January 19, 2020 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary With an internal compass to understand wisdom, we discover courage to speak up for what is right. However, the source of bravery isn’t our own strength but God: our protector, our shield, our stronghold. We become cowardly when we depend on ourselves for courage: we lose faith and falter. We become rash and fool ourselves into thinking we don’t need God’s grace.
CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
PRELUDE | Vivace from Trio Sonata No. 6 in G Major, BWV 530 J.S. Bach, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *CALL TO WORSHIP Your light has filled our lives, but we have not shared it with others. Lord, have mercy on us. You have marked us as your own in baptism, but we have not lived as your faithful people. Christ, have mercy on us. You have called us to be a light to the nations, but we have hidden our light under a bushel. Lord, have mercy on us. Transform us by the power of your Holy Spirit so that we may live out our baptism as your new creation, forgiven and made whole by your matchless love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Thanks be to God! Amen. *OPENING HYMN | Come, Thou Almighty King 61 | Italian Hymn | Verses 1-4 *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. CHILDREN’S MOMENT WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS MIDDLE HYMN | Amazing Grace 378 | Amazing Grace | Verses 1, 2, 4 Ephesians 2:8-10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. New International Version Sing Verse 1 2
*Please rise in body or spirit. +In this instance, catholic means universal.
You are saved by God’s grace because of your faith. This salvation is God’s gift. It’s not something you possessed. It’s not something you did that you can be proud of. Instead, we are God’s accomplishment, created in Christ Jesus to do good things. God planned for these good things to be the way that we live our lives. Common English Bible Sing Verse 2 Now God has us where he wants us, with all the time in this world and the next to shower grace and kindness upon us in Christ Jesus. Saving is all his idea, and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It’s God’s gift from start to finish! We don’t play the major role. If we did, we’d probably go around bragging that we’d done the whole thing! No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing. The Message Sing Verse 4 SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Reese Saylor Helffrich, daughter of David and Katherine Helffrich We are happy to celebrate your entrance into Christ’s holy church and welcome you into this church family. With you we renew our vows to uphold the church through worshiping, connecting, serving, and giving. With God’s help, we will shape our lives to follow the example of Christ, to surround you in steadfast love, so you may grow in the faith, and be confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to abundant life. SUNG RESPONSE Jesus loves me still today, walking with me on my way, wanting as a friend to give light and love to all who live. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

*CLOSING HYMN | Amazing Grace 378 | Amazing Grace | Verse 6 *BENEDICTION I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside by thee. Exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, Let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. POSTLUDE | Toccata on Amazing Grace Christopher Pardini, arranger | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist
Worship Series | Through February 22/23 | This series focuses on seven “heavenly virtues.” Heavenly virtues are the sort of virtues you hope are used to describe you at your funeral, not the sort of attributes you put on your resume. True, lasting transformation — in our lives and in our communities — starts not with activism or philanthropy but with this inner change. All outer transformation begins with inner transformation. The question of virtue is about more than just morals. It is about creating a foundation of character in your life, and in your children’s lives, that can withstand the inevitable betrayals, hardships, and downturns that come with life. It is about making a conscious choice to opt-in to a different kind of life — one rooted in faith, sustained by hope, and characterized by love. 4
