Sharing Home December 23, 2018 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary The beauty of a good home is that it is a place for love and building one another up. Home is about people those that are with us now, and the ones who have come before. The promise of Christmas is that ultimately, we will get to be with everyone - those we are with now and those with whom we will one day be reunited.

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

PRELUDE | Toccata on “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing” David Willcocks, arranger | YunJung Lee, Larry and Susan Hauser Organ Scholar CALL TO WORSHIP Christ came to be our King. We have come to be Christ’s people. The King of Kings calls us to follow. We have come to follow him. Christ is our King. And we are his people. *OPENING HYMN | The First Noel 245 | The First Noel | Verses 1-4 1

The first Noel the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Refrain: Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel.

3

And by the light of that same star three Wise Men came from country far; to seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. (Refrain)

4 This star drew nigh to the northwest, o’er Bethlehem it took its rest; and there it did both stop and stay, right over the place where Jesus lay. (Refrain)

2 They looked up and saw a star shining in the east, beyond them far; and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. (Refrain) *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. LIGHTING THE ADVENT WREATH | Jeff, Donna, Jake, and Callie Anthony “Our souls magnify the Lord and our spirits rejoice in God for God has looked with favor on us, God’s servants.” *Please rise in body or spirit. 2

In this instance, catholic means universal.

“God has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly. God has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty.” God of Justice, God of Peace, we open our hearts to you. Give us grace to be instruments of your righteousness. Give us courage to turn away from distractions and distortions and turn toward the home you have made, are making, and will complete through Christ. We, God’s people, sing songs of joy with the prophet, “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God.” (Isaiah 61:10, NRSV) On this fourth Sunday of Advent, the morning of Christmas Eve, we light this candle, turning with courage toward the One who makes a home among us. (Sung): “Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.” WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS BAPTISMAL HYMN | Infant Holy, Infant Lowly 229 | W Zlobie Lezy | Verse 1

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Grace Evangeline Brammer, daughter of Sarah and Mark Brammer Robert Harley Davenport, son of Eve and Bret Davenport We are happy to celebrate your entrance into Christ’s holy church and welcome you into this church family. Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, praises voicing, greet the morrow: Christ the babe was born for you. SPECIAL MUSIC | Who Would Imagine a King Warren/Hill, composers | Sarah Brammer, soloist
