It is a pleasure to share our 2018–19 Annual Report with you. The 2018-19 season marked a number of firsts for Stanford Live. In a year that explored ideas around life, love and loss, we invited a diverse range of first-time artists to campus, expanded into new venues, and reopened Frost Amphitheater. We launched a comedy series and welcomed renowned artists to campus for extended residencies. After a generation of intermittent use, Frost rejoined the Stanford ecosystem as a wonderful space to convene campus and community. The venue launched with the annual student Frost Fest and continued through a summer series that featured the return of the San Francisco Symphony and headline performances by popular artists. Nitin Sawhney and Inua Ellams joined us as the first recipients of the Stanford Presidential Residencies on the Future of the Arts. In addition to showcasing a broad range of his work in multiple venues, Sawhney collaborated with the Center for South Asia, the Stanford Symphony Orchestra, and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in bringing new and past works to life. And Ellams shared his love of creative writing, community building and storytelling in gatherings with Stanford students and via high school workshops in East Palo Alto.

Our expanded theater program had audience members running around campus to experience the musings of old friends at the pub at the Stanford golf course, the exploration of African culture, masculinity and kinship at the Roble Theater, and the mind-blowing trickery of an illusionist at the Frost green room. Once again, our halls and spaces welcomed student ensembles and various departments and faculty members for performances, meetings, and celebrations. A special shoutout to the team at Stanford Live who worked incredibly hard this season to realize all of the above. Finally, thank you to all of our supporters for helping us to deliver this ambitious program.

With warm regards,

Chris Lorway Executive Director Stanford Live

Goldenvoice and San Francisco Symphony Partnerships This season saw the muchanticipated return of Frost Amphitheater as a leading venue for live music in the Bay Area. Our partnerships with the Stanford Concert Network, the San Francisco Symphony, and Goldenvoice brought a broad variety of programming beginning in May 2019. These partnerships helped us introduce a wide range of artists to Frost, showing diverse audiences from throughout the community how truly special this space is.

The line-up included classical music (The San Francisco Symphony), pop & R&B (Lionel Richie, Jorja Smith, and Kali Uchis), electronic dance music (Odesza), hip-hop (BROCKHAMPTON), and legendary singer/songwriters (Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson). In a nod to the Grateful Dead's legacy at the venue, Joe Russo's Almost Dead brought joy and nostalgia to those who fondly remember the band's 14 shows at Frost.

It's hard to believe that we opened our Bing Studio cabaret space only two years ago with a performance by Alan Cumming in the 2016–17 season. In the last year, we presented 54 performances in this well-loved, intimate venue, bringing in performers like Germán López and Antonio Toledo who highlighted music from the Canary islands,

Transforming the Studio The 2018–19 season also brought several technically and aesthetically challenging theatrical productions requiring extensive set design and production in the Bing Studio. We presented Kaneza Schaal's Go Forth, which transformed the venue into an intimate theater experience inspired by the Egyptian Book of the Dead. For Half Straddle's Ghost Rings, a

platform stage was built to support a lively "pop-song cycle" featuring two vocalists, a live band, and papier-mâché props. For our presentation of Mouthpiece by Quote Unquote Collective in collaboration with Why Not Theatre, we transformed the space again, building out a set to pull the audience's focus onto two actors performing around a single bathtub.

Finding New Space for Theater One of the highlights of the season was the chance to introduce our audiences to theater works in new spaces. In addition to reconfiguring our Studio space for technically challenging and unique performances, we stretched across campus to bring the National Theater's Barber Shop Chronicles to the new Roble Studio Theater for a four-

night, sold-out run. We also presented a similarly sold-out run of Abbey Theater's Two Pints in the Coupa Cafe pub at Stanford's golf course. The Frost Amphitheater green room was transformed into an intimate dining space for Scott Silven's sold-out run of At the Illustionist's Table.

Memorial Auditorium Memorial Auditorium, one of Stanford's oldest performance venues, continues to be the primary space to present large scale works that require a traditional proscenium stage. At 1,700 seats, it is the only space on campus that can accommodate the incoming freshman class. In the 2018-19 season, the space hosted a select number of our dance and jazz performances. This kicked off in October

with Honji Wang, Sébastien Ramirez, and Eva Stone in the North American premiere of Dystopian Dream, which was co-commissioned by Stanford Live. Grammy-winning vocalist Gregory Porter took the stage in December for a holiday celebration of the life and music of Nat King Cole, and Israel’s renowned Batsheva Dance Company performed its latest work, Venezuela, to a near sold-out crowd in March.

