Happy 4th Birthday Staffordshire Outlook CELEBRATING OUR 4 TH YEAR IN BUSINESS

Here at the Staffordshire Outlook, we are celebrating our 4th anniversary in April! We are so grateful to all of the clients who continue to advertise their business and to the readers for contributing to the Staffordshire Outlook Magazine’s popularity and success. Sales Director Sharon Caldwell says “I cannot believe how the last four years has flown by. I didn’t think when I started the magazine that it would be as successful as it has been to date. I have such great feedback from the readers of the magazine, and they comment on how local the content of the magazine is.This was my main objective when I started the Staffordshire Outlook. The comments I receive every month off my clients is fantastic, and it makes me so proud that the Staffordshire Outlook is bringing new customers and increasing their profit. I want to thank you, the readers of the magazine and hopefully you will continue to support the Staffordshire Outlook.”

The Chase CACI Clinic is a fledgling business and as such advertising as vitally important. We were approached by many companies who offered differing advertising services. We tried several of them (most with limited success). We were then recommended to contact Sharon at Staffordshire Outlook by one of her many satisfied customers and since then have not looked back. The quality of the magazine is superb, it is distributed over a wide area and, as it is bi -monthly, people do not get fed up with it. The responses we have had via the magazine have far outstripped any other form of advertising and that is why we are sticking with it. Sharon is a delight to work with and so helpful. If we had only met Sharon first we would have saved a lot of money on ineffectual advertising.

Doug & Pam at The Chase CACI Clinic Tech Alum Systems Ltd would like to say a big thank you to Sharon at the Staffordshire Outlook for her efforts in helping us put our adverts together. We have advertised in the magazine for the past 17 months and have found the response excellent.

Please see right a few client testimonials who are advertising their business in the magazine with great results.

Our main objective has been to raise our profile in the Staffordshire area, and the Staffordshire Outlook magazine has certainly done this for us! A great local magazine packed with useful information. We will definitely continue to advertise our business in the magazine and would recommend using the magazine to advertise your business; it’s increased our sales and could do the same for your business! Congratulations to all at the Staffordshire Outlook on your 4th Birthday and hope you are around for many more years!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted

up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when

we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Cannock and Stafford areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the

personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Excellent service at Ralvern Ltd ALWAYS EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE Ralvern Ltd have long been providing their customers with an exceptional service, ever since the business was first established by Ralf Collis in 1946. Now his grandsons, identical twins Simon and Chris Edwards, run the well-established family business and the same commitment to excellent customer service is still in place.

It’s not just making bespoke designs that Ralvern takes care of though, the team also offer a complete reupholstery service. “If you can’t bear to part with your existing suite, we offer a superior reupholstery service that goes above and beyond recovering your choice of fabric and leathers.” The team can recreate the original suite to an even higher standard than it was originally built.

Manufacturing all manner of sofas, settees, chairs, chaise lounge and occasional chairs from their base in Cannock, the company can create any type of design - from ultramodern to classically traditional. “Our highly skilled craftsmen can create any look our customers want for their home. We offer a really helpful and welcoming approach and enjoy exceeding customer’s expectations,” says Simon. There are no salesmen at Ralvern and clients deal direct with myself and Chris: “We have a very personal approach to customer relations and want to take care of customers ourselves, that’s why we cut out the salesmen, so that we can offer a unique, personal and relaxed approach.”

“As a standard we strip your lounge sofas back to the frame and start from scratch, using superior foams, fillings, springs and cushions. The sofa is then finished by our highly experienced craftsmen to achieve a truly unique lounge setting.” Ralvern will collect your existing suite from home, offer you a replacement whilst work is carried out and deliver the finished suite once completed.

In-house frame making enables clients to design their lounge from concept, because all frames at Ralvern are made from scratch. “We only use the best materials and we have the freedom to create sizes and designs that will suit any room and taste. We include a lifetime frame, six inch coil springs and our build quality is always exceptional.” And the company are well known for their excellent standards, establishing an excellent reputation over the 70 years they’ve been in business. “Our gallery of fabric books perfectly illustrates our capacity to create almost any type of design, using our experience, drive and passion.”

Desirable Daisies

FROM LOW GROWING TO 8FT GIANTS, DAISIES ARE ONE OF THE GLORIES OF SUMMER For the lawn-proud garden owner daisies are weeds to be fought with and removed at all costs. For the flower gardener the daisy family are one of the glories of summer and the most desirable flowering plants. From low growing carpeters to 8ft giants for the back of the border there is a daisy for every garden. This month I’ll share some of my favourites from my own garden with you.

yellow rudbeckias will also grow well in dappled shade. We all loved growing annual sunflowers as kids and there are some less tall perennial types to choose for the garden. Their flowers are smaller but very numerous. “Happy Days” is only 3ft (90cm) tall with large flowers whereas “Lemon Queen” will get to 6ft (180cm) tall and has masses of pale yellow flowers in autumn. Some are scented – the variety “Bitter Chocolate” smells exactly like that!

