INNOVATIVE DIGITAL BROADBAND MRI SCANNER OFFICIALLY OPENED BY WOLVERHAMPTON MAYOR The new £1.9 million Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Suite installed at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital, was officially opened by Wolverhampton City Mayor, Councillor Barry Findlay, with other VIP guests including the Mayoress and Wolves FC midfielder Lee Evans in attendance . The hospital in Tettenhall is the medical partner of Wolverhampton Wanderers and the club is pleased to have this facility “on their doorstep’’.
Pictured: 1.5T Digital Broadband MRI Scanner from Philips
Pictured: Wolverhampton City Mayor, Councillor Barry Findlay officially opens the new MRI scanner with the Mayoress, Phoebe Cartwrigh, Radiology Manager and Karen Pattison Hospital Director at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital.
The 1.5 teslar Ingenia MRI scanner from Philips offers consistent high quality images, improved comfort for patients and gives the hospital a full range of diagnostic equipment on site, available six days a week. It is the only true digital MRI system currently on the market, providing a high purity signal from miniaturised electronics in the coil. These features reduce anxiety for patients as the examination time is reduced and the patient perceived acoustic noise levels are reduced by up to 80%.
Phil Hayward, Head of the Medical Department at Wolverhampton Wanderers commented, “The Wolves medical department is delighted to have set up an arrangement with Nuffield Health Wolverhampton which allows us 6-day a week access to the MRI services at the hospital. The excellent level of service and high degree of professionalism that Nuffield Health offers has streamlined our diagnostics, allowing us access to high quality imaging literally on our doorstep. “ The hospital on Wood Road, Tettenhall, is one of 31 hospitals nationwide which forms part of the not for profit Nuffield Health group. The new MRI suite at the Wolverhampton Hospital Radiology Department forms part of Nuffield Health’s national investment programme, to better meet the needs of patients.
Easy access allows hospital staff to diagnose illness sooner and the digital broadband MR scanner to exactly pinpoint injuries. Karen Pattison, Hospital Director, comments, “High quality imaging is so very important for our doctors and consultants to make decisions on treatment. The scanner will be used help diagnose a number of conditions, from strokes, heart conditions, arthritis and prostate cancer through to sports injuries.” Phoebe Cartwright, Radiology Manager at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton said, “Having the MR scanner onsite is great news for our patients. Before the scanner was installed, patients accessed MRI scans through a mobile service, which was available on certain days of the week. Now that we have our MRI scanner installed permanently on site, it can be used six days a week, giving patients much more flexibility when booking appointments and offer more complex scans in a shorter timeframe.”

V FESTIVAL CLEAN-UP 2016 Soroptimist International of Cannock & District have been involved for the past few years with the collection of tents, chairs and other goods left behind at Weston Park following the annual V Festival. The collection is organised by the local District of Rotary International and takes place on the two days following the V Festival. This year, as in previous years, so much was left behind by those who attended the Festival which, if it can be collected, can be used by people at home and overseas. No matter how many volunteers go along they are never able to collect all of the items left behind. This year 7 Soroptimists from SI Cannock & District and one Soroptimist’s granddaughter went along to help with the grand ‘clear-up’ at Weston Park following another very successful, but slightly muddy, V Festival. Wearing wellies and other appropriate clothing, members set to work dismantling and re-packing tents, rolling up air beds, collecting chairs, buckets, bowls, sleeping bags and unopened tinned food– and anything else left behind by the revelers which was in good condition and might be of use to others. The tents were all taken to the International Aid trucks; they will be used in disaster areas around the world. All other items this group collected will be used by the Pathway Project, the local refuge for women victims of domestic 6

violence and by Staffordshire Women’s Aid – in fact, many of the items collected have already been put to good use by local women who are in need. The V Festival clear-up is a true example of voluntary organisations working together and giving service to help others. Everyone who went along thoroughly enjoyed the experience - even though they are always shocked at what others will leave behind -and they know that all of the goods will be put to excellent use by those who need them. More information about Soroptimist International is available on the website www.sigbi.org and about the Cannock Club on www.sigbi.org/cannock-and-district or on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SICannock

