take part and help the fundraising cause. 10 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2016
Major sponsors Carvers Building Supplies, Cousins Furniture and Banks’s Brewery continue to support with their generous financial help. Angel Springs have also renewed their generous sponsorship this year and they will again provide all the bottled water for the runners. NJB Sports & Physio from Codsall are in attendance on Marathon day helping runners to recover from the challenges they have faced out on the road. Further sponsors are, Greggs, Signal 107, Express & Star, Wolverhampton West Magazine, Places for People Leisure, Fred Williams Cycles, Ron Flowers Sports, Veloxserv, (who sponsor the marathon website). Another Sponsor is Charles Clark Toyota who will be supplying the lead car and back up vehicles. Each year as the Event grows more Companies are getting involved, both financially and with their services. This exemplifies the popularity of the Marathon events in the City of Wolverhampton. Each of these Companies play an important part in making the event successful. It is a pleasure working with them.

Students design and make coats for lucky Lola DESIGN CHALLENGE! Blessed William Howard Catholic High School students have completed an unusual textiles project this term. Ensuring that the class would engage thoroughly with the task, textiles teacher, Miss Sophie Willetts, set them the challenge of designing and making a dog coat for her Welsh terrier, Lola. “I wanted my students to be open to designing different products in Textiles for a range of users, not just the usual fashion garments. I hoped that clothes for dogs would capture their imagination and it really did. I allowed the students to be inspired by any theme of their choice, however they also had to consider the needs of Lola and the functionality and safety of the coat. This led to a range of different styles being designed from futuristic themes to fashion and country inspired designs.” commented Sophie. “The standard of the dog coats was very impressive, especially as for many students it was their first time using a sewing machine and making a textile product from scratch. The coats fitted really well and Lola could wear some of the more traditional designs safely and comfortably every day.” she continued.
The students all aged just 13 and 14 produced 16 outfits in total in just 8 weeks. “I really loved this project as it was so different to anything else I have done.” commented student, Ella Kolk. “The best part was seeing Lola actually wearing the outfits we had designed and made.” added fellow student Jan Nica Ilao. Hey Presto “Do you like my new bowl for the Potatoes ? “ Vera asked her daughter . “Erm... Yes ... It’s ... Rather unusual “she replied. “Where did you buy it from?” “I didn’t buy it, your father saved it from the washing machine door that broke” Vera exclaimed as she dished out the steaming Maris Pipers onto her daughters plate. Harold Preston was a coal miner, a salt of the earth man’s man. He could turn his hand to anything. No job was too big and he never relied on someone else to do a job for him. He was an inventor and an original upcycler if you will. His Grandson and biggest Fan Matthew was in awe of him so much that he would often stand in Harold’s garage getting under his feet intrigued at what his grandad was making. Harold didn’t mind as he’d had three daughters and Matthew was the rogue little lad who caused mischief that reminded him so much of himself when he was a boy. Spring forward to a couple of years ago and Harold Preston passed away in his retirement home after suffering 3 major strokes and a cancerous tumour in his face. His grandson Matthew was by his side when he died. “I want to be just like you” he thought as Harold expelled his last breath. Matthew started to view things in the world differently. He decided that he would teach himself minor mechanics, engineering and electronics and set about converting old lost forgotten items into purposeful attractive objects.
Hey-Presto! Was started, the name derived from Harold Preston’s name as a nod to where the inspiration came from. Over the last 18 months Matthew or Matt as he prefers has produced some superbly made home decor items. Absorbing influences from Steampunk, Industrial, Vintage and Retro themes into his work, Matt doesn’t like to be stagnant and stick to one idea. He normally has half a dozen or so projects on the go at the same time. He prefers to work like this as some of his best ideas come when he’s working on something else completely different. Something that stands out in his work is the fact he likes to incorporate original features and use them to work as part of the piece. Matt’s forte is lighting, especially table lamps and he’s previously converted old electrical testing equipment and made it interactive by using original switches to animate the lamp itself. Matt believes it’s important to not only make something nice to look at but something to enjoy using too. With new, bigger and more elaborate projects coming in 2016 it’s certainly going to be an exciting time for the Hey-Presto customer.