Artist Residencies Artist residencies provided an opportunity to forge deeper connections between visiting artists and the Stanford community. The season commenced with a visit from Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JALCO). The residency opened with a conversation between Marsalis and Stanford Professor of Education Adam Banks, which touched on music, language, New Orleans, and politics. Later that week, JALCO performed a program exploring the life and work of Thelonious Monk for two 10

sold-out K-12 student audiences. The next evening they wowed the Bing audience with a delightful performance of Marsalis’ work Spaces, which featured dancers Lil Buck, Ron Myles, and Jared Grimes. Members of JALCO also led a workshop for teachers and visited local schools to mentor students as well. Later in the season, playwright Inua Ellams and composer/producer Nitin Sawhney were invited to participate in more expansive residences as part of the inaugural Stanford Presidential Residencies

on the Future of the Arts. Ellams came to campus a month ahead of his breakout play Barber Shop Chronicles and engaged in writing workshops and dialogue with Stanford creative writing students and with high school students at East Palo Alto Academy. This visit, fittingly enough, coincided with Thump-Off Thursday, a regular pop-up barbershop at Ujamaa House, the student residence on campus with an academic focus on the African diaspora, where Ellams also participated in a panel discussion with students. In addition to Dystopian Dream at Memorial Auditorium in October, Nitin Sawhney also engaged with several units on campus including the Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC), Center for Computer Research

in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), Film and Media Studies, and the residential learning program ITALIC. The SLAC visit resulted in a collaboration with scientists at the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology. Kavli scientists provided a series of short films on dark matter and ionizing gas that inspired new scores by Nitin. These works became the centerpiece for an arts and technology showcase concert at Bing in April 2019. The experience of having artists engage in their creative processes on campus and share their work with the Stanford community has proved enriching and energizing. We look forward to integrating in-depth artist residencies into Stanford Live’s programs next season and beyond.

Student Collaborations: Stanford Concert Network & Beyond We deepened our relationship with the student-run Stanford Concert Network (SCN), integrating SCN with the Frost reopening and our Studio series. We expanded our role in Frost Fest, an annual student-focused music festival, and guided the SCN students through the booking, advancing, and production process. With mentorship from Stanford Live staff, SCN presented a series of cabaret shows in the Bing Studio, pairing touring artists with student opening acts. SCN and Stanford Live also collaborated 12

with the Stanford Ethiopian and Eritrean Student Association (SEESA) to present a sold-out performance by EthiopianAmerican artist Berhana. Stanford Live began an additional collaboration with the Stanford American Indian Organization (SAIO), co-presenting indigenous rapper Dioganhdih in the Bing Studio. We are planning to expand both our SAIO and SCN partnerships in the coming year with a series of student-curated cabarets.

Stand Up Comedy This past season, Stanford Live and Stand Up, D (pronounced stand up comma-dee) cohosted a four-part series of comedy events in the Bing Studio. Olivia Barbulescu, president of Stand Up, D, hosted all four performances with comedians Jenny Zigrino, Adam Cayton-Holland, Gina

Brillon, and Nick Thune. At each performance, a different student opened for the headliner, giving them the chance to practice in front of professional comedians, their fellow students, and the Stanford community.

"As host, it was as if I had an exclusive behindthe-scenes pass to the show.... Backstage, Jack and I spent time with Zigrino, exchanging fun stories over snacks, and getting advice on how to be better comedians. This was thrilling for me as I have loved watching Zigrino on Conan O’Brien, TBS, and MTV Fox." —Olivia Barbulescu (Class of '19) on her experience with comedian Jenny Zigrino Photos (clockwise from bottom left): Student Jack Greenberg opening for Jenny Zigrino; Student Olivia Barbulescu hosting a comedy night; A full house in the Bing Studio for comedian Adam Cayton-Holland

K-12 Teacher Programs Our education programs took a giant step forward with our first-ever teacher conference, Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and the Arts, in January 2019. Local and national arts education leaders inspired 115 educators in a day of challenging and joyful workshops and conversations. Approximately 44% of attendees were new to Stanford Live, coming from throughout the Bay

14

Area, and the conference drew coverage from the San Francisco Chronicle. The Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) in the Graduate School of Education joined us as a co-presenter. Altogether, the day set a new standard for our K-12 programs and raised them to a more valued place in the Bay Area's arts education ecosystem.

K-12 Matinees Our student matinees introduced renowned artists and multiple art forms to area students, including Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, operatic greats Eric Owens and Lawrence Brownlee, and Grammy-nominated children’s hip-hop group Alphabet Rockers. We emphasized access to arts learning with ticket and bus donations for Title 1 schools. Some of the Bay Area’s leading teaching artists expanded teachers’ classroom resources

through the training offered in our free workshops. Our growing Artists-in-Schools programs in the Ravenswood City School District in East Palo Alto included 65 classroom visits and performances with teaching artists Quinteto Latino. We expanded an innovative program element in which guest composer Jesus Plascencia wrote new works for students, guided by their input, to play alongside professional parts for Quinteto Latino.

“I really enjoyed the singing, the dancing, the little story they told. I am glad that other people at the concert enjoyed it too. The singers were so kind, helpful and sweet. We had a lot of fun at the field trip.” —4th grade student attending our March 2019 matinee with the Alphabet Rockers
