FROM AVERAGE TO STARTASTIC Many of the most stylish women in the world have not been great beauties , but have drawn from an enormous amount of self-confidence. Same thing goes with the women on this page. Their beauty may be up for debate, but not the confidence they exude.
INSPIRATION POINT 2:
It’s about who you ARE, not what you’re NOT!
Style comes from within,. It’s knowing who you are and who you want to be; not from wanting to be somebody else, or wanting to be thinner, shorter, taller, prettier. Take steps to exude confidence with every piece of clothing you wear.

Your guy may tell you that he prefers you not to wear make up but real talk, if you gave him the following pictures …

which one do you think he’d proudly show off to his family and friends?
?
????????????? The truth of the matter is that make-up can make a person, and lack thereof can break a person. Would YOU buy a magazine with picture A as the cover? Probably not so much. Not because she is unattractive, but because the look (or rather, lack thereof) is totally uninspiring. When people see you, they should be inspired. The complete look of who you are should entice people to want to draw in to you. And on ESPECIALLY sucky days, you know, when you wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Those should be the days you SERIOUSLY turn up the gusto when it comes to how you look. Remember, perception is reality. How people view you helps shape how people treat you.

FROM AVERAGE TO STARTASTIC : Make Up Tips by StarChild’s official make up artist, Danielle Carter of Phenomenal Phaces Have you always wanted your eyes to look like this, but didn’t know how to achieve the look?
Follow these steps to get a polished and airbrushed eyeshadow effect: First wash face with your normal cleaner then towel dry . Use desired moisturizer. Place a piece of tape on both sides of eyebrow coming all the way down towards the bottom (side) of the eye. The tape can be inexpensive like scotch tape, which does not hurt when pulling it off. Make sure that you do not place tape on eyebrows because OUCH! That will hurt! Apply the desired color using an eye shadow brush. For a more dramatic look apply more than one color; a light color for the lid and a dark color for the inner crease of the eye . Use a blending brush (I recommend MAC 224 blending brush) to blend both colors . Once colors are applied, remove tape from each side of the eye and voila! You should have the airbrush effect with beauty and perfection.

STARTASTIC MASCARA TIP Make sure eyelashes are clean and dry. Use an eyelash brush to detangle lashes. Using blue mascara, give fine strokes from underneath the lash line then begin to bring strokes to the tip of eyelash. Wait 2-3 minutes to avoid clumping, then apply a second coat. To complete the look, apply black mascara in the same method as the blue mascara. Make sure there is no clumping and eyelashes are free from sticking together using a plain eyelash brush. The use of the blue mascara gives the face a more dramatic look, leaving lashes looking blunt and thick and making your eyes pop !

FROM AVERAGE TO STARTASTIC Comfortable doesn't have to mean boring. Don't play it too safe. You should wake up in the morning and be inspired by what is in your wardrobe: 20 black skirts tend to offer little inspiration; one white beaded vintage skirt offers a lot. 4 Items your wardrobe should contain: a little black dress, classic white shirt, fitted dark denim jeans, black high heel pumps. Trends can be cool, but can also be overrated. If you do happen to fall in love with a trend, buy it now but wait a few years until it is "out of style" to wear it. The best time to buy is when you are travelling - something exotic that nobody else will have back home and can usually be picked up for next to nothing, because while fashion may be expensive, style doesn't have to be. Don’t sleep on flea markets, thrift stores, Goodwill and Salvation Army shopping. It’s cool to find pieces from these places that you can bet no one else will be rocking, and them mix them with something upscale or more contemporary to create a look all your own. Unpredictable is what is going to make you look different. Try diamonds with ethnic beads, stripes and checks, leather and lace, masculine with feminine. It takes time and trial to perfect but these "imperfect" mixes are what style is about. When rocking heels, don't go too high; if you can't walk, you will look ridiculous. And be wary of teaming very high heels with a very short skirt hardly anyone can pull this off without looking tramp-esque. Think big necklace or big earrings, not both. Finally, remember style is not about being perfect. Looking like you're always ready for a photoshoot is not style. Looking like you know how to live, how to have fun and how to let your hair down is. Practice having a purposefully deconstructed look; meaning something is always a bit off: Let your hair be slightly messy, wear unmatching accessories, wear your shirt slightly wrinkled. Perfection is over-rated. Looking good never is!

