O P E N H E A R T S. O P E N M I N D S. ANNUAL REPORT
2014-2015
DEAR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF ST. ANNE'S,
At St. Anne’s we want to dare to be great, to open the minds of students by providing a program that challenges and inspires students at every level as 21st century thinkers, future leaders, and lifelong learners. We also encourage and support teachers in their professional growth as they prepare our students for a rapidly changing world. At the same time we seek to grow open hearts by being a community that welcomes students of all backgrounds and faiths, helping every family to feel a sense of belonging at St. Anne’s. We also help students at all ages in their character development and spiritual growth as they become more aware of God’s role in their lives and their roles in community. Because of you, we have been able to further this vision. You and your generous support have made it possible to increase our funding for professional development, allowing teachers to attend workshops, participate in webinars, visit schools, and attend regional and national conferences; launch a new U.S. Services scholarship for a new student whose family has a background of military service; refurbish the upper athletic field and improve our playgrounds and plantings around the building; and add a host of new technology tools for our students and teachers. This year’s total giving, including support from foundations and the auction, was over $440,000, and our parent participation rate in the annual fund was an impressive 88%. Much of this success was the result of a great many volunteers who so ably shared the good news about St. Anne’s. As you read some of the stories in this report about our Middle School Spanish trip, our focus on scientific inquiry and discovery, and our commitment to serving others, you can easily see how this vision for St. Anne’s is getting lived out daily within our school community. When you give to the Heart, Mind and Spirit campaign, you help to make these stories come true for our students and their teachers. With deep gratitude,
Peter C. Thayer HEAD OF SCHOOL

HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR YEAR TOGETHER – GROWING THE HEART
For the first time, St. Anne’s Episcopal School students travelled to Puerto Rico where they had the opportunity to practice their Spanish language skills and experience another culture first hand.
NUESTRO VIAJE A PUERTO RICO As we stepped tentatively out of the sliding doors of the airport lobby, the muggy San Juan heat greeted us at the same time that our tour guide, Sergio, introduced himself with a hearty, “¡Hola, muchachos!” Thus began our five-day Spanish immersion trip to Puerto Rico, the first that the students of St. Anne’s have ever taken. Nineteen 7th and 8th graders waited excitedly to depart for lunch in the town of Piñones as we climbed onto the gua-gua, our shuttle bus. Over the next five days, the students traversed the island and actively experienced the landscapes, historical sites, food, music, dance, sea life, and beaches of Puerto Rico under the excellent guidance of Vamonos Tours. Each day came with a host of varied and thrilling activities: we hiked the verdant Yunque National Rainforest and swam under its refreshing waterfalls, petted live sea animals like starfish and an octopus, threw sandballs at the beach, interviewed market vendors during our scavenger hunt, and tasted delicious foods like fried codfish and empanadillas. The kids delighted most in the bioluminescent bay tour, in which we experienced the magical illumination of micro-organisms called dinoflagellates
as we splashed around in the night-time waters of Parguera’s mangrove cays. We also participated in a salsa dancing lesson at a dance studio — the students continued practicing their twirls and steps everywhere, including in our hotel lobbies and on the beach! We also had the amazing opportunity to visit a foster home called Hogar San Miguel, located in the city of Ponce, where our students spent time with the children playing basketball, sharing songs, and eating lunch. Our students demonstrated their care and compassion for these children when, even in the 95-degree heat, they were anxious to help paint the outdoor walls and gate and clean up their playground by sweeping and picking up fallen mangos. At the end of our time together, we gave them presents of crayons and other school supplies while saying our goodbyes. Our trip was not complete without celebrating one of the traveler’s thirteenth birthday on the very last night at the hotel. We sat by the poolside after dinner, ate cake, and enjoyed each others’ company as our journey came to an end. The time we spent together, the things we learned and experienced, and the people we met along the way dazzled all of us — not to mention that our Spanish skills and understanding of a different culture had taken root. I am so happy and proud of our students for such an amazing trip, and cannot wait until we return next year! Mabel Lee SPANISH TEACHER

