Why is the Christian Life So Hard? February 24, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary The gap between Jesus and the lifestyles of those who claim to follow Jesus can be so wide that it becomes the reason an unbelieving world does not believe. Our basic nature is not to love God and our neighbor—this is why the Christian life is hard. When Jesus redeems us, he also calls us to a new way of living. This means something very different than simply avoiding immoral actions; it means changing our hearts and lives.

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

OPENING PRAYER Almighty and merciful God, we open our hearts up to you, trusting that your love and goodness is stronger than all of our shortcomings. We have been afraid to trust you, and we have forgotten the assurance of your unending presence. We have sacrificed our convictions, quieted our voices, given in to distractions, and looked out for ourselves above all else. We have thought about giving up when the task before us seems too great. Forgive us for all these things, and help us to be guided by your Spirit and to be filled with the One who gives us life. Amen. PRELUDE | Finlandia Michael Mazzatenta, arranger | Bells of St. Andrew, Lynn Hayes, conductor *CALL TO WORSHIP A voice cries out: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” Speak to us Lord. As you promised through your prophets Isaiah and John the Baptist, come to us now. May all the barriers be removed so that we can receive your word and worship you, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. *OPENING HYMN | Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee 89 | Hymn To Joy

2

1

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

3

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest, well-spring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest! Thou our Father, Christ our brother, all who live in love are thine; teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

2

All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heaven reflect thy rays, stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us to rejoice in thee.

4

Mortals, join the mighty chorus which the morning stars began; love divine is reigning o’er us, binding all within its span. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife; joyful music leads us sunward, in the triumph song of life.

*Please rise in body or spirit.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. 3 Breathe on me, Breath of God, till I am wholly thine, till all this earthly part of me glows with thy fire divine.

2 Breathe on me, Breath of God, until my heart is pure, until with thee I will one will, to do and to endure.

4 Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never die, but live with thee the perfect life of thine eternity.

Notes on the Cover Art The Bible uses an image of a mountaintop to describe the feeling of being close to God. While the mountaintop is glorious, climbing the mountain can be tough. The Christian life can sometimes feel like ascending the sheer face of a mountain. This is why it’s better to make the climb with others.

The Wesleyan Way: Worship Series | January 12/13-March 2/3 | Sometimes the “rules” of Christianity can seem so complex. An 18th century English pastor named John Wesley taught that the best guide for the journey of life and faith goes beyond the important forms and rituals of religion to a place of rediscovering the joy and freedom that the earliest followers of Jesus felt. Wesley sparked a worldwide revival of Christian faith by pointing to a way of following Jesus based on a real relationship where we can find God’s grace. This series looks at eight core aspects of faith that lead to a joyful and abundant life. 4