Weird and wonderful creations taking inspiration from Steampunk, Vintage, Retro and industrial. Giving new life and purpose to things for use in the home

BEST KEPT VILLAGE COMPETITION 2016 “READY TO GO WITH BKV, AGAIN!” Everything is in place for this year’s Best Kept Village Competition. Entries from villages have been received and documented, the judging teams have been organised and villages will have finalised their arrangements for keeping their villages tidy through the judging period. John Perry, MBE, Chairman of the Best Kept Village Working Group, which organises the BKV competition on behalf of the Community Council of Staffordshire said: “We have held the Judges’ Meeting and set up the judging teams for the 1st and 2nd rounds of judging. This meeting gives us a chance to clarify a few minor changes to how we will mark BKV this year, to brief judges and give them the chance to discuss marking in general. Our aim is to achieve fair and consistent judging of all the villages which have entered BKV to match the commitment and hard work which villages have already put in and will continue to do so throughout the next few months.”
The first and second rounds of judging took place throughout May and June. The three Best Large and the three Best Small villages in the five areas of the county will then be judged again in early July. Then the Best Large and Small villages will be judges again in the County Finals in late July and the overall winners will be revealed. The results of the BKV competition will be announced at the now traditional Presentation Evening on 1st August.
Fifty-four villages have entered this year, which is just a bit down on 2015. Stonnall has re-entered BKV after an absence of several years and Tutbury, which has entered every year but one since 1956, has entered again. The quality of the entries looks very good overall and it is obvious that villages have already put in a lot of hard work before the judging begins. There is bound to be close competition for top honours in 2016, but BKV is not all about winning the competition. Many villages probably feel that they don’t have a realistic chance of winning at Area or County level. Nevertheless, they will be determined to do their very best and to achieve a really high level of care and maintenance throughout their village this year. Many villagers throughout Staffordshire are very proud of where they live and will put in time and effort to ensure that their village is as clean and tidy as possible, that there is no litter or dog mess to be seen, that churchyards, open spaces large and small, pub surrounds and play areas are all well looked after; and front gardens are cared for.
30
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2016
John Perry said: “You are bound to see plenty of activity throughout the BKV villages over the next three months or so. People will be doing regular litter picks, groups will be working in churchyards and small open spaces, and others will be keeping noticeboards, BKV posters and children’s poster displays up to scratch. In short, a great deal of work will be going on to keep village environments up to scratch. They will all be putting in that bit more effort than they might do throughout the rest of the year to make sure that their particular village looks as well as it can.” There will also be children’s poster and poetry competitions for the 5-7 and 8-11 age groups. The In Remembrance competition for older children and teenagers will also be held again and their will be a photographic and painting competition on the theme of “The Spirit of BKV” for over 18s, again sponsored by David and Jim Owen, Sons of the “founder” of BKV, Sir Alfred Owen. There will be a separate presentation evening for these complementary competitions in early September.

Hardy sages for the flower garden Part 2. HELP ATTRACT BEES WITH LONG BLOOMS This time last year I wrote about the hardiest ornamental sages that come from Europe. This time it’s the turn of their more exotic looking cousins from Central and South America. Many of these are also hardy in our winters but you need to take some care in selecting varieties as there are also lots of tender ones that need to be taken indoors in winter. The hardy types have become a mainstay of my garden because they bloom for so long and attract lots of bees. Among the toughest is Salvia macrophylla which forms a woody, upright shrub about 2ft (60cm) tall and has wrinkly leaves and brightly coloured flowers from June through to October. The best of these is “Pink Blush” with masses of vivid pink flowers that just won’t be ignored! Salvia microphylla is equally as tough and is known as Blackcurrant Sage – just rub a leaf and smell to discover why. These grow to a more domed, eventually sprawling shrub about 2ft (60cm) tall. There are lots of lovely colours available. “Hot Lips” is very popular at the moment; these has red-lipped, white flowers in summer. In cooler weather the flowers may be all white or even all red. One of my favourites is “Trelissick Creamy Yellow” with her pale yellow flowers that have a hint of warm pink at their necks.
