Sean and Kimberly Wilmert took over the ownership of the Ogden Mustangs in 2020. Hockey is nothing new for the Wilmerts. Sean began his hockey career in the 1970s, lacing up his first pair of skates at age three in a small town in Minnesota. He later attended Shattuck St. Mary’s—one of the top hockey schools in the world that has produced stars like Jonathan Toews, Sidney Crosby, and Zach Parise, among many others who have donned NHL jerseys over the years. Following his time at Shattuck, Sean played Junior A hockey in Canada for a year before joining the USHL’s Des Moines Buccaneers to complete his junior career.
“Hockey is a unique sport, and the junior level is the most valuable stage in these young athletes’ development and journey. Kimberly and I set a goal to keep the Mustangs in Ogden and to elevate your Ogden Mustangs to one of the highest levels in the world for 16- to 20-year-olds, allowing them to continue chasing their dreams of playing NCAA hockey or making it to the NHL,” Sean said.
After his junior career, Sean advanced to NCAA hockey at Minnesota State University, where he played for four years before signing his first professional contract. He went on to spend seven years at the professional level—a period during which he met Kimberly. The couple met in 1997 while Sean was playing in Nashville, Tennessee. A longtime hockey fan herself, Kimberly grew up following the Boston Bruins. Together, they have a son, Cole, who is currently playing in Saskatchewan. Many fans may recognize the name Cole Wilmert, as he played for the Mustangs during the 2022-23 season before deciding to pursue opportunities in Canada for the 2023-24 season.
It has always been Sean and Kimberly’s mission to elevate the Ogden Mustangs to one of the highest levels of
A hockey in North America. Achieving this vision involved a multi-step process, beginning with the team’s move from the now-defunct WSHL to the USPHL—the largest Junior A league in the world. In 2022, it became official that the Ogden Mustangs were approved to make the final jump to the NCDC for the 2023-24 season. The National Collegiate Development Conference (NCDC) is a 19-team league renowned for advancing young players to the NCAA and NHL. This milestone represents a significant step forward for our fans, the city of Ogden, and the state of Utah, as no Junior team in Utah has ever played at this level.
“It was always our plan to move the Mustangs to one of the top leagues in the world for developing young players for the NCAA and the NHL. Over the past two years, the NCDC has seen more players drafted into the NHL than any other Tier 2 league in the world. Bringing this level of hockey to the city of Ogden and to Mustang fans is truly a dream come true,” Sean said.
Orlando returns to the Mustangs in 2024-2025 for his 5th season. After a competitive first three years in the Mountain Division, Orlando landed in Ogden after spending the 2019-2020 season with the Austin Bruins of the NAHL where he served as the Assistant Coach. Orlando’s offensive prowess helped lead the forward group as well as the power-play units. Orlando takes pride in his team’s power play execution which has been at the top of their respective divisions for the past 4 seasons, 2019-2020 Austin Bruins 23.1% and 2020-2023 Ogden Mustangs 22.3%, 26.3%, & 35.8% (2023 being the top % in the USPHL). In 2022-2023 the Ogden Mustangs set the all-time Single Season Power Play Goal record with 93 power play goals in just 52 regular season games. Orlando’s ability to break down film and access team strengths and weaknesses has been crucial for all of the programs he’s coached to this point.
Before heading to Austin, Orlando previously served as Head Coach of Villanova University (ACHA) from 2017-19. Orlando saw great success with the IceCats in his twoyear stint with the program and appearing in the ECHA playoffs in both seasons. In his first season, the Villanova University IceCats went the distance to the ECHA Championship. The Cinderella story fell just short in overtime to Drexel University. His second year eventually paved the way for a record of 33-29-3 combined as Head Coach. Before making his collegiate head coaching debut, he
also served as Assistant Coach at Temple University (ACHA) for two seasons.
While he was a player, Orlando’s career covered a vast majority of the United States and parts of Canada. He was a member of the New Mexico Renegades of the WSHL in 2011-13, where he was the leading scorer and Captain. He then played in the KIJHL and EHL before moving onto Division III college hockey. He attended and played hockey for SUNY-Canton (Division III) before his career was cut short due to injury. However, this helped pave the way for him to jump straight into a career in coaching that has been nothing short of astounding.
