MAGAZINE EDITOR’S CHOICE 2022AUGUST

MAGAZINE Mustang enthusiasts have asked for a magazine that has no ads, no sales pitches, and no bogus “fillers” to eat up space. They have asked for a magazine that is free, easy to access, and nothing but focused on Mustang pictures and content. They have asked for a magazine produced and written by Mustang owners. They have asked for a magazine that highlights the daily drivers and the average Mustang that is driven and is not a trailer queen. They have asked for the chance to one day have their ride, their group, their club, or their cause to be recognized in print or online. It is our absolute pleasure to meet these standards and to give you STANG Magazine. We hope that both our message and our image will be seen in every Mustang community out there. Thank you Mustang fans and enjoy your ride!

LAKE ERIE CRUISE AND SHOW Lake Erie Mustang Owners Club of Erie Pennsylvania (LEMOC) was gracious enough to host STANG Magazine for their car show this year. Man was it a blast! I had arrived earlier than the rest of the STANG Crew, so I missed the STANG stampede from Harrisburg to Erie, Pennsylvania. I heard from the stampede that it was a beautiful drive. Lots of country scenery and beautiful forestry for a relaxing cruise. Since I had arrived early into town, I was able to explore the town and all the badass stuff that was there. One thing that was a warm welcome to Erie, is that the people of Erie are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. The first thing I did was check out the local witchcraft store Cauldron & Thorne. The place was amazing with lots of cool stuff, a perfect place for a Halloween and Horror lover as myself. The owners

As we begin our journey into the descent of madness that is my mind and the crazy antics of my life, I would like to first introduce myself. My name is TJ, blah blah blah, that sums it up and all you need to know. Whew… got past the CRAP no one cares about! Now for the good stuff. Mustang culture is one that is very unique and brings together people from all walks of life. One thing is for sure though, the STANG Mag crew isn’t your typical crew. We are a bunch of weirdos, oddballs, and out casts. We party hard and live by our ride or die motto and have adventures like no other. From partying in various spots all over the U.S., to touring some of America’s most haunted sites, to having my ass spanked by a beautiful Latina in Las Vegas in front of a restaurant packed full of guests (and owning it), it’s never a dull moment! All I can say is... strap in, rev the shit out of your motor, and let’s go!

of the place were extremely friendly and were also car enthusiasts. I showed off my Mustang and the owner was gracious enough to show me his twin turbo Mercedes AMG and Winnebago, which were beasts and pretty badass rides. I asked about cool spooky spots locally to check out, and the owner recommended Erie Cemetery, which contains a vampire crypt. If you know me then you know as soon as he said vampire crypt, I hauled ass straight to the cemetery. Local legend is that a vampire was buried inside the crypt and it was sealed off to prevent the vampire from escaping. The moss-covered crypt only has a V engraved on it with no other markings. Once I got to Erie Cemetery, I was greeted by beautiful tombstones and crypts Onceeverywhere.Ifound the vampire crypt, it was pretty cool. It is located on the side of a hill, just standing by itself. Upon closer look, there were numerous scratches on the metal door of the crypt entrance. Was it the

vampires’ ghouls trying to get the vampire out? Who knows but it definitely adds to the legend. Now the odd part was, when I visited the other crypts, some crypts had an outside door covering an inner door. As I walked up to the vampire crypt, it was silent until I got right up to the outer door where I could hear flies just buzzing around and not like 1 or 2, we are talking about a whole posse of them in the two-foot space between the outer door and inner door. The odd part was there was no reason for them to be there, no trash or food, and all of the crypts were well Afterwards, maintained.we attended the BBQ which Lake Erie Mustang Owners Club hosted. They were very welcoming and the food was amazing. There were freshly made hamburgers, various sides, and of course my favorite deserts. Oh man, the cookies and cake were phenomenal. We sat and hung out all afternoon just talking about our love for Mustangs and shooting the shit. After the BBQ, we went to

Rum Runners for dinner and drinks, which was next to the lake and checked out the Bicentennial Tower which was lit up with different colors at night. The next day at the car show was fun. There were a lot of classic Mustangs and new Mustangs as well. The people at the car show were very friendly and welcoming. The show was a blast and several of our members won awards at the car show. At the end of the car show, members of Lake Erie Mustang Owners Club all lined up at the exit of the show and cheered all the Mustangs on as they were leaving the show. It was a sight to behold and I am truly humbled to be witness to this tradition. I highly recommended that anyone in the area to check out the Lake Erie Owners Mustang Club car show. The best part of all, the show benefits Veterans and the local community. I want to give a huge shout out to Dan Taino and Nicole Harcourt, who made this happen and giving us a place to enjoy a fun filled weekend. Thank you so much guys!

