April 14, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary The Christian belief that Jesus came to save the world and establish the kingdom of God is a given. But what does “kingdom” mean? For first century Jews, a kingdom didn’t mean a state of truth, spirit and relationship, but a physical ruling government. His followers expected Jesus to begin a revolution: attack the Romans and seize political control of the region. But that wasn’t Jesus’ plan at all. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, he had a different plan in mind.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING PRAYER Almighty God, on this day your Son Jesus Christ entered the holy city of Jerusalem and was proclaimed King by those who spread their garments and palm branches along his way. Let those branches be for us signs of his victory, and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our Lord, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life. In his name we pray. Amen. PRELUDE | Processional March Atonín Dvořák, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire and YunJung Lee, Larry and Susan Hauser Organ Scholar SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Madeleine Emma McCray, daughter of Scott and Lindsey McCray We are happy to celebrate your entrance into Christ’s holy church and welcome you into this church family. With you we renew our vows to uphold the church through worshiping, connecting, serving, and giving. With God’s help, we will shape our lives to follow the example of Christ, to surround you in steadfast love, so you may grow in the faith, and be confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to abundant life. SUNG RESPONSE Jesus loves me still today, walking with me on my way, wanting as a friend to give light and love to all who live. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so. *CALL TO WORSHIP Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever. Hosanna to God, Hosanna in the highest! Let Israel say, “His love endures forever!” and all who fear God say, “His love endures forever!” Hosanna to God, Hosanna in the highest! With the Lord on our side, what can we fear? What can humankind do? Hosanna to God, Hosanna in the highest! We shall triumph over those who surround us and stand in confidence in the Lord, our God! Hosanna to God, Hosanna in the highest! The Lord is our strength and our might. The Lord has become our salvation! Hosanna to God, Hosanna in the highest!

*OPENING HYMN | Hosanna, Loud Hosanna 278 | Ellacombe *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PSALM 130
Out__ of the deep
I
call
un - to thee.
Hear___ my
voice.
NIV Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you. I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. Common English Bible I cry out to you from the depths, Lord—my Lord, listen to my voice! Let your ears pay close attention to my request for mercy! If you kept track of sins, Lord—my Lord, who would stand a chance? But forgiveness is with you—that’s why you are honored. I hope, Lord. My whole being hopes, and I wait for God’s promise. My whole being waits for my Lord—more than the night watch waits for morning; yes, more than the night watch waits for morning! PASTORAL AND LORD’S PRAYER
+In this instance, catholic means universal.

OFFERTORY | Psalm 150 Taylor Davis, composer | Chancel Choir Praise the Lord with the trumpet sound! Play the harp and play the timbrel. Play the gong and sound the cymbal! Crashing symbol! Let everything with breath praise the Lord. In God’s own house pronounce his praise, hi grace he there reveals; To heaven your joy and wonder raise, for there his glory dwells. Let all your sacred passions move, while you rehearse his deeds; But the great work of saving love your highest praise exceeds. All that have motion, life, and breath, proclaim your Maker blest; Yet when my voice expires in death, my soul shall praise him best.
