Ogden Pioneer Days 2019
85th Anniversary
E
ighty-five years ago, at the height of the Great Depression, then-Ogden Mayor Harm Peery launched a summertime celebration to lift the spirits of northern Utah families. That tradition carries on today at Ogden Pioneer Days, which continues to honor the strength of a community that was forged by the heat of railroad steel. Each year the week of July 24, downtown Ogden comes alive with not only the spirit of Utah’s unique pioneer heritage, but the spark of future prosperity. Like their forefathers before them, folks pass the golden days of summer at Ogden Pioneer Days’ concerts, art strolls, and parades that are held along Ogden’s tree-lined streets. And for five nights, rodeo fans of kinds and ages pack picturesque Ogden Pioneer Stadium, where the rodeo has been held since its founding. The roar of the crowd for Utah’s only Top 5 PRCA Rodeo that’s also been inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, can be heard for miles. While more than eight decades have passed since the inaugural days — and the celebration has changed with the times — Ogden Pioneer Days continues to take us back from where we came — to the roots of our free country, to the untamed wilds, to the hearty stock of men and women who trekked westward into the horizon of the wild west. Join us July 19-24 for the ride of the summer, a tradition that has withstood the test of time.

Pioneer Days Committee Chairman Every summer for the past 85 years, the Ogden Pioneer Days Foundation has celebrated the lives of our pioneer ancestors and our western way of life. Our goal ever July is to remember those noble souls who came to this great valley over one 170 years ago to build a strong and vibrant community. With this in mind, our organization is pleased to present numerous cultural, social, educational and religious events to honor their memory and the spirit of the American West. We are delighted to once again announce that the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo has been voted by the members of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association as one of the top 5 best large outdoor rodeos in the United States. I am told year after year that our community and numerous rodeo volunteers are the cowboys’ favorite fans. They also tell me than there isn’t a more beautiful place. They, like us, love to see the towering mountains to the east of the stadium. As chairman, I wish to thank our many dedicated volunteers, generous donors and sponsors for making our annual celebration a great success. And in a special manner, on July 24, we will pause to remember and honor a great and noble friend who was the heart and soul of Ogden Pioneer Days, Mr. Rich Brewer. He and his sweet wife Jane have been a driving force to keep the spirit of Pioneer Days alive and well. On behalf of my fellow trustees, I sincerely hope you will enjoy this year’s celebration and the great memories it will create for you and your family. Happy Trails, Alan E. Ogden City Council The Ogden City Council recognizes the Ogden Pioneer Days Celebration as an important time for Ogden City. Each year these events promote Ogden’s heritage and provide great opportunities for our community to come together.
Welcome, Rodeo Fans! I want to personally welcome you to the 85th Annual Ogden Pioneer Days celebration in beautiful downtown Ogden and extend my best wishes to you and your family as we celebrate our pioneer heritage. The Ogden Pioneer Days Committee does amazing work year after year and that is why the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) ranked Pioneer Days Rodeo as “One of the Top Five Large Outdoor Rodeos in the Country.” After recently celebrating the 150-year anniversary of the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in Ogden, there has been a special appreciation for history and the lasting foundations that have made this community what it is today. With the rodeo coming upon this milestone, there isn’t enough that can be said about the events that have led up to 85 years of Western-culture celebrated in our City, and 85 years of diverse families coming together