Welcome to StAnza 2013. Headline poets this year include the Welsh National Poet, Gillian Clarke, along with Scotland’s own Makar, Liz Lochhead, Robin Robertson reading with Ireland’s Paula Meehan, Mark Doty from the US and from Canada this year’s Poet in Residence, Erín Moure, plus poet and climber Andrew Greig, Luke Wright and the ever popular John Hegley. They will be joined by poets from Palestine, Iceland, Germany, Romania, Australia, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Norway, Belgium and Singapore, as well as from across Scotland and the UK, plus visual artists, musicians and actors. Highlight events include a European Poetry special, experimental poetry, Jacobean music, Shakespeare in Rattle & Roll, a rehearsed reading of Marmion: A Tale of Flodden Field, a re-enacting of the famous Dunbar and Kennedy Flyting, and from Ireland a dazzling opening night show of words, music and image. The festival themes for 2013 are Poetry by Design and Legacy & Place. In the former, we consider the spectrum of poetic form and how poetry is designed. Our second theme considers the particular legacy tied up in place. For the Year of Natural Scotland, poetry’s engagement with nature and the environment recurrs throughout in a range of festival events and exhibitions. In our Welsh poetry focus and line-up of Canadian poets we’ll be looking at ‘place’ in a wider context, plus to mark the bicentenary of the birth of David Livingstone, with digital technology we bring together poets from Scotland and Africa. You’ll always find a place to relax and chat in the festival’s lively and friendly hub at the Byre Theatre, and as part of StAnza's diversity, there will be plenty of lighter entertainment on the programme as well. Events range from breakfast panel discussions over coffee and pastries and lunchtime cabaret shows to late night poetry and music in the Byre Bar/Bistro. Along with a plethora of workshops, exhibitions, talks and cross-media performances, they ensure that StAnza 2013 offers something for everyone.

Workshops, Masterclasses & Slam Workshops: These are participant only events, open to 16 persons who have the opportunity to work directly with the poet. Masterclass: This is open to the public to listen or take part in discussion. Poems for inclusion must be submitted in advance. Submitting: A ticket for the masterclass must be purchased prior to submitting any work. To be considered for inclusion, send 3 poems on nature/the environment each up to 35 lines long to the contact below. Each submission must quote the reference number on the event ticket and include a note of the entrant’s name, email address and/or phone number.