Technically daisies are members of the Aster (or Michaelmas daisy) family and all have a rayed petals and a disc or cone at the centre and all share the same attractiveness to bees and butterflies

Coreopsis (common name Tickseed) are popular lowgrowing plants but some are not hardy here. We grow the reliable Zagreb and the beautiful pale yellow Moonbeam as these are hardy for us. These will spread to form a good sized clump and are easy to divide in spring.

Let’s start with Asters, those late bloomers that come in a range of colours from white, through pink, lavender to the dark purple. The best of these is the variety “Mônch”, which blooms from August and never gets mildew. I also love the tall growing “Calliope” who has black stems, glossy leaves and flowers in October and November. Aster need a reasonably sunny spot and soil that holds some moisture so mulch them well in spring. For brighter colours you can’t do better than Heleniums – one of my passions. We hold the National Collection and have a good range in our catalogue. These are certainly sun lovers and come in shades of red, orange and yellow. Perhaps best known as tall plants for the back of the border blooming in August and September there are also some new, shorter ones that start flowering in late June: “Red Army” is bright red and 2ft (60cm) tall and “Mardi Gras” is a similar height with flowers that blend red, orange and yellow. “Sahin’s Early Flowerer” has similar flowers but is nearly 3ft tall. “El Dorado” is one of the best new varieties with large golden yellow flowers. He is about 2ft 6in tall (75cm) but doesn’t need staking. “Flaming Katy” is taller and a fiery orange-red. Two closely related plants are commonly known as Cone Flowers: the pink or white Echinaceas and the yellow Rudbeckias. In our garden we find the old varieties are more reliable than the many new ones. For Echinacea I recommend “Ruby Star” (bright pink) and “White Swan” and for Rudbeckias the soundly perennial “Deamii” and “Goldsturm”. For a really tall one try “Herbstsonne” (“Autumn Sun”), which will grow 6ft (180cm) tall. The 14

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY 2016

Shasta daisies (Leucanthemum) were once common cottage garden plants and they are making a comeback as gardeners remember just how easy and reliable they are. Most are white although there are a few pale yellow varieties to be had. My favourite is “Beauté Nivelloise” which one cheeky customer renamed “bad hair day” after the wayward look of the petals. “Fiona Coghill” has large, ball-shaped flowers that remind me of a florist’s Chrysanthemum. Shasta Daisies love a well-drained sunny spot and will survive drought well.

We are used to buying African Daisies (Osteospermum) as half-harder summer bedding but there are a few winter hardy ones to find. The white “Lady Leitrim” has been in my family’s gardens for at least four generations and always survives even the hardest winter provided the soil is welldrained. She will flower from May to early winter. There’s sure to be a member of daisy family to suit your garden; keep an eye open for those lovely flowers. Janet & I run Special Perennials, website www.specialperennials.com We will be at Weston Park (TF11 8LE) Sunday/Monday 1st /2nd May £3.00 (Normal garden entry £6.50) gardens/fair and Middleton Hall (B78 2AE) 22nd May £2.00 gardens/ fair/hall. Cannock Chase Trekking Centre NEW DEVELOPMENT WILL ATTRACT NEW VISITORS TO CANNOCK CHASE An ambitious new development which will attract extra visitors to Cannock Chase and create several new jobs is under construction after six years of planning. The redevelopment of Cannock Chase Trekking Centre, near Penkridge, is the long-term dream of proprietor Lisa Gregory, who opened her riding stables, just off the A34, nearly 21 years ago. Planning permission for a new equestrian centre was granted by South Staffs District Council and the contractors have now begun work.

“This development is a long-held dream of mine,” said Miss Gregory, who is keeping the centre open to riders during the duration of the project. “We already have riders coming to us from all over the country and I am sure our state-of-the-art centre will bring even more visitors to Cannock Chase.

The first phase of the development will provide an indoor riding arena and a cedar and glass construction visitors’ centre which will include a contemporary coffee shop with an outdoor viewing area where visitors will be able to enjoy watching the horses and views across Cannock Chase, conference and training facilities, changing and shower facilities and an equestrian shop.

20

Phase two will provide 46 new stables, with tack rooms, washing areas, laundry rooms and foaling boxes. Work should be completed by early summer.

“We have some of the most beautiful riding and walking country in the Midlands and our new coffee shop will be open to the public as well as to our riders. This will be an important development for tourism in the area.”

The trekking centre is a hugely popular attraction in Staffordshire and brings more than 17,000 visitors to the Chase every year.