every summer to spend time at this gathering. The people that have founded and thrive in our town are true to their roots, and we hope our “Still Untamed” tagline rings true to your Ogden experience. The Pioneer Days schedule of events is flush with activity, and Ogden has you covered on the outside if you chose to explore our notoriously independent and award-winning owner-operated restaurants, shops, and galleries downtown. There are indoor adrenaline-fueled thrills near The Junction, and low-key relaxation opportunities in our foothills and river parkway corridor offer numerous trail systems with rewarding views. Initially founded as a railroad town and major hub of commerce, Ogden has a rich history of being a bit rough and tumble. We embrace that colorful history, but I’m confident that now you’ll find the Ogden environment invigorating and inspiring with friendly, outgoing residents who are passionate about their hometown. The athletes and entertainers are ready, the stadium seating has been upgraded and the City is ready to host Utah’s biggest and best statehood celebration. Saddle up, let’s Rodeo! Sincerely,
(From left to right, back) Marcia White, Bart Blair, Doug Stephens, Luis Lopez (Front) Ben Nadolski, Richard Hyer and Angela Choberka

7:30 pm - Ogden Pioneer Stadium In addition to joining the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, Ogden Pioneer Days is proud to be listed in the Top 5 PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) Rodeos in America! We were given this recognition at the 2017 PRCA Awards Banquet at the Wrangler National Finals in Las Vegas. Ogden Pioneer Days was AGAIN nominated for Best Large Outdoor Rodeo in the PRCA. Of course we had our fingers crossed hoping for that number one spot, but, it is a great honor
just to be nominated to the top five rodeos of more than 700 rodeos within the PRCA, and we are fully committed to being number one at some point in the future. These honors are all the result of the Ogden Pioneer Days Committee, volunteers, sponsors, donors, cowboys and cowgirls, stock providers, community and especially you, the fans, for giving us what it takes to be a Top Five Rodeo. Thank you, everyone, for making the Ogden Pioneer Days rodeo shine and standout!

Roger Mooney
Stace Smith
Rodeo Announcer
Stock Contractor
John Harrison
Born and raised in Ellijay, Georgia, Mooney’s career began by accident in 1984 when in college, he stepped in for the scheduled rodeo announcer who had a heart attack. In short time, Mooney went from being a contestant to one of the best announcers on the circuit with announcing accolades that include 2-time NFR, 5-time Calgary Stampede, 5-time Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo, 10-time High School Rodeo Finals and the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association Announcer of the Year.
The Greatest Show on Dirt! Currently, Stace Smith produces more PRCA rodeos than any other stock contractor in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and for twelve years has been named PRCA Stock Contractor of the Year. In addition to ProRodeo's, we also produce a number of PBR, Invitational, and Private Convention events throughout the year. Smith Pro Rodeos is not only committed to providing top livestock, but also to producing a one of a kind rodeo experience. Since 2006, Smith Pro Rodeos has had multiple rodeos nominated for PRCA Rodeo of the Year in all four categories. We are proud to be the only rodeo in Utah that Stace Smith’s Pro Rodeo is a part of.
John has worked rodeos from coast to coast and has made 5 appearances at the prestigious Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, NV, three times as a specialty act performer and twice as a barrelman. 2012, 2014, 2015 John picked up the coveted award of Comedy Act of the Year. In 2014 he brought home the gold buckle that represents his achievement of Coors Man in the Can. He feels blessed to be doing what he loves and with those he loves at his side. John married in 2006. He and his wife Carla have had four children; daughters Addison & Billie (now an angel in heaven), Charlee, and son, Cazwell.

