PRELUDE | Tidings of Comfort and Joy

*PRAYER FOR EPIPHANY Wise men came from the East to worship one they had never seen. They brought rich gifts to one they did not even know. They were not Jews, yet they came to worship the King of the Jews. They were outsiders, yet their offerings were accepted. They had strange ideas about stars, but saw coherence in the whole world’s plan. They grew in wisdom. For them, a King had come that would not be a tyrant. The little child was for them the focus of all meaning. This King would make all things new. They were dreamers who saw beyond the facts to the reality, and they went home changed. Come, come everyone, from the East and from everywhere, Come and worship Christ, the new-born King. *OPENING HYMN | The First Noel 245 | The First Noel *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven *Please rise in body or spirit. 2
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OFFERTORY | We Three Kings David Willcocks, arranger | Chancel Choir We three kings of Orient are; bearing gifts we traverse afar, field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star. Refrain: O star of wonder, star of light, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light. Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain, gold I bring to crown him again, King forever, ceasing never, over us all to reign. [Refrain] Frankincense to offer have I; incense owns a Deity nigh; prayer and praising, voices raising, worshiping God on high. [Refrain] Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom; sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in the stone-cold tomb. [Refrain]
Glorious now behold him arise; King and God and sacrifice: Alleluia, Alleluia, sounds through the earth and skies. [Refrain] +In this instance, catholic means universal. 3

*CLOSING HYMN | Go, Tell It on the Mountain 251 | Go, Tell It on the Mountain *BENEDICTION God of dreams and discoveries, May your epiphany open our eyes: May we be wise enough To humbly approach the infant child, And as we step into another year, May we find courage to go a different way. Amen.
POSTLUDE | Toccata sur “Il est né, le divin Enfant” Denis Bédard, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist As the 12 days of Christmas come to a close, we finally get to properly acknowledge the three wise men. Our service today reminds us that it took them awhile to follow the star, and when they found the Christ child, their instincts took them home a new way in defiance of King Herod. From angels visiting Mary to shepherds in the fields to the birth to these kings, the order of the Christmas story is vital.
