Stanford Live presents a wide range of the finest performances from around the world, fostering a vibrant learning community and providing distinctive experiences through the performing arts. With its primary home at Bing Concert Hall, Stanford Live is simultaneously a public square, a sanctuary, and a lab, drawing on the breadth and depth of Stanford University to connect performance to the significant issues, ideas, and discoveries of our time. Stanford Live includes a wealth of collaborators and partners, including Stanford academic departments and individual faculty members, Stanford students, off-campus arts institutions, and community organizations. Crucially, Stanford Live supports the university’s focus on placing the arts at the heart of a Stanford education. The 2016–17 season marked Season Five at Stanford Live.

This report showcases the range of programs and activities that took place during the 2016–17 season. Being new to Stanford, I had a particularly wonderful year as I got to better know the Stanford Live team, colleagues throughout the university, and long-time volunteers and audience members who continue to be invested in the success of our organization.
IT IS A PLEASURE TO SHARE OUR 2016–17 ANNUAL REPORT WITH YOU
It was also a year of experiments to see how we could better leverage the full capacity of our facilities. We introduced a Studio Series that transformed our rehearsal hall at Bing into an intimate nightclub. We played with seating configurations in the main hall to optimize both the artist and patron experience and brought our lobbies and adjacent lawn space to life with a variety of new programming initiatives. Once again, we sought to provide audiences with a lineup of artists that reflected the diversity of our region. We made connections between these visiting artists and our students and faculty, deepening the experience around the work they presented. In addition to our own programs, Bing hosted a range of activities during the season, including Department of Music rehearsals and concerts, Board of Trustees events, student gatherings, and other university receptions and functions. Harry Elam’s appointment as Vice President for the Arts signals an exciting time for the arts at Stanford. The combination of university and private support ensures that we can continue our journey to make Stanford Live the most exciting performing arts presenter in the Bay Area. With warm regards,
Chris Lorway Executive Director Stanford Live & Bing Concert Hall

NEW CONFIGURATIONS: INSIDE AND OUT Season Five was an opportunity to play with space, starting with our new cabaret series that transforms the underground rehearsal studio into an intimate club. Our new “end stage setup offers every patron a front-facing view of the performers, making it ideal for amplified shows. And over the summer, we continued this experiment beyond the Bing's four walls with our first performance on the east lawn for Music of Woodstock. We hope these changes will continue to provide more intimate interactions between artist and audience.

LIVE CONTEXT In the 2016–17 season, our Live Context series examined three main ideas. Islamic Voices featured performances and free talks with singer-songwriter Emel Mathlouthi, rapper Narcy, scholar Su'ad Abdul Khabeer, spoken-word poet Mark Gonzales, and other Stanford faculty examining the diversity of contemporary expressions of Muslim identity through music.

Imagining the West explored the American West with a live-music screening of Murat Eyuboglu's The Colorado, a family performance by the Okee Dokee Brothers, and a talk by National Geographic photographer Pete McBride, which brought attention to the region’s vital natural resources and what we can do to protect them. Through a partnership with the Stanford Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) and the Department of Art & Art History, Icons of Sound transformed the Bing into a virtual Hagia Sophia. This project included a weekend symposium with international scholars exploring how music and technology can excite our imaginations for bygone cultures.

In addition to four student matinees and five teacher workshops, K–12 programming expanded to include a new Artist-inSchools program. The program was piloted at four schools in East Palo Alto, led by teaching artists Armando Castellano and Quinteto Latino, a woodwind quintet devoted to music by Latino composers. The quintet members gave one-on-one coaching to music teachers, guest-taught classes, played side-by-side with students, and gave assembly performances.

Stanford is taking the arts to the next level. In winter 2017, the university announced the creation of a new arts leadership structure: the Office of the Vice President for the Arts. Led by Vice President Harry Elam and Associate Vice President Matthew Tiews, this new office will now oversee the strategic future of the nonacademic arts programs, which include Stanford Live and Bing Concert Hall, the Anderson Collection at Stanford University, Cantor Arts Center, the Stanford Arts Institute, and the Institute for Diversity in the Arts.