Brand Name Companies Go Bankrupt As consumers cut back, businesses are scrambling. 5 brands you know that are hitting the skids.
Crunch Gym Feels the Burn
Filene's Basement dresses down
New York City-based Crunch gym began as a basement aerobics studio in the East Village in 1989 -- one without locker rooms or air conditioning. Over the past 20 years, it has grown in popularity -- largely on a reputation for creative classes, such Hip-Hop Aerobics and Co-Ed Action Wrestling -- to 28 locations around the country. But in May the company filed for bankruptcy, citing unmanageable lease contracts. In bankruptcy records, the gym's parent company, AGT Crunch Acquisitions, said it had at least $500 million in assets and liabilities. The company has since entered into a purchase agreement with New Evolution Fitness Co., whose founder also started 24-Hour Fitness. The company has closed two gyms -one in New York and another in San Francisco. A third gym was shut down, but replaced with another new gym around the corner. Crunch plans to exit bankruptcy by the end of the summer.
This bargain basement may have passed on a few too many deals to its customers. Filene's Basement filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May with assets of up to $100 million and liabilities of as much as five times that amount. The company said the credit crunch coupled with consumers pulling back made its debt burden unmanageable. Fellow discount retailer Syms agreed to pay $65 million for the company, which was actually founded in a Boston basement in 1909. Syms bought 23 of the retailer's 25 store leases as well as its inventory -- which includes everything from Seven jeans to Prada merchandise. The stores will continue to operate under the Filene's Basement name.
Six Flags waves the white flag The economy has been quite the thrill ride for Six Flags. The New York Citybased amusement-park operator went belly-up in June, unable to spin off $2.4 billion in debt -- even on the Tilt-AWhirl. But never fear: The chain's 20 parks, which stretch from Montreal to Mexico City, will remain open. The Chapter 11 filing is "strictly a financial restructuring" of the company's debt, said President and CEO Mark Shapiro in a statement. The parks attracted 25 million visitors in 2008, and the company made $275 million. "Six Flags has been a favorite family destination for almost a half century. Our financial reorganization will best position our parks to entertain millions of guests for another 50 years," Shapiro added.
Eddie Bauer packs up - again The Washington-based clothing retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June. This is the company's second spin through the courts. Its previous owner, Speigel Catalog, which bought the company in 1988, had filed for Chapter 11 in 2003. When Spiegel emerged in 2005, Eddie Bauer was spun off and became a stand-alone company for the first time since it was first acquired, by General Mills, in 1971. When Eddie Bauer filed for bankruptcy, it claimed between $100 million and $500 million in assets, but just as much in liabilities. Eddie Bauer intends to sell the majority of its assets to CCMP Capital for $202 million, though bidding is still open. CCMP has agreed to keep the majority of the company's 371 stores open, as well as its catalogue and Web site operations. Gift cards, however, will only be honored until Sept. 1 or the company sells its assets -- whichever comes first.
Chicago Sun Times & Chicago Tribune The recession has cut into advertiser budgets, pulling vital dollars from an industry already being squeezed. The owner of the LA Times and the Chicago Tribune -- the Tribune Co. -- filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection at the end of 2008. The bankruptcy filling was intended to lighten the company's debt load, which Tribune said it has been carrying since it went private at the end of 2007. Tribune has offered no timeline for its exit from bankruptcy, but it is operating normally during the process. Among scores of other struggling media companies, the Sun-Times Media Group, which operates 59 newspapers throughout the country, filed for Chapter 11 protection at the end of March. The media group cites a drastic fall off in print revenue sales, a weak economy, and a tax burden wracked up by previous management as factors in the downfall. The Sun-Times Media Group has been slashing costs, but operations continue as the company looks for a buyer. .

Preheat a George Foreman grill. Place the game hen breast side down on a cutting board. Using scissors or poultry shears, cut from the neck to the tailbone to remove the backbone. Once you remove the backbone you will be able to see the inside of the bird. Make a small slit in the cartilage at the base of the breastbone to reveal the keel bone. Grab the bird with both hands on the ribs and open up like a book, facing down towards the cutting board. Remove the keel bone. Cut small slits in the skin of the bird behind the legs and tuck the drumsticks into them in order to hold them in place. Season on both sides with salt and pepper. Spray the bottom of the Grill with the nonstick cooking spray. Place the bird, skin side up onto the press, pray the skin side with non-stick cooking spray and close the lid. Top the press with a 10pound weight and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until the skin is golden brown. Allow to rest 3 minutes before serving.