The Ogden Mustangs are pleased to welcome back former Asst. Coach and General Manager Nick Dreyer. Departing Ogden following the conclusion of the 202122 season, Dreyer spent the past two seasons as Coach and General Manager of the Provo Predators NCDC program. During his time in Provo, Dreyer built the program from the ground up and played the lead role in the NCDC transition. Last season, the Predators finished 3rd in the Mountain Division and were one of only two teams to obtain a winning regular season record against the Mountain Division Champion, Ogden Mustangs. This will be Dreyer’s 5th season in Junior Hockey and 12th season coaching overall. He began his Junior
Steve joins the Mustangs from the Utah Wolves AA and AAA programs in Salt Lake City, UT where he was an assistant coach for one season. In the lone season with the Wolves, the AA program finished the season as the 33rd ranked team in the country. Prior to joining the Wolves, Soto had served as an assistant coach for the West Coast Renegades AAA. His head coaching resume boasts stints with the Utah Golden Eagles 14U and Weber State University. Soto was with the Weber State program from 20072011and in one of the seasons, the team finished 15th in the nation in the ACHA DII. He is also served as the coaching director of the Davis County Youth Hockey Association (DCYHA).
Soto’s playing career also saw him compete in the Western States Hockey League during his Junior career. He played for both the Alaska Sinbad Sailors and the Flagstaff Mountaineers. His hockey career eventually led him to Og-
coaching career as an Assistant Coach and GM for the Ogden Mustangs during their inaugural USPHL season in 2020-21. During his time in Ogden he formed a great relationship with Head Coach Kenny Orlando and looks forward to teaming up again in the pursuit of a National Championship.
den and joined the Weber State University program where he played all four years of college and then eventually residing in the Greater Salt Lake area. He now lives in Farmington, UT with his two daughters Taygen and Cambria.
Billeting a Mustang is more than just housing a player. This is an opportunity to expand your family and create lifelong relationships. For roughly eight months of the year, these boys come into our homes and our families. They imprint on us, and we all build memories that are unique and new.
The experience of bringing in a boy from a different country or a different part of the U.S. has been so amazing. One of our boys is from Sweden, and he gave us a phrase book of common sayings. (“Det är ingen ko på isen.” Translation: “There is no cow on the ice - don’t panic.” Or, “Ge järnet.” Translation: “Give the iron - give it your all.”) Sometimes you get to house a kid close to your childhood home and it is like traveling back in time. They bring in a piece of your life you might not know you was missing.
Each boy has a different background and upbringing, and when they get to Ogden, they may not know what to expect. Through being a billet, you give them stability, family and a place to decompress from the stress of the game.
The boys come into the game of hockey and play with their whole hearts. When they come home on a high from a great win, they want to talk about the plays and the events on the ice and share with you their pride in the win.
In defeat, they look for acceptance, understanding and encouragement from their family away from home. As we all know, these boys are just as hard on themselves as
they are confident.
Through seeing the players on and off the ice, you realize they are just boys with the need of a place to call home while they are away from their own. We worry when they get hurt, we cheer when they succeed, and we feel for them when they have a loss.
If you have ever thought about hosting a player and want to learn more about it, please reach out by sending an email to billets@ogdenmustangs.com. As former Mustang goalie Owen Yancey would say, “LET’S GOOOO!”

Murray the Mustang is the official Mascot and #1 fan of the Ogden Mustangs hockey team.
During game days, he can be found around the rink corralling the players together to get them pumped up to take the ice. When it comes to in-game entertainment, there is no one who does it better than Murray and his buddies.
Throughout the week, Murray is an active member of the Ogden community – along with players, coaches and staff – visiting local schools and non-profit businesses to teach the foundational characteristics of being a Mustang on and off the ice.
If you are interested in having Murray come visit your school, business or event, please contact the Mustangs at Marketing@ogdenmustangs.com.
