February 2, 2020 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary Fasting is a crucial part of our faith journey when we choose not to satisfy our cravings, to connect with Christ in his suffering and to realize our identities are not centered in worldly things. However, God gives us all the gifts of creation; they are a “right, good and joyful thing. How do we find a balance between these two seemingly opposite commands?

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

PRELUDE | Intrada Festiva Dale Wood, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *CALL TO WORSHIP The sinners, the saints; the broken, the whole We all come seeking the One who offers grace and hope. The doubters, the devout; the wonderers, the wanderers We all seek to follow the One who works for justice and hope for all of God’s people. The hesitant, the heroic; the grandparents, the little children We all listen for the songs of joy all creation sings to the One who gives life and peace. *OPENING HYMN | Be Thou My Vision 451 | Slane | Verses 1-3 Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; naught be all else to me, save that thou art. Thou my best thought, by day or by night, waking or sleeping, thy presence my light. Be Thou my wisdom, and thou my true word; I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord; thou and thou only, first in my heart, great God of heaven, my treasure thou art. Great God of Heaven, my victory won, may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be my vision, O Ruler of all. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Please rise in body or spirit. 2

+In this instance, catholic means universal.

*CLOSING HYMN | Blessed Assurance 369 | Assurance | Verses 1-3 Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his Spirit, washed in his blood. (Refrain) This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. Perfect submission, perfect delight, visions of rapture now burst on my sight; angels descending bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love. (Refrain) Perfect submission, all is at rest; I in my Savior am happy and blest, watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in his love. (Refrain) *BENEDICTION I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside by thee. Exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, Let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. POSTLUDE | Fanfare Jacques Lemmens, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist
