Stories at the Hearth December 1, 2019

9:30 a.m., Sanctuary Everyone loves a good story and Christmas is the season for classic stories. The birth of Jesus is not only the “greatest story ever told,” it’s part of a larger story. The New Testament begins with the story of Jesus, as told through the entire story of the history of the Bible and God’s people.

*CLOSING HYMN | I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light 206 | Houston I want to walk as a child of the light. I want to follow Jesus. God set the stars to give light to the world. The star of my life is Jesus. Refrain: In him there is no darkness at all. The night and the day are both alike. The Lamb is the light of the city of God. Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus. I want to see the brightness of God. I want to look at Jesus. Clear Sun of Righteousness, shine on my path, and show me the way to the Father. [Refrain] I’m looking for the coming of Christ. I want to be with Jesus. When we have run with patience the race, we shall know the joy of Jesus. [Refrain] *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE | Toccata on ‘Veni Emmanuel’ Andrew Carter, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist 3

Our service this morning has elements that span many centuries of the Christian faith. The opening hymn text and antiphons have their roots in the 9th century, while the tune is from 1500’s France; the Advent wreath began in the 1500’s, created by German Lutherans; our offertory was written by Mozart when he was 24; and our closing hymn was written by a Houstonian in the mid-60’s. The Advent wreath did not really find its way to the American church until the 20th century. The symbolism is rich: a circle represents God’s infinite love; the evergreen shows the eternal life Jesus offers; the candles are showing us the coming light of Christ. The color of the candles is not standard - churches in the UK, for instance, often use red candles, while we have adopted purple or blue for three of the four weeks, and a pink candle acknowledges Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”) Sunday. Advent used to be a time of fasting, and purple is the penitential color for that practice.

Comfort and Joy Nov.30/Dec. 1-21/22 | Traditions are at the heart of the holiday season. Yet for many of us, the warmth of food, stories, music, and gift giving among family is merely aspirational. The reality is that Christmas can be a time of loneliness and sadness. The good news of Christmas is that the story of Jesus is actually a story about finding community, connection, and family. It’s a place where we can both be comfortable in who we are and called to new life.