Radfield Home Care CELEBRATES A NEW HEAD OFFICE WITH MAYOR & MAYORESS
Lots of excitement and preparations were taking place at Radfield Home Care in Stafford, planning the official ‘Grand Opening’ of their new head office on Saturday 10th September.
a coffee without having to rush off and worry about parking limitations. The office space also provides the opportunity to expand our office team and care team as we continue to support our clients with the high standard of care and customer service they deserve.” Brother & Sister, Alex Green & Dr Hannah MacKechnie owners & directors of Radfield Home Care, also attended the afternoon with their families to celebrate the new head office and Stafford Branch. The new premises now named as Radfield House in Austin Friars, has become Head Office for Radfield Home Care who has a number of offices across Staffordshire, Shropshire, Cheshire & Worcestershire and the new building now has a dedicated training suite with specialist training equipment providing a fantastic environment for all the carers to gain their vital training experience and certifications.
The day was full of fun and entertainment for all ages, with a performance by a local belly dancing group, Balliamo, a bouncy castle, face painting and colouring competition for the children. The BBQ went down extremely well with visitors enjoying the hot dogs and burgers during the afternoon. There were also refreshments throughout the day with tea, coffee, soft drinks and cakes for anyone that became a little peckish. The Mayor & Mayoress of Stafford kindly accepted Radfield Home Care’s invitation to officially open the offices on Saturday and they certainly seemed to be enjoying the day, meeting lots of Radfield office staff and care team, along with many Radfield clients, who were all were very excited about meeting them. Radfield Home Care also had a special guest on the day to officially cut the ribbon, and that was Jim Brazier and his wife. Jim’s life was saved by Yvonne, a Radfield carer, earlier in the summer using her CPR training and he was thrilled to be asked to cut the official ribbon at the new offices. Becky Dodd, Registered Manager in Stafford comments, “Having Jim attend the day makes it even more special. Yvonne & Jim now have a very special relationship and we are so proud of Yvonne, our carer for reacting so critically to Jim’s condition, without Yvonne’s training, experience and assertiveness, we wouldn’t have Jim joining us on this special occasion. Moving into our new premises is the start of a fantastic adventure for all our staff including myself. There are so many benefits including the car park, which maybe sounds strange, but it now means our carers can come in and grab 10 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER 2016
Kevin Dodson, Radfield Home Care Trainer commented, “ The benefits of having a dedicated training suite means we can provide ongoing bespoke and dedicated training for all our carer’s in all aspects of their roll. We cover specific training to meet the demands of our clients; dementia awareness, manual handling, medication training as well as a wide range of other topics and specialism’s. The Radfield training programs involve a huge amount of face to face sessions allowing carers to openly discuss and share each other’s thoughts as well as iron out any concerns they may have.” The day raised in the region of £340 for a local convent in Stafford, St Mary’s, where Radfield look after clients and Alzheimer’s society.

County council set to press ahead with growth boosting road scheme Preparations for a road scheme which will pave the way for the future growth of Stafford with the county council’s cabinet set to approve powers to purchase land along the route. The Stafford Western Access Route will support the continued growth of the county town and enable thousands of new homes to be built, provide for new employment land to create thousands more jobs and relieve traffic congestion in the town centre. This will also improve access to increased rail services through Stafford and its connection to HS2. The county council cabinet is set to commit to the delivery of the scheme as soon as possible; with compulsory purchase powers (CPOs) meaning land can be bought without delay. The cabinet will also be asked to approve additional funding for the scheme, which will be borrowed and reclaimed through developer contributions, future business rates and additional council tax generated from new homes. It is estimated the project would support the generation of additional council tax over £2million a year. The county council contribution to the project would be £11.6million in total. Staffordshire County Council’s economic growth leader Mark Winnington said: “The Stafford Western Access Route is an essential part of Stafford’s ambitious growth plans. It will enable future development contained in the 12
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER 2016
borough’s local plan to happen – notably the delivery of thousands of new homes and business, office and retail space. The route will unlock millions of pounds worth of future investment in Stafford. Future economic growth ensures people can access better paid jobs leading to more prosperous communities. These will also be places where there are more opportunities and people enjoy healthier more independent lives. “In addition the way councils are funding is changing. The introduction of 100 per cent business rate retention will lead to council becoming self-funding and major projects like this will support essential services. “The new road will improve traffic flow around the town, helping to reduce congestion which restricts business and in addition improve access to improved rail services. Any project of this size is liable to change over time as detailed plans are drawn up, negotiations with landowners progress and timescales shift and so we have seen the project cost go up. We are committed to its delivery and will front the funding gap in order for the road to be built as quickly as possible. This project is vital to Stafford and will bring significant long-term economic benefits to the borough.”