GROWING THE MIND
Jerome Bruner will celebrate his 100th birthday this coming October. As one of the pioneers of the cognitive psychology movement, Bruner has made significant contributions to modern education. “The first objective of any act of learning, over and beyond the pleasure it may give, is that it should serve us in the future,” says Bruner. “Learning should not only take us somewhere; it should allow us later to go further more easily.” At St. Anne’s, our teachers are committed to providing an environment where this type of active learning is at the core of everything we do. Valerie White LOWER SCHOOL HEAD
DEVELOPING A LOVE OF SCIENCE The lower school science lab uses an inquiry and problem-based learning approach to scientific topics. In the “inquiry” classroom, the role of the teacher shifts from the keeper of the knowledge to facilitator. Here are some highlights from the science lab this past year: In fourth grade, students learned about the digestive system. They were able to watch videos, use interactive software, and conduct a lactose/lactase lab using milk, Lactaid, and a glucose meter. They concluded from the lab and our discussions that enzymes are a key component of our digestive health. In third grade, we learned about the heart. Students first explored heart valves through experimenting with PVC valves and pipes. The students then had to improve on the current artificial heart valve with a unique and bold design of their own. This problem has no “right” answer -- which allowed the students to use their creativity and imaginations. A number of student groups incorporated the idea of Nanorobots in their design. This became even more exciting when I shared with them a recent article in Discover magazine in which scientists were doing just that!
Second grade students had similar lab experiences studying how scientists measure the distance to the stars and scientific measurements. First graders explored how snow turns to ice in the Arctic and how animals adapt to the changing conditions of the Arctic. Not only were they able to run and “catch fish” but they understood how melting ice requires animals to adapt and they made predictions about future adaptations. Our earliest learners in Preschool, Pre-K and K explored the world of science using hands-on experiments and observations of nature. They gained an understanding of how science works and a love for the subject! Kerry Kopitsky-Wilson, LOWER SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER
FAMILY FUN WITH AN ACADEMIC TWIST According to Middle School Head Lora Byrd, “St. Anne’s Family Fun with an Academic Twist Night” was a great chance for students and their families to try different activities focused on science, technology, art and math. In this second year of the event, we invited additional students to join us, including rising 5th grade students and students who had recently been accepted to St. Anne’s. And, P.E. teacher James Hester organized students who have been studying Irish dance to do a demonstration and teach a lesson. This was a great opportunity for them to demonstrate their talents and leadership.” This past year, philanthropy helped St. Anne’s introduce new tools for learning, including Google Classroom. “Google Classroom has transformed my teaching experience and allowed for unprecedented collaboration between students and teachers, as well as nearly unlimited access to class materials at any time in any place. The ability for me to reach out to my students with feedback or direction instantaneously has been instrumental in their success this past year,” said Middle School Science Teacher Michelle Standora Wolinski. 4
GROWING THE SPIRIT
Students at St. Anne’s have always embraced community service opportunities; eighth grade graduation requirements now include 20 hours of community service and a written report with details of and reflections on their experience. Students’ activities ranged from volunteering in homeless
“Had it not been for the community service requirement I might’ve never met the people I’ve met or experienced what it’s like to be an active member of a community.” “It made me happy knowing I made a difference… I can’t wait to do it again.”
shelters to children’s sports activities, to service in orphanages and on medical teams overseas, child care, volunteering in church, dancing, educating, and much more. Below are some of the reflections from our students from the class of 2015 about what these service hours meant to them:
“Before I was involved in service, I had never witnessed the repercussions of a kind gesture… if a person dedicates his or her time, he or she can make a difference and change the world.”
“Helping those in need is important because the purpose of our time on this earth is to make things easier for one another.”
“I am no longer afraid to throw myself in situations in which I have to confidently interact with others. I know how to reach out to people and engage them.”
“It has made me learn to not take things for granted, and for that I am thankful.”
“Through service work, I learned that you don’t have to be rewarded for your actions or even noticed for them. Just the feeling of knowing you did something good, lasts a lifetime.”

