Am I a Real Christian? January 27, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary What happens the day after a person accepts Jesus as their savior? While the life of the almost-Christian practices the rituals of religion and tries to be nice to other people, the life of a real Christian is characterized by real love-sacrificial, giving love, which can begin only on the full realization that God has first loved us.

PRELUDE | A Trumpet Minuet Alfred Hollins, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *CALL TO WORSHIP From John 13:34-35, the words of Jesus: “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Let us pray: Loving God, we come to worship today because we love you, and we want to love you more. We come to worship needing love in our lives: love for family, friends, strangers, enemies. In this hour of worship, touch our hearts, fill our hearts, open our hearts to your love which passes all understanding. Amen. *OPENING HYMN | Love Divine, All Love’s Excelling 384 | Beecher *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

OPENING PRAYER God of all, you love us beyond compare and are faithful to us even when we turn away. You are patient and wise, caring and just. We admit that we are not worthy of your love for us or deserving of your good favor. We have ignored your will, treated others of your children with disdain, and failed to be grateful for your mercy and blessings. Forgive us once again. Restore us to right relationship with you and with one another, for we ask it in Christ’s name. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Notes on the Cover Art The idea of a “way” suggests we’re on a journey. But it’s not just any old journey. When we follow Jesus, it is like opening a door into a completely different way of seeing the same world we’ve already been living in.

The Wesleyan Way: Worship Series | January 12/13-March 2/3 | Sometimes the “rules” of Christianity can seem so complex. An 18th century English pastor named John Wesley taught that the best guide for the journey of life and faith goes beyond the important forms and rituals of religion to a place of rediscovering the joy and freedom that the earliest followers of Jesus felt. Wesley sparked a worldwide revival of Christian faith by pointing to a way of following Jesus based on a real relationship where we can find God’s grace. This series looks at eight core aspects of faith that lead to a joyful and abundant life. 5