Mikey has put together a huge program that kids will love and I want to thank him for his hard work. Volunteers are essential to our libraries and this shows how they can really make a difference.”
What could be as powerful as the Force? The power of reading, of course. And the two will come together this October at Penkridge Library.

Library volunteer Mikey Roberts, aged 15, is planning a whole day of free Star Wars Reads activities, including: -Star Wars Treasure Hunt around the library -Wordsearches and mazE -Colouring in sheets -Lots of Star Wars books to borrow -Star Wars X-Wing Games all morning with Reading Hack -Volunteer Jake (Ages 12) -Star Wars costume competition – dress up as your favourite character with a chance to win a prize for best costume Gill Heath, cabinet member responsible for libraries at Staffordshire County Council, said: “This is a really exciting event that will light up reading for kids and remind them of how much fun it can be. Star Wars is more popular than ever and I’m sure even the most reluctant reader will turn from the dark side and find a love for books on the Day.

Appitized Business Staffordshire is the franchise partner of multi-award-winning UK app development company Appitized, delivering iOS and Android apps to small businesses at a fixed low monthly cost. Having built hundreds of business apps for small businesses we understand the type of features and functionality that customers expect your business app to have!
With features and functions such as booking forms, product information, Geotargeting, paperless expenses, messengers, surveys, feedback, news feeds and customer focused loyalty schemes to name just a few. Most importantly, if a customer visits your website you are unable to contact them directly, with an app you can engage 24/7. Finally, our customizable mobile apps allow you to STAND OUT from the crowd. The mobile app market is growing rapidly, so why not jump ahead of the competition in your local area?
Managing your app Why an App? It is important for businesses to appreciate that an effective mobile strategy involves more than just a mobile-friendly website. According to a study by Ofcom last year, Britons are spending over two hours a day on their mobile device. Therefore, once it is downloaded your brand is placed on consumers’ devices and users are being constantly reminded that your brand still exists. Having your own app for your business will help to: - Drive recurring business constantly through push notifications (offers, sales, news) - Improve brand awareness as more people can find you. - Build relationships with customers and understand their needs. - Gain more credibility because people will expect companies to have an app.
Other benefits One of the most important benefits of a mobile app is the use of Push Notifications, this enables you to constantly remind users about your products, services and offers, thereby increasing potential sales and profits. People are spending hours each day on their phones so if you’re not engaging on mobile you could be missing out on a huge chunk of business Another benefit is the increased customer loyalty it can generate. It delivers the brand directly at the customer’s fingertips and with our electronic loyalty feature you can design campaigns to encourage repeat business. If your business already has a loyalty scheme, why not transfer this to a digital version? A mobile app creates your own direct marketing channel. 16
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER 2016
Mobile technology can sound daunting however there’s no need to worry. Your app will be designed and built by our bespoke award-winning app development team, and you can update your app from anywhere with an internet connection using the cloud-based content management system. This means you can change opening hours, announce special offers, add new services, share news, and much more, wherever and whenever you need to. Therefore leaving you more time to concentrate on running your business, and delivering your products or services.
Creating your app We do it all for you, from the design and functionality of your app, through to app store submission and approval. Appitized Business Staffordshire will take care of everything. Our apps are designed and developed to work on iOS and Android devices, and are available to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Pricing It is a common misconception that acquiring your own app for your business is going to cost a fortune, with significant upfront costs. This is not the case at Appitized Business Staffordshire, our business app solution has 20 (and counting) ready to go rich features and can be available to your business from just

AFR Security PROTECT YOUR HOME You’re less likely to become a victim of burglary if you have a well-fitted and maintained burglar alarm system. The best type of alarm for your home depends on your personal preferences, your budget, where you live, what your home is like and what level of protection you need. A key consideration is what you would prefer to happen when your alarm goes off. Bells-only alarms make a noise, but don’t contact anyone (such as the police or the homeowner). A speech dialler system meanwhile, automatically contacts you or other nominated friends and family when the alarm is triggered. Alternatively, you could get a monitoring contract, whereby you would pay a company monthly or annually to take action or call the police if the alarm goes off. Costs vary between the different alarm types; you can call AFR Security on burglar alarm costs to find out more about pricing and getting the best deal. Contact Neil at AFR Security now for a free no obligation quote on 01543 277909 or 07971 172212.