STARTASTIC IS A GENDER NEUTRAL TERM In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.
For Guys Eyes Fashion Tips By: Eric B. Lewis
Thomas Jefferson
Women aren’t the only ones who have the right to be startastic. Below are some fashion tips to help men get their individual shine on:
Fashion field trips Do your research Pay attention to what celebrities are wearing. Take notice of the latest trends and within it find what works for you. If you like a specific item that you see a celeb wearing, search the Internet to find out how you too can own it. Subscribe to men’s fashion magazines to get inspiration mailed directly to you each month.
Looking to change up your style? One of the key things to remember when elevating your fashion style is to keep an open mind. You never know where style inspiration may strike. A good place to start is by taking a fashion field trip. Go in stores you normally don’t frequent and check out the displays, pay attention to the mannequins; go with the intention of looking and trying on clothes, not purchasing. If you routinely shop in the hood? Try checking out a high end department store. If you only shop at the mall? Try going to a boutique. If urban gear has been your thing, try going in a store that your Caucasian counterparts frequent. Make a conscious effort to venture in and see what their mannequins are wearing, what they have on display.
Personalize your style
Pre-Matched Outfits? ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Don’t be afraid to trick out an outfit. Go to craft and fabric stores to purchase small items to accent your clothes. Patches, letters, stones and other garnishes can add personal touches to outfits that will mark your style.
Outside of jogging and sweatsuits, steer clear of wearing pre-matched outfits. That is a surefire way to make sure you look like someone else in the room. Your goal is to stand out, not blend in. When you shop, take the time to find pieces that complement each other. Once you find out what you like, pulling an outfit together by yourself will come easy.
"When a guy takes off his coat, he's not going to fight. When a guy takes off his wristwatch, watch out!“
For Guys Eyes Fly watches for under $300
Men's watches as we now know them were not very popular until after World War II, when millions of men were issued small wristwatches by their respective armies as a means of coordinating - Al McGuire missions and generally keeping them organized. After the war, these men continued to wear their watches -- rather than carry them -- and the global wristwatch market was born.
(The hour is blue, the minute is red)
Since then, advancements in movements and materials have allowed watchmakers to create fashionable, utilitarian, and elegant timepieces for the various needs (or rather, wants) of men throughout the world. These advancements have also meant that one can buy an excellent Swiss-made watch for under $500, or a limited edition watch that can track several time zones at once with depth ratings of over 1,000 feet. Here we present some watches that will provide a good wrist look at a good wallet price.

The African Paradox THE BROKEN HEARTED PRAYER
In the mid-1990’s, 31 of Africa’s 53 countries were ravaged by civil war or serious civil unrest, yet there is no word for depression in most African languages. Africa lives with death and suffering and grief every day but to be alive is to talk and laugh, eat and drink and dance. Terrible times produce huge strength. Grief enhances joy. Death invigorate living.
(Pillow Anguish)
I’m lost without you I cannot breathe Not once did I think That you would leave I was too blind to see That your love wasn’t true And I never thought cheating was something you would do I adored you so much With my heart mind and soul And now that you’re gone My heart is not whole You took away a part of me That can never be recovered When will the pain of a broken heart mend? This I will soon discover…
So now I lay me down to sleep I pray to the Lord my soul to keep And if I should die before I wake I pray to the Lord my heart to take ….so no one else can break it -Genesis Jones -© 1997
An Eye on Public Health in the African American Community By: Tyra T. Ellis
Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired Clinical Depression and African American Women There are some in the African-American community who believe that depression is a sign of weakness and don’t view depression as a legitimate health concern. African American women may not realize that depression is not a weakness, but an illness often resulting from various reasons. According to Black Women’s Health, “Clinical depression is not a “mood” that someone can “snap out of.” Untreated depression is the root of disability in women, the main cause of suicide, and second only to heart disease. It is more widespread in women than in men, as a matter of fact, in the United States, the ratio is two to one. Depression is misdiagnosed and is often an intangible illness for African-American women who experience an abundance of depressions and relentless symptoms. According to Barbara Jones Warren, author of Examining Depression among AfricanAmerican women, she states that “If black women consult health professionals, they’re frequently told that they are hypertensive, run down, need exercise or are tense and nervous. African American women continue to complain of being tired, weary, empty, lonely, and sad. Other women friends and family members may say, “We all feel this way sometimes, it’s just the way it is for us Black women.” Those who have been assessed, said they were told that physically everything is fine, knowing that it wasn’t. They are often misdiagnosed, or may have withdrawn from treatment because of their ethnic, cultural and/or gender needs have not been met and they’re most likely not being available to participate in depression research studies. Involved in multiple roles, many African-American women have role conflicts between their family’s survival and their own developmental needs in order to make an effort to survive economically and improve themselves and their families through
mainstream society. This cultivated stress takes a toll on them and can produce an erosion of emotional and other physical health dilemmas. Several factors cause stress in women for instance taking on too many commitments at church, work or home; suffering financial stumbling blocks; and having agonizing disagreements with spouse, children and others. Purchasing a house, buying a car, getting married or having a baby can also be stressful. These situations, whether big or small, positive or negative all are causes of stress. Most of these women are single parents of multiple children, they often work outside the home and tend to work a second shift, take care of housework, children and older relatives and carry most of the load financially. It has been proven that on average women poorer than their male counterparts, notably single mothers with young children, many of whom don’t receive child support, and have to much to do in too little time. The good news is depression is treatable and there are combinations of causes that may cause people to feel depressed and that someone can’t just snap out of it but they may need to be assessed and treated. Children are no exception. Children as young as 3 and 4 years old can suffer from this illness. According to Dr. Charles Nemeroff, Emory University, there are several symptoms of depression, a very complex disease. Care you are concerned that you or someone you love may be suffering from depression? Take the depression self assessment quiz on the following page…

