LETTER OF THE MONTH
IN THE FIRST OF HIS SERIES OF NZ JOURNEYS, STANCE EDITOR CHECKS OUT KIWI LONDON INVASION - Jess, via email THE VARIOUS SIGHTS OF AUCKLAND, RATED THE 3RD BEST CITY IN THE WORLD. Recently an article said that more English than ever were coming to New Zealand to live, work and travel despite the global recession. Well, it’s no suprise to me, being one of those many English who arrived in New Zealand in the middle of the recession. I have found it to be one of the best things I have ever done. I am often asked why on earth any Englishman would want to leave our country for crapy pay down here, and like many I find it hard to explain. Living in NZ presents many more opportunities, adventures and access to cheap, easy travel than I had ever thought was possible. But it’s not just about getting bitten by the travel bug. It’s about taking a risk and going outside your comfort zone and seeing what you are really made of and finding out that you are a lot braver, tougher, capable and more independent than you ever thought. Long live the rite of passge that is the great Kiwi London invasion. JESS
THE SUNDAY SESSION SNOWPLANET
MONTHLY CHECK ON WHATS HOT IN NEW ZEALAND WE CHOSE THIS PLACE We liked that it’s so close and not too expensive so you can just tear out there on a Sunday afternoon. Plus I hadn’t been skiing for over almost 10 years, so when I found myself staring down the top of a high run I was tempted to sit on my behind and slide down like a baby. GETTING THERE WAS Very easy, a 20 minute drive north from downtown Auckland. THE SCENE Just like being on the slopes there’s a toasty warm bar
where you can sit après-ski and sip a cold beer while watching the action on the snow. THE COST We were pretty surprised at how reasonably Snow Planet is priced - in the weekend you can get two hours in the snow plus gear rental for $59. THE VERDICT In all we think it’s a great place to brush up on your skills if you’re a little rusty, get your confidence up if you’re a beginner or just get in shape for the season. WORDS: MIKA
ARRIVALS - JUST ARRIVED IN NEW ZEALAND Mira Jenkins, 22, London, U.K You have just touched down in N.Z, what are your plans, and how long are you travelling? Im thinking of doing a bus tour for half my journey and hire a campervan for the other half of it, travelling for 2 months here in New Zealand then off to Australia. What are you looking forward to? Meeting lots of kiwis and other travellers. Your favourite packed items? Ipod, and if it gets warm enough my bikini.
GETTING THERE: SNOWPLANET - AUCKLAND EXIT SILVERDALE, Turn right at the first roundabout, after 100m turn right into Small Road. snowplanet.co.nz

ON THE ROAD:
FULL MOON PARTY! HAAD RIN, THAILAND There’s nothing quite like partying all night on a tropical beach. And nowhere is this more true than with the infamous ‘Full Moon’ Parties of Koh Pha Ngan. Every month as the moon becomes full, around 10,000 revelers descend on Haad Rin beach to dance the night away. Thumping tunes and cheap drinks make for an enjoyable, raucous party that lasts just about as long as the moon hangs in the sky. Started by a small group of backpackers, the parties quickly became the hot tip amongst the traveling hordes in South East Asia. These
days, they have grown massively in popularity and are considered a ‘must do’ for travelers in that part of the world. It’s often a good idea to arrive early and just soak up the odd sensation of a massive beach lit up by various luminescent bars and stalls. As the night wears on, each party is overcome by its own sense of chaos as massive sound systems pump out the loudest tunes going! There’s not much more to a Full Moon party than tunes, dance, drink and, as the sun comes up on another day in paradise, a lot of very tired but very contented travellers!

Do you think the vibe of Ibiza has changed over the years? I’m sure it has, but I have to say I don’t know much about it funny enough, even though I go there every year quite a few times, I’m flying in on Thursday for Cream and I’m flying out Friday morning. So I wouldn’t know so much if the general vibe has changed, all I can say is that the parties on Thursday night are as exciting as they have been! What advice would you give any budding DJ entering the scene at the moment? Believe in your dreams and do what you like.