The Late Show FOLIAGE PLANT TO SET OFF BRIGHTER FLOWERED PLANTS Autumn in the perennial garden is a time when colour slowly ebbs away into browns and russets of fading leaves. But there are still some easy to grow perennials that are continuing to flower and are ideal for injecting some zing into October, November and possibly beyond.
The willow-leaved sunflower (Helianthus salicifolia) is also coming into bloom at this time. Again we tend to grow this as a foliage plant in the summer as the tall stems clothed with willowy leaves are an excellent foil for flowering plants.
One of my favourites is the Kaffir Lily, which you might find labelled as either schizostylis or hesperantha. These remind me of mini gladioli with their sword-shaped leaves and 1ft (30cm) flower stems. The flowers are large and attractive and last from late September through November. You can even pot up a few of the plants to Ageratina Chocolate flower indoors into December.
Red-hot pokers flower at different times of the year depending on variety. The latest in my garden is a South African species – the straight-leaved poker (Kniphofia linearifolia) with orange or yellow flowers. This comes into bloom right at the end of October – I’ve even seen him capped with snow!
They are what we call “hungry feeders” meaning they quickly take the goodness from the soil, so do mulch in spring and give them a good strong feed of a balanced fertiliser to keep them flowering well. There are lots of varieties in red, pink and white. My favourites are the large red “Major” and the palest pink “Pink Princess”
Michaelmas Daisies (Asters) are well loved late bloomers typically coming into their own by late Schizostylis Major September. My favourites are the tall, dark-stemmed types like “Calliope”, “Glow in the Dark” and “Vasterival” that start to flower in late October and become a magnet for butterflies. There is one in my garden that holds fire until November and that is the tall, lavender blue “Novemberlaan” – a very welcome sight. Kniphofia linearifolia
Flowering in shade in October and November is a giant among Saxifrages: “Wada” with her large heads of white flowers. She needs a soil that doesn’t get too dry and shade overhead to protect her glossy attractive leaves. As I said she is larger than the average Saxifrage: - 1ft (30cm) across and tall in flower.
Late autumn may be the time to slow down in the garden but there’s still plenty of colour to be had if you choose the right plants.
Ageratina “Chocolate” is an unusual type of hemp with bronze or brown leaves through the summer topped by white flowers at the end of October. The flowers are a bonus really as we normally grow him as a foliage plant to set off brighter flowered plants. He looks particularly impressive as a backdrop for white Phlox.

Speaking of “chocolate” plants, coming into bloom for October is the perennial sunflower, Helianthus “Bitter Chocolate” with chocolatescented flowers on his tall 6ft (180cm) stems. This is one for a sunny spot and planted close enough to the front of the border to allow you to sniff the flowers for a chocoholics-hit each time you pass!