Raymond Moser Ray was a man of honor and integrity who knew history played a major role in the development of rodeo, and it was his passion to keep the western spirit alive. He always dreamed of being a cowboy and began living that dream in 1952 when he started riding bareback horses and bulls at the Red Rock Ranch. He went to Shorty Thompson’s arena on a regular basis to hone his skills. At one of the rodeos he attended, one of the clowns didn’t show up and he was talked into taking his place. A passion was born. His career took off in the mid 1960’s, soon after he got his membership in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, when he became the first rodeo clown from Utah. His many years with the PRCA took him throughout Utah, the western and central states and Canada. He worked with the Bar T Rodeo for many years, but was especially excited when he was able to work his hometown rodeo – Ogden Pioneer Days. He also worked college and high-school rodeos and was invited to clown at the National Finals. He was famous for being “the man in the barrel.” He had many jokes and acts, two of his favorite were with his trick pony “Cappy,” and his dog “Toby.” Roy never hesitated to jump in front of a bull to keep the cowboys safe. He never missed an opportunity to help a young person get into the rodeo business, including his two sons and two grandsons who followed in his footsteps as contestants and clown/bullfighters. Ray probably work at least 630 rodeos during his successful 25-30 year career. He was a proven leader, mentor and master of his craft, and was paid tribute to for having a major influence in many lives as well as the sport of rodeo. 46
Val Leavitt
Big, tall and tan, he excelled at being an announcer and was loved by the cowboys, the clowns and the crowd. His personality, mannerisms, true gentlemanly ways, and love for the west and all things rodeo were his way of life. He grew up working with his father in rodeo production, and began his announcing career in 1956 with Vern Oyler’s “miniature rodeo” in Garland, and went on to announce The Little Buckaroo Rodeo throughout Idaho and Utah. For over 40 years he announced at all levels of rodeo in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and Nevada. His wife, Nancy was by his side keeping track of the riders and ropers names, along with their stats, which allowed Val to keep talking, using his own quips, banter and knowledge to present an event like no other. He was a monument to generations of youth as he felt rodeo was one of the few sports where the individual could compete on his own against the world. His booming voice was a legend. He was master of the “mic” for rodeos, horse shows, chariot races, horse pulling contests, ball games, fashion shows, talent show, auctions and western style competitive games, who promoted the western lifestyle from his signature neck scarf to his humble cowboy ways. Gerald Young Gerald spent his youth growing up on the YR family ranch in Oakley, where he enjoyed working with cattle and with the interaction with all the animals on the ranch. As he got older he tried his hand at bareback riding and steer riding. Deciding this activity was too hard on his body, he determined to provide others with horses to ride and went into business for himself, creating Young and Young Rodeo Company. He started small, picking up horses whenever possible, and constructing a make-shift arena out of snow fence with
lighting provided by vehicles. As participation grew, so did his desire for a regular rodeo arena, and in 1940 local leaders decided to build an arena in the town park. As the town grew, Young and Young also grew with over 40 rodeos contracted annually, his favorite being the weekly Lagoon rodeo Realizing a need for a cowboy’s association, he was instrumental in forming and organizing the Rocky Mountain Rodeo Association, from which he received the RMCA Outstanding Service Award in 1961. He received
several other awards over the years. A homegrown cowboy, plus his love of animals, combined with the desire to rodeo, equaled the best of the best, Young and Young Rodeo Company. He not only served the
local and national rodeo industry, he also served his local community and county as a County Commissioner, Chairman of the Oakley Independence Day rodeo, Grand Marshall for the Independence Day parade, recipient representing Summit County for the National Day of the American Cowboy, and has been showcased in a number of publications. His wife and children worked beside him, and several children are still a large part of the daily management and operation of the ranch.

WESTERN FILM FESTIVAL Western Film Festival presents
Maverick Monday, July 15, 7 pm Ogden Amphitheater Maverick is recreated from the character James Garner created in the 1950s TV program. Maverick is a gambler who would rather con someone than fight them. He needs an additional three thousand dollars in order to enter a Winner Take All poker game that begins in a few days. He tries to win some, tries to collect a few debts, and recover a little loot for the reward, all with a light hearted air. He joins forces with a woman gambler with a marvelous, though fake, southern accent as the two both try and enter the game.