Salvia “Icing Sugar” is even smaller at 1ft (30cm) tall and is clothed with delightful two-tone pink flowers throughout the summer.
Anise Sage (Salvia guaranitica) grows from a tuber in much the same way as a Dahlia and it can be treated like a Dahlia: if you leave your Dahlia tubers in the ground over winter you can do the same with these tuberous Sages, otherwise dig them up in early winter and pot them up and keep them in a porch or cold greenhouse until early spring when you can start watering them again. If you leave them in the ground don’t be surprised if you don’t see any growth until late April or early May. The hardiest varieties are “Blue Enigma” and “Black and Blue”. For something really different and impressive why not give Bolivian Sage (Salvia atrocyanea) a try? But remember to give it ample space as it will grow to about 6-7 feet (2 metres) tall and its long, arching stems will be clothed in dramatic blue flowers from August onwards. It is completely herbaceous – that is it dies down every winter and comes back up again from underground each spring. It is completely hardy in well-drained soil. I’ve only scratched the surface of the wonderful world of ornamental sages there are literally thousands of species and varieties out there waiting for a home in your garden. Janet & I run Special Perennials, website www.specialperennials.com We will be at Plant Hunters’ Fairs at Hodnet Hall Gardens (TF9 3NN) on Sat/ Sun 4th/5th June, gardens/plant fair special price only £3.50 (Normal garden entry £6.50). Sugnall Walled Garden (ST21 6NF) Sun 3rd July, fair/ gardens £1.00 entry. Henbury Hall, Macclesfield (SK11 9PJ) Sat/Sun 16th/17th July, gardens/fair £2.50 and at Battlefield 1403 Shrewsbury (SY4 3DB) on Sat 30th July, free entry to plant fair. See www.planthuntersfairs.co.uk We are happy to bring orders to plant fairs for you to collect.
New to the garden is “Wendy’s Wish”. The large, tubular pink flowers and arching stems make it ideal for a sheltered spot at the front of the border. All of these types need some sun and will survive the winter in a well-drained soil. If you have a wet soil in winter then they make ideal plants for patio pots, but remember to keep the pots somewhere out of heavy frost in winter. All are best pruned back in spring to a nice shape to stop them getting too leggy. 32

Stafford and Stone Schools ‘Gotta Dance’ Festival. AFTER MONTHS OF ANTICIPATION AND HARD WORK
adds to the buzz of performing on stage. It was great to see all their hard work pay off and they already can’t wait for their next performance!” Ballet and musical theatre teacher Nicole Manning was also particularly happy for her groups, “The children and the excitement has been building for the show for weeks now so we are just really glad it went to plan and that the children made the most of this fantastic opportunity with smiles on their faces.”
After months of anticipation and hard work by local children and their dance teachers the Stafford and Stone Schools ‘Gotta Dance’ Festival took place at Stafford’s Gatehouse Theatre across four evenings between Wednesday 27th and Saturday 30th April 2016. The annual event, organised by Stafford Sports and Performance Academy, continues to grow year on year in popularity and this year was no exception with over 1000 young people from 25 schools and local dance groups from across Staffordshire performing in front of packed audiences of friends and family. Each weekday evening saw these audiences entertained by a variety of local school and a select group of Stafford Sports and Performance Academy dance groups as well as local acts such as ‘Dappa Dance’. Talented soloists also performed across the evening to provide extra musical entertainment. The Saturday show took on a slightly different spin and showcased all of the Stafford Sports and Performance Academy dance groups, with specialist groups performing a variety of ballet and musical theatre through to contemporary and street dance.
As always thanks must go to the technical and front of house teams at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre, as well as to all the school staff members who made the event possible. Gary and the team at GCG Photography were also with us each evening and really caught the emotions of the week well, so thanks must also go to them. Plans for the 2017 event are already being made so please keep these dates free: Wednesday 26th, Thursday 27th, Friday 28th and Saturday 29th April. Returning as well as new school acts welcome!
