“By the People, For the People”; 175 Years of Politics and Law in Stanly County Before Trump and Hillary, there was Van Buren and Harrison! In 1840, the United States had the highest turn out for a presidential race ever. Find out what issues were at stake and how they compare to our current election year. This exhibit also includes:
The evolution of Stanly County’s Courthouses, starting in 1841 when court was first in held in Sheriff Eben Hearne’s mother’s house The struggle African Americans and Women went through to get the right to vote
How media has changed the election process
The evolution of the voting machine in Stanly County, including the one that will be used in the 2016 presidential election
