WHYI

GIVE W H Y N OT ? November 18, 2018 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary In the middle of several stories in Matthew’s gospel about meeting people in their place of need, Jesus stops the most selfish man in town and challenges him to learn what it means to give. When we give, we see that God does more than give us things in return - God is giving himself, through his son Jesus and through the Holy Spirit, who reshapes our hearts to be like Christ’s. Our generosity becomes a reflection of the love, sacrifice and self-emptying of the Creator, who is the source of all gifts.

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

PRELUDE | Marche Triomphale

Théodore Dubois, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *CALL TO WORSHIP In the midst of a world where people hunger and thirst, Come worship a God who feeds the hungry. In the midst of a world where people are abused and oppressed, Come worship a God who calls for compassion and justice. In the midst of a world filled with wars and rumor of war, Come worship a God who desires nothing less than peace for the world. In the midst of a world where love is not freely shown and forgiveness is hard to find, Come worship a God whose grace and love know no end. *OPENING HYMN | Come, Ye Thankful People Come 694 | St. George’s Windsor *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him all creatures, here below; praise him above, ye heavenly hosts; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen. OPENING PRAYER O God, we thank you for this earth, our home; For the wide sky and the blessed sun, For the salt in the sea and the running water, For the everlasting hills And the never-resting winds, For trees and the common grass underfoot. We thank you for our senses By which we hear the songs of birds, *Please rise in body or spirit. 2

+In this instance, catholic means universal.

And see the splendor of the summer fields, And taste of the autumn fruits, And rejoice in the feel of the snow, And smell the breath of the spring. Grant us a heart wide open to all this beauty; And save our souls from being so blind That we pass unseeing When even the common thornbush Is aflame with your glory, O God our creator, Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. CHARLES STOKES SCHOLARSHIP Jennifer Kilpatrick & Glenn Johnson Charles Stokes St. Andrew Permanent Endowment Scholars WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Scarlett Reed Focht, daughter of Emily and Kyle Focht We are happy to celebrate your entrance into Christ’s holy church and welcome you into this church family.
