Booth to business: A Farmers Market Ogden fairytale WRITTEN BY HAILLE VAN PATTEN
Assistant Communications Coordinator, Ogden Downtown Alliance
“I didn’t mean to create the company,” Bethany Tracy laughed when asked about the start of Hippie Skin, a 100 percent natural skin care line. Tracy had been struggling with acne but wasn’t satisfied with the misleading ingredients of existing skin care treatments. Her personal mission became breaking down natural skin care. Tracy began experimenting with a variety of plant-based oils, and other natural materials. “I found a system that worked for me,” she said. “I haven’t had problems since,” Tracy noted, in reference to her prior struggle with acne. Tracy decided to market her Hippie Skin products for the first time at Farmers Market Ogden, a series providing awareness of, and access to, local agriculture. Tracy was looking for a way to get in front of the community quickly at a low cost. “I love the farmers market...I love the idea of a community coming together,” said Tracy. With one small table and three Hippie Skin products, Tracy made her Farmers Market Ogden debut. The community’s overwhelming positive response to Hippie Skin prompted Tracy to grow her business. After creating an ecommerce site and social media pages, Tracy quickly began selling Hippie Skin nationwide. Hippie Skin was headquartered in Tracy’s basement for about a year before moving into a small office space. “I believe in the power of vision, “Tracy shared. Over the past three years, Tracy and her Hippie Skin team had been looking to move into a larger space for the ever-growing business. She kept telling herself she wanted a warehouse space for Hippie Skin with room for a yoga studio. Tracy’s once vision is now a reality at the current location of HEAL Yoga Studio and Hippie Skin at 2424 Wall Ave. in Ogden. What was once three products has now grown into a thriving business of natural deodorants, mineral makeup, vegan friendly items, and more. HEAL Yoga Studio, which shares a space with Hippie Skin, also is a product of Tracy’s passion. After getting her yoga certification in 2011, Tracy began teaching around Ogden. “Yoga was the first thing I was able to find that I enjoyed doing for physical exercise,” Tracy said. HEAL provides a beginner-friendly atmosphere
that empowers participants to challenge themselves, relax, and connect. Visit healyogastudio.com for a full list of classes, descriptions, and pricing information. To add to Tracy’s successes, she was recently named “Entrepreneur of the Year” at the Indie Ogden Awards, a ceremony designed to recognize businesses, people and events contributing to the community. The awards ceremony happened to fall on International Women’s Day, which Tracy felt was fitting considering her business’ primary audience. “I think it was [kind of] an affirmation to me, too...I’m doing what I need to do and I’m where I need to be,” said Tracy. When asked if she had any advice for other Farmers Market Ogden vendors considering making the jump from booth to brick and mortar store, Tracy shared, “You’re always going to think you’re not ready.” She touched on the fact that it requires a certain amount of energy and creativeness day-to-day. “If there’s something that feels right to you and you know it’s the move you need to make - listen to that.” Connect with Hippie Skin and HEAL Yoga Studio on social media and online. Don’t Suffer! Get relief from Sciatica BY ANGIE ERICKSON,

re you experiencing pain that radiates from your lower back, through your buttocks, and down the back of your thigh? If so, you may be suffering from sciatica. “When people have symptoms, namely pain, radiating into their lower extremities by definition they have sciatica,” said Dr. Nathan J. Savage DPT, PhD with Total Rehab, Inc. “For most people the cause of these symptoms is their lower back. However, in some patients we find out that their symptoms are related to a hip joint problem or some other factor contributing to their pain.” The most common cause of sciatica is a bulging or
herniated disc in the spine. The symptoms that radiate into the lower extremity can be more severe and debilitating for patients than their back pain. Patients with sciatica often experience sharp pain, piercing or throbbing pain, aching, along with burning, tingling, or numbness into their lower extremity. For those experiencing back pain or sciatica, it is important to seek examination and treatment early on, ideally within the first few weeks of developing symptoms. This is particularly important for those with sciatica because these patients are at higher risk for developing chronic pain and (if not treated properly) more likely to require costly and invasive treatments, including surgery. “It is best if we can see them within the first couple

