Art Collective ART IN PUBLIC PLACES
STAMFORD DOWNTOWN
Summer 2020
BARRY GUNDERSON
Dear Friends and Neighbors: Art in Public Places presents us all with an opportunity to re-engage with our Downtown in a responsible way. In its 27th year, this public art program is one of the City’s premier cultural events, distributed throughout Stamford Downtown. Since its inception, Art in Public Places has grown in size and prominence, providing major works of outdoor sculpture for all to enjoy. This year‘s exhibit Art Collective in Stamford Downtown, produced by Stamford Downtown features 34 sculptures on loan from six artists including Gilbert Boro, Barry Gunderson, Lorann Jacobs, David Millen, Morris Norvin and Emily Teall. It demonstrates the extraordinary commitment to art that is part of the Stamford culture. It is with deep appreciation that we recognize our sponsors: The Cingari Family, Reckson, RXR Realty & LRC Construction, Andrew and Michael Whittingham & Families, First County Bank, NBCUniversal, One Stamford Realty, The Campus, 1937 West Main Street, True North Stamford, Highgrove and United Realty, Inc.

This is an exhibit you won’t want to miss! Take some time out to tour the sculptures which grace our Downtown streets and parks this summer. It’s a great way to spend a day with family. During this unusual time, Stamford Downtown is pleased to be able to bring some whimsy to our parks and streets. We ask that you please continue to practice social distancing while you enjoy this excellent art show. Sincerely,
David Martin Mayor City of Stamford

Gilbert Boro
Sculptor Gilbert Boro is a native of the art-centric New England town of Old Lyme, CT where his custom-built fabrication studio and expansive outdoor sculpture grounds are open daily to the public. The latter are home to a permanent exhibition of more than 100 pieces of Gil’s own creations as well as invited artist’s work. Boro is a constructivist dealing with the interplay of space, place, form and scale, who believes that, “Art should not necessarily solve or interpret problems for the public but rather should help us regain the creativity we all had as children.” Boro’s sculptures are more than just objects in space; they become a place to be experienced, explored and enjoyed by all ages. gilbertboro.com

Barry Gunderson
9
Barry Gunderson lives in Gambier, OH, where he taught sculpture at Kenyon College since 1974. He retired from teaching five years ago but has not retired from the studio. Interpretations of water, contorted figures, some with peculiar thought bubbles, and four or six-legged invented critters have kept him more than busy. In each series he is trying to capture the essence of these forms, some recognizable, some not, by giving each piece a visual impact, a sense of humor, or a spark that sets them apart from their sources. Gunderson has won several Percent for Art commissions throughout the state of Ohio and has exhibited extensively. A full view of his work over the last 50 years can be seen on his website: barrygunderson.com

David Millen Energy. Balance. The vitality of the body in action. The celebration of the human spirit, a timeless combination of old and new routed in classical sculpture, yet stylized in the simplicity of form. His work has been on exhibition in many galleries, juried art shows, several universities and hospitals, private collections, the New Britain Museum and a solo exhibition at the Barnum Museum. For the past 15 years he has been teaching in his studio and sculpture garden. millensculpture.com

Morris Norvin Morris fell in love with sculpture at the MFA Boston, studying there in the teen program under Ralph Rosenthal before attending the Museum School, graduating in 1985. Since then he has shown and sold his work all over New England in varying sizes in outdoor settings, inside spaces, sets for theater and retail, and props for film. Norvin's work consists mainly of animals and people. He works in a variety of materials but prefers metal, specifically found and reclaimed objects and tools. Morris currently teaches at the MFA Boston, and owns and operates Stonybrook MASS, his school/studio in Jamaica Plain, MA. morrisnorvin.com stonybrookmass.org

Emily Teall Emily Teall (BFA '16, MA '18) is a Connecticut-based multimedia artist with particular interests in sculpture and installation art. Teall's artistic career began with a childhood curiosity about nature. Her curiosity and close observations developed through the drawing process. Organic elements continue to drive her work. Teall's art also draws from memories, experiences with anxiety, and from the role of the body in (particularly a female) identity. Teall exhibits in shows in and near her hometown of Riverside, CT; at Cornell University, where she completed her BFA; at Columbia University; in New York City; and in Hudson, NY. Teall teaches art to vulnerable students, currently at Fusion Academy and formerly at Trailblazers Academy, Rauschenbusch Metro Ministries, and the South Norwalk Community Center. Previously she taught courses to all age groups both at Silvermine Arts Center in New Canaan, CT and the Tsogyelgar Center in Ann Arbor, MI. emilyteall.com
