Starboard, continuously pushing the boundaries of surfboard construction is our relentless quest of creating the most innovative and performancedriven surfboards. The unmatchable Active Carbon construction is still set as one of the most progressive constructions available in our sport and continues to challenge the perceptions of the surfboard market everyday. We are extremely excited about the Flex Carbon technology that is set to carve out a new industry standard by utilising both traditional and more progressive board development techniques.

Inn ovat ion:

Five years ago we introduced the first full carbon precision molded Active Stringer surfboards. With the introduction of this insane construction, we developed pioneering designs with super responsive, ridiculously light and extremely strong, cutting edge shapes. A surfboard offering that caters to any surfer on the water.

Qualit y:

With 20 years experience in board design and development, Starboard sets the very highest precision standard. Having an R&D team minutes away from some of the best surf spots in South Africa and our headquarters just 45 minutes away from our composite board supplier, we can control the R&D process and follow up on production on a daily basis.

Ou r M is s ion:

Bring innovation and stoke to surfers all around the world.

He has a passion for filmmaking and graduated from AFDA film school with the Best Cinematography Award. As the Multimedia Producer for Starboard he has turned his love for both the sea and film making into a career where he shoots and develops all the media content for the brand.

STARBOARD SURF A ct ive C arbon

The ACTIVE system features a carbon laminated STARFLEX Corecell stringer, suspended through the center of the board, between two high memory polypropylene layers. This acts like a dynamic spring allowing the shell laminate to flex freely, whilst preventing hyper-flexion under extreme load.

The ultra light biaxial and unidirectional carbons with optimized angles wrap the entire board, introducing increased flex and reflex patterns for overall surfing. A well-suited flex pattern with great reflex is essential for getting the most out of your wave riding. This is sensationally lightweight and increases overall manoeuvrability and speed.

The Flex Carbon construction is a revolutionary combination of modern and traditional board construction. The Flex Carbon construction combines a stringer-less polyurethane foam core that is laminated by hand using ultra light biaxial and unidirectional carbon, fiberglass cloth and the best quality epoxy resin.

This industry first further reinforces Starboards relentless quest of creating the most innovative and performancedriven surfboards. With the introduction of this unique technology comes the launch of three progressive shapes: Black Magic, Flying V and Anaconda. Extra reinforcement patches have been strategically placed around each board to improve its overall strength and durability.

ACTIVE CARBON TECHNOLOGY Overview

Our Active Carbon surfboards are a combination of classic design mixed with innovation. The flexibility of the board is adjusted by using different fiber orientations, carbon strengths, and outer/inner densities. These elements finetune the board’s ability to flex and return, allowing its user to surf fast, explosively and extremely responsively whether at an intermediate or advanced level.

The Active Stringer

The patent pending ACTIVE system features a carbon laminated STARFLEX Corecell stringer, suspended through the center of the board, between two high memory polypropylene layers. This acts like a dynamic spring, allowing the shell laminate to flex freely whilst preventing hyper-flexion under extreme load. Our Active Stringer is one of a kind and exclusive to Starboard.

The Core

The EPS core is a precision molded EPS foamcore (expanded polystyrene). When this lighter and stronger core is precision molded with our ultra light biaxial carbon fiber it allows for each surfboard made to maintain its performance properties for much longer than PU constructed surfboards.

Lightest, strongest and most responsive construction to date

The Construction

In order to find the key to achieving a flex pattern that is equal and in some instances better than that seen in normal PU Boards, our development team underwent 2 years of rigorous testing to find the perfect combination of fiber orientations, carbon strengths and outer/inner densities. The carbon fiber outer shell is designed to enhance the board’s responsiveness, allowing your surfing reaction time to become quicker and as a result provide you with more speed and drive when you need it most.

Durability

Our Active Carbon surfboards are constructed using custom designed high performance materials. Unlike any other surfboard on the market, our unique construction and strategic use of our customised performance materials radically decrease the chances of breakage or compressions.

FLEX CARBON TECHNOLOGY Overview

The Flex Carbon construction is a revolutionary combination of modern and traditional board construction. Flex Carbon combines a stringer-less polyurethane foam core that is laminated by hand using ultra light biaxial and unidirectional carbon, fiberglass cloth and the best quality epoxy resin.

The Construction

In order to find the key to achieving a flex pattern that is equal and in some instances better than that seen in a normal PU Board, our development team underwent a rigorous testing process to find the perfect combination of fiber orientations, carbon strengths and outer/inner densities. With the introduction of this unique technology comes the launch of three progressive shapes: Black Magic, Flying V and Anaconda.

The Core

Flex Carbon is built from a stringer-less traditional Polyurethane foam (PU) core. Starboard has played around with a variety of different densities of foam depending on the desired weight, flex and compressional stability. By having a traditional PU foam core, we have been able to match the flex components of a traditional build by removing the stringer and perfecting the use of different fiber patterns.

A more premium and quality alternative to traditional PU Surfboards

Durability

A full top-deck of our premium biaxial carbon fibres combined with our highgrade expanding epoxy resin gives all Flex Carbon boards a superior strength to normal PU boards. Extra reinforcement patches have been strategically placed around each board to improve its over all strength and durability.
