SCHOOL TALK

By Joanie Smith

FUNIUMFUNDO

WHY IS THIS SCHOOL AMAZING?

Funimfundo (which means seeking knowledge) is a community pre-school established in 2004. We are part of the Die Kop informal settlement just outside Stanford in the Western Cape, South Africa. Funimfundo provides quality pre-school education for around 50 children from the age of three to Grade R. We teach the children in their home language, IsiXhosa, and all learning is aimed at supporting the physical and social development of the child. Our aim is to give them the best start for the rest of their journey into life. The community plays an important role in the life of the school. Parents and community leaders are the main decision-makers and the school works with families and parents to link what happens at home and at school together. Our community is extremely proud of our school. What do we learn? Our children learn about the human body, emotions, animals, seasons, transport, the weather, and how to behave with others and themselves. They learn how to wash and dress themselves and how to work in groups. And most importantly, they learn to be confident and proud.

WHAT ARE WE CELEBRATING?

Our new van! After years of battling to keep our old school transport on the road, we now have a brand new school minibus. The children can now ride in comfort and safety to and from school. Easter Egg Hunt As happens every year, Uli Joost came with Easter eggs, hid the eggs and the hunt started. It's always such a pleasure to see the surprise on the children's faces when they realise that there's chocolate in the bushes. Christmas party The children had a fabulous party. There was a wide range of cakes and sweet goodies that they aren't normally allowed at school. They made the Christmas hats and the decorations and Father Christmas was a screech. A fun time was had by all. Graduation Day 2017 In December, 10 Grade R learners graduated and are now on their way to Grade 1. Parents organise the celebration, sing, take photos and celebrate. This is always a very proud moment for parents and the community. Our teachers Digital literacy was the theme of the year - and will also be for 2018. The teachers were given tablets and a new high-speed Internet connection was installed at the school. Nopendulo Golela successfully passed the first year of her Level 4 Teacher Training qualification.

CREATIVE WORKS

provides occupational therapy services for the school, including classroom interventions, creative sessions for the Grade R class and individual sessions for children. The main aim is for Grade R learners to be ready for the Grade 1 school environment when they leave Funiumfundo. The therapist works closely with the teachers to identify delays in development, problems with motor functions and social and emotional issues. She also helps the teachers find the best ways of dealing with these. Activities working with paper machĂŠ, movement games, sensory mazes, blind tasting, make- believe and art. Plans for the future The plan for the future is to host regular workshops for parents to help them find the right tools and resources they need to support their children's development at home, and to know what to do with them.

WHAT'S COMING READ ALOUD!

A community-based workshop bringing parents, friends, families and children together to enjoy the experience of sharing books and stories. Thursday February 01, 2018, is International Read Aloud day. parent workshops Creative works will continue to help us build relationships between the school and the community by holding more regular workshops with the parents. sports coaching Grootbos foundation are starting a sports coaching programme at the school. They will come regularly every Friday. early learning health support A German NGO is supporting the teachers build an understanding of the specific health needs of children at this stage of learning. upgrading school playground We plan to upgrade the equipment in the school playground. digital literacy Our childrens' future is digital. We have started regular digital literacy classes with the teachers to help them gain the skills they need to bring digital technology into the classroom.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

We would not be here today if it wasn't for the generous support we have had over the years. Many kind and caring individuals and groups have donated both time and money to make sure this fantastic community project continues to thrive and serve its future generations. TIME and ENERGY We always welcome your support. If you think you would like to contribute in some way, please don't hestiate to contact us. And if you are short of ideas, then just donate some of the everyday items we use at the school. Every little helps. we always need books, childrens' paint, art materials, paper, stationary, crayons, toys and don't forget fresh vegetables and food, cleaning products, toilet paper, soap and compost. NATURE TALK de Saint Exupery, The Little Prince “Let every fox take care of his own tail.” – Italian “What the lion cannot manage to do the fox can.” – German (with apologies to Panthera) “The early bird gets the worm, and the early fox gets the bird.” — Matshona Dhliwayo

