February 9, 2020 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary Job experiences an immense amount of loss in a very short time. He grieves and mourns his losses, but does he truly express his honest thoughts and emotions? Eventually, he explodes in anger towards God in a way that isn’t helpful. What would have happened if Job had shown enough patience to grieve and express his frustration?

PRELUDE | Toccata Eugene Gigout, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *CALL TO WORSHIP A rich feast awaits those who call upon the Lord. God offers to us all the bounty of God’s love. How we have thirsted for hope and peace! How we have longed for joy and love! Know that God continually surrounds us with patience and persistence. Even when we have not produced the fruits that God seeks, God forgives and heals our weakness. God continually blesses and heals us. Praise be to God for God’s steadfast love. Amen. *OPENING HYMN | It Is Well With My Soul 377 | Ville du Havre | Verses 1-4 *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND PARDON Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. All pray in silence.
*Please rise in body or spirit. 2
+In this instance, catholic means universal.
Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Glory to God. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Clarkson Berenger Brown, son of David and Valerie Brown We are happy to celebrate your entrance into Christ’s holy church and welcome you into this church family. With you we renew our vows to uphold the church through worshiping, connecting, serving, and giving. With God’s help, we will shape our lives to follow the example of Christ, to surround you in steadfast love, so you may grow in the faith, and be confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to abundant life. SUNG RESPONSE Jesus loves me still today, walking with me on my way, wanting as a friend to give light and love to all who live. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

*CLOSING HYMN | Take My Life 399 | Messiah | Verses 1-3 *BENEDICTION I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside by thee. Exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, Let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. POSTLUDE | Final from Symphony No. 1 Louis Vierne, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist
A total coincidence, all of today’s music is from Europe or has European ties. Our opening hymn was written on the way to England in response to a tragic transatlantic shipwreck; our closing hymn was written by an English poet who died at 43 having lived a life of faith; the offertory was written in Paris in the mid-1800’s, originally for tenor soloist, harp, cello, and organ. The prelude and postlude are also French – Franck, who wrote our offertory, taught Vierne, who wrote our postlude.
