My favorite group of people on campus is the freshmen girls on Pell. On Pell there is never a dull moment as there is constant a cappella singing, games, and dance parties. These girls have never failed to make me smile and have made my senior year at St. Andrew’s unforgettable. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: At the end of my junior year we decided to have a form function on Rodney Point with pizza, spike ball, volleyball, swimming, and tons of other activities. Towards the end of the function we made a huge bonfire and our entire class sat around the bonfire sharing favorite memories, what we loved about our class, and what we hoped to be as a senior class. The memory of sitting around the fire with my classmates singing songs and sharing stories will always remind me of how much I love St. Andrew’s and my family here. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Take advantage of the woods! On the weekends grab a group of friends and explore the trails, climb some trees, or make a fort. Go out on a rainy day, in a snow storm, and on a perfect sunny day and see how the woods change from season to season. You won’t regret it. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY:

Cross-country has been the most impactful team that I’ve been on. While I’ve seen more success in swimming and rowing, I credit that success to lessons that I learned during my first cross-country season my sophomore year. Running was something that I was nervous would be too difficult for me, and learning how to run long distances is an incredibly unpleasant activity at first. With the guidance of my teammates and coaches, I decided to stick with it and keep doing my best. Slowly, my body and mind learned to cooperate, and since then, endurance sports have had a huge impact on my life and my outlook. Endurance sports teach us to bite down, work hard, and persist through pain. I will be rowing in college, but what I’ve learned from cross-country will keep me working hard and leaning in to discomfort. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: The cornfield that wraps around campus. One of my favorite activities has been stargazing in the solitude of the fields to clear my mind, reflect, and ponder, all while sharing the stunning night sky with a friend or two. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: I hope that I never get comfortable for too long. I hope that I find a job that I enjoy, but that challenges me daily. I also aspire to keep improving and continue working to be the best version of myself that I can be. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY:

Charlottesville, VA The Envi Sci camping trip. We got to see areas of the country where our nation was shaped during the Civil War. Getting to see all of that beautiful nature and learn its powerful history really changed my perspective on how we view our natural world. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: Boys lacrosse. The community that we build and the experiences and changes we go through as a team are amazing. It is very cool to have seen players on the team grow into roles of leadership and really become key components of the team. COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: This year I became one of the co-heads of mentoring. It is amazing to see how many people we have going out into our community to mentor every Wednesday. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Spring Fling. We get to make the most of our iconic Front Lawn on a beautiful spring day, and get outside with all of our closest friends. RECALL IN A DECADE: The community here will stick with me. I don’t think a group of people like this can be found anywhere else. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Fun, challenging, transformative. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: To live a happy life. Possibly in a van. HOMETOWN:

The swim team! I love this team—it’s a family that has stuck together. Despite having new coaches each season, the spirit of the team lives on. RECALL IN A DECADE: The last night of each school year that our entire grade spends together, and our morning walk to Starbucks that follows the sunrise. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Do your work the night before Free Days and take time to get to know the cornfields! FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY:

My favorite team was definitely the crew team. The girls are some of my favorite on campus and were always so incredibly fun and supportive! ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: It’s okay to take a break! If you’re exhausted, take a nap and don’t go to a meeting. It’s totally fine to just focus on yourself and make sure you are in the best place to be your best self. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: I’m really interested in a neuroscience major. Long term, I hope to either end up in a MD program or go on to do more research. I also want to live abroad at some point in my life! FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY:

My very first Square Dance freshman year. On Opening Day, all the girls on Pell played ice breakers, which felt forced and uncomfortable. But after that, we went back to our rooms to get ready for the Square Dance, and I experienced the genuine excitement of living on dorm with my future friends. We were in a frenzy trying to figure out what to wear, and this allowed us to connect in a completely natural way. At the dance, I was greeted with similarly authentic connections and sincere excitement. I felt welcomed and loved. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Play 4 Square. Go to the plays, showcases, sports games, and every other opportunity to support your peers. Listen intently and genuinely. Share authentically and truthfully. Take time for yourself. Canoe in the pond. Take notes of your year, or journal—it is so easy to forget so many wonderful moments. Take advantage of all of the incredible opportunities here. Put away your phone. Explore the woods. Put yourself out there, reach out to new people, and make new friends. Get to know more faculty. Play a sport and try your hardest even if you are not the best at it. Play paddle tennis on a Saturday night. Play Paranoia on the T-Dock, Scrabble in the library, and poker in the Admissions Common Room. Advocate for change, in St. Andrew’s or the world. Love and appreciate your friends. Love and appreciate this place and how amazing it is. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: I hope that I will always be able to call St. Andrew’s home. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE:

Austin Mark Brannan HOMETOWN:

The T-Dock will always have a special place in my heart. RECALL IN A DECADE: The people at St. Andrew’s School are everything. You learn from them, you live with them, you cry with them, and you heal with them. You grow alongside each other and ultimately watch every individual change for the better. This extraordinary space has given me the opportunity to build eternal, unbreakable, and true friendships. Therefore, I have no doubt that these people will be a part of my life forever. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: This is home. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Tell your story, open up, and listen to the stories around you. Also, dance in your dorm room by yourself every once in a while. It’s oddly liberating. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE:

My favorite place is the T-Dock. It has always allowed me to think, meditate, and find my inner peace, often after a busy and stressful day. RECALL IN A DECADE: I have learned that the people who I surrounded myself with here have been instrumental to my growth as a scholar, activist, and human being. Ultimately the wide array of experiences and stories that others have offered to me have helped and continue to help me in my own search for an identity. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone to find the things that will make you happy. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE:

Charleston, SC I was a member of the football team that won back the Cannon in the fall of 2018. RECALL IN A DECADE: I think the friendships will definitely stick with me. I may not remember how to find the sum of a series or every Spanish conjugation, but I will always remember latenight Wawa runs, conversations with room- and dorm-mates, and many other small moments that combined to form the strong bonds I share with my friends today. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Take advantage of the resources all around you, particularly the faculty. They can teach you so much about life outside of the classroom, and they are always more than willing to talk. HOMETOWN:

The boys cross-country team. Each member of the team had a great relationship with one another, which was what fueled our success. Being so close with my teammates inspired me to work hard for them and for the rest of the team, as opposed to working simply for myself. Because of this, this year we were able to become the fastest SAS team of all time, and one of the fastest Delaware has ever seen. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite SAS memory occurred right before Spring Break, when I moved my bed into a triple on Schmolze. I did this along with two other friends, turning the triple into a tight sextuple. Although it was only for a few nights, they were the nights that I will miss most when I leave St. Andrew’s. RECALL IN A DECADE: The ability to have a good conversation with anyone, at any time. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY:

Sarah Elizabeth Caron HOMETOWN:

The swim team. Our team is such a supportive community and the people in my lane are some of my best friends—although all of the teams that I have been a part of have been so much fun. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: One of my favorite St. Andrew’s memories would be my freshman year prom. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Don’t be scared to go and talk to new people. Freshman year I was so scared to interact with my class that I closed myself off from getting to know everyone. Looking back, I wish that I had just gone and introduced myself to more people during the first few weeks that I was here. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY:

Newark, NJ When the boys varsity basketball team played Newark Charter at home this year, I never felt anything more lively than the crowd at that game. It was an amazing atmosphere and at the end we got the W. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: The Carol Shout, because all hell breaks loose when screaming Christmas carols at the top of my lungs. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Sleep is underrated. Don’t be afraid to be quirky. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: I want to give back to my city and my extended family in Nigeria. HOMETOWN:

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE:

Enok Choe I lived in Seoul, South Korea for the first 11 years of my life, and since then I’ve been living near Englewood, NJ. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: The tennis team. I love that there is both a team and individual aspect to it. I love watching my teammates grow into future state champions, but I also love how all the responsibility for the outcomes of my matches is on me, and no one else. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Sitting on the balcony right outside the quad in Hillier (with faculty permission :)) with Gus Richards during freshman year, looking at the stars over Noxontown Pond, listening to calm music under the moon, and planning all the things we would do by our senior year. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: 1. You can learn something new from every person in this community, and often from those you never expect to learn something from. So go talk to that person that you’ve never talked to before; you will not regret it. 2. YOU have to take the initiative—whether socially or academically—instead of waiting for others to take it for you. You will be surprised to see how much you get out of that little initiative you take. 3. You should always listen and be openminded to perspectives that may appear contradictory to yours. That one person that disagrees with you all the time may actually be completely right. 4. Enjoy, soak in, and cherish every moment you have here. Truly, there is no place like it. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: My ultimate goal is to help as many underprivileged and impoverished people as I can in my lifetime. HOMETOWN:

Althea Caledonia Clarke Easton, MD Everything that SAS has forced me to undergo has made me grow into someone I am proud to be. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: Noxontones and Andrean Ensemble have been extremely important to me in my time at SAS. I hope these groups continue to advance and inspire young singers to embrace their voices and grow comfortable with performing, as they have for me. COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: The founding of the Atheist Affinity Group is my proudest accomplishment. I hope that this group continues to provide a safe space for atheists in and out of Chapel. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: O’Brien Arts Center RECALL IN A DECADE: MY PEOPLE! I have made friendships that I am sure will last my whole lifetime. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Exhausting, engaging, loving. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Only do things that make you happy, or that will make you happy in the future. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: I hope to find a career that leaves me fulfilled and happy, either in social justice or music. HOMETOWN:

Thomas Wilkinson Key Cunningham Charlottesville, VA Playing on the football team during my time at St. Andrew’s. I not only learned to be a team player and work harder than I ever have before, but I was also able to establish myself as a leader and a motivator. I weigh 150 pounds, and no one ever believed me when I told them I played center on the football team. For me, playing football wasn’t about my size or the successes we both had and didn’t have throughout the season, but was more about working and committing to something bigger than myself. The people on the squash team this year made me love the sport. It really embodied that sense of the close-knit community that we aim to create at St. Andrew’s. Also, I have never laughed the amount I did during this squash season. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: I love the Frosty Run because it’s at the start of the year, and it really helps induct me back into the craziness that I love and that surrounds St. Andrew’s. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Fun, exciting, ethos. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY:

Elizabeth Stewart Egan

AKA

Lilly

Winston-Salem, NC This fall in afternoon dance, we did an activity where we were given a piece of paper and had to draw a line that represented our life so far. Then we all sat in a circle and shared our “lifelines” with each other. We listened and supported each other and this brought us all closer together in a powerful way. I realized that every person here has their own unique and important story. We then used these lifelines to develop choreography and performed these pieces at Parents Weekend. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: The Andrean Ensemble. I have always loved to sing, and this group has given me a great opportunity to grow as a singer and musician. We’ve sung not only in Chapel and in Engelhard, but also in places like Philadelphia and D.C., and we even went on a choir tour to Bermuda my junior year. The Andrean Ensemble has become like a family to me, and I have made some of my best friends and my best memories from it. RECALL IN A DECADE: When I arrived at St. Andrew’s as a new sophomore I was much more shy and much less confident than I am now. From talking to people I don’t know well to singing solos on stage, I have learned how to push through nervousness and put myself out there. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Take every opportunity that you have here, because SAS is truly a one of a kind place. The best parts of my SAS career have come from taking advantage of the special moments, large and small, that we are presented with every day. HOMETOWN:

The varsity volleyball team. This team has been everything to me. I know you will make that state tournament soon. COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: This fall, SAS held its very first Model UN conference—something I have been working hard to make happen since my freshman year. Model UN is valuable to me because it requires you to reach compromise with people whose ideas and goals differ from yours, and challenges you to think beyond your own rationale to understand global conflicts. The conference went incredibly well, with 150 students from local schools participating, and is set to be an annual event. I am proud of starting something powerful that will continue to exist at SAS. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Always choose great late night ideas over sleep. Ask Mr. Kunen what double brackets are and why they are important. Spend time exploring the woods. Put down your phone. Take Ms. Pressman’s class. Have conversations that are challenging and make you feel vulnerable. Find out how funny Mr. O’Connell is. Try everything that seems interesting. Talk to that upperclassman that scares you. But most of all—buy into all of it. Love this place and love it hard. Spend all the time you can with the people that make this the incredible place that it is. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: I want to be happy. I want to have a family. I want my life to mean something and make a difference to someone somewhere. But if I HAVE TO be specific, I want to be a diplomat. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY:

Henry Robert Fitzpatrick Esterson HOMETOWN:

My favorite St. Andrew’s tradition is by far the Carol Shout. The combination of screaming Christmas carols, remembering lost classmates, breaking Dining Hall tables, and class pride is wild in the best way and couldn’t happen anywhere else. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: My second home. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Make connections with as many of the adults in the community as you can, whenever you can. Cole Davidge Raven Glowa Ferguson Chestertown, MD The first “Tad Talk” that I ever heard my freshman year inspired me so much that I knew that this was the right place for me for the next four years. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: This year’s boys lacrosse team has been the greatest St. Andrew’s team that I have ever been a part of. COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: At the beginning of this year, I went with a group of seniors to assist in the renovations of the Veterans Rehabilitation House in Middletown. This project was not my idea, but I took part in doing something that I knew would help benefit the community for the better. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: The Frosty Run. How could anything else top that? RECALL IN A DECADE: In the winter of my junior year I was lost and had no idea what to do for an afternoon activity. I chose wrestling, thinking I would hate it and quit, but I stayed on the team for two years. St. Andrew’s wrestling gave me so many valuable lessons and taught me so much about myself. I will never forget what that program did for me. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Challenging, fun, interactive. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Go outside. There’s so much to explore in the SAS woods and in Middletown. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: Anything that allows me to work outside. HOMETOWN:

Driving back onto campus for the first time after a break and practically jumping out of a moving car so I can hug the people I love. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Like nothing else. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Order a Vanilla Frozen Chai Tea from Wawa. Say hi to everyone in the hallways. Get lost in the woods. Stay up late talking to your favorite faculty member or senior on duty. Ask Mrs. Roach to bake cookies for you. Don’t be afraid to advocate for change. Have a conversation with someone totally random. Do whatever it takes to grow into the person you want to become. Love every minute you have in this place. Graduation will be here before you know it. Seeing and listening to someone who has had such an impact on our country and our criminal justice system was so inspiring and powerful. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: The football team. I have gone through so much with that team. We started out 0-9 my freshman year and then won the Cannon my senior year—that made it perfect. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Carol Shout—there is nothing like screaming Christmas songs in the Dining Hall in an ugly Christmas sweater! RECALL IN A DECADE: I have learned that everyone has something to offer, and that the effort and good you put out into the world will always come back to you. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Community, exciting, loving. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Buy into the community and get involved! Theatre. I’ve done the winter play for the past three years and the fall play for the past two. I love performing on stage. I’m generally a more reserved person, so I get a lot of gratification from the opportunity to share a part of myself with the wider community. Being part of a cast is also a great bonding experience. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: The last night of school junior year, after the seniors had left, all of us on L Dorm stayed up all night watching movies, doing face masks, and talking. I’d never felt more connected to a community. It was the best note to end the year on. I’ll always remember L dorm 2018. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Don’t let your fear of what other people might think of you hold you back. This is advice that I’m still working on following, and I wish I had heard it sooner. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY:

FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: Ceramics is my favourite class because there is no way to avoid failure. The number of times I completely messed up has taken some of the fear out of failure. All those failed bowls later, and here I am, graduating! COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: Junior year I was a part of the Attitude of Gratitude initiative. We set up a station in the library to encourage students and faculty to write thank you notes to one another and spread kindness. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: It has to be the time I moved my brother’s bedroom furniture onto the T-Dock. His birthday is on April Fool’s Day, so there was no way that I was going to be missing that opportunity. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Don’t take life too seriously—dress up like Mr. Roach for Halloween, fill the Dining Hall with balloons, jump in the pond fully dressed while it’s snowing outside—the possibilities are endless. Also, please make sure that your birthday announcements are loud, short and funny—I promise people will really appreciate it. Nadia Isabella Holcomb Owensboro, KY One time I found a sick carpenter bee. She was really cute and we became best friends. Sometimes she’d fall asleep on my nose. I miss her dearly. I nursed her back to health and had to let her go, but I know she misses me too. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: Winter was always my favourite time of the year because I got to take part in Forestry and Wildlife as my afternoon activity with Dr. McLean. We documented the state and findings of almost 50 bluebird boxes scattered throughout campus. After the sun set, we’d drink delicious hot chocolate and chat a bit about anything and everything. Dr. McLean has been and will always be an inspiration and a role model. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: I will live in a small cottage in the mountains of Taiwan studying insects and caring for my herd of goats. In the mornings, I’ll row to the middle of a quiet, still, foggy lake to eat bread and watch the sun rise. I’ll learn to play the harp and the banjo and the dulcimer and my goats will crowd around to listen every night. My soulmate will live with me and we’ll have our own band, playing in the local venues and pubs every week. All in all, my life will be very content, very small, and very still. HOMETOWN:

Diana Michelle Honey Park City, UT After working with Sofia, an elementary school swimmer with developmental challenges, in Adapted Aquatics for two years, she was finally able to swim without a life vest or belt. I feel a very strong connection with Sofia despite her struggles with communication, and seeing her progress from being so afraid of the water that she would not enter the pool, to swimming happily on her own, literally brought tears to my eyes. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: I was coming out of the Hampton Inn the night before Move-In Day my sophomore year, and passed Lilly Egan, my future roommate, who I had never met before. She recognized me from a picture I had sent her over the summer, and called out my name. We talked for a bit, and have been best friends ever since. RECALL IN A DECADE: During the Diversity Chapel open mic, Bilal Morsi opened up with huge vulnerability. He shared his story and made a true impact on everyone in the SAS community. Afterward, Mr. Sanchez took us on a late-night run to Wawa, and we laughed and joked the entire way there and back. What will stick with me most about this night, and this community, is the way we are taught by our peers and teachers that being true to ourselves is always encouraged and valued. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: Some of my many aspirations and hopes are to run a marathon, teach English in China, backpack Europe with Pia Mozdzanowski ’19, participate in cognitive theory or behavioral science research, and visit the communities in the mountains of Taiwan. Soccer—I loved being a part of that team. Thanks to past players, Carroll, Hutch, Foehl, Permutt, and all the underclassmen. Thanks for being my family and best friends. Thank you for more than I can describe. It’s hard to put into words what the team means to me, but it has given me so much that I will never forget. Good luck. Cristle Chidera Ike Willingboro, NJ As a junior, I gave an announcement with Bwembya Tembo ’20 about African stereotypes and what we can do to get rid of negative generalizations of Africa. The community received this message with open minds and asked so many questions in order to further understand our perspective. With that encouraging reception, I felt as if we had made an impact and changed many people’s views on African countries. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: Though I loved the teamwork, encouragement, and positivity of the volleyball team (love you guys) and the amazing and incredibly fun dynamic of the winter musical (love you guys too), my Acting 1 class has a special place in my heart. From opening up during circle time, to strutting like cowboys to learn how to adopt different physical characteristics, acting class always made my day and I am forever grateful for the friendships and connections I made in it. RECALL IN A DECADE: One thing that will stick with me is to be bold! To try new clubs and classes, talk to those people I’ve never spoken with before and make new friends, or make that School Meeting announcement! Before SAS I was never one to even dare to speak in public or talk to people I don’t know, but SAS has helped shape me into a bolder and braver person. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: At UPenn and even beyond, I really want to continue to pursue my love for theatre and diversity work, while also going for a premed major. Livingston Manor, NY A powerful experience I had at SAS was during an English exhibition with my classmate Charlie Cahill. Mrs. Roach continuously challenged our readings of the text, and it was so amazing, exciting, and empowering to work off each other’s ideas to reach a new conclusion about the novel. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: The football team my junior year. We were coming off back-to-back seasons without a victory and that team fought through the most adversity to get to a win. Win or lose, I was willing to give my entire heart for all of my brothers out there. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: One of my favorite memories is from the Envi Sci trip this year, when Nnamdi Chima-Anyanka and I capsized our canoe on Antietam Creek. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: I love taking a walk in the woods on Sunday afternoons with my friends. Usually, we take out Nala, Mr. Rehrig’s dog, but any faculty pet will make us happy. We also like to go when it’s snowing because the fields and the trees in the woods look beautiful. It makes me appreciate nature a lot. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: You’ll probably hear this a lot, but my advice would be: enjoy and appreciate your friends and all the good times at St. Andrew’s. Reston, VA and Seoul, South Korea A powerful experience I’ve had at St. Andrew’s has been serving as an RL on freshmen boys dorm. The position has helped me shape who I am as a leader and develop confidence in my ability to organize, console, and keep order. It has been a powerful experience to help build the culture of Fleming into one of kindness and respect in conjunction with my team of seniors and my freshmen boys. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: Cross-country. I have never been on such a close and connected team, and I’ve also developed what I think is a life-long love of running. RECALL IN A DECADE: For the rest of my life, I’ll recall how to speak and engage with others. Whether around a dinner table with peers or speaking to parents at crew regattas, during my time at St. Andrew’s, I’ve honed my ability to talk to people, and out of these conversations, to develop genuine connections. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Organize! I now find it comforting to organize my desk, my calendar, and to prioritize my homework assignments. Using a calendar to organize my work and using my free time wisely have gotten me through the academic rigor of St. Andrew’s. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: First, I aspire to find a specific field or profession to which I am willing to devote my life. Their kindness represents the support and care within the St. Andrew’s community. They could have just enjoyed the game, but they remembered me and helped me stay connected to my team. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: Soccer—it’s been an incredible privilege to be able to share the same field with this group of friends. This team is a special one. And Orchestra— Mr. Geiersbach has been an incredible conductor. It’s inspiring to see the musical development of others from the moment they decide to begin a new instrument to their final concert. Nicole Lopez Queens, NY My AS Calc AB class has been a significantly impactful experience this year. I’ve always had a strong disliking of math, and the start of senior year was no different. I dreaded walking into class, and at first my only interaction with my teacher, Mr. Olana, was in argument. I don’t know when it happened, or how, but suddenly I found myself enjoying class, being curious about the material we were learning, and actually kind of laughing at my teacher’s dad jokes. I have to give Mr. Olana all the credit. Without words, he let me know that he was on my team and invested in my growth as a math student and as a person. He’s also made me realize that I can be kinda good at math if I try. That’s big. #liveloveDeriba FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Playing Four Square on the Front Lawn. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Weird, nurturing, authentic. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: This is the start of the best years of your life. Make memories. RECALL IN A DECADE: The desire I have to control my own learning, and supplement my learning if I feel unsatisfied with what I do in the classroom, is something I will take with me wherever I go. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Mess up early so you won’t make those mistakes late in the game. Also, be comfortable with asking for help from teachers and counselors, and tell the truth. The Carol Shout. Having the entire school together in the Dining Hall, sweating uncontrollably, wearing intense holiday clothing, and screaming like their lives depend on it, is an experience I have yet to witness anywhere else. There is unique energy filling the room, for this evening marks the night before Winter Break, creating an infectious excitement that cannot be found anywhere else. Each student is prepared to laugh, dance, and be unapologetically themselves. RECALL IN A DECADE: Being mentally tough. St. Andreans do a lot, everyday single day, and sometimes that can be superoverwhelming. But looking back, pushing myself through challenging moments and learning how to be mentally tough in every aspect of my life has allowed me to grow in ways I never deemed possible. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Talk to every faculty member you can. You will never have another opportunity in your life where the most amazing, curious, excited, and passionate adults will be at your disposal, so take advantage of every moment you have with them. Even if they do not teach you, live on dorm with you, or coach a sport you play, interacting with members of both the faculty and staff will teach you so much about yourself and the world we are living in. The crew team. The culture inherent to our sport is a powerful one. As Coach Porter put it early this season, “There’s a reason all other sports look to rowing as a metaphor for teamwork.” Our team really relies on its seniors to model that teamwork. And after races, when we go across Noxontown Pond to shake hands with all the visiting crews—I think that really exemplifies what it means to be a St. Andrean, especially considering how fierce the competition was on the water just minutes ago. The sport teaches you how to be a good person. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Some of my favorite memories are late-night talks or projects with my roommates. The many times we reorganized the Penthouse this year, like building the infamous Quad Bunk. Or eating spicy ramen and untoasted bagels in the Sherwood quad. Part of that was just the hunt for the bagels themselves. Dorm life in general leads to good memories. RECALL IN A DECADE: Definitely all the relationships I’ve developed over my years here. First, my friends. My roommates are all a bunch of guys I’m not going to forget, and I have just as strong of a relationship with all my other friends. I know I’m gonna keep up with the best of you. Second, my advisor: Hutch. He’s taught me a lot, like what it means to man up and take responsibility for mistakes. I loved being on the girls lacrosse team. From the first moment of my freshman year season, my teammates and coaches introduced me to an environment that could be both competitive and supportive. COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: I had the opportunity to be one of the co-founders of one of St. Andrew’s many service opportunities. We started a student group that goes to the nearby MOT Senior Center each week to connect with its clients. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: The Square Dance on Opening Day. This dance allows everyone to let go of their nerves and to have fun, even though we don’t all know each other yet. RECALL IN A DECADE: From my time at St. Andrew’s, I will always understand and know the importance of being outside. Many of my best memories from the last four years took place on the Front Lawn or in the woods. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: I would tell the underclassmen to take advantage of and embrace even the smallest moments here. One of my favorite classes was Religion & Philosophy with Mr. Kunen. It was a new experience to analyze and critique something so complex as religion. The class enabled me to think freely and participate in immersive conversations with my classmates. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Spring Fling, without question. It is a time for the entire student body to go outside and welcome spring by jumping into Noxontown Pond, listening to music on the Front Lawn, and spending quality time with friends. By the end of the day, everyone is tuckered out and slightly sunburnt, but so content and happy. RECALL IN A DECADE: Coming in as a new sophomore, I have firsthand experience of what it’s like to be in a new environment full of people who already know each other. No matter where you are, that is an uncomfortable situation to be in. The moments that I most remember were when people went out of their way to introduce me into the community, and I hope to always be there for anyone in need of a friendly face. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Of the many lessons that I have learned here, one of the most important is to say “yes” to more experiences and opportunities. I’ve learned this from faculty and friends alike. I have found I treasure the moments and memories that I nearly missed out on. Whether I chose to take a certain class at the last minute or decided to accompany my friends on an adventure instead of returning to dorm, I learned that the best moments come from when you reach out a little more. Bilal Morsi Brooklyn, NY Let me set the scene. Opening night of the musical Hello Dolly. I have the usual nervous jitters and fears of messing up, but unfortunately, I’m also exhausted. I’m running around stage, singing about whales—and BOOM. I open my eyes, and I’m in the orchestra pit. I’m trying to hoist myself up as Austin Brannan and Mr. Hoopes give me a lift. I exit the stage and start to cry, but instead of facing laughs or anger backstage, everyone in the cast tells me that they love and appreciate me. They hug and support me. They give me the courage to go back on stage. Because of them, my show will always go on. COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: When I started the Playwright Club, I genuinely thought it would fail because I didn’t think I could handle the pressure of planning rehearsal schedules and encouraging people to work harder. Eventually, I realized that I had built a little creative family where people could write and perform their stories. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My first ever open mic performance was a spoken word piece about my family and culture. I didn’t think I could do it, and I was so nervous I couldn’t stop fidgeting. However, in the uproar of appreciation after my performance, I remember realizing that this would be a place where I could be loved. RECALL IN A DECADE: I have learned to never change myself for other people. RECALL IN A DECADE: If I forget everything else, God let me remember my friends. They have defined my SAS experience, and all for the better. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Self-prioritize. There is nothing that will be more detrimental to your external ambitions than being too stressed or unhappy to accomplish them. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Staying up late hanging out and doing homework in the Moss common room during my senior year. The supportive nature of the team was our biggest strength both on and off the court. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite place on campus is without a doubt the Front Lawn. The Front Lawn is a great place to socialize, be active, and destress from the rigors of academic life at SAS. RECALL IN A DECADE: One thing I think will stick with me from my time at SAS is the knowledge that it’s okay to reach out for help when you are lost, stuck, or just don’t understand something. Arthur Findlay Potter New York City Two of my favorite memories both come from the football field. The first is our win against Red Lion Christian Academy junior year. It was the first win for St. Andrew’s football in over two years, and to win in front of the whole school under the lights was amazing. It was so cool to feel the love and support of everyone. The second was taking back the Cannon this year. To end my football career with a close win against our archrival was truly special. Again, it was so incredible to know that the whole school was behind us and seeing that mass of people who came directly from the cross-country meet to celebrate with us after the game was really heartwarming. Also, presenting that trophy to Mr. Roach was one of the greatest feelings of pride and achievement that I have ever experienced. The moments I will remember a decade from now are late-night conversations with my roommates, bus rides to the boys soccer state final, cooking dinners for semiformals, watching Dead Poets Society in front of the Garth, the joy of hearing those six magic words—”tomorrow will be a free day”—SAISL matches, and the like. I will remember the people and the experiences I had here for the rest of my life. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Sleep is the key to surviving St. Andrew’s. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: My long-term aspiration is to find a fulfilling line of work that does good in the world, and to continue to build deep and meaningful relationships. HOMETOWN:

My favorite club was probably the Anime Club. I really liked it simply because it gave me a platform to share my love for anime with other likeminded anime enthusiasts. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: My favorite SAS tradition is definitely the Square Dance in the first week of the school year. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Inquisitive, resilient, fun. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Please treasure the time you spend at SAS and the friends you’ve made here. Richmond, VA My two years living on junior dorms have been the best experiences I’ve had at SAS. My year on L Dorm was the most fun I’ve ever had, and being a senior on M Dorm has given me the opportunity to become best friends with so many underclassmen. I’m so grateful to have lived with these people—they truly made my experience the best it could be. RECALL IN A DECADE: What will stick with me most are the relationships I’ve formed with teachers, classmates, and all the people I’ve been so lucky to live with. These friendships and mentorships have had such an impact on my life, and I know I will have them forever. I am also so grateful for my advisor, Mrs. Roz. She has been such a steadfast source of love and support for all four of my years here, and I don’t know what I’ll do without her in college. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Spend time outside, take risks, and realize that your time at SAS is limited and that you need to soak up everything you can from this place and these people. POWERFUL EXPERIENCE:

Sylvia Meejin Reed Austin, TX I know that the friendships that I have made at St. Andrew’s will last me a lifetime. We all grew up together, made our own fun, and learned so much about ourselves and each other. There is no doubt in my mind that I will stay close with these people for many years. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Transformational, goofy, lovely. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Get outside and enjoy being a kid in this beautiful place! Bedminster, NJ A really powerful experience for me was during my junior year when I was playing in the finals of the state tennis tournament. It felt like the whole school was there to support me, and I would never have played as well as I did if I had not had that support. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: The squash team has meant so much to me over the last few years. There is no way to describe the friendships I have made through that team. RECALL IN A DECADE: Living with my peers has brought me so much closer to my friends than I ever thought it would. I will always remember my senior year dorm room and roommates in the years to come. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Exciting, engaging, unique. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Your time at SAS goes by faster than you think. Never be afraid to take chances, and spend time with your peers because before you know it you will be graduating. HOMETOWN:

POWERFUL EXPERIENCE:

Kathryn Bennett Rickert London, England The sense of welcome that I experienced when I first came here. Never in my life have I felt so embraced by a community. Although coming to SAS felt like a risk, without this community, I simply do not think I would be the confident and complex person I am today. COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: I helped to organize the Walkout Against Gun Violence my junior year with Sylvia Reed, Dede Rattray, and Frances Malley. We were extremely busy the week before attending meetings, promoting the event, organizing the bus ride to a Middletown gun debate, and working with the National School Walkout organization. Despite the insanity of the week, it was such a fulfilling and fun experience. We were simultaneously having an impact on our community and the world. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Be authentic and genuine. Let the little things go—time flies by really fast, and grudges are so unnecessary. Care about and get to know everyone you’re surrounded by, and be vulnerable with them. Don’t stretch yourself a mile wide to only go an inch deep; find the things you love and engage in them fully. Talk to your teachers and ask them for life advice. Laugh at every opportunity possible. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: To create an impact on the world; to the leave the world better than I found it. I would love to start a non-profit organization of some kind. HOMETOWN:

When the soccer team lost in penalty kicks at the state tournament this year. In this moment, I realized that this was my final game as a Saint. We were all very emotional, and the way we picked each other up, hugged one another, and were together in this moment made me realize that what we had as a team was bigger than soccer. COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: Helping with Special Olympics has been a pretty cool experience and has given me a new perspective on life. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: The Carol Shout. It’s so much fun to be in the center of the crowd screaming at the underclassmen. On top of that, when Mr. Roach and a teacher do their solos, I love how everyone goes crazy. Unique traditions like this are what make SAS so special for me. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Challenging, fun, unique. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: My one piece of advice would be to never take time for granted, and in every aspect of school life, I would say go for it. In athletics, you might feel like you have so much time to win the state tournament or whatever your goal is, but, if you want to achieve something, go for it now. LONG-TERM HOPES & ASPIRATIONS: I hope to someday be my own boss. But for now, I am looking toward college and I am excited to start this next step in my life. POWERFUL EXPERIENCE:

Madison, CT During a cross-country race my junior year, I collapsed from heat exhaustion. Although I can’t really remember collapsing, what I do remember is the quick thinking and concern of my teammates and coaches, and the number of texts and visits I received both at the hospital and the Health Center after the fact. Of course, I would have been cared for at any school in this situation, but I’m convinced that the extent to which people look after each other here is hard to match at other places. This experience continually reminds me that the goodness and grace we foster within these walls pays dividends in the way we act in the “real world.” FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: Even though freshman year is a year of tough transitions, everyone eventually undergoes turning points that help them integrate into high school life. For me, that turning point was the Choral Scholars’ Spring Break tour of Cuba. It was a week of unexpected experiences, including awkward salsa classes and an impromptu performance at a cigar factory. Throughout the week, we were united through our music-making, our unfamiliarity with our surroundings, and our awareness that we had an opportunity most Americans wouldn’t get to experience. It’s been such an honor and privilege to work closely with the music and Chapel programs at St. Andrew’s. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Don’t try to be someone you’re not; St. Andrew’s will appreciate you for who you are and will value the strengths you bring to the community. HOMETOWN:

I think that being in close proximity and connection with the faculty has been a monumental gift to my experience at St. Andrew’s. Having a gifted team of people who are always there to answer questions and offer support has been very special and helpful, and I am very grateful for it. RECALL IN A DECADE: The thing that will always stick with me after I leave SAS is the friendships I have made through living on a dorm. Having roommates and friends around 24 hours a day to have conversation or do goofy things with has been a foundational facet of my time here, and I hope to carry these experiences and relationships with me throughout the rest of my life. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Do your work, befriend the faculty, save time for yourself, don’t stress about anything, and enjoy every second you have on this campus. Room 9 with Alexander Vogel and Kate Paris. Kate Paris particularly inspires me; her work ethic, humor, and kindness have been an integral part of my life. She also inspires me to be better by being better than me in absolutely everything. From math, to physics, to economics, to English, to sweating, and everything in between, she is far superior. Alex Vogel is okay too, I guess. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Transformational, defining, unopposable. Micah Jahmal Turpin Brooklyn, NY A recent powerful experience that I’ve had would have to be a conversation I had with my math teacher, Mr. Olana, about my general capabilities. FAVORITE CLASS/TEAM/CLUB/ACTIVITY: The football team, because of what the team meant to everyone who played on it, and the way it bonded a random group of guys and coaches on campus. It was also pretty fun—most of the time. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: The Frosty Run. It was the event that made the biggest impact on me and my understanding of the school during my freshman year. RECALL IN A DECADE: I think I’ll always recall my experiences on the Front Lawn. Never will I forget the FroLa in all of its glory. The amount of life-long connections I know I’ve made in this place is unfathomable to me. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Transformative, engaging, and unique. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Explore everything that is presented to you here. Sharon Gwendolyn Williams Philadelphia, PA When Bryan Stevenson came to address the student body. The passion and drive he has for his field is INSANE! It motivated me to find something I love to do and keep working at that. COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: I submitted a proposal for the Student Organization Committee during my junior spring and started it during my senior fall. The committee helps students get more organized across all aspects of life. I’ve met with a lot of different peers over the course of this year and have gotten to know each one of them better. RECALL IN A DECADE: The sound of the bells chiming will stick with me forever. I still hear them when I go home during school breaks. I’ll always remember that reading is fundamental. And I will always remember my junior year English teacher, Mr. Torrey, and his love for Flannery O’Connor. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SAS: Vivacious, lively, and spontaneous. Newark, DE During freshmen orientation, we all had to gather in Engelhard before going on the scavenger hunt. When we walked in, all the girls sat on one side of the room and all the boys sat on the other, and no one talked to each other. It was pretty much like that for the whole day. When orientation was finished, we all went to sit outside on the Front Lawn. Suddenly, Alice shouted, “Hey guys, look at the sunset.” We all got up and began to walk down the Main Drive, and when I looked behind me I saw everyone mingling and talking, no longer separated by gender. It’s a moment I’ll never forget. Ever since then, we’ve all been inseparable. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: The Carol Shout. My biology class sophomore year. Every test was open-note, and so my ability to recall information was never evaluated. Instead, Mr. O’Connell only ever asked us questions with creative solutions. By forfeiting that his students commit the entire curriculum to memory, Mr. O’Connell gave us more time to develop a three-dimensional understanding of biological concepts, and I learned for learning’s sake. This deep learning helped me realize that I love biology, and this made class a lot of fun for me. COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT: The SAS Supper Club! The Student Diversity Committee was my favorite activity because, through planning events like the Equity Conference and MLK Day programming, we were able to help members of the community to see the importance and the nuances of diversity. I think without this group, I never would have been able to put myself out there in a way that was actually meaningful. FAVORITE SAS MEMORY/TRADITION/PLACE: One of my favorite SAS memories was my first walk to town freshman year. We went with a huge group to Starbucks and Acme, and I vividly remember buying this Frozen-themed water bottle—a memory that has never left me. For me, this trip to town set the tone for our freshman year because each thing we did—trips to town, Four Square on the Front Lawn, or walks in the woods— was always together. ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN & FUTURE STUDENTS: Cherish the time you have here. When I look back on every moment here at SAS, large or small, they seem like so long ago, and I think, if I took the time to slow down and actually cherish those moments, I would have enjoyed my time here even more.
