A third attribute of what it means to be a saint is in our acts of service. Our love for God and people compels us to act in love to serve those in need. This outward focus, seen in the biblical story of Stephen, was new in ancient culture and is increasingly new and different in our culture, too.

PRELUDE | Valse Mignonne, Op. 142, No. 2 Sigfrid Karg-Elert, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *OPENING PRAYER Almighty God, your truth is made known in your Word. Guide us to seek the truth of the human person. Teach us the way to love because you are Love. Jesus, you embody Love and Truth. Help us to recognize your face in the poor. Enable us to live out our vocation to bring love and justice to your people. Holy Spirit, you inspire us to transform our world. Empower us to seek the common good for all persons. Give us a spirit of solidarity and make us one human family. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. *OPENING HYMN | Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise 103 | St. Denio Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice like mountains high soaring above thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. To all, life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, and wither and perish, but naught changeth thee. Thou reignest in glory; thou dwellest in light; thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render: O help us to see ‘tis only the splendor of light hideth thee. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven *Please rise in body or spirit. 2
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS MIDDLE HYMN | Ubi Caritas (Live in Charity) 2179 | Ubi Caritas Live in charity and steadfast love. Live in charity; God will dwell with you.

WITNESS STORY | Joseph’s Coat OFFERTORY | Jubilate Deo in C Benjamin Britten, composer | Chancel Choir Ensemble O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands; Serve the Lord with gladness, And come before His presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord He is God: It is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. O go your way into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise; Be thankful unto him, and speak good of His name. For the Lord is gracious, His mercy is everlasting And His truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, Word without end, Amen. +In this instance, catholic means universal. 3

George I. Seney (1826-1893) | American Methodists have always been known for ministry to the poor, in sharing the burdens of the underprivileged and the unfortunate, and in caring for the sick. In 1881, an editorial in a Methodist paper in New York suggested it was “time to provide charitable hospitals for the working class” immigrants and their American-born children. George I. Seney immediately responded with 16 lots in Brooklyn and a cash donation toward the “erection of a hospital … open to Jew and Gentile, Protestant and Catholic, heathen and infidel on the same terms.” The unknown writer of that article and Seney’s response led to the first Methodist hospital in the world. Those acts of service changed hundreds of thousands of lives.
