Pay Dirt September 2, 2018 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary On this Labor Day weekend, we explore the purpose of our work as Christians in the world. A good theology of work is rooted in the Holy Spirit and the transformation of the new creation. If we want to flourish, to hit “pay dirt,” then our best bet is to accept God’s kingdom invitation to both receive and carry the seed of the kingdom through all of the land. The test of our work is its meaningfulness in relationship to this new creation.

PRELUDE | Prelude in C Major, BWV 531 J.S. Bach, composer | Yunjung Lee, organ *CALL TO WORSHIP From the mustard seed a great and mighty shrub emerges. Good things can come from something that seemed so insignificant! The spore of the yeast can leaven the whole loaf of bread. We can be those people who bring hope and peace to God’s world. Come, let us praise the God of great and mighty wonders. Let our spirits soar in gratitude for the opportunities God gives us to create his kingdom here on earth. Amen. *OPENING HYMN | Holy, Holy, Holy 64 | Nicea *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE OF PARDON Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. All pray in silence. Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Glory to God. Amen. *Please rise in body or spirit. 2

In this instance, catholic means universal.
*DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him, above ye heavenly hosts; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OFFERTORY | Seed That In Earth is Dying Brad Ellingboe, arranger | Chancel Choir 1. Seed that in earth is dying grows into ears of grain. Grapes that are crushed in the vessel turn into golden wine. God, through this mystery grant us faith in our deepest darkness, life in our night and death.
3. Seed that in earth is dying rises to bear much fruit. Christ, as we meet at your table, give us the bread of life. Lord, we do thank and adore you! Unceasing praise of the ages rises from night and death.
2. We were baptized in Jesus, into his death and grave, to resurrection’s promise: praise and eternal life. Heaven’s own praises begin here where you yourself are near us, deep in our night and death.

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP *CLOSING HYMN | Christ for the World We Sing 568 | Italian Hymn BENEDICTION POSTLUDE | Fugue in C Major, BWV 531 J.S. Bach, composer | YunJung Lee, organ
Church offices will be closed on Monday, September 3, in observance of Labor Day.
New Worship Series | September 8/9-October 6/7 | “What do you want?” This question, not what you believe, is Jesus’ primary question to us. It isn’t our thoughts that drive our behavior, but our habits, which come from our desires. In other words, our desires define us. The solution is to order our desires, or as Jesus says, “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.” If we want to change for the better, we need to not simply believe better propositions, but learn to practice good habits.