Stafford Sports and Performance Academy Street and contemporary dance teacher Hayley Wenlock said “This show is the highlight of the year for all of our groups as the audience always gets really behind the children, which just

RECIPE
Makes 8 By Mike Whitehurst
ROGAN JOSH BURGER
IN TEACAKE BUN WITH SWEET POTATO FRIES & RAITHA Something different for your barbecue this coming summer - if your barbecuing on a Saturday you need to start this recipe on a Thursday evening to allow flavours to develop inside the meat. BURGER PATTIE INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •
1 thumb sized piece of fresh ginger - peel and grate 8 cloves of garlic also grated 1 tsp of turmeric 1 tsp of ground cinnamon 1 small bunch of chopped fresh mint leaves 1 tsp of crushed white or black peppercorns 1.4 kilo of good quality shoulder of lamb minced
Thoroughly mix the above ingredients together and store in the fridge overnight • • • • • • • •
1 onion finely diced or grated 2 red chillies, deseeded and finely diced 1 tbsp of fresh coriander stalks finely sliced 4 green cardamom pods remove seeds, toast and crush in pestle and mortar 4 cloves toasted and crushed in pestle and mortar 2 tsp of cayenne pepper 2 tsp of Maldon sea salt 1 tsp of tomato puree
Mix the above into the lamb mince, shape into 8 large burger patties (they will shrink) and return back to the fridge over night - you may need to sit the chopped ingredients in a sieve for a while as you don’t want the mix to be wet. If the burgers do appear a little wet just add in some breadcrumbs. TEACAKE INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • •
400g of strong white bread flour pinch of sea salt 7g sachet of fast action yeast 1 tsp of ground mixed spice 1 tsp of cinnamon 1 tsp of grated nutmeg zest of half a lemon 50g of caster sugar 50g of diced unsalted butter 150ml of milk 1 medium egg beaten 125g of green raisins a spray can of oil
until the butter has melted then remove from the heat and whisk in the egg. Make a well in the centre of the flour and pour in the warm milk mix stirring until a dough comes together. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes and then add the fruit and make sure it is evenly distributed throughout the dough. Spray a glass bowl with oil and place the dough inside covered with a piece of oiled cling film. Leave this for about 2 hours or doubled in size and bounces back when pressed in. Divide the dough into 8, roll into balls folding the corners in on each other and tucking underneath then roll out to about 1cm thickness. Place on your baking tray and cover with oiled cling film and then leave to rise for about an hour. Remove the clingfilm and bake for about 18 minutes at 190oC. Once risen and golden allow to cool ready to be toasted. GARNISH • 1 small fennel bulb very finely shaved on a mandolin or grated • half a cucumber with seeds removed and very finely sliced • 1 finely sliced red onion • a few sprigs of dill • leaves from the coriander • paneer cheese
TEACAKE METHOD
RAITHA
Mix the dry ingredients together apart from the raisins. Slowly warm the milk and butter together in a pan
• 500g of natural yoghurt

Restaurant Review
Indian Cuisine Situated in the countryside in a beautiful barn conversion in Featherstone near Wolverhampton, The King’s Repose is a high quality and highly recommended Indian restaurant. With hosts Lee, Misbah and Monseur who have ran the successful restaurant since 1996, it is no wonder that they have many returning customers and new customers week in week out. They were awarded again in 2016 a five star rating from ‘ Rate My Place’ which is a prestigious award, awarded by the local council for the outstanding achievement and contribution to the pursuit of excellent food and service which monitors food hygiene and general standards. Using only the best ingredients with a wonderful combination of subtle flavours and tastes, blending fragrant and exotic spices from the Indian continent. Each dish at The King’s Repose has its own individual flavour and aroma from the herbs and spices specially prepared by the Master Chef Misbah. This evening my partner and I were delighted to be returning to the award winning, King’s Repose in Featherstone. After parking on the free secure car park to the front of the restaurant we stepped out of the car and could immediately smell the beautiful aromas.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2016
We were greeted at the entrance by Monsieur who remembered us from our previous visit and were taken through to the bar area where we both ordered a Cobra beer each and began to peruse the menu. With so many tempting dishes to choose from we didn’t know where to begin. For our starters we decided on samosa and vegetable Bengali stuffed rolls along with poppadums and dips. For our mains we opted for a South Indian Garlic Chilli Murgh - Barbecued chicken pieces cooked in fresh garlic & chilli sauce with fresh coriander & green chilli (£8.95) and also a Chingri Sagwala - King prawns, cooked in herbs & spices, garnished with green chillies (£14.95), to accompany our mains we also ordered pilau rice and a peshwari naan to share. Once our order was completed we were taken upstairs in the restaurant Open to a lovely table in from 5.30pm front of the huge arched window overlooking the grounds.