The Best Nightlife in NZ - Taupo travel tip: martin The best nightlife is definitely in Taupo. Start in the pub, watching rugby with the locals and hop to a few other pubs afterwards, with your last pub being Mulligan’s. If you feel the booze kicking in take your a$$ up the stairs into the Holy Cow for a boogy and some more drinks and a whole lot of fun. Everyone is here and it’s the perfect night out! Now where was my hostel again??? No jandals/ thongs/ flip flops
foodtips.
You will go home fat! travel tip: nada The food is so good and cheap that you will not be able to stop eating. When a New Zealander invites you home you will be offered the most delicious food . Morning and afternoon tea consists of buttered pikelets, scones, mufffins - all will be home made and so moreish! Dinner will consist of either a barbeque or a roast or some fish that they just caught that day. Irresistible!
coromandeltips. Coromandel & Beaches travel tip: uk_kiwi_01 I thoroughly recommend that you
visit the Coromandel Peninsular. A three hour drive from Auckland to the South East, depending on which part of the peninsular you want to go to. Here you cannot miss the beaches, the small towns and also the lovely natural bush. Whangamata is the best beach and awesome town with a few bars to drink at after relaxing at the beach.
northlandtips.
Public Loo travel tip: tvween The worlds most remarkable ‘public loo’ can be found in Kawakawa. A little town situated about 15 km’s from Paihia. They are designed by Friedrich Hundertwasser in 1999, an Austrian artist who lived in Kawakawa, and nowadays a ‘must see’ for Hundertwasser fans.
mahinapuatips.
Mahinapua’s Poo Pub travel tip: nicoles_uk This is one of the best party pubs in the whole of New Zealand. The Lake Mahinapua’s Poo Pub, with the oldest pub owner in the world, Les. He is a great guy and has a fantastic pub. It’s awful and that makes it so great. Every evening there is a different theme and we had bin bags. So we had to create our
own costumes out of some bin bags. Hmmmm, where to start? By buying bin bags of course. Everyone created something different and it was an hilarious evening. One to never forget! Different every night.
flyingtips.
Cheap Flying Between Oz & NZ travel tip: sven3132 Since I had a Qantas ticket and my flight to NZ was included I didn’t have to worry about prices, however it might be worth checking out some airlines before buying a ticket. There are three major airlines that fly between OZ and NZ. Check out the following websites:-Jet star -Virgin Blue -Grab a seat and STA Travel
Wellingtontips.
Wellington Nightlife travel tip: travelbug2009_1 Courtenay Place is the one of the main spots to go out for an ale or 10 if you’re in that sort of mood. With Bars such as Molly Mallone’s it’s a vibrant place to go for a big night out. Dress code varies quite a bit with the posher places obviously wanting you to dress a bit nicer. Go out in smart casual and you should be okay - just don’t go into the grungier coffee shops or clubs where you will stand out like a sore thumb! STANCEMAGAZINE.CO.NZ

THE BACKPACKERS GUIDE TO TASTING FINE NEW ZEALAND WINE. WORDS: A.B
lthough Kiwis may be viewed by many overseas as beer-swilling farmers in black singlets, there are also those of us who enjoy a glass (or three) of wine – good wine. And you need look no further than our own back yard to find a world class drop, whatever your preference. New Zealand’s stunning scenery provides a range of picturesque backdrops to the vineyards and wineries scattered across the country and our “clean, green” image is part of what has attracted overseas visitors, growers and importers. Our temperate marine climate is ideal for the predominantly coastal vineyards, with strong sunlight during the day and sea breezes cooling the vines at night. If you think it’s time to discover your inner wine wanker (a la Paul Giamatti in the movie Sideways), there are more than 500 wineries to choose from in New Zealand, with different regions focusing on the grape varieties best suited to the conditions. Marlborough is our largest and most internationally recognised wine growing region, boasting distinctly vibrant and zesty fruit flavours and a reputation for world-beating Sauvignon Blanc. The region also produces a wide range of red and white table wines, as well as highly-regarded Methode Traditionelle sparkling wines. Some of Marlborough’s best known labels include Montana, Villa Maria and Cloudy Bay. Marlborough. Baked in goodness With varied topograghy, micro-climates and soil types, the Hawkes Bay region is able to produce a wide range of wine styles and although Chardonnay is the most widely planted grape variety, the long sunshine hours also make it perfect for delicious reds such as: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, as well as Pinot Noir. Here you can visit such well known wineries as Trinity Hill, Church Rd, Esk Valley, Mission Estate and Sacred Hill. And if it’s Pinot Noir you’re after, head to Martinborough STANCEMAGAZINE.CO.NZ

