A special family event for Residents First Weekend. Meet an Egyptian priest and find out about his work, including how he mummifies bodies! Free. All children must be accompanied by an adult. St Albans Signal Box and Railway Museum Venue: Ridgmont Road, St Albans, AL1 3AJ day: Saturday and Sunday 10am – 4pm Come and discover the life of a Victorian signalman in this Grade 2 listed Signal Box. Pull the levers to operate the signals and ring the bells to send the trains from Harpenden to Napsbury. Lots of things to amuse children and the young at heart, in the signalman’s garden, in the museum and on the operating deck. Tea and coffee available. A chance to see part of St Albans’ history in action. Admission is free. Terms and conditions apply. No disabled access to operating deck.

Radio Verulam Venue: day:

Above the Courtyard Café, 11 Hatfield Road, AL1 3RR Saturday 10am – 3pm

A chance to see how radio is made. Visit the studios of our local radio station and meet the presenters and volunteers. Learn how radio is made and see the home of 92.6FM Radio Verulam. Admission is free. Unfortunately, due to steep stairs, the venue is not disability accessible.

Redbournbury Watermill Venue: day:

Redbournbury Lane, St Albans, AL3 6RS Saturday 9am – 1pm Sunday 12pm – 4.30pm

Redbournbury Mill are opening their mill to the public on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th January. There will be milling demonstrations and the mill’s Crossley HD11 engine will be running. Admission is free. For more details see www.redbournburymill.co.uk

Redbourn Village Museum Venue: day:

Redbourn Village Museum is sited in the former Silk Mill manager’s house. There are 3 rooms for you to explore, each packed full of items of local interest. In the Occupations Room you can find out about the many industries that used to thrive in Redbourn including straw plaiting, jam making, the silk mill and Brooke Bond tea factory. Upstairs in the Ann Skillman Gallery is the Millennium wall hanging, and film and photos of Redbourn’s past. There’s also a family record centre and a new activity area for children in the temporary exhibition room. If you have a smart phone, why not try our free HUNTZ smart phone app which will take you on a tour of the village?

Butterfly World is currently closed for winter until 23rd March 2015. However, we will be opening our gates especially to welcome local residents during Residents First weekend. Wrap up warm to wander around our designer gardens and meadow paths; take a look at all the work being done in preparation for the new season and how work is progressing on our brand new British Butterfly Garden. Our butterflies have gone away to keep warm over winter, but the Leafcutter Ant exhibition is a must see! Watch as they cut leaves and take them back to the nest along overhead ropes. Plenty of free parking is available and The Nectar House Cafe will be buzzing all day, so why not come along for hot drinks and fresh cakes! St Albans Cathedral will be offering an exciting range of events for Residents First Weekend. From Tower Tours to Fun Family Trails, these FREE events and exhibitions will suit the whole family. See below for specific information.

Tower Tours Venue:

Saturday 10am, 11.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm Sunday 1.30pm, 2.45pm and 4pm

This exciting tour takes you up 193 steps, winding through narrow, medieval staircases and passageways to the roof of the Norman Tower. Numbers are limited to 12 people per tour. Tickets are available from the Cathedral Box Office (located in the Gift Shop) on the day of the tour. Minimum age 11. Restrictions apply. The Cathedral reserves the right to refuse visitors admittance to the Tower and Roof spaces. See www.stalbanscathedral.org for full guidelines.

Story of Alban Exhibition day:

Saturday 10am – 4pm

Visit the Cathedral Library and learn more about Alban, Britain’s first saint.

Fun Family Trail DAY:

Textiles Exhibitions DAY:

Saturday and Sunday

See the exquisite work of the Cathedral’s Textile Guild and a wonderful selection of banners, by St Mary’s Church, North Mymms, that tell the Creation Story. Textile displays throughout the weekend.

St Albans & Hertfordshire Architectural & Archaeological Society – The Development of St Albans 1600-1914 Venue: The North Transept, St Albans, Cathedral day: Saturday 10am – 3.45pm Sunday 1pm – 5pm Come and see an exhibition describing the slow change of St Albans from what was little more than a small village in the early modern period to a bustling city on the cusp of the First World War. The story is told using a rolling slide show together with some of the many maps we have in our collection, most of which will be available for visitors to view.

St Albans New Museum and Art Gallery Project Support the renaissance: St Albans Campaign Come and see the exciting new designs and plans for the Town Hall at Residents First Weekend on 24th /25th January 2015. The church will be open, with history displays and discovery trail. Teas, coffees and home baking will be available. This family friendly event is free to enter. Drop in any time. Additional entertainment including organ music and displays by groups who use the church will be taking place.

St Helen’s Church Venue: High St, Wheathampstead, St Albans, AL4 8AA Day: Saturday 11am – 2.30pm Telephone: 01582 834031 The Friends of St Helen’s Church will be offering free guided tours of the church led by Elizabeth Eastwood, St Albans tour guide. Refreshments will be on offer in the church (contributions in aid of the Friends invited). Free public car parking in the village car park down East Lane, beside the Bull Inn.

Wheathampstead’s recently restored railway platform Venue: day:

Junction of Station Road and Cory Wright Way/Codicot Road, Wheathampstead Permanently open

The site of Wheathampstead’s disused railway station has been restored as a small outdoor museum. The site offers a history of the line and the people who used it along with a section of track, restored goods wagon and a shelter in the style of the original station buildings. Free maps for the Wheathampstead Heritage Trail will also be available. It is free to visit the site. Unfortunately there is no disabled access.

Visit the 1831 Court Room where the City Tour Guides will be re-enacting trials from 19th Century St Albans that would have taken place there. Admission Free, no ticket required. (Subject to capacity.)

These walks last between 30 and 40 minutes. Free of charge, no ticket required.

St Albans Clock Tower Venue: St Albans Clock Tower, High Street, St Albans AL3 4EL DAY: Saturday 24 January 2-4pm. No booking required Climb the 93 steps for a magnificent view of St Albans. From the only surviving Medieval town belfry in the Country.