For further information please contact Miss Gregory at 01785 711177

Hey Presto “Do you like my new bowl for the Potatoes ? “ Vera asked her daughter . “Erm... Yes ... It’s ... Rather unusual “she replied. “Where did you buy it from?” “I didn’t buy it, your father saved it from the washing machine door that broke” Vera exclaimed as she dished out the steaming Maris Pipers onto her daughters plate. Harold Preston was a coal miner, a salt of the earth man’s man. He could turn his hand to anything. No job was too big and he never relied on someone else to do a job for him. He was an inventor and an original upcycler if you will. His Grandson and biggest Fan Matthew was in awe of him so much that he would often stand in Harold’s garage getting under his feet intrigued at what his grandad was making. Harold didn’t mind as he’d had three daughters and Matthew was the rogue little lad who caused mischief that reminded him so much of himself when he was a boy. Spring forward to a couple of years ago and Harold Preston passed away in his retirement home after suffering 3 major strokes and a cancerous tumour in his face. His grandson Matthew was by his side when he died. “I want to be just like you” he thought as Harold expelled his last breath. Matthew started to view things in the world differently. He decided that he would teach himself minor mechanics, engineering and electronics and set about converting old lost forgotten items into purposeful attractive objects.

Hey-Presto! Was started, the name derived from Harold Preston’s name as a nod to where the inspiration came from. Over the last 18 months Matthew or Matt as he prefers has produced some superbly made home decor items. Absorbing influences from Steampunk, Industrial, Vintage and Retro themes into his work, Matt doesn’t like to be stagnant and stick to one idea. He normally has half a dozen or so projects on the go at the same time. He prefers to work like this as some of his best ideas come when he’s working on something else completely different. Something that stands out in his work is the fact he likes to incorporate original features and use them to work as part of the piece. Matt’s forte is lighting, especially table lamps and he’s previously converted old electrical testing equipment and made it interactive by using original switches to animate the lamp itself. Matt believes it’s important to not only make something nice to look at but something to enjoy using too. With new, bigger and more elaborate projects coming in 2016 it’s certainly going to be an exciting time for the Hey-Presto customer.

Weird and wonderful creations taking inspiration from Steampunk, Vintage, Retro and industrial. Giving new life and purpose to things for use in the home

Work due to start on artificial grass pitch SUPPORTED BY SPORTS ENGLAND Local Councillors from Cannock Chase Council visit the proposed site for an artificial grass pitch on Bradbury Lane in Hednesford. Members were invited to look at plans for an artificial grass pitch (AGP) which include a fenced full-sized floodlit 3G artificial grass pitch (AGP) and a new changing pavilion at the site of the former West Cannock Sports and Social Club on Bradbury Lane in Hednesford. In February 2015 Cannock Council were awarded £390,039 from Sports England towards this scheme, which will bring the dis-used site back into constructive use for sport and active recreation. The site has not been used since 2008. Councillor Christine Mitchell, Portfolio Leader for Culture and Sport said “It has been a long process from the planning stage, so I am delighted that work will start on the artificial grass pitch this Spring/Summer. The Council has a major role in contributing to the promotion and delivery of increased participation in sport, recreation and physical activity. This provision of a first class sports and recreation facility will meet the needs of the community and benefit the whole District.”

38

RECIPE

Makes 8 By Mike Whitehurst

ROGAN JOSH BURGER

IN TEACAKE BUN WITH SWEET POTATO FRIES & RAITHA Something different for your barbecue this coming summer - if your barbecuing on a Saturday you need to start this recipe on a Thursday evening to allow flavours to develop inside the meat. BURGER PATTIE INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •

1 thumb sized piece of fresh ginger - peel and grate 8 cloves of garlic also grated 1 tsp of turmeric 1 tsp of ground cinnamon 1 small bunch of chopped fresh mint leaves 1 tsp of crushed white or black peppercorns 1.4 kilo of good quality shoulder of lamb minced

Thoroughly mix the above ingredients together and store in the fridge overnight • • • • • • • •

1 onion finely diced or grated 2 red chillies, deseeded and finely diced 1 tbsp of fresh coriander stalks finely sliced 4 green cardamom pods remove seeds, toast and crush in pestle and mortar 4 cloves toasted and crushed in pestle and mortar 2 tsp of cayenne pepper 2 tsp of Maldon sea salt 1 tsp of tomato puree

Mix the above into the lamb mince, shape into 8 large burger patties (they will shrink) and return back to the fridge over night - you may need to sit the chopped ingredients in a sieve for a while as you don’t want the mix to be wet. If the burgers do appear a little wet just add in some breadcrumbs. TEACAKE INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • •

400g of strong white bread flour pinch of sea salt 7g sachet of fast action yeast 1 tsp of ground mixed spice 1 tsp of cinnamon 1 tsp of grated nutmeg zest of half a lemon 50g of caster sugar 50g of diced unsalted butter 150ml of milk 1 medium egg beaten 125g of green raisins a spray can of oil

until the butter has melted then remove from the heat and whisk in the egg. Make a well in the centre of the flour and pour in the warm milk mix stirring until a dough comes together. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes and then add the fruit and make sure it is evenly distributed throughout the dough. Spray a glass bowl with oil and place the dough inside covered with a piece of oiled cling film. Leave this for about 2 hours or doubled in size and bounces back when pressed in. Divide the dough into 8, roll into balls folding the corners in on each other and tucking underneath then roll out to about 1cm thickness. Place on your baking tray and cover with oiled cling film and then leave to rise for about an hour. Remove the clingfilm and bake for about 18 minutes at 190oC. Once risen and golden allow to cool ready to be toasted. GARNISH • 1 small fennel bulb very finely shaved on a mandolin or grated • half a cucumber with seeds removed and very finely sliced • 1 finely sliced red onion • a few sprigs of dill • leaves from the coriander • paneer cheese

TEACAKE METHOD

RAITHA

Mix the dry ingredients together apart from the raisins. Slowly warm the milk and butter together in a pan

• 500g of natural yoghurt

TARQUINS CORNISH GIN

Hi and welcome to our new wine and spirits feature. My name is Ian Martin owner of Wines etc Eccleshall, we are an independent wine shop supplying the very best in unusual drinks and spirits from around the world. On this page I will be showcasing all that’s best in the drinks trade and giving you advice on tasting notes for you to try the fabulous selections we have chosen for you each month.

£35.99

Juniper is prevalent – as it should be – but a strong lemony coriander reminds us of a deep pine forest on a hot Summer stroll – earthy notes and warm orange blossom faintly joining in. Served best with your favourite tonic and a slice of lemon.

BUS 509 PINK GRAPEFRUIT GIN £43.99

Our first selection features some great Gins to get you in the mood for summer and some classic whites and reds that will compliment any occasion. Add in a local rose and we have something for everyone this month.

Packed with citrus notes, this Buss No.509 Gin features red Californian grapefruit as a botanical, along with Juniper, Coriander, Liquorice, Angelica, Vanilla, Cardamom, Iris, Orange and Lemon. Bright and flavoursome, this Belgian gin would make for a fine aperitif or serve with fever tree tonic over loads of ice and a pink grapefruit slice to finish.

LOUIS LATOUR BROUILLY £13.25

Having a lovely deep garnet colour. The nose reveals aromas of pear-drops and banana, typical of the Gamay varietal. It is round and smooth with nice balance and lasting flavours

SECRET MALBEC £9.99 Malbec very much as you picture it: Full and juicy, smooth and satisfying, and with the guaranteed trademark long, long length. Wine this good won’t be much of a Secret for long.

WAVE RIDER SAUVIGNON BLANC £10.50 Fresh and crisp with a great combination of tropical fruits and grassy herbaceous characters plus a ripe citrusy freshness on the finish. A perfect Marlborough Sauvignon

LANGOT VALLEY ROSE £8.99 Grown and harvested just 5 miles from Eccleshall by Arthur Malpass this medium-dry rose has a good nose with strawberry fruit flavours, best served at 12 to 14 degrees

Blue Ginger INDIAN RESTAURANT RE-OPENS AFTER TRANSFORMATION Having dined at Blue Ginger previously, my partner and I were excited to be returning after the restaurant refurbishment. We parked on the large free car park which is to the front of the restaurant and made our way inside. “Wow, what a transformation” Welcoming us into the restaurant, Abdul Karim the owner of Blue Ginger explained that he and his staff had been running the restaurant for their 4th year, and are very excited to welcome back new and returning customers after being closed since September 2015. Abdul said “We want to welcome back all of our friends/customers to the newly refurbished restaurant, we also have some great offers available”

Whilst browsing through the menu the waiter explained that all the main dishes including the specials were 2 for 1 (Monday to Wednesday when dining in the restaurant) and also a 5 course meal which includes Popadom, Starter, Main Meal, Rice or Nan and a coffee for just £9.95 per person Sunday & Thursday only, when dining in the restaurant.

We were shown to our table, and given the menus. Aziz, our waiter asked if we would like to order drinks, we both opted for our favourite, Kingfisher lager which is served on draught.

My partner and I were absolutely spoilt for choice, the menu has something for everyone, whether it is a traditional Indian dish or a dish off the specials section of the menu, which I must say sounded very tasty!! Traditional starters are priced at £2.95 - £4.95 and fusion appetizers from £3.50 - £9.95. Main courses start at £5.95 - £10.95. Aziz returned to our table to take our order and was very helpful and recommended dishes to us after asking what our preferences were. For starters I chose chicken tikka with my partner going for the king prawn puri which was described as mediterranean large prawns fried with onions, tomatoes and selected herbs, moderately spiced and served on puri bread.