This is the place to head if you want a unique experience - and they also do a mean Sauvignon Blanc. Other great regions to check out are Northland, where the first vines were planted in 1819; Central Otago, where the world’s most southerly grapes are grown and arguably, NZ’s best Pinot alongside Martinborough; the rapidly expanding Matakana in Northland, where a stop at the acclaimed Ascension Vineyard is a must, and Gisborne, known as the Chardonnay capital of New Zealand and whose vines are the first to see the sun each day. don’t have to worry about driving, then swallow. Use a bit of water to rinse the glass and your mouth out in between wines and don’t be afraid to ask questions to understand exactly what it is you’re tasting. You’ll usually pay a small amount for tasting each wine and then have the option to buy by the bottle or case at a much cheaper rate.
There are just too many wineries and too many glasses of wine to be tried. So once you’ve decided where to go, what do you do when you get there? Well, that’s the fun part. When you’re at a winery, it’s all about the tasting.
Make the most of your wine tasting experience here in NZ by matching it with some of the fine cuisine found at the on-site cafés and restaurants that adjoin many of the wineries - often the winery’s restaurants are better than the dining in town. It’s a great way to not only indulge your senses but also to learn more about matching your food with the right wine.
HOW TO TASTE Firstly, when your wine is poured, examine the colour. Give the glass a good swirl to aerate the wine and then get your nose right in there and have a good sniff (you taste with your mouth and your nose). Next, take a mediumsized mouthful, ensuring your whole tongue is coated, and savour the taste. And now – to spit or swallow? If you

INTERVIEW 21
INTERVIEW: R
OSS CLARKE-J ONES & TOM CARRO LL
Dave Williams talks with big wave legend, Ross Clarke-Jones and former World Champion, Tom Carroll as they strive to hunt down the biggest storm fronts in Australia and surf them.
How did the whole concept of storm surfers come about? The concept behind Storm Surfers I guess originated back in the early 90’s . Mark Foo, from Hawaii was the first surfer I recall studying weather forecasts to chase big waves around the planet. His idea was to ride a swell in Hawaii, jump on a plane and chase the swell to California, and then catch another plane and surf the same swell in Mexico. He managed to do this once but unfortunately was killed at Mavericks attempting it a second time. Our version of Storm Surfers is a little more refined with Jet skis and meteorologists and further distances travelled around the world, but basically, we are living Mark Foos dream. Since then we have attempted missions to ride and discover the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, Typhoon swell in Japan and new frontiers in Tasmania, Australia.
What is so different about what you guys are doing with storm surfers? The biggest difference with Storm Surfers is we try to discover a new Big wave location each time and not
just attempt to ride the wave on the biggest, meanest swell but measure and answer some of the scientific questions we are always asked. We do this with the use of GPS devices and other force measuring instruments attached to our bodies during the surf. Data is recorded then calculated. We have discovered how fast we are going, how much impact our bodies are receiving during wipeouts and things we’ve always wanted to know. We can compare the forces and speeds that we obtain in different locations. So we can really determine how Heavy some waves really are. Of course, still having the fun we always did in our spring chicken days.
As surfers you learn alot about the weather, but how beneficial has it been having a meteorologist with you? Having Ben Matson on board really makes life much easier. He really knows his stuff .And, its much easier to blame him if the surf is shithouse.
Most people only see the 20
seconds of footage on the wave, how much training and preparation goes on behind the scenes? Training is essential. Some guys train extremely hard but personally I like to maintain a level of fitness that keeps me strong and confident all the time. We never know when a swell will hit so you must be ready to go all the time. Not like training for an event at a certain time. Exercise is standard gym stuff but I like to get outside more often, riding mountain bikes , hiking, snowboarding.
What advice do you guys have for anyone wanting to get involved in big wave surfing? Anyone wanting to get into big waves needs to be pure in their reason for riding them. To ride for yourself. Not for sponsorship, fame, or fortune. You need to paddle into the biggest waves you can before attempting to Tow in. Many guys leapfrog the paddling these days and straight into Towing. You need to understand the movements of big waves and rely on you own instincts before throwing a jet ski into the mix. WORDS: D. W