Once we were settled our starters arrived and we were both very pleased. Both dishes had great flavours and fresh ingredients and were finished rather quickly!

Our main courses were presented shortly after and looked delicious. We shared each of the dishes and both were beautifully cooked and generous in proportion. The famous Kings Repose King Prawns were huge(7days and so tasty. Again these dishes were Midnight a week) polished off in no time.

LEGS FIT FOR SUMMER TREATING VARICOSE VEINS
Varicose veins are very common and affect more than one in three adults. British research published in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology shows that more men (40%) suffer from varicose veins than women (32%), yet figures compiled by Nuffield Health show that treatment is mainly sought by women. Often hereditary in cause, they occur because the valves of your veins weaken and fail to work effectively. The National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE) now advises minimally invasive surgery under local anaesthetic, where patients can walk in and walk out within a couple of hours and quickly return to driving and normal activities.
methods for varicose veins, including stripping the vein from the top of the groin. Mr Garnham explains that nowadays, with more technology available, guided treatment is almost painless and the results are much better. Andrew Garnham says, “In deciding when to have your veins treated, usually the sooner the better for the best results and, of course, to ease any discomfort. With local anaesthetic and short treatment time needed, recovery is quick and there is minimal bruising, scarring or swelling, so you can both look and feel better sooner. “
When the sun comes out, people are more likely to think of exposing their legs to the elements. Those, who have been putting off surgery, may feel inclined to find out more about available treatments for their blue lumpy veins. Sadly for patients, the NHS no longer offers treatment for the majority of patients. When the vein valves weaken, blood pools in certain areas and this can cause painful and unsightly bulges at the skin’s surface. Symptoms include aching and itching, swelling and restless legs at night and the sensation of throbbing over the vein. If left untreated, this can lead to bleeding, eczema, phlebitis and potentially leg ulcers, which take a long time to heal. Wolverhampton surgeons, Nuffield Health’s Mr Simon Hobbs and Mr Andrew Garnham have been consultant vascular surgeons for several years and, back in their training days, can still remember the older treatment 50
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2016
During a consultation, an ultra sound scan will detect the source of the problem and from the size and position, indicate the required treatment. This could be endothermal ablation using a radio-frequency catheter for varicose veins or micro sclerotherapy for thread veins or a combination of the two. These methods have a 95% success rate, so that further treatment is unlikely to be required for at least 5-7 years. For patients who pay for themselves, prices for outpatient varicose vein treatment at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital start from £350.
On the evening of Tuesday 21st June, Mr Garnham and Mr Hobbs will be hosting a free open event on this subject at the Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital. To book a free place at the Let’s Talk Veins event, please ring 01902 267619.