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY 2016

For our main courses I wanted to try a different dish, so off the specials I went for the Relish Chicken which is chicken prepared with a special blend of spice, cooked in a coriander relish with a touch of garlic & ginger. My partner chose the Garlic Chilli Chicken which is a hot dish cooked with garlic and green chilli in exotic spices. We also chose Pilau rice and a Peshwari Nan to accompany our meal. We ordered more drinks whilst our food was being prepared and we both mentioned how much we liked the new décor which is very modern, spacious and contemporary. There is also a very relaxed feel and the staff are very polite, helpful and professional. Our starters arrived and they looked and tasted scrumptious! We were both looking forward to our main dishes and when they came we were very impressed. Both dishes were beautifully presented and we couldn’t wait to tuck in! Everything was cooked to perfection and if we had to describe it in one word it would be ‘delicious!’

We ordered a desert each and this was this perfect ending to a great evening. Abdul then presented us with an extra desert, to celebrate the 4th birthday of Staffordshire Outlook. Blue Ginger is a fully licensed restaurant Opening hours: 5.30pm - Close Blue Ginger, Stafford Road, Huntington,Cannock, Staffordshire WS12 4NU. Telephone: 01534 500300

Once finished we both said that was quite possibly one of the best Indian meals we had been for.

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May MAY NAMED AFTER THE GREEK GODDESS OF FERTILITY MAIA May is the fifth month of the year in both the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and one of seven months which have 31 days. In any given year, May is the only month that can start and end on the same day of the week. May is a spring month in the Northern Hemisphere and Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. The month May was named after the Greek goddess of fertility Maia, mother of the god Hermes, in Latin, the name was Maius. There was a less romantic but more practical English name for the month; it was called Thrimilce because, in the long, spring days, cows could be milked three times between sunrise and sunset. Other quite interesting facts about May: • May’s birthstone is the emerald which is emblematic of love and success and the birth flower is the Lily of the Valley. • In 1644 maypoles were banned in England as a ‘heathenish vanity’. Local officials who defiantly put them up could be fined five shillings a week; equivalent to about £3,000 today. • According to an old Cornish superstition, it was unlucky to buy a new broom in May - and so was washing a blanket! • Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, and summer’s lease hath all too short a date.William Shakespeare (Sound Familiar?) • In response to the first of May being Labour Day, the first World Tramps Congress in Argentina in 1966 named the second of May as International Day of Idleness. • It was once believed that if you got up on the first of May and washed your face in the May dew, it would remove all freckles and pimples, giving you a great complexion. • In the United Kingdom May is celebrated as National Smile Month So, as you have missed the first of May, we at The Chase CACI Clinic are perfectly placed to give you a great complexion; utilising our services and products, to help celebrate National Smile Month.

The Ultimate machine provides treatments for the face and some body procedures. The Quantum Machine also works on the face and offers an additional range of body treatments. Our Radio Frequency Machine will stimulate the production of Collagen to plump out the wrinkle lines and help minimise their visibility. The top of the range Apilus Electrolysis Machine will help with the removal of unwanted hair, skin tags and Milia. The Facial Steamer will help hydrate the skin and open the pores, add all these treatments together and you will have a wonderful reason to smile! In addition to the finest equipment we have the latest and most efficacious products. The world renowned ‘Heaven by Deborah Mitchell’ has a wide range that all compliment the treatments provided at our Clinic. Cannock Soroptimists Entertained by Saucy Tales from Nell Gwynne SI Cannock & District Annual 61st Charter Dinner at Cannock Chase Golf Club was attended by over 90 members & their guests including Soroptimists from other clubs in the Midland Chase Region.

More information about SI Cannock and the Soroptimist International organisation is available at www.sigbi.org/ cannock-and-district and at www.facebook.com/SICannock

President Lynne Tuckley welcomed everyone and the Mistress of Ceremonies, President Elect Carole Holdcroft, introduced Maurice Partington, Past President of the Rotary Club of Cannock who gave the toast to Soroptimism. Regional President Alyson Green gave the response to SI Cannock. While the Past President of SI Bilston, Pat Cross gave thanks on behalf of the guests. After an excellent meal Lesley Smith, Curator of Tutbury Castle, provided the evening’s entertainment she gave a highly entertaining performance dressed as Nell Gwynne, the long time Mistress of King Charles II of England. She told many humorous & informative tales and everyone in the audience was enthralled by Lesley’s performance as she recreated the turbulent life & times of Nell who rose from being an orange seller in Drury Lane to the mother of a Duke of England. A truly remarkable life. Soroptimist Val Jones gave the vote of thanks to Lesley.

