Making Home December 16, 2018 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary Earth is our home. God made this earth for all of us, and there is no other option or place to go! When God comes home he invites us to join him in making things right again. Our task is to help prepare the way through our love for each other.

OPENING PRAYER Inviting The Lord requires of us a pure offering, without blemish or spot. We must be right with God and our neighbor to offer ourselves or our gifts to God. Therefore, let us confess our sins against God, and reconcile with our neighbors. Let us pray. Confessing We have grieved your Spirit by our sin. (Based on I Thessalonians 5:16-23, NRSV) We have not been steadfast in prayer. We have failed to give thanks. We have quenched the Spirit. Silence We have ignored or despised the words of the prophets. We have not abstained from every form of evil. Forgive us, O God. Realign our wills with yours. And fill us with your joy. Silence Pardoning and Assurance May the God of peace sanctify you entirely, and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound now and to the day of the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Your sins are forgiven. Your sins are forgiven. Glory to God! Amen. PRELUDE | While By My Sheep Cynthia Dobrinski, composer | Bells of St. Andrew, Lynn Hayes, director; Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *OPENING HYMN | Good Christian Friends Rejoice 224 | In Dulci Jubilo
*Please rise in body or spirit. 2
1
Good Christian friends, rejoice, With heart and soul and voice; Give ye heed to what we say: Jesus Christ is born today; Ox and ass before Him bow; And He is in the manger now. Christ is born today! Christ is born today!
3 Good Christian friends, rejoice, With heart and soul and voice; Now ye need not fear the grave: Jesus Christ was born to save! Calls you one and calls you all, To gain His everlasting hall. Christ was born to save! Christ was born to save!
2 Good Christian friends, rejoice, With heart and soul and voice; Now ye hear of endless bliss: Jesus Christ was born for this! He has opened heaven’s door, And we are blest forevermore. Christ was born for this! Christ was born for this! *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. LIGHTING THE ADVENT WREATH | John and Sue Shelley “The LORD has done great things for us, and we are overjoyed. … Let those who plant with tears reap the harvest with joyful shouts.” (Psalm 126:3, 5 CEB) God of Joy, you enter the wilderness of our world and proclaim that there is a way to reach home again. God of Joy, you break through clouds of despair and sorrow to bring good news to your people. God of Joy, you send hope into the world in the form of a tiny baby. We, God’s people, sing songs of joy with the prophet, “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God” (Isaiah 61:10, NRSV). On this third Sunday of Advent, we light this candle, knowing that joy is our true home. All [sung]: “Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.” WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