MISS RODEO UTAH FAREWELL
McKaylie Richins
One year ago, on July 24, 2018 my name was called as Miss Rodeo Utah 2019. How thankful I am to have this opportunity and know that hard work pays off in achieving your dreams. This dream began when I was just eight years old. It was not an easy journey. There were hardships, tears, self-doubt, triumphs, cheers, and some of the greatest blessings along this journey to ‘The Crown’! The first half of my reign has been unforgettable. Many miles flown and driven across this great country; but my favorite miles have been right here in our beautiful state of Utah. I have driven the ribbon of asphalt from the red rocks of southern Utah to the snowy mountains of northern Utah, I feel so honored to represent such a beautiful and diverse state along with the amazing people that call it home. From the golden wheat fields of Kansas to the hot sunshine of Florida, I have been lucky enough to see some remarkable country and meet some great people. The many people I have met on the rodeo trail have become cherished friends and rodeo family that will last far beyond ‘The Crown’. I could not be where I am today without a very special group of people who have always been there by my side. To my amazing parents, Jeff and Lisa Richins, thank you for all of your sacrifices, encouragement, love and support through my
journey. Thank you for teaching me to be kind, genuine and to be ME. I love you tons of marshmallows! To my family, friends and everyone who helped me along the way, thank you! Your kind words and helping hands do not go unnoticed. I love you all so much! This year we are celebrating 85 years of Ogden Pioneer Days and I feel so blessed by the impact this rodeo and committee have had on my life. Special thank you to the Ogden Pioneer Days Foundation, Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo Committee, Miss Rodeo Utah Committee, contract personnel, sponsors, volunteers and of course the rodeo fans! YOU are what make this such an amazing experience and aid in keeping this western way of life alive. This is not a goodbye but rather a see you soon down the rodeo trail! As I continue my year as Miss Rodeo Utah and prepare for the Miss Rodeo America pageant in the bright lights of Las Vegas, I look forward to making more memories, meeting new people and promoting this great sport we call RODEO! With Love,
McKaylie Richins Miss Rodeo Utah 2019

McKinley Drake
Katelyn Marie Huffman 74
Name: McKinley Drake Age: 19 Hometown: St. George Parents: Chad and Natalie Drake Education: McKinley is a graduate of Deseret Hills High School and earned an associate of science degree from Dixie State University. She plans to continue her studies at Dixie State in the fall. Background: McKinley competed for four years in the cutting, break-away roping, pole bending, barrel racing and team roping events in the Utah High School Rodeo Association. She is a member of the Washington County Barrel Racing Association and a member of the Rocky Mountain Professional Rodeo Association. She will be applying for her Women’s Professional Rodeo Association permit soon to compete in break-away roping. When not in the saddle or watching her twin brothers at a rodeo, she enjoys playing soccer, swimming, going to the gym and reading. Why I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah: “The
year is 2006, and I am wearing my straw hat with a plastic tiara, a plain button-down shirt, Wranglers, brown Justin boots and my very first belt buckle. It’s a cool September night in St. George at my hometown rodeo, the Dixie Round-Up. After watching the rodeo queens, Miss Rodeo Utah in particular, I made a decision while walking to the concessions stand that would change my life forever. Little did I know that fateful September night would lead to a life full of hair spray, curling irons, studying, and a heart-full of memories. Miss Rodeo Utah exemplifies ever positive quality I strive to possess: grace, intelligence, kindness, poise and outstanding communication skills. She’s an example to all, an advocate for rodeo, agriculture, the western way of life and everything I believe in. I would be honored to represent my home state as Miss Rodeo Utah and share my love and passion for my state, my community and the sport of rodeo.”
