2015–16 ANNUAL REPORT

MISSION Stanford Live presents a wide range of the finest performances from around the world, fostering a vibrant learning community and providing distinctive experiences through the performing arts. With its home at Bing Concert Hall, Stanford Live is simultaneously a public square, a sanctuary, and a lab, drawing on the breadth and depth of Stanford University to connect performance to the significant issues, ideas, and discoveries of our time. Stanford Live includes a wealth of collaborators and partners, including Stanford academic departments and individual faculty members, Stanford students, off-campus arts institutions, and community organizations. Crucially, Stanford Live supports the university’s focus on placing the arts at the heart of a Stanford education.

It is A pleasure to share Stanford Live’s FIRST ANNUAL REPORT WITH YOU. This report details the activities that took place across Stanford’s campus in what was a memorable year. Our 2015–16 season was filled with a range of programs that featured classical, contemporary, and multimedia extravaganzas— including a community dance celebration of Stanford and Silicon Valley. The diversity of events we offer continues to draw audiences from across the Bay Area and makes Stanford Live a vibrant part of the region’s cultural landscape. There is also an important Stanford Live story to tell beyond what you see on stage. Stanford Live creates many opportunities to connect Stanford students to great artists, their performances, and the creative process. In the past year alone, we presented an impressive array of master classes, coaching sessions, workshops, and more with great artists like pianist Murray Perahia, DJ Kid Koala, and percussionist Zakir Hussain. Our community engagement programs take artists into schools and communities, giving many children their first arts experience. Though our Live Context program, we offered a robust series of engaging events that built upon the intellectual depth and breadth of our programming, connecting artists and work with teaching and research at Stanford University. And the free Bing

Inside/Out open house event drew over 1,000 attendees who experienced performances and art-making that included cirque acts and a dance party led by San Francisco’s Non Stop Bhangra. Our primary home at Bing Concert Hall also hosts other activities including Department of Music rehearsals and concerts, Board of Trustee events, student gatherings, and other university receptions and functions. We are proud that this beautiful space has become such a desired venue for a wide range of campus stakeholders. As we look forward to another wonderful year ahead, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for being part of the Stanford Live family. With warm regards,

Chris Lorway Executive Director Stanford Live and Bing Concert Hall

PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS

29,542 Attendees

$1,283,131 Ticket Revenue

Throughout the past season, Stanford Live presented programming in venues across campus that engaged audiences around our artists and their work and served our educational mission. New work and innovation were central to the season, with Jonathan Berger’s world premiere of My Lai and the West Coast premiere of Darcy James Argue’s Real Enemies. DJ Kid Koala’s adaptation of his graphic novel, Nufonia Must Fall, exemplified the intersection between art and technology. We sought to reflect Silicon Valley’s diversity with programming that featured artists such as Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, Japan’s Yamato taiko ensemble, celebrated Mexican supergroup Los Tigres del Norte, and inter-cultural programs such as the Silk Road Ensemble. For our presentation of Keigwin + Company’s Bolero Silicon Valley, community members collaborated to create a work representing our region that featured students, scientists, and even a few dancing drones.

LIVE CONTEXT

In the 2015–16 season, our Live Context series examined two main ideas. Arts and Social Change featured performances and free talks with playwright Anna Deavere Smith, who explored ways that art can help cultivate equality, active citizenship, and a more just society.

1

War: Return and Recovery, featuring performances by Kronos Quartet and AXIS Dance Company, explored the personal realities and ethical complexity of military service, the return to civilian life, and the responsibilities we share. In addition to the featured performances, we invited the community to participate in workshops where uniforms worn in service were transformed into handmade paper.

K-12 PROGRAMS & TEACHER WORKSHOPS

3

Stanford Live’s community programs offered K-12 classrooms from 13 Bay Area school districts the opportunity to interact with our visiting artists. In addition to a sold-out student matinee presentation of Nufonia Must Fall, we presented teacher workshops on both shadow puppetry and comic book creation, expanding the range of arts integration training available to K-12 teachers. The Silk Road Ensemble student matinee and teacher workshop inspired a first-time partnership with SPICE (Stanford Program in International and Cross-Cultural Education), a K-14 curriculum program housed in the Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Studies.