Onsen, Japan: Soaking in onsen (natural, mineralrich hot springs) is a centuries-old health-giving tradition in which most Japanese immerse themselves. Onsen etiquette prescribes that the soaker washes thoroughly before entering the male or female bathing area. In 2001, over 4000 Melburnians put the city’s murky Yarra River to shame by forming a pinkish sea of flesh on its banks. In 2003 Barcelona’s ‘Institut de Cultura’ was transformed by 7000 bodies who volunteered to strip off for the cause. Everybody receives a photographic print from their day of declothed glory. 300 Club, Antarctica: Initiation to the 300 Club involves the wannabe member enduring a 300ºF (149°C) change in temperature. Mother Nature takes care of the cold factor, with Antarctic winters plummeting to -100°F (-73°C). To make up the difference, nudies crank up the sauna to 200°F (93°C), then dash – steaming and screaming – to the geographic pole. The tricky part is to not run too hard, as the freezing temperature outside can damage lungs – not to mention bite exposed bits. Forty Foot Pool, Dublin, Ireland:
“Getting nude in the centre of the city is thrilling only in summer”
The historic Mortello tower, 8km (5mi) south of Dublin, is a James Joyce museum that keeps a number of treasures, including a precious edition of Ulysses illustrated by Henri Matisse. Below the tower is a seawater pool mentioned at the close of Ulysess’ first chapter. In the tradition of Joyce celebrating ‘heroic commonplace’, many locals become everyday heroes by braving the skin-shrinking temperature of the sea, ‘sans’ swimming costume. But heed the sign: ‘Togs must be worn after 9am’. Sauna, Finland: First shower, then swelter in a 100°C (210°F) hot box before streaking
starkers outside and rolling in the snow (preferably the soft powdery kind) or jumping into a small hole cut into the ice. Then repeat. In summer, gently flagellate yourself with wet birch branches (called a ‘vihta’), which stimulates circulation and smells nice. Traditionally wood heated, sauna-ing was born out of necessity, it being the only practical place to wash during long Finnish winters. Today, there are over two million saunas across the country, as well as a Finnish Sauna Society with 3100 members.

Bay to Breakers, USA: This historic foot race, traversing 12km (7.5miles) of San Francisco’s peninsula, began in 1912 as a morale booster following a devastating earthquake. Maslin Beach, Australia: Best Bum, nude Frisbee Toss and Tug-o-War are not usual Olympic events, but at Maslin Beach’s Nude Olympics in South Australia, they’re the norm. Maslin Beach’s coloured cliffs afford it some seclusion, as well as providing the perfect viewing platform (provided you’re naked) for this event, held annually in January. It celebrated its 30th year in 2005. Australia’s first nudist beach, Maslin Beach was officially declared ‘unclad’ in the late seventies.
Life-drawing Class, England: Why not make a living out of being nude? Strike a pose and hold it for anywhere from a few minutes to quarter of an hour, while studious types scrutinise your form and try to render it in charcoal. London is the home of the Pre-Raphaelite artistic movement whose manifesto was to test and defy convention. In its heyday, the mid-19th century, being nude – let alone rendering it – was downright unconventional.