Name: Katelyn Marie Huffman Age: 24 Hometown: Fort Duchesne Parents: Jake and Suzzanne Huffman Education: Katelyn is a graduate of Uintah High School and Utah State University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in animal dairy and veterinary science with an agriculture business and marketing minor. She’s currently seeking her master’s degree. Background: Throughout her life, Katelyn has enjoyed anything horse-related. Following her mother’s footsteps, she began competing in junior rodeos at the age of 5 and continued barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, and breakaway roping throughout high school and college. She also has tried her hand at hunter-jumpers, reining, western pleasure, and the thoroughbredracing industry. Outside of the arena, she enjoys photography, playing the violin, watching a good movie, and spending time with family. Why I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah: “Rodeo is more than just a sport. Rodeo is passion and perseverance, success, and failure. Rodeo is family, friends and a community. Rodeo is the only sport in which you
can compete individually, yet laugh, love and support each other as a team. Rodeo is a way of life. It is my way of life. Growing up, my sisters and I never knew any different. From the time we could sit up straight, we were on the back of a horse. The future of rodeo, agriculture, and the western lifestyle is dependent upon those who are able to act as a voice for the industry. Miss Rodeo Utah is one of those great individuals. She is able to represent the sport, and the great state of Utah, with beauty, grace, intelligence, and kindness. She is more than just a crown and a sash or rhinestones and cowboy boots. Miss Rodeo Utah represents the hard work and dedication found in every cowboy and cowgirl. I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah because I want to do whatever I can to help ensure the longevity of rodeo and the western lifestyle in an ever-changing world. As Miss Rodeo Utah, my goals would be to be a positive role model and a strong advocate for the sport of rodeo and the western way of life so that it may continue to thrive for many generations to come. It would be an honor to represent the beautiful state of Utah and its rodeo community as your Miss Rodeo Utah 2020.” Ogden Pioneer Days 2019

Bradie Jill Jones
Kassadee Jo Jones
Name: Bradie Jill Jones Age: 24 Hometown: Henefer Parents: Bryce and Cara Jones Education: Bradie is a graduate of North Summit High and has earned a Bachelor’s of Science in broadcast journalism with a minor in political science Background: When not working as a professional photographer or cinching up the saddle at a reining horse show, Bradie enjoys cinching up her well-worn hiking boots. She spends days summiting high Utah mountain peaks, exploring the endless sandstone of southern Utah, and cooking over a campfire. She and her adventurous friends have been known to finish 100-mile backpacking trips with 40-pound packs on their backs. She also plays softball and the piano and dedicates a lot of time training for a yearly triathlon. Why I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah: “As the golden sunlight of a drawn-out summer day begins to fall and fade behind the high mountains surrounding my home, the soft
roar of a hometown crowd can be heard coming from the little buckaroo rodeo area just across a sprawling pasture behind my house. It’s a sound and feeling I’ve known my entire life. Raised to appreciate my deep ranching roots and western upbringing, some of my earliest memories are of hot summer evenings spent in the shadow of Ben Lomond Peak as the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo rocked the red dirt, keeping the traditions of the American west alive, one night at a time. If it weren’t for rodeos, cowboys and cowgirls, I am afraid that the deep and rich traditions that the west was founded on would cease to exist. I am running for Miss Rodeo Utah because I want to help spur the great traditions of our American life forward into a future that honors our past and prepares for our future. Whether it’s at a tiny fair and rodeo, on a local news station, or amongst a group of elementary students, Utah, rodeo and the Great American West have my heart and voice for life.”
Name: Kassadee Jo Jones Age: 20 Hometown: Lehi Parents: Darin and Kelli Jo Jones Education: Kassadee is a graduate of Lehi High School. In 2017, she completed the Mountainland Technical College’s nail technician program. She also has attended Utah Valley University. Background: Kassadee Jo loves teaching traditional western swing dance to friends and family. She also enjoys being outdoors, riding horses, and hiking in the mountains. Kassadee spends spring and summer afternoons growing and harvesting tomatoes so she can make homemade salsa. As an amateur photographer, she loves capturing the moments in life that make people happy. Kassadee also has been a flag girl at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo for the past two years. Why I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah: “There are more than 30 state rodeo queen titles and over 5,000 titles in America. With that statistic in mind, the question is posed: ‘What makes Miss
Rodeo Utah so special?’ The reason I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah is to showcase the communities across Utah and the nation the difference one person can make. Utah’s nickname is the Beehive State and this is perhaps the best description of what sets it apart. It signifies the hard work and unity of its citizens. Utah is a people state that focuses on strengthening the relationship and harmony of all who reside within its borders. Rodeo is a sport that unites people and communities by building traditions and celebrating our western way of life. I want to follow in the footsteps of former Miss Rodeo Utahs who have continually built upon the tradition of rodeo and demonstrated to everyone the difference one person can make. No matter how many arenas I may ride in or how many little girls ask for my autograph, I hope that I will always be able to showcase that rodeo is more than just a sport. It is a tradition, and that above all, people matter, which is what Miss Rodeo Utah truly exemplifies.”