Second “Festival of Peace” for Stafford “TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WISH TO BE TREATED” To mark National Inter Faith Week 2016, Stafford and District Friends of Faith are holding a “Festival of Peace” on Monday November 14th 6.30pm at the Oddfellows Hall, Greengate Street, in the centre of Stafford. This follows on from last year’s successful Festival of Peace - the first of its kind in Stafford. Inter Faith Week is an annual event which this year falls between 13th and 20th November. It provides an opportunity to celebrate the fact that, as murdered MP Jo Cox poignantly had said in her maiden speech in Parliament: “We have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.” This year, the focus of the Festival will be on the shared values expressed in various versions of the “Golden Rule”: treat others as you wish to be treated - a philosophy found in most religious teachings and in non-religious approaches to life. Representatives of Stafford’s Baha’i, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Quaker, Sikh and Spiritualist communities will share the teachings of their own faith on this subject and talk about how their community puts this into practice locally. There will also be an opportunity to hear about the work of local and national groups committed to supporting those in need in a wider context.
Refreshments will be served from 6.30pm; proceedings will begin officially at 7.15pm. The event will be attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Stafford. All are welcome free of charge, but for catering purposes places can be reserved by contacting the Secretary of Stafford and District Friends of Faith, on secretary.sdff@btinternet. com .Friends of Faith Chair, Rev. Prebendary Michael Metcalf commented that: “The Stafford Festival of Peace will be a major public event. It provides one of the very few occasions when people from a whole range of faiths, communities and beliefs in Stafford can meet together in an open and constructive context, to learn about and from each other and to share in a joint celebration of our desire for peace and wellbeing for everyone.“ For further information visit: www.facebook.com/StaffordInterfaith/ Contact: secretary.sdff@btinternet.com Stafford’s Festival of Peace is also included in the national diary of events for Inter Faith Week, available on: www.interfaithweek.org/
Cycleway improvements for popular Stafford route CYCLISTS BENEFIT FROM IMPROVEMENTS Cyclists and walkers in Stafford who use the cycleway between Castletown and Haughton will soon benefit from improvements being made to the path. The project will include resurfacing of the cycleway, which is part of the NCN 55 (National Cycleway Network), improving access for all users and providing better drainage. Vegetation, trees and hedges along the outer edges of the entire path will also be cut back, tidied up or removed. The renovation project on the 5km stretch starts in September and is expected to take around five months to complete. Mark Winnington, Cabinet Member for the Economic Growth at Staffordshire County Council, said: “This is an important piece of improvement work for one of our many popular cycling routes. As it stands, low-hanging branches and vegetation have narrowed the path, while so much traffic and weather over the years has worn the path away. 34
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | OCTOBER 2016
“These improvements mean the route will look its best for years to come, allowing many more people to use it while helping to attract more visitors to the area and boost our tourism economy.” The work will be carried out in three separate sections, the first section being between Castletown to the overbridge at the sewerage works near Church Lane, Derrington. This will be followed by a short section up to Crossings Cottage at Crossing Lane Derrington and finally to the overbridge at Station Road, Haughton. For safety reasons, sections of the existing route will be temporarily closed to the public while the work is carried out. Wherever possible, suitable diversion routes will be signposted. The NCN 55 route runs along a disused railway line between Stafford and Newport and includes a 14 mile stretch of modern cycleway for people to enjoy. Staffordshire has good access to the National Cycling Network (NCN) which connects with many local routes across the County. Local cycling maps for all districts are available from local libraries and you can find out more at www.staffordshire.gov.uk

Compton Hospice Family ScareFeSt Forget the fairy tales that you know the ones where lips are red and skin is white as snow.
Forget the slippers made of glass and brave lovers kisses that cause curses soon to pass. Now upon us is the witching hour, where happy endings are snatched away by an evil power. On October 29th 3-9pm The Cedars, Compton Hospice in Wolverhampton, open their doors once again for their annual Family Scarefest fundraising event, which this year will change everything you think you know about your favorite bedtime stories with its Twisted Fairytales theme.
Bring your Werecubs (under 10’s) to trick or treat in the safety of the Wonderland Forest on the Cedars grounds between 3 and 6pm, then let them turn their paws to some of the games and creepy crafts on offer. Our resident storyteller will be on hand with some Grimm (pardon the pun) and gruesome tales to give you the chills and your little terrors can get up close and personal with some suitably scary critters in our mini petting zoo. For those who want to unleash some Thriller moves this All Hallows Eve, there will also be a spooky Halloween disco, complete with party games running throughout the evening. Don’t forget to dust off your most terrifying costumes too, for what Halloween event would be complete without a fancy dress competition. From 7pm the Wonderland Forest undergoes a terrifying transformation where pumpkins rot, magical roses wilt and evil lurks in every shadow. (Not suitable for under 10s) This is a free event, however some charges will apply.