June WHEN YOU CAN TAKE YOUR DOG TO WORK FOR A DAY. The Latin name for June is Junius. Most say the month is named after the Roman goddess Juno, wife of the supreme deity Jupiter. She was the goddess of marriage and a married couple’s household. It was therefore considered good luck to get married in ‘her’ month. There is an alternative suggestion that the name comes from the Latin word iuniores, meaning “younger ones”, as opposed to maiores (“elders”) for which the preceding month May(Maius) may be named. June’s birth flowers are the rose or the honeysuckle and birthstones the pearl, the moonstone, and the Alexandrite which all symbolize health and longevity. The zodiac signs for the month of June are Gemini (until June 21) and Cancer (June 22 onwards). Some quite interesting facts about June: Pixie Day is a tradition that takes place in Ottery St. Mary annually, dating from 1954, and based on a pamphlet written by R. F. Delderfield for the 500th anniversary of the installation of the bells of the Church of St. Mary, the event commemorates a legend of Ottery St. Mary’s ‘pixies’ being banished from the town (where they caused havoc) to a local cave known as ‘Pixies’ Parlour’. International Yoga Day is celebrated annually on June 21 and was declared to be internationally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. Friday 24th June 2016 is ‘Take your dog to work day’. (See Facebook) At the Chase CACI Clinic we are here to help you enjoy your health and longevity. The treatments we offer all contribute to a positive and healthy outlook on life. When we know we look our best it can give increased confidence. Our combination therapies help reduce lines, increase collagen production and give a healthy glow to the skin. The CACI Quantum machine can, in addition, help to tone and firm thighs, buttocks and stomachs. The Heaven Bee Venom products are producing wonderful outcomes. We are excited to be one of the first clinics to offer the latest Heaven treatment: the ‘Heaven Bee Peel’. This is an advanced variable and progressive treatment equivalent to an 18% Glycolic Peel, in other words a light chemical peel. The difference is that naturally occurring bee venom 52

is being used to produce the results. Both Pam and Becky are delighted with the results and are using the peel themselves. We are also delighted with the results that we are achieving with the ‘Fillerina’; a topical non - invasive filler. It works by using a syringe to apply the product directly into the lines that the client wishes to be reduced. Excellent results are being observed when using it for ‘lip plumps’. Below is an extract from ‘The Mail on Sunday’ after an investigator had completed a course of Fillerina: For an independent opinion, I had my skin assessed before and after at the Santi Skin Lab in South Kensington, Central London (santilondon.com). Staff used a Cortex machine, state-of-the-art skin analysis equipment which is used in dermatological research worldwide. I thought my skin was looking good, but what the Cortex machine told me was little short of amazing. ‘There is a remarkable change in skin structure,’ said Tariq Karim, director of Santi Skin Lab. ‘The skin on the forehead shows a considerable improvement.’ The hydration level of my skin increased by a huge 29 per cent from the starting point. For more information on our treatments please look at our website, give us a ring or send us an email or, best of all, book your free consultation, and take it from there!

SI CANNOCK & DISTRICT - CAROLE HOLDCROFT WOMEN INSPIRING ACTION, TRANSFORMING LIVES The new President of Soroptimist International Cannock & District is Carole Holdcroft. She was given the chain of office by out-going President Lynne Tuckley at the AGM held in April. In her final words to the Club Lynne reminded members of the highs and lows of the year: two of their much loved and well respected members had died, bringing sadness to the Club, but one member had married and others had become grand-parents, bringing much happiness. She thanked everyone who had worked to make the year such a success and enable the club to send donations amounting to £1,200 to Cannock Friends of St Giles and to Pathway, the local project helping women victims of domestic violence, as well as the lobbying about trafficking and FGM and the service given to aid local groups. She ended with her motto for the year: “Carpe Diem” - encouraging everyone to “Seize the Day”. As she took up her new position and addressed the Club, new President Carole first of all congratulated Immediate Past President Lynne and the Club for all that they had achieved over the year and Presented Lynne with flowers as a token of the Club’s appreciation. Carole told everyone that she felt very proud to be elected President of such a positive and hard working club and outlined some of the ideas she has for the year. Her chosen charity for the year is the Pathway Project - Carole has worked in a voluntary capacity to support them for over 20 years. Carole’s theme for the year is “Create some Smiles” - she told everyone that her wish for the year ahead is that it creates lots of smiles not only for club members but also for the women and girls that we will support this year. She promised to give 100% - and with a smile. Club members know Carole very well and know that this will indeed be the case. Carole has been a Soroptimist for almost 30 years - she became a Soroptimist in November 1986 - and has been involved in projects at local, national and international level. She has held many offices within the club including Treasurer, Membership Secretary; Programme Action Officer and the Club’s representative at Pathway. She is involved in other voluntary organisations including a First Responders group. Her professional background was as an accountant; she has also held positions as Company Secretary and Director of Engineering. All club members wished President Carole well and assured her of their support over the coming year as they continue to educate, empower and enable women and girls locally and globally.