SI CANNOCK & DISTRICT One and eightpence in my pocket Cannock Soroptimists were joined by June Pickerill who gave us a fascinating talk with the intriguing title ‘one and eightpence in my pocket’. June told us the life story of her ancestor John Pickerill and the incredible good fortune she had in discovering some previously unknown letters. It was finding these letters which changed the entire direction of her life and started her on a twenty year quest to find out more. Over twenty years ago June was faced with clearing out the home of an elderly aunt. By sheer luck she found a rusty old tin and on opening it discovered it contained nine letters. These letters were written in the years 1853-1864 and told of John’s adventures as he left his Hednesford home and travelled to South Australia in search of a better life. He wanted to be his own master and was drawn to Australia by the offer of free passage and land for only two and sixpence an acre. With just one and eightpence in his pocket he left behind everything he had known including his pregnant wife, Sarah and even changed his name on arrival becoming known as John Pickering from then onwards. Although his story ended sadly, his family prospered in 54

the new country and he left behind his wife, 2 sons and a daughter who started a whole new branch of the Pickering/ Pickerill family. When a reunion was held in 2005 which June attended, the family had grown to the extent that over 200 Australian descendents of John and Sarah were able to attend and meet up with the English relatives who were completely unknown to them before June began her research. Sue Starr Hypnotherapy COMMITMENT FACILITATES LONG LASTING CHANGE RATHER THAN A TEMPORARY FIX “Throughout the last year, my client base has continued to increase. Clinical Hypnotherapy continues to develop credibility as a leading alternative therapy and features in many media stories mostly for the right reasons! Our point of difference is that we include more behavioural tools, such as CBT and NLP, alongside Hypnotherapy to support clients in achieving their personal goals”. Sue Starr Hypnotherapy has over the last 3 years established itself as a leading practice in South Staffordshire. Sue continues “Teenagers and young children (as young as 6) are an increasing part of my client base; they tend to be great fun to work with and engage really well with therapy. The diversity of issues faced can range from low confidence, anxieties, exam pressures and bullying. GP and school referrals for this continue to highlight a broader shortage in support for young people where quick response is essential” As well as the regular client base, last summer saw an increase in people wanting Hypnotherapy prior to weddings. Best Man speeches, Bride confidence and self-esteem concerns have so far been supported by Sue, “Weddings are supposed to be the best day of a couples lives, however, this pressure of being in the spotlight, organising so much and wanting it to be perfect can be overwhelming. We help with the mindset so that the big day can be fully enjoyed by confident, in control Brides,

Grooms and the Best Man!” The most important thing is that a client really wants a beneficial change for themselves and that they are committed to making a change. Expecting a magic wand result with no hard work or challenges is not the case with Hypnotherapy. “Many people nowadays want quick fixes with no effort; Hypnotherapy requires dedication from the client to bring about change. But combining Hypnotherapy and client commitment facilitates long lasting change rather than a temporary fix!” Sue Starr Dip Hyp, DNLP, GQHP, GHRreg is a fully qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist and is registered with the General Hypnotherapy Register, General Hypnotherapy Standards Council, and the NHS recognised Complimentary & Natural Healthcare Council. IMPORTANCE OF MICROCHIPPING YOUR PETS MICROCHIPPING DOGS & HORSES IS NOW LAW!

Microchipping dogs and horses is now a legal requirement, however due to the small size of the microchip, which is smaller than a grain of rice, a microchip can be implanted into any animal of any size. Each microchip contains a unique bar code, which is registered along with the pet and owner details onto a national database. This means that if your pet is found, taken to a rescue centre or veterinary practice and scanned using a special microchip scanner, they can be reunited with you in minutes.

telephone number or if ownership of the animal changes. If you take your pet on holiday you can set up a one off payment with the national database, which will allow you to add and change your contact details as often as you like. Meaning you can add holiday addresses and telephone numbers, boarding establishments details or veterinary practice details if you’re pet is ill.

Cats are not legally owned by anyone, therefore to stop disputes of who is the rightful carer it is advisable to get them microchipped at an early age, before they find other feeders or multiple homes. The microchip is implanted using a needle under the skin between the shoulder blades in dogs, cats & small mammals (such as rabbits, guinea pigs & ferrets). In horses it is implanted into the crest of the left side of the neck. In tortoises into the left hind limb. In birds into the breast muscle or under the skin at the back of the neck, depending on the size of the bird. Microchip implantation is a simple and quick procedure and can be performed in a 10 minute consultation with a veterinary surgeon or veterinary nurse. If you prefer they can be microchipped at the same time as being neutered under a general anaesthetic. Once your pet is microchipped it is vital that you update your contact details with the national database every time you move home, change 56

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY 2016

As of 6th April 2016 it is a legal requirement for all dogs, over the age of 8 weeks, to be microchipped and for your dogs registered microchip details to be up to date and correct at all times. If this is not adhered to then you face a fine of up to ÂŁ500. All veterinary practices will have an obligation to report any dogs not microchipped or to ensure that the owner adheres to the new legislation.