October YELLOW MONTH October was originally the eighth month of the Roman calendar (from the Latin oct meaning “eight”). It always had a length of 31 days and became the tenth month of the year when King Numa Pompilius reformed the calendar and added the months of January and February around 700 BCE. October’s birthstones are the tourmaline and opal, its birth flower is the calendula. The zodiac signs for this month are Libra (until October 21) and Scorpio (from October 22) October is called “yellow month” by some Slavic countries, from the fading of the leaf, to the AngloSaxons it was known as Winterfylleth, because at this full moon (fylleth) winter was supposed to beg and to the Germanics it was Wein-mond (Wine month). The Welsh for October is Hydref (originally Hyddfref), a word signifying the lowing of cattle. Some Quite Interesting facts about October: • October in the UK is the Awareness Month for Lupus, breast cancer, national cyber security and domestic violence. • October is not mentioned in any Shakespeare play or sonnet. • In 1066 The Norman Conquest began with the Battle of Hastings. • In 1805 The Battle of Trafalgar took place. • In 1899 The Boer War began in South Africa between the British and the Boers. • In 1908 Henry Ford’s Model T went on sale for the first time. • In 1917 The ‘October Revolution’ in Russia took place in November but, at the time, Russians had not yet changed from the Julian calendar. • In 1978 Cardinal Karol Wojtyla of Poland was elected Pope. He was the first non-Italian Pope chosen in 456 years and took the name John Paul II. • In 1990 For the first time since the Ice Age, Great Britain was connected with the European continent, via a new rail tunnel under the English Channel. As an example, a recent report in the Daily Express demonstrated how for one client, hypnotherapy helped for their sugar addiction. The report quotes the NHS as advising “Hypnosis is widely promoted as a treatment for various long-term conditions and for breaking certain habits”and continues “hypnosis does seem to have an effect, though scientists disagree about how it works”.

Gavin congratulates The King’s Repose on Tiffin Cup Final Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, has welcomed the news that The King’s Repose restaurant made it to the Grand Final of this year’s Tiffin Cup. Earlier this year Gavin nominated The King’s Repose in Featherstone, to participate in the annual Tiffin Cup, a competition which celebrates culinary diversity and is held each year to find the best South Asian restaurant in the country. The restaurant is one of the eleven national finalists in this competition.
The King’s Repose remained best in the West Midlands after qualifying for the grand final having a visit from a secret guest. Quote from Gavin: “I was absolutely delighted that The King’s Repose was named the best South Asian restaurant in the West Midlands in the Tiffin Cup final 2016. It is a fantastic restaurant located in Featherstone which I wholeheartedly recommend to all in South Staffordshire. Many congratulations to Saffron who won the overall title.”
The Grand Final of the Tiffin Cup 2016 was held at Bellamy’s Restaurant in the House of Commons on Tuesday 12th July 2016 at 6:00pm. The Tiffin Cup winner was chosen from a list of restaurants that have been nominated by local MPs

