Joseph’s older brothers were SUPER-DUPER Jealous of him. The mean brothers tricked their dad into taking Joseph away, and then tossed him in a deep dark well. After a couple of days, a caravan of men found Joseph inside the well and took the young boy to Egypt. 4
“SLAVES FOR SALE!” The men hollered. “SLAVES FOR SALE!” The caravan men agreed to sell Joseph at the slave market. People gathered around to peek at the new young slaves. It was ‘Al-Aziz’, one of the richest rulers in Egypt, who bought Joseph from the slave market and took him home.
6
‘Al-Aziz’, also known as the Potiphar, was a very powerful and important man. He lived in a huge castle with his wife. Unfortunately, they had no children of their own. 8
“You will not be treated as a slave in this house, my son!” ‘Al-Aziz’ told Joseph. “Thank you for your kindness, sir” Joseph said politely. ‘Al-Aziz’ ordered his guards to NEVER treat Joseph as a slave. He asked his wife to treat Joseph as a son, and make sure he is comfortable and happy. 10
Many years passed by, and Joseph grew up to be a strong, and an EXTREMELY handsome man. “WOW! He looks like a prince from a magical fairytale!” Some people said. “WOW! He looks like an angel sent from heaven!” Other people said. “WOW! He’s the most beautiful man in the WHOLE WORLD!” Everyone repeated over and over again. 12
Al-Aziz’s wife liked Joseph a lot, but she wanted him to do things that UPSET Allah. “If you don’t do everything I say, no matter how bad it is, I will put you in PRISON!” Al-Aziz’s wife said angrily. “I would rather go to prison than do anything that upsets Allah!” Joseph said calmly. 14
“TAKE HIM TO PRISON NOW!” Al-Aziz’s wife ordered the guards. Inside prison, Joseph met two men; one of them used to be the king’s cook and the other used to be the king’s server. The two men were in prison because they upset the king of Egypt. 16
Joseph was known for his wisdom amongst his friends in prison. He taught them all about the Oneness of Allah. One day, the cook had a strange dream and asked Joseph to explain it. “Your dream means you will be punished.” Joseph said wisely. The server also had a strange dream, and asked Joseph to explain it. “Your dream means you will be freed from prison soon! You will go back to work for the king.” Joseph told the server. 18
Time went by, the cook was punished and the server was freed from prison! Joseph’s was RIGHT! Allah blessed Joseph with the talent of explaining dreams. “Tell your king about me!” Joseph told the server when they said their goodbyes. Nevertheless, when the server went back to work at the royal palace, he TOTALLY forgot about Joseph’s request. 20
Several years later, the king of Egypt had the STRANGEST dream! The king dreamt of seven skinny cows eating up another seven FAT cows. He also dreamt of seven green corns-on-the-cobs next to seven dried-up Corns-on-the-cobs. “HOW WEIRD!” The king said, “What does this dream mean?” He asked his advisors. 22
“Maybe it was a nightmare your majesty!” One of his advisors said. “Maybe it doesn’t mean anything, your majesty!” Others said. “Sorry but we don’t know how to explain the meanings of dreams!” 24
Suddenly the King’s server remembered Joseph. “I know someone who can explain your dream,” The server finally said happily. “Give me your permission your majesty, and send me to him as he is imprisoned. I am sure he can help you explain your dream.” (Based on the meaning of Surat Yusuf, Chapter 12 Verse 45 Holy Qur’an)
26
The server went to visit Joseph in prison and asked him to explain the king’s dream meant. “You will easily plant plenty of crops for seven whole years! And then the NEXT seven years will be difficult years of drought with hardly any crops at all!” Joseph explained. “Tell the king he should prepare for the seven difficult years! He MUST store up on food and grains during the first seven years, or everyone will be so hungry later on!” 28
The King was surprised when the server came back with Joseph’s explanation. “That ‘Joseph’ man sounds like he’s VERY smart and wise!” The king said, “Bring him to me AT ONCE!” 30
“I will not leave prison until my innocence is proven!” Joseph told the king’s server. “Go back to your king and ask him to find out the truth!”
32
The server hurried again back to give the message to the king. “GET ME THE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN JOSEPH’S IMPRISONMENT AT ONCE!” Commanded the king. No surprise, Al-Aziz’s wife was sent forth for questioning. “Why did you put Joseph in prison?” The king asked her curiously. “I wanted him to upset Allah,” Al-Aziz’s wife cried. “I was wrong! I was not being fair to Joseph, I sent him to prison knowing he was innocent. May Allah forgive me.” 34
The king ordered the guards to let Joseph out of prison. He did not belong there! Joseph was innocent and never did ANYTHING wrong. “You are an honest man Joseph!” The king told him. “From this day on, you will be the new ruler of Egypt! And you will live in a beautiful palace!” 36
In the seven rich years that followed, Joseph stored up on food and grains for the whole country and even more. In the following seven poor years of hunger, people came to the storage house asking for their shares of food. Joseph was RIGHT AGAIN! “Thank you! You saved our lives, your highness! Everyone thanked Joseph. 38
In those seven poor years, people from different countries were getting hungry, too! There was no food to eat AT ALL! Back in Palestine, where Joseph used to live with his family, everyone was becoming so miserable! “We heard there is A LOT of food in Egypt! People in Palestine told each other. 40
Ten brothers were quickly running out of food. They decided to travel to Egypt to meet the new ruler and ask him for help. They had absolutely NO IDEA the new ruler they were about to meet…was actually their brother…