GROWING COMMUNITY – LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING
On April 17th our students wowed an audience of several hundred when they sang at the Commemoration of the new Middletown Historic Landmark and dedication of two benches from the Tony Morrison Society’s “Benches by the Road” project at Middletown High School. The students had been practicing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” for weeks under the direction of music teacher and choral director Kathy DeLong, and they performed beautifully. Following an hour-long indoor program which was rich in meaning, reflection, and celebration, the Singing and Praying Band of Maryland and Delaware led the attendees out to the site of the marker and benches for the unveiling. This commemoration recognized the remarkable work of local abolitionists John Hunn, John Alston, and Samuel D. Burris to help fugitive slaves, including the Hawkins family and others, escape to freedom 170 years ago. St. Anne’s Episcopal School is very proud to have participated in this dedication and will continue to draw strength and meaning from the example of simple everyday people, both black and white, who stood on the side of right. We invite everyone in our community to make a gift to St. Anne’s in support of what they care about most – whether it be Professional Development, Financial Aid, Diversity and Inclusivity, Athletics, the Arts or a particular program. Here are some of the reasons our Parents and Grandparents give to the Heart, Mind & Spirit Fund: “The environment here is one of love and caring and generosity and giving back. The students are held to a very high standard. A standard of caring, a standard of living and being the best person you can be. I give so that every child, parent and grandparent can experience what my family has!” Rev. Cindy Koski GRANDPARENT ’06, ‘12
“The overall culture here is very nurturing and a close-knit community feel. That happens because everyone is involved: faculty, parents and students.” Erika Jorgensen PARENT
“I love the whole child approach and environment. The teachers care about the heart, mind and spirit of each child.” Emily Troutman PARENT
“My husband and I support the school because we see it as a gem. It’s very unique in its ability to provide a strong academic foundation and an importance in the arts.” Priya Dixit-Patel PARENT AND TRUSTEE
“What I love about St. Anne’s is number one the sense of community, the respect that the children learn, not just for others, but for education, for the environment, for the general community… they really do instill the values that I hold dear.” Judith Passley-DeLaine PARENT
“You are creating the leaders of the future at a school like this. We want to give them the best advantages they can have in their life and that starts with education.” Brian Ellis PARENT

The Heart, Mind & Spirit Fund is the most important appeal St. Anne’s Episcopal School makes to its community each year. With more than $440,000 going directly to programs that enhance our students’ experiences, there is not a better way to support St. Anne’s. The Heart, Mind & Spirit Fund not only provides money for the school’s daily needs, but also gives us the ability to say “yes!” when an opportunity for our students presents itself. Last year, gifts to the Fund allowed us to pursue new possibilities, including: teacher professional development, new classroom technology, field trips and improvements to our outdoor campus. The success of the 2014-2015 Heart, Mind & Spirit Fund would not have been possible without the dedicated group of volunteers who graciously agreed to make calls, answer questions, and ensure that we personally invited all of our families to participate during our five-week family campaign. Through this group’s leadership, we experienced an increase in both participation and monies raised. ANNUAL FUND CO-CHAIRS

“In the classroom, I learned lessons that will stay with me. I am not referring to just educational lessons. I gained knowledge and necessary life skills from my teachers every day. I enjoyed being challenged to mold myself into somebody who is independent and can handle any task a future teacher will propose. Also, St. Anne’s introduced community service to me. Having dedicated time towards helping people gave me feelings that I will not forget and a basis towards completing community service throughout my life.” Katie Shroyer CLASS OF 2015
“St. Anne’s is, and has always been, a safe learning environment. It is a place where you can struggle and still feel supported. It is a place where someone as short as me can play on the basketball team. Remember where we have been. We had our first book buddies in Pre-K. We learned how to read in Kindergarten. We honed our math skills in First Grade. We dressed as sharks and planets in Second. We traveled the world in Third Grade. And we led the lower school in Fourth. We started all over in Fifth, and played our first sports in Sixth Grade. In Seventh, we slept on a roof in Philadelphia. And in Eighth Grade we gathered in the gym to graduate. Remember where you have been, look forward to where you are going, and enjoy where you are.” Aubrey Heath
“The school’s founders knew how important it was for this to be a place of connection and caring; they built it into the mission, which states that St. Anne’s students “realize their potential for good as citizens of local and world communities.” That sounds awfully grand, doesn’t it? But without that grand mission, your education would lack purpose and direction. We think you don’t need to wait until you are an adult to start making a difference. Your experiences at St. Anne’s give you practice putting your skills, talents and knowledge to use in the world.” Gretchen Hurtt PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
