PROVINCIAL GRAND SCRIBE EZRA - ANNUAL REPORT - November 2022

Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, Excellent Companions, and Companions, I have much pleasure in submitting, for your consideration and approval, my Annual Report on the activities of the Holy Royal Arch in the Province of Devonshire. On emerging from lockdown late last year, Chapters within the Province experienced a slow return to meetings with some not returning until the New Year. A series of informal meetings with Chapters was held around the Province to determine what problems if any, Chapters may have been experiencing on the resumption of convocations. This led to an informed opinion as to the health of our Chapters and determine how the Province could help. The overwhelming concern was a lack of numbers at convocations and what could be done to boost membership. After consultation between The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent and the Provincial Grand Master, RWBro Ian Kingsbury, a jointly signed letter was sent to all Lodges which was to be given to all Master Masons on completing their Third Degree. This letter explained the significance and importance of joining the Royal Arch when they felt ready to continue their Masonic Journey. The number of Craft Masons who are also Royal Arch Masons stands at 34% and The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent would like to see this number grow. In February a new Provincial Strategy was introduced setting out best practice for Chapters with the aim of helping to attract new members and retain current members, along with our vision, objectives, and our approach to encouraging membership of the Royal Arch. This document can be found on the Provincial Grand Chapter of Devonshire website:

https://devonshirehra.org.uk There you will also find notices, reports, and news from within the RA in Devonshire. The Provincial Education Officer E. Comp Alan Salsbury and his team continue to perform the playlet ‘In Camera’ at the convocations of our Chapters, helping companions develop a greater understanding of the Royal Arch, its symbolism and meaning. He has also been busy along with his team, in visiting Craft Lodges and performing the playlet ‘Talking Heads’. The demonstrations have been well received and, it is hoped, will give food for thought to Brethren who are not members of our wonderful Order. 13

PROVINCIAL GRAND SCRIBE EZRA - ANNUAL REPORT - November 2022 con’t In April, a contingent of Devonshire Companions attended Supreme Grand Chapter Annual Investiture to support Companions of our Province receiving preferment. Our congratulations go to E. Comp Peter M. A. Bartlett, E. Comp, Peter J. Balsom, E. Comp Roger B. Smith and E. Comp John Thornton on receiving a First Appointment to Past Grand Standard Bearer and to E. Comp Gerald W. Watson on being promoted to Past Grand Sword Bearer and E. Comp Kevin G. S. Hurley to Past Assistant Grand Sojourner respectively. We thank all those who travelled to London to support them and our Most Excellent Grand Superintendent at the Investiture and the subsequent lunch. We hope they enjoyed the day as much as all who attended in support seemed to.

This year the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent has been able to present Centenary Warrants to a number of Chapters whose Centenary celebrations had been put on hold due to the Pandemic. Along with the Provincial Executive and a good number of Active Officers the province has attended in support each and every one and enjoyed some memorable occasions. Congratulations must go to the following Chapters on reaching this notable milestone, True Love & Unity Chapter No 248, Perseverance Chapter No 164, St Swithun Chapter No 3483, and Trinity Chapter No 2595. It is with great sadness, I have to report that, in the year to date, we have lost some 36 of our Companions to the Grand Chapter above. They have all been valued members of their respective Chapters and of this Province. Our thoughts and prayers go to their bereaved relatives and to the companions of their Chapters It is also with some sadness that I have to report that two of our Chapters no longer find themselves viable and have handed their warrants back to Supreme Grand Chapter and have or are petitioning SGC to be erased from their lists. The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, Deputy Grand Superintendent and his 2nd and 3rd Principals have, between them, been present at nearly all Installation Convocations held within the Province not quite achieving 100% attendance due to the number of Chapters changing their Installation dates, however I am sure that during the forthcoming year they will be back on a 100% attendance rate. At every meeting they and the Chapter have been very well supported by the Grand and Active Officers. On behalf of the Province, I would like to thank the Grand and Active Officers for their outstanding commitment and support throughout the year. They have forged new friendships and have been great ambassadors for their respective Chapters. The companionship we have shared with them has been very rewarding. I have many to thank for their help and advice throughout the year. The ‘Grand Sanhedrin’ for their continued and unwavering support; and the Provincial Grand Treasurer, E. Comp Conrad Donaldson, who offers good advice when sought. To my many ‘unseen’ helpers at the Annual Convocation and other occasions. I must give thanks to the Scribe Ezra of each of the Chapters in our Province; they continue to be of great support and help to me with the administration of the Province. Finally, I must give grateful thanks to my Assistant Grand Scribe Ezra and predecessor, E. Comp Tony Parker, for his help, advice, and guidance throughout the year without which I would probably have fallen at the first hurdle. It only remains for me to welcome my new assistant, E. Comp Simon Glanfield of Newton Chapter No 6129. I look forward to working closely with him and pass on the same advice that Tony gave to me, keep the pencils sharpened, you will need them. I look forward to the coming year with enthusiasm and wish you all good health to enjoy your Royal Arch Freemasonry to the full.