P
ositioned on the scenic Avon River, it has a decidedly aristocratic, English feel to it – a far cry from the slightly less idyllic charms of the country’s other major metropolises. Cathedral Square, marked out by the attractive spire of Christchurch Cathedral, sits at the very center. The cathedral itself is a grand 19th century affair; a proud symbol of the city itself and one of its main attractions. Gardens and green spaces are dotted throughout the city. The Botanic Gardens take up a large swathe of
the west of the city. Beyond that, Hagley Park has a range of sports fields, cycling tracks and woodlands. Like the English university towns of Oxford and Cambridge, you can hire a punt and float up and down the river. For the less adventurous (or seaworthy), walks along its banks allow a glimpse of the city at its most picturesque. The Christchurch Art Gallery and the Center of Contemporary Art both have excellent collections of homegrown and international talent. Another cultural attraction well worth a visit is the National Marae, which provides plenty of fascinating insights into

Christchurch, taxis can be ruinously expensive! The Airport Flyer and number 10 Harewood–Cashmere bus both operate services to the city for a fraction of a taxi fare.Alternatively, door-to-door shuttle buses offer a service somewhere between the two.
Much of the city’s nightlife is concentrated around Manchester Street and Oxford Terrace. ‘The Strip’, as it’s known, is lined with some of the best restaurants which showcase top quality produce – one of the many things for which New Zealand is rightly famous! If you’re traveling from the airport to the center of
Christchurch has two main bus services: the free, environmentallyfriendly Christchurch Shuttle that goes around the city center, and the Red Bus ltd. Although the latter is obviously more expensive, it heads further afield and offers a combination of single tickets and all-day passes.
* BOTANIC GARDENS These free public gardens feature some of New Zealand’s best floral and plant life displays, with 10,000 species sharing the 30 hectares of land. Massive Hagley Park, complete with rugby fields and bike trails, borders the gardens.
For a slightly more unusual way of getting around the inner city, the Christchurch Tramway offers a tour that combines the history of the town with its tram heritage. Love art? check out the Arts Center, this massive complex houses cafes, art galleries, shops, a theater and two cinemas. On weekends there’s an outdoor market packed with inexpensive ethnic food, clothes and even furniture.

he city of Auckland, currently home to about a third of New Zealand’s population, is a wonderfully diverse and multicultural city. For centuries, travelers – and now backpackers – from around the world have flocked to the Hauraki Gulf, drawn by the area’s outstanding beauty. At the heart of the city lies Aotea Square, a very relaxed place to take in the warm weather, it contains some beautiful older buildings. Its central location makes it ideal as a starting point for travelers to head off on tours around the city. Not far from the square is the impressive 18th century Auckland
Art Gallery, which contains one of the largest collections of art in the country. The Auckland Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of Polynesian artifacts, is another of the city’s cultural attractions. The busy center is complemented by the tranquility offered by the gardens of Auckland, which are dotted around the city. The Auckland Domain is a large park in the heart of the city which includes a variety of flora and fauna for visitors and locals alike to enjoy. Right across the board, Auckland is a remarkably scenic city. For wonderful panoramic views of the city, travelers can take a walk up either Mount Eden or One Tree Hill,

Mount Eden is perhaps the more spectacular of the two, providing incredible views out to the islands which seem to float just off the shore. Eden’s also home to the pretty Eden Gardens Park. On the west coast of the island, just 30 minutes from Auckland’s business district, fantastic, black sand beaches line the coast. Wonderful surfing conditions also prevail at places like Karekare Beach. Not far inland are swathes of rainforest, and the stunning Karekare Falls, which provide visitors with a stunning tropical vision. Out to sea,

The Auckland bar scene is split across four distinct areas of the city, with the center of town acting as a middle ground between the (smarter, older and richer) Parnell and (younger, hipper) Ponsonby crowds. Most bars and clubs stay open till 4am on the weekends, with some bars having a lockout period from 2am meaning if you leave the venue you wont be able to go back inside 5 mins later.