Competition Staffordshire County Show World famous motorcyclists as young as five years old will entertain the crowds in the main ring at this year’s Staffordshire County Show, organisers said today. The Imps motorcycle display team will be thrilling more than 70,000 people during the two day event on June 1st and 2nd. The family show to be held at Staffordshire County Showground on Weston Road in Stafford will see The Imps perform in the main ring twice each day.

The Imps, known for their smart red tunics and their spectacular show, will perform at 1pm and 4.30pm on June 1st and 1pm and 3.30pm on the second day of the show. The show has once again secured sponsorship from South Staffordshire College which has expanded its Animal Zone for this year’s event. Mr Williams added: “We of course want sunshine every year and two days of it would be rather brilliant but whatever the weather there’s still plenty to do and fun to be had. “If the sun is shining the outdoor picnic area is beautiful but the indoor one is perfect if it’s a little damp under foot. “The Woodfest area and country pursuits area is a hive of activity by people of all ages and of course the main ring offers non-stop entertainment. “Whilst areas such as the food hall and the cookery theatre hosted in conjunction with the Staffordshire Chef’s Forum is set to return and attract the crowds once again. “This is definitely a show not to be missed and a must for all families during the half term school holidays - we had many people return for the second day last year as they had enjoyed the first so much and had not got to see everything as there was so much to see and do.”

Advance tickets go on sale on April 1st from the showground office or through the website http://www.staffscountyshowground.co.uk/ staffordshire-county-show/ticket-information/ and from all other outlets from May 1st. Organisers advised people to buy their tickets in advance to avoid queues on the day following the record breaking crowds last year. For show updates follow them on Twitter @StaffsShow and Like their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/Staffordshiresountyshow 58

Game of Thrones

BY ROB TAYLOR

ON THE THRONE OF THE FIAT 500X

You join me on the throne. No, not the colloquial “throne”, which lurks in the smallest room in the house and provokes much tittering from youngsters and men-children alike, but sitting high and mighty on the spot now most coveted by motorists: at the wheel of a crossover vehicle. More than ever manufacturers are taking car-jacks to their most beloved hatchbacks, then giving them the unenviable task of driving around while wearing massive stiletto heels. Often the end result is a fashion statement with few redeeming features, but where does the Fiat 500X fit in? OK, you might think, so it’s yet another small front-two-wheel drive premium crossover that aims to cash in on the baby 500’s cutesy looks, but that’s just not the case. Admittedly, owing to the enormous success of the Fiat 500, the Italian brand has understandably fallen victim to the most irresistible force presently sweeping across the automotive galaxy: the crossover vehicle – or specifically in this case, the B-segment crossover vehicle – but the Fiat 500X is a genuinely effective tool for modern life. Even though in the strictest sense 60

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY 2016

I’ve always been a fan of high-driving positions – better visibility, command of the road – I’ve always been a firm believer that there’s little to no justifiable reason for riding high just for the sake of it, to play Lord of Manor when on the school run. Similarly I see no point in hunting for extra space in any other way than by buying an estate. The 500X copes very well with changes of direction and its suspension irons out all but the worst lumps and bumps, providing a ride which is very smooth. The 120bhp 1.6 Multi-jet diesel engine makes mincemeat of the 500X’s modest kerb-weight – 1320kg – as well as almost any load you can bring to bear upon its ample proportions. I travelled down to the south coast on the M5 with three friends and copious kit (a 350 litre boot greedily ate all of our luggage) and the 500X performed admirably, dispatching any given motorway malady with a big slug of its sizeable 236lb ft of torque. The 500X’s cabin is well insulated and there’s little trace of noise from the outside world when up at speed. Driver-aids like Lane-Assist and Emergency Braking seem to work well, even in poor weather and at night. And yet despite its motorway might it retains all of the wieldy dexterity required for in-town tootling too:

parking is a cinch thanks to a reversing camera, as well as the 500X’s partypiece: all-round good visibility from its high-chair, which offers much adjustment for maximum comfort. In fact the seats are some of the best out there, supportive but not overly firm. Keeping us entertained on said journey was myriad pieces of kit on this Lounge spec model. Stand out favourite has to be the TomTom-connected sat-nav, which kept us on the straight and narrow. Besides this the cabin is a nice place in which to spend time: there’s chunky well-made switchgear, flash plastics and pleasing ergonomics allied to robust storage solutions. And since my all-time favourite readout displayed an average mpg of 55.6 mpg (official numbers 68.9 mpg/ 109 g/km Co2) at the end of my time with the 500X I was more than happy. Knowing that this model costs just over £20,000 pleases me too. For me riding high in a car still means being taller, heavier and ill-equipped to handle the sinuous B-roads that make this country great and you just don’t want that in a hatchback. In short, sitting lower makes for a better driving experience, but I’ve always been open to a car-maker being able to swerve around the inherent drawbacks and produce a crossover that can do it all. This 500X may just be that car.