Most Excellent Grand Superintendents Annual Address 12th November 2022

Companions, firstly I would like to sincerely welcome and thank all our guests who have travelled from afar but equally to thank all my fellow Companions who have come to support our Province but most importantly, to congratulate and support those of you who have been honoured with appointments and promotions today. Well done Companions, I hope your success and individual efforts will inspire others to follow in your footsteps. In welcoming you all, this would seem an appropriate moment to say how wonderful it is to be back here at the Riviera Conference centre after the hiatus caused by the Pandemic and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Vicky and Laura and their Team here at the conference centre for the co-operation and effort they have put in to accommodating us today. This is a special occasion for many reasons, it enables us all to meet as friends and Companions in a convivial manner; it gives our Province the opportunity to invite distinguished guests from other Provinces and important orders within this Province; all of whom I introduced to you earlier, but it also allows us a great platform to Appoint, Promote and Invest our Provincial Officers for the coming year, something which I personally regard as being of the utmost importance. I am a great believer that such appointments and promotions are a recognition of the effort put in by the individuals receiving them but also will inspire them to continue and encourage those coming along in the years ahead. Companions, please keep up your efforts; it is important that we, not only, attract new members to this special order which, as we know, completes our journey in Pure and Ancient Freemasonry but also retain our existing members. Companions, on the subject of new members, you are, I am sure, aware that we have a new Pro Grand Master and First Grand Principal, Jonathan Spence, who was installed on the 14th of October. He has expressed the opinion that, and I quote, ‘The Craft and the Royal Arch need to work seamlessly together We must get better at explaining why the Royal Arch enriches the Craft experience and how it is the natural next stage after becoming a Master Mason.’

In future, Important information from London will be headed as coming from both degrees. The need for us ALL to seek out new members is paramount to enable us to flourish. We must talk with great pride about our place in modern society today. and promote our core values. They are of course, INTEGRITY – RESPECT – CHARITY – FRIENDSHIP It is enlightening when you think for a few moments just how four simple words can speak volumes! Our new Pro Grand Master believes this should be the way in which we approach and discuss the subject of Freemasonry with those who have yet to experience and understand our values. Again in his words:“Integrity Respect Charity and Friendship is the way forward. These are our core values and should be used when talking to prospective members. We must cement our reputation as a force for good in our communities and society at large and as a thriving organisation that people aspire to” In London last April at Supreme Grand Chapter this Province was blessed with four new Grand Officer appointments. Peter Balsom, Peter Bartlett, Roger Smith and John Thornton. 21