Referring to a person as a fox is used most commonly for those (i) regarded as being of a type characterised by wide-ranging knowledge and an adherence to no particular viewpoint or philosophy, or (ii) for a woman, who is attractive, esp. sexually attractive. But now it is time that I return to the known facts about these elusive creatures, largely unnoticed by us human dwellers of the Overberg. It is my honour to introduce to you our local foxes - the Cape Fox and the Bat-Eared Fox. The Cape fox (Vulpes chama) or silver-backed fox is a small fox (max. 5kg) native to southern Africa. It has black or silver gray fur with light yellow sides and belly. The tip of its tail is always black. The Cape fox is nocturnal and most active just before dawn or after

by Kirsten Sima Neke

For as long as I can remember I have been captivated by foxes. Each drive home to our farm in the Sondagskloof is an opportunity to spot a fox. My 7 year old daughter and I are on constant alert, despite our having seen them only a handful of times; a pair with their 2 kits play-pouncing next to the road in the twilight, a couple trotting into the distance over a well-grazed field their black-tipped tails at low mast, three young foxes nosing out of their roadside burrow. Sadly, the remaining sightings were as ex-foxes, road-kill between the farm and Stanford. Most miserably a pair, pancaked side-by-side. Foxes, for the most part, mate for life. I consoled myself that at least they went to heaven together. Despite sighing happily for this Rivertalk opportunity to don my Dr Ecology cap, I could not prevent a slight stray from the safe facts about foxes. I was intrigued to discover an abundance of wonderful quotes, revealing clearly a long-lasting fascination for these mysterious and nonchalant creatures. “Foxes were dreaded animals. They were not large or fierce, like the bears and tigers that roamed the mountains, but they were known to be fiendishly clever. Some people even believed that foxes possessed evil magic. It was said that a fox could lure a man to his doom, tricking him into coming to its den, where somehow he would be fed to its offspring —Linda Sue Park, A Single Shard Many quotes hold strong political insights, valuable perhaps at this time of crazy politics. I will share with you just a drop in the dam of villainously fox-y quotes. “Never trust a fox. Looks like a dog, behaves like a cat.” — Erin Hunter, Into the Wild “I am sometimes a fox and sometimes a lion. The whole secret of government lies in knowing when to be the one or the other.” – Napoleon Bonaparte “An election is coming: Universal peace is declared and the foxes have a sincere interest in prolonging the lives of the poultry.” – George Eliot “Men have forgotten this truth,” said the fox. “But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.” – Antoine

dusk. During the day, it shelters in underground burrows or dense thickets. They are solitary creatures, and although they form mated pairs, the males and females are often found alone, tending to forage separately. Although a normally silent, the Cape fox may communicate with soft calls, whines or chirps or when alarmed with a loud bark. If pushed to aggression, they may growl and spit at its attacker. To show its excitement, the fox lifts its tail, the height of the tail indicating the degree of excitement. Typical of most canid species, Cape foxes mate for life. Both parents care for the young, with the male also providing for the female during the first two weeks. Opportunistic omnivores, their preference is for invertebrates and small mammals. They have been observed to hunt and eat reptiles, rodents, spiders, birds, and young hares. They will also eat eggs, beetle larvae, and carrion, as well as most insects or fruits. The Cape fox is thought to help regulate populations of small mammals and particularly rodents. Life expectancy is six years to 10 years. Predators include hawks and owls, caracal, leopard, hyena, and lion. A large number are killed on the road by vehicles. They succumb to diseases such as rabies and canine distemper, road kill and in more recent times have become victims of traps. Many are hunted and persecuted as vermin, mistaken for jackals and held responsible for livestock losses. Cape foxes have been reported to be able to kill lambs up to three months of age, although this is a rare occurrence. About 2,500 individuals are killed yearly, approximately 16% of the total Cape fox population. Nonetheless, this fox is not regarded as a threatened species. TO BE CONTINUED

STRAIGHT TALK

SHOWBIZ ? I do not remember when I first heard the quote “Politics is show business for the ugly”. This is reflected not only on politicians but more so the antics that take place in Hollywood. Every year in January / February we are inundated by the programmes on TV from that mutual admiration society parading on the red carpet at the awards presentations of the OSCARS , GRAMMIES and BAFTAS by the actors, artists and performers. I recall last year when the film LA LA LAND almost picked up the top prize when the auditors erroneously placed the winning card in the wrong envelope! The error was corrected immediately much to the embarrassment of the convenors. All this show business hype was brought to the

by Patrick Campbell

attention of Stanford's local Film Society whereupon the movie was subsequently screened. I was disappointed due perhaps to a dubious generation gap but, I was reliably informed, some, not all other movie buffs, concurred and felt somewhat conned. The other great show business spectacle in the USA is the State of the Union speech by its President. This American milestone is even more of a farce with TRUMP at the helm. I notice that this Narcissist not only acknowledges the applause by the Republicans but claps himself, while the Democrats sit on their hands. In the RSA our MPs in Parliament are often viewed emulating this non-cross-party expression and this display is even more theatrical when the EFF walk out.

