A
thousand times more rare than diamonds, tanzanite has made its mark on the jewelry world like few other stones. It was discovered in 1967 in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, western Africa. Since then, many have been romanced by this stone. A gemstone variety of the mineral zoisite, it gets its color from the presence of vanadium, a metallic element. The stone’s great allure comes from the wide range of colors that it radiates along each of its three crystallographic axis: a rich deep blue when viewed from one angle, amethystine to red from another, and various hues of brown from a third. Smaller pieces tend to have lighter tones, with lavender and periwinkle the most common. In larger sizes, the gem typically displays deeper, richer blues and purples. It is this mesmerizing saturation of color that has made tanzanite so sought after.

urning grain into the precious liquid known as Scotch whisky is by no means easy — or quick. Single-malt Scotch, arguably the most prized of the prized, requires even more attention to strict standards and regulations.

be distilled in a pot still. It may be bottled from several casks, as long as those casks all came from the same distillery. Your single-malt may be even older than the 12 or 20 years posted on the label. That’s just the youngest batch in the mix. It’s a long, exacting process, but those who dedicate themselves to its earthy, bold flavor say it’s well worth the wait.
It’s both, actually. And believe it or not, it matters a great deal to the countries that pride themselves on their whiskey . . . uh, whisky. The New York Times noticed a certain pattern in the spellings and came up with this rule of thumb: If made in a country with an “e” in its name, it’s spelled with an “e.” If it’s from a country without that letter, it’s spelled without.
So that’s why Scotland makes whisky and Ireland makes whiskey.