SINGHRANDY ALEXIA– 2017 FORD MUSTANG GT Along this journey it’s been an interesting one. As anyone who mods a car knows, it has its ups and downs and of course great people and some you never wish you met. But In the end, you build your vision and your creation. Shortly after I bought Alexia, I met a great group of guys from a car club called Established. They talked me into it and helping installing my air ride, then followed the carbon interior, then of course the wrap and after a long time, the wheels. I also added a starlight headliner. But at the end of the day I wouldn’t have it any other way. Thanks to Established, JWP Automotive, Ford Hub MN, Driven, and many others for the help with this journey. Stayed tuned because a whole different look and supercharger are coming sooner than you think!

HALLSTEVE BECKY– 1992 GT I NAMED THE CAR AFTER MY LATE SISTER BECKY WHO ALWAYS TOLD ME TO CHASE MY DREAMS. THE CAR IS A CONSTANT REMINDER THAT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! This 1992 Mustang GT is formerly a triple white car that has been wrapped in diamond blue and silver anthracite. Wheels are staggered 17 x 9 and 17 x 10 SVE 10th Anniversary wheels. The car is equipped with a 331 stroker trick flow top end and too much other stuff to list. It has been converted to a manual transmission from an automatic. The suspension is a combination between Maximum Motorsports and Stifflers, the car was lowered 2” all around with the Eibach pro kit, and it also has two way adjustable Koni shocks. It is equipped with a custom Arc audio sound system. The most rewarding part of the car has been watching the transformation of it over the last five years. Thanks to a few buddies, we have the car looking and running great. My small team consists of myself, Richard Tripp with mechanicals, Neil Smith on the electrical, Ryan Gochenouer on the exhaust, Andrew Staton of S&H Performance Coatings for the cerakote on the engine components, Curtis Peterson of Northland

Now I enjoy the car by going to cruise ins and car shows all over the state of Iowa. I spend my time at the shows handing out Hot Wheels to the kids. I mean let’s face it, they are the future of the sport. I also enjoy talking to the people at the shows and hearing their stories and sharing information I’ve learned along the way. Although I’m not totally done with the car, it sure is fun. I named the car after my late sister Becky who always told me to chase my dreams. The car is a constant reminder that anything is possible!

BRUCE & BARB LEHNEN DA BOSS–1970 BOSS 302 DA BOSS IS LIKE HAVING AN OLD FRIEND BACK IN MY LIFE TO SHARE WITH MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

I’m not a nickname kinda guy, but this is “Da Boss”, a 1970 Mustang Boss 302. The name is based on a refrigerator magnet I was given by my brother shortly after buying the car in 1975. It’s still on my toolbox. Purchased with faded gray paint, a 351C 2V, snow tires, Thrush side pipes, long shackles with a chunk of 2” angle iron welded between with a trailer hitch ball. That lasted about a day. After restoring its dignity, it was used as a daily driver and drag raced with a 351C 4V. We just about cut it for a cage and tubs, but found a partially finished car and pushed this into the “garage that time forgot”. I rounded up a Boss 302 and a bunch of new parts in the late 70s with intentions on freshening it up. Then adult stuff got in the way. My NOS parts are actually OOS (Old Old Stock). I had no illusions of making it numbers matching, the damage was done long before my time, but the body and interior were really nice. We sold out of drag racing, but I kept everything associated with the Da NowBoss.retired and in my second adolescent stage, it was time. With the skills of a few talented friends, Da Boss went from a bare shell and a garage full of parts to a complete, ready for fun Boss 302. I was a glorified purchasing agent and parts chaser, they had the skills. The five month project was completed in January 2020 with a near OE body in the original Medium Lime Metallic with a Boss 302 stealth restomod

DA BOSS–1970 BOSS 302 drivetrain. The focus was to make it look like the good old days but much better. We took pains to not highlight many of the mods. The Boss 302 dyno runs showed 420 HP. Underneath includes Wilwood brakes, Borgeson power steering, OE sway bars and Lakewood slapper bars with KYB shocks. The OE Toploader and 3.91 rear gear provide big grins and tire smoke. The original AM radio with R&B Vintage Radio touches, FPA headers and MRT exhaust provide “music”.

