9:30 a.m., Sanctuary What does it mean to be a βsaintβ? We think of saints as otherworldly do-gooders, but saint is actually synonymous with βbeliever.β From the story of Aaron in the Old Testament to the story of William Wilberforce, the definition of sainthood begins when we learn to trust God and obey Godβs ways. The first attribute of sainthood is obedience. In obedience, we begin to flourish, in our lives and in the common good of society.

PRELUDE | Elegy Hubert Parry, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *OPENING HYMN | For All the Saints 2283 | O Waly Waly *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. ALL SAINTS REMEMBRANCE Lord God, by your grace we are running a race. We are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses β Patriarchs and matriarchs, prophets and psalmists, disciples and evangelists, martyrs and saints. We thank you for their example. We praise you for their lives of faith. For all your saints, O Lord, who strove in you to live, who followed, obeyed, adored you β we sing songs of thanksgiving. Loved ones now resting in you, who guided us, nurtured and cared for us; ancestors who worked and traveled, lived and died that we might be who we are, where we are β your precious children in this community of believers. We thank you for their example. We praise you for their lives of faith. For all your saints, O Lord, who strove in you to die, who counted you their great reward β accept our thankful cry. We thank you for their example. We praise you for their lives of faith. For this, your name we bless, and humbly pray anew, that we like them in holiness may live and die in you. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Christ, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Amen. ALL SAINTS PRAYER We bless your holy name, O God, for all your servants who, having finished their course, now rest from their labors. Give us grace to follow the example of their steadfastness and faithfulness, to your honor and glory; through Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

*CLOSING HYMN | Sing with All the Saints in Glory 702 | Hymn to Joy *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE | Trumpet Tune David German, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist The offertory this morning is written in a traditional spiritual style. The call and response between the soloist and the choir is how music of the slaves often worked; a leader would sing a melody, and those listening would respond in kind. You can almost picture people working hard in the fields, singing to pass time and to lighten their load, referencing their master, but really meaning that they were working for a higher power. Itβs a toe tapping form of music and itβs an intersection of social commentary and theology. Second Saturday Series βSongs of Comfort and Strengthβ Saturday, November 9, 4:30 p.m., Sanctuary Phillip Haworth, vocalist and Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, pianist
Worship Series | November 2/3-23/24 | What is a saint? Most of us think of really religious people, perhaps people that are beyond us in terms of their virtue and character β for example, their goodness and ability to forgive. But sainthood isnβt a rank we achieve like a master spiritual level in a game of life. The biblical definition of saint is very simple: βbeliever.β When you and I put our trust in Jesus Christ, we become saints, made holy through Jesusβ death and resurrection. If as believers, we are all saints, then what does that mean for our lives? In this series, we address what it means to be a saint. These four attributes help us understand the biblical definition of sainthood and bridge the space between the everyday lives we lives and the holiness which we have received in Christ and to which we are called. Through faith in Christ, we can be saints. 4

William Wilberforce (1759-1833) | William Wilberforce is perhaps the most important social reformer who ever lived, but his great work began by turning down the opportunity of a lifetime. Two centuries ago, Wilberforce put Γ’€œprinciple above partyΓ’€? and gave up the chance to be Prime Minister of the greatest empire in the world, England. Instead, having converted to Christianity, he devoted his life to abolishing the slave trade. It took him fifty years; he died three days after Parliament outlawed slavery in 1833. 5