f someone offered you rent free accommodation in Auckland in exchange for feeding their pets while they were away, you’d probably have a hard time turning them down. Had they told you that the pets were obese, moulting cat devils, you might have taken a little while to think about it. But despite the litter boxes and the fur, I was able to spend my Kiwi working visa living rent free in one of

the most vibrant and diverse cities in the world. When I first heard about housesitting I was overjoyed at the concept of retaining all my beloved creature comforts while spending the Winter in Auckland. You see I’ve never been one for roughing it like those crazy kids on J1 Summer. Apart from a few nights here and there in some questionable European hostels, I’m all for comfy beds and clean kitchens

and so I knew I needed to find great accommodation if my winter was to be in any way enjoyable. Admittedly, I relied on trusty Google to help me understand what could be the solution to my accommodation
peoples’ homes and pets. I doubted whether anyone would give a pair of students the responsibility of minding their most prized possessions but within a week, I had made contact with Anna and Ainsley and so too, their cats.
“I doubted whether anyone would give a pair of students the responsibility” worries. One click of the mouse later and I was directed to the HouseCarers website, a site advertising rent free accommodation in return for security and peace of mind. SEEK AND YOU SHALL FIND Although signing up to the website carried a price tag of US$45, the thoughts of living without rent for the summer was too good to resist. Almost all of the profiles on the website were those of retired couples who had lived life and wanted to spend the rest of their golden years travelling the world minding other
Just three days after arriving in Auckland, we stood outside our hotel waiting for the lovely Anna and Ainsley to collect us. As we had agreed in our countless emails back and forth, we would mind their home and pets for three weeks while they travelled around Europe. At the same time, we hoped to find further accommodation and take in all that Auckland had to offer. Our first surprise came in the form of Ainsley. Perhaps it had been foolish and ignorant of me to assume that Ainsley was a male name but nevertheless, we accepted with mild shock and embarrassment, that Anna and Ainsley were in fact lesbians and
the party they were throwing for our arrival in their beautiful home that night was minus men. I suffered a pang of guilt that night thinking about how my boyfriend must have felt being the only male in a room of at least fifteen beautiful, powerful, gay women. However, one look at him across the room, and I realised he was in his element. He had managed to find the one lesbian at the barbecue that had an interest in European soccer. THE END RESULT Our three weeks at ‘number 22’ was filled with more good times than I could have imagined. I poisoned their cat, I killed their lawn and I broke their washing machine (all accidental and equally as hilarious in hindsight, I assure you). Their cats survived the poisoning - it was only mild and was caused by eating lilies. I’ve been told the lawn is growing back. And it turns out I just couldn’t work the knobs on their big top loading washer-dryer. On the upside, we had amazing barbecues in their big back yard and

had friends over to watch rugby games on their widescreen TV. The city centre was just a few bus stops away so we had all the best bars, theatres and parks on our doorstep too. On top of all that, we’ve been invited back! THE VERDICT Over a course of three months, we paid for just two weeks accommodation in between house-sitting gigs. We stayed in two more gorgeous houses after number 22 where we had free reign over lazy boy couches, Jacuzzi baths, cinema basements
and beer fridges. While we didn’t get paid for our time house-sitting, members of the website do request a wage in turn for minding not just pets but children as well. Having said that, house-sitting is predominantly about minding a person’s home and being allowed to live in it for free as if it were your own. If done right, you can enjoy weeks in comfort while away from home and end up with wonderful friends when your stay is over, because if they’re anything like mine, they’ll want to return the favour sometime in the future.
THE WORLD IS CALLING: You can join housecarers. com for free but this puts limits on the information you can put on your profile. If you pay US$45 it gives you one year’s membership with full access.

When were you in Nelson? When did you head home? I was in Nelson for a bit less than a year, and I headed home middle of 2009. Have you found work easily since returning to Australia? I wouldn’t say it was easy. It took almost two months to find something good. But I knew it would be like that. Has your experience abroad been an advantage? I think so. The job I was doing in Nelson definitely helped qualify me for the roles I looked at here. Employers like people who have been overseas for a bit.

LAST NOTE Pamplona, Spain
The festival of San Fermin, or the Pamplona bull running as it’s more commonly known outside Spain officially begins at midday on 6th July every year with the ‘chupinazo’ which takes place on the balcony of the Casa Consistorial in Pamplona. Thousands of people congregate in the square awaiting the mayor’s official announcement that the fiestas have begun, a rocket is launched and the partying begins.