aring specialists at Northern Utah Rehabilitation Hospital are providing outpatient rehabilitation services that help patients overcome debilitating challenges and help people get back to a normal life. “If the patient is here for back pain, we help them have a pain-free life. “Audrey has had a history of back problems and was in a brace for a very long time,” said Stephanie Jolley, Outpatient Occupational Therapist at Northern Utah Rehabilitation Hospital. “She had lost a lot of her functional abilities and had become very depressed.” Hernandez spent 10 days at Northern Utah Rehabilitation Hospital’s inpatient program and developed enough strength to get out of the back brace. She also gained confidence that helped with her depression and gave her the strength mentally to get out of bed. In mid-March she started outpatient therapy at Northern Utah Rehabilitation Hospital. “She comes here for outpatient therapy three times a week to help maintain and continue to build the strength before she goes back in for surgery,” said Jolley. The therapists at Northern Utah Rehabilitation Hospital are helping Hernandez prepare for her next two surgeries so the process will be a little easier for her. In the short time that she has been there, they have seen amazing improvements and Hernandez would agree. “My experience at Northern Utah Rehabilitation Hospital has been over the top. How school psychologists can help students cope with unhealthy anxiety BY LAUREN RICH Special to the Standard-Examiner
A
nxiety is a normal and very common adaptive reaction that both adults and children feel in order to alert our bodies to danger and the need for arousal. Healthy anxiety can drive us to change our environment for the better, push us to perform well and problem solve. Unhealthy anxiety, or anxiety that is so pervasive that it’s overwhelming and illogical, can be debilitating for adults and especially children. Worry, the fear that future events will be negative, is the primary characteristic of anxiety. Children who experience anxiety are much more likely to see small daily events as threatening. For example, giving a small book report presentation to the class might cause minor anxiety feelings 8
for most children, however the anxious child will believe his/her performance will be a total failure. There may be valid bases for worry in any situation; anxiety occurs when the fear is out of proportion to the situation and is unrealistic. Imagined and real threats are capable of triggering anxious reactions and feelings. In a classroom, children who are experiencing anxiety are likely to engage in behaviors that help them avoid situations that are threatening. They may be withdrawn, not initiate interactions, select easier tasks and avoid situations that may lead to failure. They may feel uncomfortable with new situations and avoid social interactions like group conversations.

How can school psychologists help?
School psychologists are in a unique position to help support students with anxiety, as are teachers in instructing those students. For a full list of how school psychologists can help, visit NASPOnline.org and search “anxiety disorders.” In the meantime, here is a sampling of some ways they can help:w • They can help teachers understand and implement some best practices in their classroom that help all students, but particularly students with anxiety. This may include establishing predictable routines, setting clear and reasonable expectations, breaking tasks in manageable units, providing opportunities for practice/rehearsal, pairing anxious students with supportive peers, giving special responsibilities, noticing when students become anxious and allowing them time to relax, reducing/avoiding unexpected situations, and moving students to less distracting areas of the room.
• With parent permission, school psychologists also can work directly with students to build anxiety-coping and management skills. This could include helping students identify when they are anxious at school and how to selfregulate. • School psychologists can help school teams create 504 plans when necessary for a student with anxiety. • School psychologists can help school teams create environments and school cultures that are positive, predictable and help reduce anxiety-inducing situations for students. • They can develop specific behavior intervention plans that direct teachers how to help students with anxiety participate in school appropriately and successfully. • They can consult with parents who have concerns. Please call your school’s psychologist and discuss what you are noticing in your child and what you can do together to produce best outcomes for your child.

anxiety at home. Parents can be a critical force in the child’s life to help them notice, control and cope with anxiety. Suggestions include: • Be consistent, especially when handling problems and discipline. Less guesswork for the child means less worry about what may or may not happen. • Be patient and prepared to be a good listener. • Avoid being overly critical, impatient or cynical. • Remember to keep realistic, doable goals for your child. • Make sure you aren’t communicating that perfection is expected. • Keep consistent but flexible routines for things like homework, chores, activities, bedtimes, etc. • Accept mistakes. Normalize mistakes for your child as part of growing up and reaffirm that no one does everything perfectly. • Praise and reinforce effort, even if they succeeded less than expected. • Practice upcoming events that are causing anxiety for your child, like speeches/performances. • Practice and teach simple strategies that can help with anxiety. Some of these include organizing materials, creat-
ing small self-talk scripts (i.e. “I can do hard things,” “I can control my body”) they can use in stressful situations, and learning how to relax in stressful conditions. • Reasoning is often not effective in reducing anxiety, do not criticize your child for not being able to respond to rational approaches. • Seek outside help if the problem is persistent and interferes with daily life. Anxiety is a common issue that impacts children and adolescents today. It can frequently be mistaken for other issues such as attention deficits, lack of motivation or low ability. When untreated and unidentified, it can increase over time, creating more problems as the child ages. In the Davis County School District, we frequently see high-achieving, motivated students whose anxiety often flies under the radar because they are still succeeding in school. This anxiety, paired with the drive for high achievement, can be harmful for students and often leads to burn out and unhealthy coping skills. With appropriate support, children with anxiety can be successful, healthy and happy. School psychologists are here to help; please get to know your child’s school psychologist and reach out to them for assistance.