Competition ‘Murder Mystery’ Leaves Customers Wanting More... Win a pair of tickets for this event After putting on their first ever ‘Murder Mystery’ event in June, Canalside Farm near Stafford had such an overwhelming response from customers, that they have decided to host the evening again on the 28th of October. The farm, which has only recently started hosting evening events, were having to turn people away, and had a waiting list of customers dying to see the show. Owner, Chris Barton said: “We were both shocked and delighted by the response to our first ever ‘Murder Mystery’ event, especially as it was only the second evening event that we had ever done. When we opened the Café back in July 2014, we had envisaged that most of our ‘foot fall’ would come from people visiting us during the day. But many of our regular customers had been asking if we would do evening events and this seemed like a great idea to get everyone involved. The Café is set in such a beautiful location, that it really does lend itself to evening events, especially with the decking area, as people love sitting next to the canal and watching the boats go by.” The talented Stafford Players, who usually perform in the Malcolm Edwards Theatre (the MET), at The Gatehouse in Stafford will be presenting the event once again, while guests enjoy a delicious two course supper. Whilst trying to figure out ‘who done it’, you will be served a scrumptious main course and dessert, made with locally sourced produce, including fresh fruit and vegetables straight from the Farm and meat from their butchery counter. So if you class yourself as an eagle eyed sleuth and have all the skills to be the next Sherlock Holmes, then this could be the event for you. If you would like to attend the Murder Mystery event, tickets cost just £15 per person, which includes a 2 course supper. Tickets must be pre-booked in advance. Canalside Farm, Shop and Café are open every day from 9am and are located in Great Haywood, just 6 miles outside Stafford. They are situated just off the A51, between Stone and Rugeley or can be accessed via the A518 from Stafford, turning right to Great Haywood (postcode ST18 0RQ). COLLECTING CRUTCHES FOR CHARITY In mid-August, Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital donated over 150 pairs of crutches and walking sticks to the UK based charity Legs4Africa. By recycling unwanted prosthetic legs and mobility equipment, the charity vastly helps the lives of African amputees. Established over three years ago, in the first two year Legs4Africa reclaimed over 3000 prosthetic legs and shipped them to the Gambia and Zambia. This work enables some people in Africa to return to work and regain their independence. In the coming years, the charity will ship to more African countries and send even more kit. In addition to reducing UK waste, the charity helps to push back the stigma where outdated perceptions of disability, including isolation and exclusion can evoke in some communities. Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital Physiotherapy Manager Jaspal Mander was delighted to find out about reusing the crutches and sticks in sub-Saharan Africa, saying, “Every year we have hundreds of crutches and sticks that we are no longer able to re-issue. I contacted Phil Tunstall from the charity Legs4Africa and he came by in a van and collected the redundant equipment and will export it to where it is needed most. I would encourage other hospitals, whether in the private sector or the NHS, to get involved. It’s a great feeling! At the time of the 2016 Paralympics, it is
a great opportunity to celebrate success and support those with disabilities”. The charity’s Phil Tunstall said, “It is a very worthwhile cause. Without crutches, sticks and prosthetic legs, many hundreds of people in Africa have very limited mobility and quality of life. Find out more about what we do at: www.legs4africa. or or like our Facebook page: facebook.com/ legs4africa It is fantastic to be involved in changing things for the better.” Pictured: Collecting crutches from Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital with Physiotherapy Manager Jaspal Mander and Legs4Africa’s Phil Tunstall.
Rotary Donates £3000 to Brain Tumour Charity and local Hospices On Wednesday 14th September the Rotary Club of Cannock handed over £3,000 from money raised at their annual golf day held in July. The donations were presented to three outstanding local charities. Club president Harold Bould told the meeting that funds from the golf day had also enabled earlier donations to Rotaries own charity Rotary Foundation and the End Polio Now campaign.
John congratulated the club on its fund raising and said he was impressed by the clubs plans for the rest of the year which includes a large number of interesting social and fund raising events. The evening concluded with John Sayer making a presentation to Club President Harold Bould who was this year’s winner of the clubs crown green bowling competition.
The clubs chosen charities who each received a cheque for £1,000 were: The Brain Tumour Charity, St Giles Hospice and Katharine House Hospice. The club was also delighted to welcome Rotaries District Governor John Sayer who gave an interesting talk to the club members and guests about the future of Rotary and ‘The End Polio Now’ campaign which is now in its 31st year. John outlined that before Rotary started the’ End Polio Now’ campaign some 1,000 cases per day of Polio were reported worldwide however, this year only 23 cases in total across the world have been recorded. He stated that a vaccination programme was ongoing in areas of the world were these 23 cases have been reported in a hope to eliminate the disease completely from the world’s population.

Mighty Mazda
BY ROB TAYLOR
REALISE WHAT YOU’RE MISSING
For too long the Mazda 2 has lived in the shadow of the Ford Fiesta. Now in its third generation, Mazda’s supermini stalwart has not so much made a quantum leap forward but has instead showed itself to be a steady student of evolution. This is the first car to come after the end of Mazda’s long-standing tie-up with Ford, which saw previous 2s’ sharing the Ford Fiesta’s platform.
realise just what is missing from so many of the other also-ran contenders: the joy of an agile chassis, which is fond of direction changes and resistant to body roll; the satisfaction of a wellweighted gearshift; the immediacy of a pokey petrol powerplant in the truest sense, without forced induction cheating the driving experience. The steering is sharp too. In fact, any young person who makes their first foray into driving in this car may well soon end up craving an MX5. Japan, I thank you.
Already a great car in its outgoing guise, this all-new 2, fresh with a handsome new nose job – part of the ‘Kodo’ styling ethos – from Mazda’s design department, is brimming with a character that is defiantly Japanese.
So, looks and driving characteristics mean that the latest Mazda 2 is already well ahead, but what about serious stuff that actually makes people choose their next car? Inside you’ll find no shortcomings. It may lack the badge-snobbery attached to so-called premium alternatives, but there’s more than enough ergonomic polish for anyone wanting to spend just a whisker over £14,000.
It may well be armed with a range of frugal and clever ‘SKYACTIV’ engines, but they are not turbocharged – despite coming at a time when seemingly every other manufacturer is obsessed with turbocharging – nor are they (again unfashionably) of miniscule capacity either: this vehicle is a 1.5 litre 90 bhp petrol engine. Similarly the 2 is a relative lightweight in what is today an increasingly lardy class of car, weighing just 1,050 kg. Furthermore this car makes you 62
The 2’s new 7” touchscreen media system, available on all but the lowest spec cars, is intuitive to use. The mid-range SE-L variant I have here gets you 15” alloy wheels, DAB, Bluetooth and cruise control. Sat nav is a must-have £400 option, as is a head-up display system – take that Mini and Audi! – that