Sue Starr Hypnotherapy COMMITMENT FACILITATES LONG LASTING CHANGE RATHER THAN A TEMPORARY FIX “Throughout the last year, my client base has continued to increase. Clinical Hypnotherapy continues to develop credibility as a leading alternative therapy and features in many media stories mostly for the right reasons! Our point of difference is that we include more behavioural tools, such as CBT and NLP, alongside Hypnotherapy to support clients in achieving their personal goals”. Sue Starr Hypnotherapy has over the last 3 years established itself as a leading practice in South Staffordshire. Sue continues “Teenagers and young children (as young as 6) are an increasing part of my client base; they tend to be great fun to work with and engage really well with therapy. The diversity of issues faced can range from low confidence, anxieties, exam pressures and bullying. GP and school referrals for this continue to highlight a broader shortage in support for young people where quick response is essential” As well as the regular client base, last summer saw an increase in people wanting Hypnotherapy prior to weddings. Best Man speeches, Bride confidence and self-esteem concerns have so far been supported by Sue, “Weddings are supposed to be the best day of a couples lives, however, this pressure of being in the spotlight, organising so much and wanting it to be perfect can be overwhelming. We help with the mindset so that the big day can be fully enjoyed by confident, in control Brides,
Grooms and the Best Man!” The most important thing is that a client really wants a beneficial change for themselves and that they are committed to making a change. Expecting a magic wand result with no hard work or challenges is not the case with Hypnotherapy. “Many people nowadays want quick fixes with no effort; Hypnotherapy requires dedication from the client to bring about change. But combining Hypnotherapy and client commitment facilitates long lasting change rather than a temporary fix!” Sue Starr Dip Hyp, DNLP, GQHP, GHRreg is a fully qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist and is registered with the General Hypnotherapy Register, General Hypnotherapy Standards Council, and the NHS recognised Complimentary & Natural Healthcare Council. Game of Thrones
BY ROB TAYLOR
ON THE THRONE OF THE FIAT 500X
You join me on the throne. No, not the colloquial “throne”, which lurks in the smallest room in the house and provokes much tittering from youngsters and men-children alike, but sitting high and mighty on the spot now most coveted by motorists: at the wheel of a crossover vehicle. More than ever manufacturers are taking car-jacks to their most beloved hatchbacks, then giving them the unenviable task of driving around while wearing massive stiletto heels. Often the end result is a fashion statement with few redeeming features, but where does the Fiat 500X fit in? OK, you might think, so it’s yet another small front-two-wheel drive premium crossover that aims to cash in on the baby 500’s cutesy looks, but that’s just not the case. Admittedly, owing to the enormous success of the Fiat 500, the Italian brand has understandably fallen victim to the most irresistible force presently sweeping across the automotive galaxy: the crossover vehicle – or specifically in this case, the B-segment crossover vehicle – but the Fiat 500X is a genuinely effective tool for modern life. Even though in the strictest sense 60
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2016
I’ve always been a fan of high-driving positions – better visibility, command of the road – I’ve always been a firm believer that there’s little to no justifiable reason for riding high just for the sake of it, to play Lord of Manor when on the school run. Similarly I see no point in hunting for extra space in any other way than by buying an estate. The 500X copes very well with changes of direction and its suspension irons out all but the worst lumps and bumps, providing a ride which is very smooth. The 120bhp 1.6 Multi-jet diesel engine makes mincemeat of the 500X’s modest kerb-weight – 1320kg – as well as almost any load you can bring to bear upon its ample proportions. I travelled down to the south coast on the M5 with three friends and copious kit (a 350 litre boot greedily ate all of our luggage) and the 500X performed admirably, dispatching any given motorway malady with a big slug of its sizeable 236lb ft of torque. The 500X’s cabin is well insulated and there’s little trace of noise from the outside world when up at speed. Driver-aids like Lane-Assist and Emergency Braking seem to work well, even in poor weather and at night. And yet despite its motorway might it retains all of the wieldy dexterity required for in-town tootling too:
parking is a cinch thanks to a reversing camera, as well as the 500X’s partypiece: all-round good visibility from its high-chair, which offers much adjustment for maximum comfort. In fact the seats are some of the best out there, supportive but not overly firm. Keeping us entertained on said journey was myriad pieces of kit on this Lounge spec model. Stand out favourite has to be the TomTom-connected sat-nav, which kept us on the straight and narrow. Besides this the cabin is a nice place in which to spend time: there’s chunky well-made switchgear, flash plastics and pleasing ergonomics allied to robust storage solutions. And since my all-time favourite readout displayed an average mpg of 55.6 mpg (official numbers 68.9 mpg/ 109 g/km Co2) at the end of my time with the 500X I was more than happy. Knowing that this model costs just over £20,000 pleases me too. For me riding high in a car still means being taller, heavier and ill-equipped to handle the sinuous B-roads that make this country great and you just don’t want that in a hatchback. In short, sitting lower makes for a better driving experience, but I’ve always been open to a car-maker being able to swerve around the inherent drawbacks and produce a crossover that can do it all. This 500X may just be that car.