Most Excellent Grand Superintendents Annual Address 12th November 2022 con’t We were granted two Promotions, Kevin Hurley to Past Assistant Grand Sojourner, and Gerald Watson our Deputy Grand Superintendent, to Past Grand Sword Bearer. Congratulations from us all Companions. Whilst on the subject of Provincial Officers this would be an appropriate moment for me to thank all those Active officers for this last year who have come out in goodly numbers to support myself and my fellow Principals at all of our Chapters throughout this Province. Companions your efforts are really appreciated, not just by myself and fellow Principals but by all those Chapters that we have visited and supported. Thereby demonstrating, if indeed that was needed, the meaning and spirit of Royal Arch Companionship. I am however equally confident that those active officers appointed today will be full of enthusiasm to follow on where you left off thus enabling this Province to fully support all our Chapters equally well for the coming year. Today we have elected a new Provincial Grand Treasurer; Peter Bartlett in whom I have every confidence. He has vast experience and inherits the task from Conrad Donaldson who has done a splendid job looking after the Provincial Funds. Conrad, thank you for all of your hard work, support and advice; so very much appreciated. I would also wish to welcome on board our new Auditor Barry White who brings with him much experience and knowledge. We have also appointed a strong and well-balanced Team of officers and one on which we can build for the future, and I am confident that we will have a good year ahead. Whilst it is extremely important to make good choices for the prosperity of the Province in the short term it is, I believe, vitally as important to plan ahead as much as is possible to always have an eye for the future. This is a subject in which I have invested a considerable amount of time thinking about. It is an area of significant importance and should be considered as one of the most important responsibilities in my role as your Grand Superintendent. Today I have taken the opportunity today to re-Introduce the Certificates of Service Awards to Royal Arch Masonry in Devonshire. This enables our Province the opportunity to give special recognition to very deserving Companions who have previously received notable appointments but continue to work tirelessly for their own Chapters and indeed for the benefit of the Province. Excellent Companions Alan Salsbury, Peter Stabb and Phillip Adam are indeed worthy recipients. This honour will continue throughout my Tenure, although the maximum number of such awards will be THREE in any one year as any more would devalue their importance. It is now just twelve months since we launched our new website so ably put together and run on a daily basis by Martin Heskins. It is worth mentioning the hosting issues we originally encountered, and I wish to thank again David Goode for giving us so much help and ongoing assistance in this specialist area. I can report that the site is doing very well and last month alone we experienced around 1800 hits. There is one area however we have recognised after our recent analysis where we could and should be able to do much better. People who visit our site are looking for information and the best source of this is submissions from the Chapters themselves – NEWS ITEMS – If I tell you approximately 40 % of our Chapters have yet to contribute anything you may or may not be surprised, but it is such a missed opportunity. Please, could I ask that you share my concerns and take this back to your Chapters. All you need to do to address this is for each Chapter to nominate one Companion to write a short report or message, perhaps including a photo about something your Chapter has achieved or is planning to do. Maybe the presentation of a Certificate, or PZ Jewel. Perhaps when Alan Salsbury has brought his lecture team in, or maybe just a Social gathering. The list is endless. You may be very pleasantly surprised just what a difference this could make to the strength of your Chapter, the level of engagement with your membership and indeed your attendance figures, you may even encourage new Exaltees to join. You will recall that, over the last year, our Provincial Grand Master Ian Kingsbury and I have shared some important initiatives which show how important the connection between the Royal Arch is in relation to the Craft, and indeed the Harmony we share. We already share our Provincial Almoner Bob Munro who has done a wonderful job over many years of exemplary service. 22