Activities to date include some award type shows, casual shows and cruises. I was surprised by being awarded trophies right away. In fact, the first show folks had to find me the day after to deliver the trophy. At one show we were fooling around with friends and our daughter came into the pub with a giant trophy. She kept hearing my name and checked it out, only to be given the trophy and photo handshake. The awards are humbling and gratifying and underscore the skills of my friends. Friendships have been rekindled with many of the muscle car folks I knew in the 70s and 80s and with the Iowa Mustangs Unstabled group. Da Boss is like having an old friend back in my life to share with my family and friends.

WHEN I WAS FIVE YEARS OLD, I FELL IN LOVE WITH A CAR - THE MACH 5 FROM SPEED RACER. When I was five years old, I fell in love with a car - the Mach 5 from Speed Racer. I still love the Mach 5. However, when I was in high school I fell madly in love with a car I could actually hope to buy - the 1970 Mustang Coupe. Yeah, I know everyone else prefers the Fastback but not me! It took me a few years to find my car but I finally did on Aug 1, 1989. I put a deposit on her and then paid her off the 4th and drove her home.

Ironically, I had looked at another one the same day and walked away because it was too expensive and only had a six cylinder engine. As I walked away, I said “Well I didn’t even like the color.” That statement sealed my fate because sure enough, that car was Medium Lime Metallic. My car very quickly told me her name. Pumpkinhead, after the demon in the movie of the same name from 1988. She either likes you or she doesn’t. I don’t care to ever be the person she doesn’t like. I daily drove her for several years, but eventually stabled her.

three years after she decided to spring a transmission leak the day the covered transport came to pick her up. Eventually we did a road trip to bring her down here. Sadly, her time on salt-covered roads up north caused serious rust issues, so in 2020 I had her restored at Mac Enterprises in Palm Bay, FL. Now that she’s back on the road, I enjoy cruising, taking her to car shows, and am working through my bucket list: win at least one trophy (done), drive on the track at Daytona or Sebring (done), and drive Tail of the Dragon (still to go). Maybe I need to add a cross-country drive of Route 66? Who knows, but I look forward to every minute driving her! Interesting info about Pumpkinhead is that she has numbers matching 351C with FMX transmission, factory air, power steering, power front disc brakes, and is Medium Lime Metallic.

SAINT–1993 LX I got into Mustangs while waiting for a special order 1999 WS6 Trans Am. As a year went by without a car, I bought a 97 Cobra and about one week into owning it, I cancelled the Trans Am order and spent the next ten years building that Cobra into a monster only to have it stolen and totaled. This current Mustang that I own was built with one idea. Every time I drove a Fox, I hated something about it. I wanted to prove to myself it wasn’t the car’s fault. A good friend of mine bought the car with a different turbo motor in it and he then gave me the car as payment to put the turbo motor into his 1988 T-top. I started with a factory black interior with Corbeau seats and I built the motor with left over parts from all my friends’ builds. The brakes are all new Power Stop AS A YEAR WENT BY WITHOUT A CAR, I BOUGHT A 97 COBRA AND ABOUT ONE WEEK INTO OWNING IT, I CANCELLED THE TRANS AM ORDER AND SPENT THE NEXT TEN YEARS BUILDING THAT COBRA INTO A MONSTER ONLY TO HAVE IT STOLEN AND TOTALED.

ROBERTOSTEPHEN THE ANIMAL–2013 BOSS 302 I have always been a Ford fan from an early age. My first car was a 1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7. Short ly after, I discovered my first Mustang at 18. I have owned several ‘69 Mustangs through my life. I went without a Mustang for 20 years but always gravitated toward them. Then I found “The Animal” and it was time to get a Mustang again. After test driving the car, I have not stopped driving it. Ford did a great job recreating the Boss and now it is a modern classic. Now that I have more time, I am slowly getting into local car shows. There is nothing like grabbing a gear, smashing the pedal to the floor, and flying down the road! Like a BOSS. This car started as an inspiration to support our Law Enforcement (thin blue line flag on roof) with a racing inspired look. It is not for everyone I know but I want ed it to be my own. All of the vinyl was meant to flow together. As a 20 year Active Duty retired Military Working Dog Handler/Trainer and now an Instructor for the Department of Homeland Security training LEO/TSA Dog Handlers and K9s, my heart is and al ways will be for our country and the men and women defending it. The “Beast” is a Cali Special but wanted to change some things that didn’t flow but also keeping a lot of its unique features. The bumper and front chin spoiler are original, however I took the horse from the grille and added a ZL1 tow hook. I also changed the original hood to a CMST see-through hood to display the Roush supercharger. The Cali spoiler was replaced with a GT 500 carbon fiber spoiler to add to the theme. On the inside, we added a forged carbon fiber steering wheel and a Barton pistol grip shifter.