Jerrica James
Name: Jerrica James Age: 21 Hometown: Mendon Parents: Martin and Leslie James Education: Jerrica is a graduate of Mountain Crest High School and is seeking a degree in communication from Utah Valley University. Background: Jerrica is a dancer with the Utah Valley University Ballroom Dance Company. When not on the dance floor, she enjoys camping, hunting, shooting archery competitively, fishing, sewing with her grandmother and, of course, riding horses. Why I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah: “Some little boys never grow out of playing in the mud. Some little girls never quit dreaming of having horses and playing with glitter. As a little girl, I remember thinking that rodeo queens had their life made. After all, rodeo queens were able to spend their days wearing sparkly outfits and riding horses. What could be better? As I grew up, I found that the crown carried a lot more responsibilities than I previously thought. I watched as those who held the title of Miss Rodeo Utah before me had been able to touch the hearts of younger genera-
tions. They represented the sport of rodeo with grace and dignity. I have learned that holding the title is no easy task. Just like the cowboys who put in hours of practice and hard work outside of the arena, the job of Miss Rodeo Utah is no different. Hours are spent studying the health and science of the horses, ensuring their animals are kept healthy and safe. Knowing the top cowboys and cowgirls in the sport they love. Hours of service to her community. As Miss Rodeo Utah, I would love the opportunity to continue to serve my community and serve as a role model to all that I come in contact with. I would hope to teach others that some of the best things in life require hard work and are not always easy but are certainly worth the wait. I would share my love for the western way of life and this beautiful state of Utah, where I have had the great opportunity to grow up in. I would hope to inspire the next generation of cowboys and cowgirls to learn to chase after their dreams. I would hope to teach them that, in the words of Henry David Thoreau, ‘What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.’”

Why I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah: “All of my life I have grown up admiring the women who have worn the Miss Rodeo Utah crown. When I was a little girl, Miss
Rodeo Utah placed her crown on my head when I was attending the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo. From that day, I knew I wanted to be just like her: an ambassador of rodeo, a woman who embraces the western way of life and holds strong to the values of being a good role model for the younger generation. These are qualities I have always tried to uphold. As I have been an ambassador of the sport of rodeo, I have met a lot of good people in this family of rodeo who have inspired in me the passion for this great sport and our heritage of the western way of life. Autumn Rae Patterson
Name: Autumn Rae Patterson Age: 21 Hometown: Taylorsville Parents: Les Patterson and Heather McFadden Education: Autumn graduated from the Intineris Early College High School and graduated in May from Westminster College with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. Background: Autumn is an outdoors enthusiast who participates in a wide range of sports and activities. She enjoys trap shooting, swimming, scuba diving, traveling, snowboarding and dancing. Her greatest passion involves anything to do with horses and horse competitions: Barrel racing, AQHA and APHA showing, reining, and especially rodeo. Why I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah: “Horses were the first love of my life and they still are. Horses taught me that ‘hard work beats talent when talent does not work.’ Through my passion for horses I found all the things I love about life: my faith, 4-H, rodeo, agriculture, our western heritage, and lifestyle and the value of
family; both the family you have and the one you make with those who share your passions. My love of rodeo began a tradition for my family every year right before Christmas — the tradition of traveling to Las Vegas for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and Cowboy Christmas. I have learned that this tradition is only possible because of the amazing rodeo committees across the country who provide an incredible experience for not only the rodeo professional but the community. The Ogden Pioneer Days rodeo and its committee is no exception. I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah so I can serve the amazing state of Utah and all the rodeo committees across this great state during the rodeo season and throughout the year. I want to share the traditions and lifestyle that I love so much by connecting with our youth through various public engagements, service projects, and activities. My dream is to fulfill the responsibilities of Miss Rodeo Utah with grace, professionalism and dedication while promoting the sport of rodeo. It would be my honor and privilege to be chosen as the 2020 Miss Rodeo Utah.”

