Am I a Sinner? February 10, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary The world wants to hand out participation trophies for life. But acknowledging our brokenness and limitations isn’t a downer; it is the starting place of wisdom. Sin is a reality—as is the grace that God offers to heal us.

PRELUDE | Concerto in G Major Johann Sebastian Bach, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, Organist *CALL TO WORSHIP AND HYMN | Come and Find the Quiet Center | Beach Spring | 2128 Come, all who are weary and burdened. It is here that you will find rest. We come, bringing our joys and sorrows, dreams and aspirations, successes and shortcomings to God. We come seeking a hope and love we know we cannot offer ourselves. Come and find the quiet center in the crowded life we lead, find the room for hope to enter, find the frame where we are freed: clear the chaos and the clutter, clear our eyes, that we can see all the things that really matter, be at peace, and simply be. Though we are different and have encountered a host of differing circumstances, God awaits us with love and acceptance. Stress and strife, sorrow and sadness, and an infinite list of mundane details claim too much of our lives. Slow our pace, that we might hear your voice among the clatter with which we surround ourselves. Silence is a friend who claims us, cools the heat and slows the pace, God it is who speaks and names us, knows our being, touches base, making space within our thinking, lifting shades to show the sun, raising courage when we’re shrinking, finding scope for faith begun. Come, now is the time to give to God all the brokenness you have experienced. Healing and restoring God, touch our lives and bring us to wholeness with you. And in so doing, may we offer each other grace, forgiveness, and compassion, as vessels of your unwavering and steadfast love. In the Spirit let us travel, open to each other’s pain, let our loves and fears unravel, celebrate the space we gain: there’s a place for deepest dreaming, there’s a time for heart to care, in the Spirit’s lively scheming there is always room to spare! *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*CLOSING HYMN | Blessed Assurance 369 | Assurance 1 Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his Spirit, washed in his blood. Refrain: This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.
2 Perfect submission, perfect delight, visions of rapture now burst on my sight; angels descending bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love. (Refrain) 3 Perfect submission, all is at rest; I in my Savior am happy and blest, watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in his love. (Refrain)

Notes on the Cover Art The Gospel of John in the New Testament tells a story of Jesus speaking to a group of religious people about a woman being judged for her sin. They want to kill her, but Jesus tells them, “Whoever hasn’t sinned should throw the first stone.” In one sentence, he changes the stones from an image of restitution to an image of the sin that is in all of us.

The Wesleyan Way: Worship Series | January 12/13-March 2/3 | Sometimes the “rules” of Christianity can seem so complex. An 18th century English pastor named John Wesley taught that the best guide for the journey of life and faith goes beyond the important forms and rituals of religion to a place of rediscovering the joy and freedom that the earliest followers of Jesus felt. Wesley sparked a worldwide revival of Christian faith by pointing to a way of following Jesus based on a real relationship where we can find God’s grace. This series looks at eight core aspects of faith that lead to a joyful and abundant life. 4