The English Premier Soccer League also has a show business slant with adoring spectators becoming hysterical when a goal is scored and the striker runs to the stand to receive the applause on his knees while his team mates maul and hug him. To me it’s like appraising a fish for swimming after all the act of scoring goals is what a footballer is meant to do. The Romans had a definition for this behaviour “panem et circenses” ( bread and games) to keep the mob contented. Today we still have the so-called 'circus' but the bread is now replaced by a COKE or is it a BIG MAC?

TOURISM TALK by Phil Murray

Rainfall and Reignfall What a summer it was! From unexpected thunder storms, the likes of which are usually reserved for the Highveld, to the unexpected resignation of Jacob Zuma, our boundless South African spirit leaves us optimistic for what March may bring. We don’t usually notice an immediate tilt away from summer in March, but it feels like anything can happen this year. We have our fingers crossed for more reliable rainfall, and more reliable leadership in our province and our beloved country. Stanford has felt the tightening hold of the drought. This wetland village, reclining on the banks of the Klein River, and sitting on top of a beautifully free-flowing spring which gurgles and trickles along the village leivoor, is tied in solidarity with Cape Town. When visitors cancel their Cape Town holidays, this affects Stanford. Stanford guest houses have already reported that some international guests have

changed flights so that they no longer visit the Western Cape at all. The message from Wesgro is clear: Don’t cancel events, continue to welcome guests and visitors, and do everything necessary to keep business operating as usual. The Cape Whale Coast and Stanford is just a hop and a skip from water-stricken Cape Town and makes a superb alternative with our ocean, rivers, mountains, wine routes, Fynbos, conservation biospheres, heritage and great food. Stanford is ready, and your heart will sing with the beauty of this little emerald on the Cape Whale Coast. Did you miss the Stanford River Festival last year? We are delighted that this outdoor event which saw a multitude of boats and people of all ages, shapes and sizes, enjoying paddling on the Klein River takes place on the weekend of 16-18 March. Social sunset paddles and

friendly pursuit races fill the weekend, and the main events take place from the riverfront at the bottom of King Street on Saturday, 17 March. See you there! LIVING SOUNDTRACK By Andrew Herriot

After four years in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, it was time to say farewell to the country, to the peoples, to our friends many of whom were Scottish due to the fact that musically I had developed a strong relationship with numerous citizens who had warm thoughts about the Scots and their contribution to the cultural aspects of living abroad while preserving where possible the musical aspects of Scotland. I had also made a number of friends in the world of jazz as a result of regular opportunities to meet and play with other musicians often when the Scots would gather informally for Ceilidhs or indeed formally when we met to revere our National Bard Robert Burns and also acknowledge our annual St Andrew's Day. There was always a reason to attire ourselves in our national dress just as my Arabic colleague would dress in their national dress when they would join us on these occasions. Coming to SA meant meeting those locals in Stanford who not only had an interest in Scottish matters and its familiar celebrations but had strong interests in music and easy listening songs and tunes which could be interpreted as light jazz. I found myself easily able to fit into individualistic music moods such as forming a band, planning for stage entertainments, charity functions and getting to know many of the performers (musicians, actors and vocalists)

whose interests in jazz and easy-listening music were closely aligned to my focus. It did not take long to become part of the Stanford Players, form an ensemble which eventually became known as the JazzFordians and take to the road as a Soiree group entertaining aficionados in venues such as restaurants, secure homes, nature reserves and wine farms and other eclectic venues that would attract a listening audience who willingly were happy to contribute to a meaningful charity. My journey across many lands was nearing an end as retirement began to loom ahead. Music was to become a huge part of my daily diet. There was time available to plan, give directions to musical ventures, accept challenges and move forward measure for measure, embracing the overall constancy of music and my Life Soundtrack. Time for new visions (Shows/Gigs/Soirees).

BOB (ARTHUR ROBERT) HADLEY 28.08.42 – 05.02.2018 We moved to Stanford in June 2012 and enjoyed some wonderful happy times before Bob became ill. Bob was an amazing man – he loved gardening and installed a large black pipe that goes around our garden carrying rainwater into three tanks, with an overflow into the dam nextdoor. He also loved cooking – when I asked if I could help he used to say “just stand in the corner and look pretty”. Woodwork was another passion of his, with wonderful tools at hand, he made all my easles. He was passionate about steam trains and was a member of the Umgeni Steam Railway. A DVD that he filmed years ago about the railway is still bringing in money. He used to ‘chase’ trains, waiting for them at bridges, with his camera for that perfect shot as the trains came puffing through the tunnels. I shall miss him, I hope that he is happily riding on a steam train somewhere. Thank you to the Villagers of Stanford for being so caring and supportive to me. It is much appreciated. I would also like to thank Esme Hermanus and Charmaine Conradie for being such wonderful carers and for looking after Bob so well. Sometimes beyond the call of duty. Nicky Ross