The Course of Progress

BY ROB TAYLOR

RISE OF TURBOCHARGED THREE CYLINDER UNITS

Rarely do us Brits ever appreciate that things are broadly getting better when it comes to cars – or anything else for that matter. We are more likely to be heard to moan, as our forefathers have done for millennia, that ‘things aren’t as good as they used to be.’ Think about it: there have been people of every generation who have bemoaned progress of every kind; reviling it at every possible opportunity; all of them eager to banish as much as they can conceivably fit into their very own Room 101. Luddites smashed up heavy machinery; today’s Neo-Luddites want to smash up the Internet. When it comes to cars, the unswerving drive from our government to minimise emissions has given us irritating start-stop systems and electric power steering. Most of us would pluck these overly complex gizmos out of our cars in a heartbeat, but one good thing to come out of all this cosying up to our EU overlords is the downsizing of engines – specifically the sensational rise of turbocharged three cylinder units, like the one in the latest Vauxhall Corsa. This has proven to be a real gamechanger in the super-mini class especially, because it eschews the big but not too

62

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY 2016

clever idea of making small cars scaled down carbon copies of larger models in the range, rather than playing to their strengths. Big deal, you might say; I’m old, suffer from deep vein thrombosis and gave up on what’s under the bonnet at the age of 30. Well you – and most other people – won’t care too much about the differences these changes make until you get behind the wheel. And the baby engine in this fourth generation Corsa is a prime example. Opt for Vauxhall’s new three-cylinder turbo 1.0T EcoFlex unit and you won’t be disappointed. “What?!” I hear you cry, “A mere 998cc to lug around a car that weighs over 1645 kg, you must be mad.” Well, it produces 90 bhp and 123 lb ft of torque and so you will rarely be caught wanting for more. OK, so, it’s no hot hatch – that’s the VXR – but this engine is lively enough; it will do 0-60 mph in 11.9 seconds; is pretty tractable from low revs and is able to cruise quietly, thanks to a balancer shaft designed to remove the signature three cylinder thrum. This car really does ride and handle as well as it looks: that is to say very nicely indeed. I can’t remember any previousgen Corsa looking this good. Motorways are no problem either as once up and running you can cruise without any concern that the car is underpowered.

Get it out on a twisty open road and you’ll soon discover that the gearbox is a pleasant and willing companion, always egging you to shift sharper and more precisely, while maximising every one of the 90 available horses. Put it into city confines and you’ll enjoy the ‘City’ steering button that takes every effort away. This Corsa provides an impressive official combined fuel economy number of 64.2 mpg too, although when you inevitably drive it as I did (as in: always keen to exploit the zesty engine’s fun-loving character), don’t expect to see such heady headline-grabbing figures. I averaged around 45.6 mpg. Emissions are more finite however and are listed at 104 g/km Co2. The Corsa’s interior space grabs your attention. Happily, the SRI model I have here is chock-full of all the best bits the range has to offer and is the sybaritic car of choice, with 16” black alloys, air conditioning, sports seats, a leather covered steering wheel, LED running lights, cruise control, and Bluetooth connectivity. And you get it all for £14,150, although I’d recommend lowerspec’d models, as the range starts at just £8,995. Buy one with this engine and I guarantee you won’t regret it. It’ll make you feel like a 17 year old again, in the best ways imaginable.

What is an ECU Remap

Remapping is the most common term used to describe the process of fine tuning modern engines, for optimal efficiency.

Why have a Remap

More and more ordinary drivers are becoming aware of, and benefiting from engine tuning aimed at engine efficiency and improvements in MPG.Drivers benefit from smoother acceleration, removal of flats pots, improved towing, safer over taking and valuable savings every time they fill up with fuel.

Savings!

Typically diesel drivers enjoy improved fuel efficiency of 10-20% At current pump prices this can represent a saving of £6 - £12 every time they fill up (60Ltr Tank) and of course when prices rise again, the savings would be even greater. Use a Professional for peace of mind If you care about the results you achieve and the safety of your vehicle, you should choose your engine tuner with the same care as you might choose a doctor! You wouldn’t let someone who bought a £40 doctors kit off of the internet carry out brain surgery would you? Use the same logic when you have your car tuned, choose a professional.