Background: Taylor enjoys working out, dancing, hiking, singing, hunting and fishing. When not at the gym or on her horses, she goes to the Union Station on Wednesday nights for swing dancing. She also donates her time making blankets for hospitals for sick children. Why I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah: “When you think of Miss Rodeo Utah, what
do you see? I see a beautiful lady that can ride a horse and talk on important topics as she needs. Miss Rodeo Utah is a lady I have looked up to since I was a little girl. I loved seeing her at Ogden Pioneer Days, and then watching the next girl be crowned in front of a sold-out crowd. I used to see Miss Rodeo Utah as a dream come true, but I have learned it is more than that. It is hard work, discipline, grit, honesty, and true beauty — inside and out. The ladies who have come before having paved a path I would love to follow. Miss Rodeo Utah has many jobs and one is to bring people in and teach people young and old about the western way of life and agriculture.”

Jayna Scadden
Janessa Sullivan
Name: Jayna Scadden Age: 24 Hometown: Farmington Parents: Douglas and Jannett Scadden Education: Jayna is a graduate of Viewmont High School, attended LDS Business College, and is a student at Weber State University. Background: Jayna participates in a variety of equestrian events, including team sorting, roping, pole bending, and wild cow milking. When not in the arena, she enjoys the thrill of roller coasters, water parks, and reality escape rooms, and hiking at national and state parks. She is in training for the National Aerialympics where she will compete in doubles and singles Lyra Hoop acrobatics. She also loves event planning, and playing the piano and card games with her family. Why I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah: “When I look at Miss Rodeo Utah I don’t just see a polished queen in Wrangler jeans. I see a woman who commands a room, speaks from her heart, stands for what is right, and lives a life worth emulating. Being a rodeo queen is far more than
smiling for cameras and waving in parades. The buckles will tarnish, the sashes will fade, but the impact a queen makes can last forever. Most people will forget what we do in life, but they will never forget how we make them feel. It is the feelings instilled in me from cowboys, cowgirls and one very special horse that have inspired me to chase my dreams of becoming Miss Rodeo Utah. If the only prize give to Miss Rodeo Utah was the opportunity to get mud on her boots by serving the rodeo community, I would still be here. I am here to give all the glory to God and those hardworking individuals who make the sport of rodeo happen. As Miss Rodeo Utah, I would be the face of rodeo but I know that the heart of rodeo is the people and animals who make it possible, be it the legends of yesterday, the stars of today, the hopefuls of tomorrow, and our faithful fans. It would be an honor to represent the city, sport and people I love. I am here to kick up some dust representing the timeless traditions of rodeo and to be the kind of person you would be proud to call your 2020 Miss Rodeo Utah.”
Name: Jenessa Sullivan Age: 218 Hometown: Lehi Parents: Mark and Pamela Sullivan Education: Jenessa is a graduate of Skyridge High School and plans to attend Utah Valley University in the fall. Background: Jenessa’s life has always revolved around her horses. She’s participated in the 4-H horse program, as well as the Utah High School Rodeo Association. She’s competed in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying and the reining cowhorse. Why I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah: “When asked the question, ‘Why do I want to be Miss Rodeo Utah?’ the first thing that comes to mind is service. More specifically, serving others at rodeos, appearances and events and serving our great state of Utah. One person that comes to mind is McKenna Hales, Miss Rodeo Utah 2017. Her rein was filled with service by spreading awareness for breast cancer.
With her as an example, I would like to serve by sharing my love of horses with kids. Not just ordinary kids but special-need kids. I’ve had the opportunity to teach an amazing individual with autism how to ride horses over the past three years. I did not get paid for the time I gave teaching him how to ride but the lessons I learned are worth more money could buy. On the flip side of things, service is not always giving of yourself. One thing I’ve learned as being a representative and ambassador of rodeo is the impact that other people have on me. Sometimes, the service of a simple smile will affect me in my day. I will always believe that service is a two-way street. It comes and goes just like karma. In a world like ours today, serving others and putting your positive thoughts, actions, and feelings into the lives of others will benefit you more than you’ll ever know. As seen by the past and current Miss Rodeo Utahs, being willing to give of yourself to others.”