Most Excellent Grand Superintendents Annual Address 12th November 2022 con’t We did not have a Communications Officer, so we appointed Chris Hodgson who also takes responsibility for our social media accounts and works closely with Martin Heskins. He has proved a worthy choice and he also works jointly and in harmony with Clive Eden the Craft Communication officer to ensure we come from the same hymn sheet in providing information, support and encouragement for all our members. The Provincial Grand Master has worked with me to provide a letter, jointly signed by us both to introduce and extol the virtues of the Royal Arch. This to be presented to every newly Raised Master Mason on the night of their raising along with a brief explanation that joining the Royal Arch completes their journey in pure and ancient Freemasonry and one they should certainly consider, when they are ready to do so. Ideally this letter should be presented by the WM, or the Royal Arch representative. We both hope this will prove to be effective. It is for certain however that our joint communication, joined up aims, and indeed those of our new Pro Grand Master Jonathon Spence are of paramount value to Pure and Ancient Freemasonry in Devon. I wish at this point to congratulate and thank our Education Officer Alan Salsbury and his Team comprising of Chris Hodgson, Chris Wood, Peter Tempest, Tony Clapham, and more recently Dennis Challis. This Team has been busy over the last 12 months providing interesting Lectures and Presentations at numerous Chapters and Craft lodges. If anyone would like to join the Team or Book a Presentation or Lecture, please contact Alan directly. Companions If you have a meeting with little or no work to do, please get in touch with Alan. It is important that when we meet, we have an opportunity to learn more thereby gaining a better understanding of the wonderful order of the Royal Arch; please do not miss that opportunity. Only by keeping our Companions busy and engaged can we expect to retain and attract members and be sure they have joined an order worthy of their time and effort. When we Exalt a candidate that first meeting is always going to be in their mind. Make it memorable, we want them to feel special, then ensure that they continue to feel that way at future meetings. Give them some small responsibility to start off with or invite them to take part in some ritual (If only a few lines or a small reading piece). This will ensure that they feel included, well looked after and engaged. Believe me it makes a big difference to retention. I turn now to a subject that I know matters greatly to us all. I mean Charity. As a result of your generosity, we have supported many good causes and worthy Charities, helping those in need. This year we have donated to Parkinson’s and Prostate Cancer research, Macmillan Nurses, Hospice care, and SIX Foodbanks around the County, as well as private individual members and families; the list goes on. As we near Christmas I will again, on your behalf support the six foodbanks with a further £500.00 each, thereby continuing supporting those in need. Our ability to provide this finance is of course down to you and your Chapters, and I thank all who have been in a position to allocate monies to the Grand Superintendents’ Fund. I assure you all, I am most grateful for your help. It is well received and will be faithfully applied. To conclude, we have a wonderful Province here in Devonshire of which I am so extremely proud. We have many challenges ahead. The Covid Pandemic and other recent crises have and are affecting us all. They are affecting our confidence and, in many ways, our ability and desire to participate in the manner that we did previously. Please all remember, we have much to offer the world outside. Indeed, we have much to offer society and we should not be OVER cautious in saying so. When we think of change and new ideas, we need to listen and to adopt an attitude of not just saying NO we can’t do that, but rather YES, if….. and we take it from there. Thank you, Companions

Most Excellent Grand Superintendents Christmas Message 14th December 2022

Dear Companions,

Where does the time go! Christmas and the season of goodwill is upon us. We have reached that time of the year when many of us take the opportunity to get together with those whose company we enjoy, whether they be friends, family, or our fellow Companions to celebrate the Festive season. We now have a new Leader in our new Pro Grand Master Jonathon Spence, he will bring some positive changes, which I feel confident will be of benefit to our membership and that we all will wish to embrace it. He is keen to promote our core values, these being Integrity, Respect, Charity and Friendship, all great attributes that sit well with life today. Importantly he wants Freemasonry to be open and transparent and that as Freemasons, we cement our reputation as a force of good in our communities and society at large and as a thriving organisation that people aspire to. I would like to thank you all for the support that you have given to myself and my Team over the past year and especially to our new Active Officers who were appointed in November, and are already out and about enthusiastically attending many of our meetings helping to make the occasion more special for all. Your charitable donations, particularly in a time when there is much austerity have been overwhelming and I hope that you will agree that they are being used effectively for many needy causes which have been gratefully received by the recipients. May you know peace, love and light as we celebrate this special time of year, I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you in the New Year. Yours sincerely and fraternally

Chris Roach Most Excellent Grand Superintendent
