Our programs are available online and in person, during the summer and year-round, and feature broad exploration or intense study in a single subject. The choice is yours. Our students are intellectually adventurous, highly motivated, and passionate in their desire to come together and amplify their learning. With participation from every state and over 60 countries, the programs draw from the best and the brightest around the world. Summer Institutes MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM The Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes Middle School Program consists of three, twoweek residential sessions for students in grades 6 and 7 (ages 11 – 13). This program provides a customized experience for students who are passionate about learning and want to enrich their academic development. Students participate in one of six intensive courses, each designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. The academic program is enhanced by social, cultural, and recreational activities that encourage fun while learning, and learning while having fun. Courses include Computer Programming, Creative Writing, Earth Sciences, Expository Writing, Mathematics, and Physical Science.

Summer Institutes HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM The Summer Institutes are intensive residential academic programs that allow students to study a single subject for three or four weeks with instructors and peers who share their talents, passions, and interests. Courses in areas ranging from Business to Bioscience, Particle Physics to Political Science, and Creative Writing to Cosmology are customized to give students deep exposure and hands on experience. Two new courses for 2014 are Decision Leadership and Negotiation which will balance analytic rigor through decision analysis and game theory, with behavioral insights through psychology, negotiation, and leadership; and Computer Simulations and Interactive Media which will introduce students to the concepts of app development, game design, and artificial intelligence through basic programming and mathematics.

Youth Orchestra The Stanford Youth Orchestra brings the finest young musicians from around the world to participate in a three-week intensive orchestral and academic program. Bringing together world-renowned faculty instructors, the Stanford Youth Orchestra provides participants with exceptional orchestral training in the new state-of-the-art Bing Concert Hall, and includes academic workshops in composition, music theory, musicology, and technology. Students can choose between residential or commuting options.

Mathematics Camp [SUMaC] SUMaC welcomes an elite group of talented current 10th and 11th graders from around the world for intensive study in advanced mathematics. SUMaC leads students on a journey in advanced mathematics through lectures, guided research, and group problem solving. Living in a residential social environment centered on mathematics, students explore current lines of mathematical research, the historical development of important areas of mathematics, and applications across scientific disciplines.

Humanities Institute The Summer Humanities Institute is a three-week residential program where rising high school juniors and seniors explore the big questions at the heart of the humanities in seminars led by distinguished Stanford professors. Students will spend the first two weeks intensively studying and researching a topic in history or philosophy, attending daily lectures by the faculty members, and participating in group discussions and activities in the afternoon. During their third week, students work closely with their professors, graduate students, and writing mentors to produce original research projects.

Youth Science Program Stanford Medical Youth Science Program offers a five-week medical summer Residential Program for low-income and under-represented minority students from select counties in Northern and Central California. Twenty-four students are admitted annually and they work closely with Stanford faculty, staff, and students.

Summer College Stanford’s Summer College is an academically selective program that provides high-achieving high school students access to undergraduate education at one of America’s most respected universities. Summer College runs eight-weeks and provides academic, social, and intellectual opportunities not found in a high school classroom. Summer College students enroll as visiting undergraduate students in Stanford’s Summer Quarter and take the same courses as Stanford undergraduate students. Summer College students interact with peers from across the U.S. and around the world, and may participate in a fully array of unique co-curricular and recreational activities available on campus and in the culturally rich San Francisco Bay Area.

Summer College Academy Summer College Academy is an innovative approach to university-level coursework. Exceptional high school students will have the opportunity to take one of a number of intensive undergraduate-level courses, three to four weeks of which will be in Stanford PreCollegiate Studies’ signature online synchronous seminar environment, followed by three weeks of coursework in residence on Stanford’s campus—all while earning Stanford University Continuing Studies credit and a Continuing Studies transcript.

Online High School The Stanford Online High School (OHS) is an independent school for academically talented and motivated students in grades 7 – 12. Our online instruction includes live, synchronous seminars on a college-style class schedule, which encourages independence, discipline, and strong time-management skills. The varied needs, interests, and exceptional talents of our students are accommodated by the flexibility of Stanford OHS enrollment options, which include full-time, part-time, and single course enrollment. Students are supported by counselors, college counselors and academic advisors. Beyond the online classroom, students engage in a rich array of extra-curricular student-led clubs, homeroom, and assemblies. A two-week intensive residential summer program at Stanford University presents students with further opportunity to connect with each other and their instructors.

Literary Salons
Literary salons are book clubs in which elementary and middle school students delve into a classic, a contemporary favorite, or a collection of poems they have always wanted to read, with peers who share their reading interests. Guided by an instructor, students discover the full depths of these amazing works of literature. Recent texts have included Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” and “Romeo and Juliet” and William Golding’s Lord of the Flies.

Math Circle The Stanford Math Circle offers quarter-long sessions for local, elementary-, middle-, and high-school students who are interested in math. Math circles are weekly gatherings of students working on problems involving complex and advanced mathematical topics, guided by mathematicians and educators. The weekly meetings take place on Thursdays on Stanford University’s campus.

Science Conference Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies will hold its first Science Conference for high school students, March 14 – 16, 2014. The conference aims to highlight current research from the perspective of Stanford scholars as well as the incredible work being done in science by young scholars across the country. Goals of the conference are to enhance and sustain student interest in science, and promote the importance of scientific exploration by all students, regardless of academic and socio-economic status.

Each program requires a unique application as the criteria for admittance is different. We want to find the students that are the most qualified as well as the most passionate about their subject matter. Test scores are required for some but not all programs.