B.da speaks on her personal battle with depression The summer following my first year of college, I tried to commit suicide. Prescription drugs, a bottle of liquor and on overwhelming sense that life was not worth living, were the three things that were going to help lead me to an early grave. For as long as I can remember however, I had been more of a gray cloud than a ray of sunshine. Each diary I wrote in contained sad and melancholy passages, my arms and legs sported scars from where I had cut myself to relieve some of my inner pain. Thanks to the botched suicide attempt, I was able to understand the cause of all my angst and anguish. Turns out I wasn’t just a weird and emotional creature, but I was suffering from depression. With group and one-on-one therapy sessions and the right medication, I was able to get on the path to developing wholeness, joy and a positive outlook. Robin Thicke and Jazmine Sullivan Concert Review By: Walida McClendon-Britton Each summer, Chene Park Amphitheater in Detroit Michigan reserves its Fridays for smooth soul nights. Recently, I had the pleasure of seeing soulful Jazmine Sullivan open up for the most amazing white boy singing today, Robin Thicke. Jaz opened up her set by singing, “Bust Ur Windows”. Her voice is so powerful, I believe she could do a whole concert without a mic. She freaked the song by performing it to a slower beat, leaving me actually feeling sympathetic towards her, even though she was busting out someone’s windows. Toward the end of the song, they turned up the tempo and finished rocking it out. Jaz’s look was hot! She strutted across the stage in a pair of black and gold stacked stilettos that I couldn’t bare to walk in! Her set wasn’t long, as she was just the opening act but I was glad she performed, “I Want Your Best Friend….SWITCH!” the one song on her CD that she said, “…didn’t quite fit, but everyone liked.” It had a totally different feel than all of her songs and added a touch of diversity to her already great show. Should you get the chance to ever catch Jazmine Sullivan live, you will definitely not be disappointed. Now, when Robin Thicke hit the stage, screams filled the air! Everyone was on their feet. He was accompanied by a live band and kick butt female saxophone player that totally earned my ears’ respect. He opened with the song, “Magic” and then went right into his older hit “Want 2 Luv U Girl”. One of my favorites was his performance of “I Want Everything” from his second album. The Latin beat, vibrant hook and the horns were absolutely amazing. Of course Robin ripped the keys off his beautiful black piano. In the course of his nearly 2 hour set, he talked about how as he wrote his song, “DreamWorld” Barack Obama had announced that he would be running for President. He confessed that he thought that would be a dream deferred, but how excited he is that we are actually living it. My favorite line from this song? ” I wish the world would treat my wife right Robin paid homage to the King of Pop by performing “Human Nature” a cappella. He also did Jodeci’s “Come and Talk to Me” a cappella. As the show was coming to an end, Robin introduced the band. Outro An elder Native American was teaching his grandchildren about life. He said to them, "A fight is going on inside me.. it is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.“ "This same fight is going on inside you, and inside every other person, too", he added. The Grandchildren thought about it for a minute and then one child asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?" The old Cherokee simply replied... "The one you feed."
