REAL
TAUK

Real TAUK- I moved to New York City a few years ago I was looking for a bit of an outdoor refuge, a place to escape the on weekends and
get out doors. Several friends suggested I go check out Montauk. I’d seen it portrayed in fashion magazines and discussed in New York Socialite conversation and while that allure draws NYC to this tiny outpost every weekend it, I was curious about it for different reasons. I wondered about the people that lived there, what fueled their passions to covet an environment so much? To stay and work year round once the crowds have left and snow takes place for sand. A good friend of mine took me to visit and over the course of 24 hrs. he introduced me to people from all walks of life. People, who had born, bled and bred in Montauk. I didn’t approach it as identifying with the locals, on the contrary I told many of them I know nothing about their world but... I wanted to come see with an unbiased eye. These portraits are those observations. I’d always envisioned a second part of this series with images of these locals surfing in their other environment. But for some reason my timing was always off. I never could make it while the waves were good and connect with all the people I’d originally shot photos of… so I shelved the project for 3 years… In the years that passed I got to know most of the people through social media (mostly instagram) and it was that way I was introduced to James Katsipis. A local photographer who has dedicated most of his life documenting Montauk surf culture and knew most of the subjects intimately so I phoned him to see if he would be interested in collaborating. While I had caught the quiet moments of these people’s personalities he had captured the decisive moments of them on the water. It was a perfect balance. Images 1. Landscape .JK 2. Surfer .SE 3.