The Course of Progress
BY ROB TAYLOR
RISE OF TURBOCHARGED THREE CYLINDER UNITS
Rarely do us Brits ever appreciate that things are broadly getting better when it comes to cars – or anything else for that matter. We are more likely to be heard to moan, as our forefathers have done for millennia, that ‘things aren’t as good as they used to be.’ Think about it: there have been people of every generation who have bemoaned progress of every kind; reviling it at every possible opportunity; all of them eager to banish as much as they can conceivably fit into their very own Room 101. Luddites smashed up heavy machinery; today’s Neo-Luddites want to smash up the Internet. When it comes to cars, the unswerving drive from our government to minimise emissions has given us irritating start-stop systems and electric power steering. Most of us would pluck these overly complex gizmos out of our cars in a heartbeat, but one good thing to come out of all this cosying up to our EU overlords is the downsizing of engines – specifically the sensational rise of turbocharged three cylinder units, like the one in the latest Vauxhall Corsa. This has proven to be a real gamechanger in the super-mini class especially, because it eschews the big but not too
62
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | JUNE 2016
clever idea of making small cars scaled down carbon copies of larger models in the range, rather than playing to their strengths. Big deal, you might say; I’m old, suffer from deep vein thrombosis and gave up on what’s under the bonnet at the age of 30. Well you – and most other people – won’t care too much about the differences these changes make until you get behind the wheel. And the baby engine in this fourth generation Corsa is a prime example. Opt for Vauxhall’s new three-cylinder turbo 1.0T EcoFlex unit and you won’t be disappointed. “What?!” I hear you cry, “A mere 998cc to lug around a car that weighs over 1645 kg, you must be mad.” Well, it produces 90 bhp and 123 lb ft of torque and so you will rarely be caught wanting for more. OK, so, it’s no hot hatch – that’s the VXR – but this engine is lively enough; it will do 0-60 mph in 11.9 seconds; is pretty tractable from low revs and is able to cruise quietly, thanks to a balancer shaft designed to remove the signature three cylinder thrum. This car really does ride and handle as well as it looks: that is to say very nicely indeed. I can’t remember any previousgen Corsa looking this good. Motorways are no problem either as once up and running you can cruise without any concern that the car is underpowered.
Get it out on a twisty open road and you’ll soon discover that the gearbox is a pleasant and willing companion, always egging you to shift sharper and more precisely, while maximising every one of the 90 available horses. Put it into city confines and you’ll enjoy the ‘City’ steering button that takes every effort away. This Corsa provides an impressive official combined fuel economy number of 64.2 mpg too, although when you inevitably drive it as I did (as in: always keen to exploit the zesty engine’s fun-loving character), don’t expect to see such heady headline-grabbing figures. I averaged around 45.6 mpg. Emissions are more finite however and are listed at 104 g/km Co2. The Corsa’s interior space grabs your attention. Happily, the SRI model I have here is chock-full of all the best bits the range has to offer and is the sybaritic car of choice, with 16” black alloys, air conditioning, sports seats, a leather covered steering wheel, LED running lights, cruise control, and Bluetooth connectivity. And you get it all for £14,150, although I’d recommend lowerspec’d models, as the range starts at just £8,995. Buy one with this engine and I guarantee you won’t regret it. It’ll make you feel like a 17 year old again, in the best ways imaginable.