Life improved after full mouth makeover BY ANGIE ERICKSON,

P
aul Jensen recently had a full mouth makeover at Affleck Dental in Clearfield, improving his life immensely. The 69-year-old man has dealt with a category 3 overbite pretty much his entire life. The unalignment of his upper and lower teeth had caused his teeth to wear out and chip off down to the soft part of the tooth. “Before I had this done I was biting the side of my cheek at least once a week, making it sore all the time,” he said. “I haven’t bitten the side of my cheek in over a year now. It’s made life a lot nicer for me.” The process began over three years ago, when Jensen’s regular dentist said something to him that really hit home. “My dentist told me that I’ve gotten my kids taken care of and now it’s time to take care of myself,” he said. “He told me I needed to get something done right away because my teeth were so worn out.” His dentist referred Jensen to Dr. Affleck at Affleck Dental in Clearfield. For 15 years, Dr. Affleck has been a prosthodontist who specializes in the restoration and replacement of missing or damaged teeth. He uses prosthetic solutions including dental implants, dentures and veneers to help patients improve their oral health and quality of life. At Affleck Dental, Jensen had two implants and the rest of his teeth capped, meaning Dr. Affleck grounded the teeth down and put permanent crowns on them. Prior to that, he had braces for 2.5 years to move the teeth to make the procedure possible. Getting the implants took about five months, but Jensen said Dr. Affleck always provided a temporary implant so he didn’t have to go toothless while waiting for the bone to heal. “They are very pleasant people to work with,” Jensen says about the staff at Affleck Dental. “I was a little questionable at first, but after I realized what they were doing, they were very polite and accommodating. If I ever needed anything at all I would just call them and they’d take care of it right away.” For Jensen, the procedure has been life changing and

What Is Grief?
T
he death of a loved one is life’s most painful event. People’s reactions to death remains one of society’s least understood and most off-limits topics for discussion. Often grievers are left totally alone in dealing with their pain, loneliness, and isolation. Grief is a natural emotion that follows death. It hurts. Sadness, denial, guilt, physical discomfort, and sleeplessness are some of the symptoms of grief. It is like an open wound that must heal. At times it seems as if this healing will never happen. While some of life’s spontaneity begins to return, it never seems to get back to the way it was. It is still incomplete. We know, however, that these feelings of being incomplete can disappear. Healing is a process of allowing us to feel, experience, and accept the pain. In other words, we give ourselves permission to heal. Allowing ourselves to accept these feelings is the beginning of that process. The healing process can take much less time than we have been led to believe. There are two missing parts. One is a safe, loving, professionally guided atmosphere in which to express our feelings; the other is knowing how and what to communicate.
12
The Grieving Process When we experience a major loss, grief is the normal and natural way our mind and body react. Everyone grieves differently, but at the same time there are common patterns people tend to share. For example, someone experiencing grief usually moves through a series of emotional stages, such as shock, numbness, guilt, anger, and denial. And physical responses are typical also. They can include: sleeplessness, inability to eat or concentrate, lack of energy, and lack of interest in activities previously enjoyed. Time always plays an important role in the grieving process. As the days, weeks and months go by, the person who is experiencing loss moves through emotional and physical reactions that lead toward acceptance, healing and getting on with life as fully as possible. Sometimes a person can become overwhelmed or bogged down in the grieving process. Serious losses are never easy to deal with, but someone who is having trouble beginning to actively re-engage in life after a few months should consider getting professional help. For example, if continual depression or physical symptoms such as loss of appetite, inability to sleep, or chronic lack of energy persists,it is probably time to see a doctor. Asthma
Triggers and potential causes
A
sthma, a chronic lung disease that results in inflamed and narrowed air passages, affects millions of people around the world. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute notes that more than 25 million people in the United States have asthma. When airways narrow and swell, they can produce extra mucus. Breathing becomes quite difficult when asthma is present. The Mayo Clinic says that asthma is just a minor nuisance for some people, while others may experience life-threatening attacks. Recognizing potential triggers and avoiding them can help control symptoms. The changing of seasons can be a tricky time for asthma sufferers because of the increase in air irritants. Pollen and mold spores are known asthma triggers. Spring cleaning around the house also may trigger an attack if dust, pet dander or particles of cockroach waste are stirred up. People who are allergic to certain substances also may discover these same allergens can trigger asthma attacks. Irritants in the environment also can bring on such attacks. The Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America indicates that, while people may not be allergic to certain irritants, irritants can bother inflamed and sensitive airways. Cigarette smoke, wood fires, charcoal grills, smog, strong fumes, and chemicals also may trigger asthma attacks. People with asthma also must take care when exercising or when they develop respiratory illnesses. Exerciseinduced bronchoconstriction can appear after several minutes of sustained exercise. The AAFA also notes that colds, flu and sinus infections are among the most common asthma triggers in children. Although many asthma triggers are known, researchers continue to explore what causes asthma. The NHLBI says that people may be more likely to develop asthma if: • They have atopy, an inherited tendency to develop allergies. • Their parents have asthma . • They were exposed to certain respiratory infections during their childhood. • They had contact with allergens while their immune systems were developing. A theory known as the 'hygiene hypothesis' suggests another potential cause for asthma. Researchers say that 14
growing concerns with hygiene and sanitation have removed many of the types of environmental exposures that once helped children develop strong immune systems. As a result, an increased risk for atopy and asthma has surfaced. Asthma sufferers can try to avoid common triggers and may find that medication and other lifestyle changes can help control their symptoms. Healthier You — April 2019