MUSTANGS AT DAYTONA 2022 WAS AWESOME. IT WAS A WEEK LONG EVENT FILLED WITH LOTS OF MEET UPS, ACTIVITIES, AND FREE TIME TO DO WHATEVER YOUR HEART’S DESIRE. STANG MAG SADDLED UP ABOUT A DOZEN OF OUR FINEST MUSTANGS AND WE SET OFF FOR DAYTONA!

Half of the herd took the traditional “Ride or Die” approach and drove from Pennsylvania to Florida (meeting head on with a monsoon), while the other half took the “Party Train” approach and loaded up our steeds on the Auto Train (departing from Virginia and getting off near Orlando which is only about a 40 min drive to Daytona). Let’s just say the Auto Train did not disappoint and we were the life of the train in more ways than one! From the first day until the last, the staff of Mustangs At Daytona had a week packed full of the kind of stuff we love - cruising, breweries, night life, and of course the Daytona Track Day sponsored by yours truly. Side note - I have never seen so many people in my life waiting in the hot ass Florida heat dying to get that STANG Mag Daytona Willy Wonka event ticket. It was a sight of true die hard STANG fans and Mustang fanatics. We saw those Willy Wonkas hanging proudly on Mustangs at almost every event all week long and it brought smiles ear to ear. Aside from the amazing activities the week had a nice balance effect of free time so we could actually enjoy a vacation and see the sights and do some cool stuff not on the agenda. We had plenty of time to explore, chill out on the beach, watch a rocket launch at sunset, tour a historic lighthouse, cruise up and down the Florida coast for an impromptu photo shoot, go parasailing, feed

Mix in there some beach BBQs, Mimosas and Bumbu for breakfast every morning, following a Cherry Red Classic Mustang through the swampy jungle backwoods of Florida, and watching storms and sunsets dancing in the brightest of colors all week long, we had the perfect trip and have all agreed we will be back next year to bring more of the STANG crew.

The staff at Mustangs At Daytona set up a Meet and Greet at Saints and Sinners Destination Dayto na, hosted the Kick-Off Party at Ormond Brewery, provided a Breakfast Meet at Gary Yeoman’s Ford with a cruise that followed to Ford Garage (with escort by the Florida State Police), set up an 80s Nightlight Glow Meet at a wicked biker bar, allowed us to tour the Daytona International Raceway and be amazed at how freaking steep those turns really are, provided a catered VIP Party at a bar with an awesome balcony view next to the track, and of course invited everyone to attend the two day Mustangs At Daytona Mustang Show at Destination Daytona. From start to finish, Jeff Dixon and Nate Taylor busted their asses to make the week fun and successful. Hosting this amazing event from year to year takes tons of work and dedication and these guys deserve recognition. The best part, is that they do it for the local charities in the area and all proceeds go to help the community. In fact, these guys spend a lot of their own income just to make this event enjoyable for those that attend. We can tell you for a fact, this event is perfect for a family get away. Jeff and Nate host a very respectable and comfortable event for all Mustang enthusiasts and you will get out of it what you put into it. We highly recommend Mustangs At Daytona and we can’t wait until next year

© MAGAZINESTANG2022 “JUST

FEATURED UPCOMING EVENT SORRY. HOLD ON. I NEED LUBE. Let’s talk oil changes! How often does your oil need changed and why? We’ll start with some basics. Back in the early days of internal combustion engines, motor oil was just that – oil. When oil is cycled through a hot, running engine, it picks up dirt, debris and contaminates that will over time cause the oil to lose its lubricating properties. Some still stand by the old adage of “Every 3,000 miles or 3 months” however, with modern advances in engine and oil technology, that’s not really the case anymore. Let’s start with the oil itself – all modern motor oils are a synthetic blend. Synthetic oils do not break down as quickly as a traditional oil would and therefore they do not require to be changed as frequently. There’s also the option of a full synthetic oil, that manufacture companies claim can go 15,000 miles, but the price starts becoming an issue with this oil. Older engines, such as Ford’s original 289/302/351W/5.0L engine family used a 5-quart oil pan. The newer 5.0 Coyote engines have an oil capacity of 8.7 quarts. More oil means that it is not being cycled through the engine as frequently, therefore keeping the oil cooler and not breaking down its lubricating properties as quickly. So 5,000 to 7,000 miles for an oil change is pretty safe bet if you’re running a synthetic blend, 3,000 if you’re running “ old school” oil, or 7,000 to 10,000 if you’re running a full synthetic.