features blind spot monitoring and high beam assist and comes as part of a £400 safety pack. There’s also excellent smartphone connectivity and safety kit including an auto brake function and a lane departure warning system. The Mazda’s spacious, welldesigned interior, which makes savvy use of an 80mm increase in wheelbase, has comfy seats in front and back and the car’s claimed 62.8mpg is impressive, given the lack of forced induction. I averaged 47.9mpg in the real world. And the Mazda is more than capable on a trip to Asda. It provides good visibility, light steering at low speed, has a usefully wide tailgate and there’s 280-litres of bootspace with the rear seats in place, or 950-litres with them folded down. So if you want to get into a car that is determinedly a leader, not a follower; a car that is bursting with brio and buoyed up by sensible philosophies, not bound by trends, then I strongly recommend that you get into the new Mazda 2.
Star Tech
BY ROB TAYLOR
MAGIC IS THE WORD
As I return from my local cinema, lost in awe and wonder at how the latest entry into the Star Trek canon compares to its illustrious forebears, I can’t help but draw comparisons to the car which I am driving home in: the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Or perhaps I should rephrase: the car that is near-enough capable of driving me home and is itself tantamount to the Starship Enterprise: a living, breathing sci-fi scion of the Benz Family, now in its tenth generation. The E-Class boasts, among myriad other features, Drive Pilot; which uses a camera and radar sensors to autonomously control acceleration, braking and even stopping without any input from the driver. There’s also Evasive Steering Assist, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, Remote Parking and Active Lane-change Assistant, which allows the driver to change lane as if by magic. Magic is the word; counterintuitive and scary are two others. The new E-Class also extends Merc’s ‘car-to-X communication’ smartphone and Cloud-based infrastructure, relaying info and warnings from further up the road, so it can predict the future too. Now we’re going seriously sci-fi. In fact, the amount of tech in this car beggars belief; I really do feel as though it ought to be writing its own review – and I’m confident that
it could empirically demonstrate that it is superior to just about everything else on the road, save for an S-Class I suppose, but where’s the fun in that? After all it is man who must still – legally – master machine at all times. Prices start at £35,935 for the E 220 d SE, which comes with an all-new four-cylinder 2.0-litre 195 bhp diesel engine that is capable of returning up to 72.4 mpg and 102 g/km of CO2. A 9-speed G-Tronic automatic gearbox is standard and on SE spec there’s most prominently: Garmin Map Pilot navigation system with 8.4-inch display; Parktronic parking sensors with reversing camera and a Park Pilot self-parking system; an autonomous emergency braking system; two-zone automatic climate control; leather upholstery with heated front seats; LED headlights and tail-lights; electric folding mirrors and 17-inch wheels. There’s also an AMG trim variant available if you prefer bigger wheels and a harder ride.
In the main though, I’m just too busy soaking up the cool and contemporary cabin to think of such fripperies. With soft-touch plastics, robust switchgear, cutting-edge tech, ambient mood lighting and leather upholstery, Mercedes has unsurprisingly nailed its bread and butter aspirations. The exterior profile is striking and quite handsome also, with its ‘coupe-esque’ lines. The E-Class seems to celebrate the fact that while you can push this lardy leviathan to make it ‘handle’ in a preposterously incongruous eulogy to Top Gear, it would really rather prefer it if you didn’t and did instead just get on with enjoying the ride. I know that’s what I’ll be doing; onwards and into the future.
However, having said that, I’d be amazed if even then this car wouldn’t rank in the Top Ten Comfiest Cars on the market right now. Even when you are going after its promised 0-62 mph time of just 7.3 seconds the E-Class is nothing short of luxurious. And as ever with all premium brands there’s a litany of luxury available in the options list too called – unimaginatively – Premium (£2,795) and Premium Plus (£3,895). I’d recommend the Air Body Control suspension system.
