Dear Friends,

Basel Art

We are caught in the midst of the greatest challenge the world has encountered since World War II. We all have thoughts and ideas how this period affects our outlook on life. It is safe to say, we have learned to appreciate the smaller things in life. We are spending quality time with our nearest and dearest in our beautiful homes. And quality is what we learned to value. Prevalent consumerism is the antithesis to old and trusted values of longevity and quality. Today, everyone is looking for the “same day delivery” option. Not long after the online shopping spree, and your parcel arrives at the doorstep, with the latest chinese-made gadget, the initial pleasure dissipates. Soon thereafter, like most of these items, your spontaneous buy finds its way into the recycling bin. Antiques, as presented in the magazine, were crafted in an era where labour was not measured by corporate productivity quotas. The production required patience and the calibre of the workmanship mattered. Now is the perfect time to invest again in quality. The unique collectables in this magazine reflect this ethos: Treasuring timeless values.

Aron Orzel

With best wishes,

CEO

Rimonim

Adornments are used to signal the Torah’s holy presence, glorify the sacredness of the text, beautify a ritual com-

mandment (hiddur mitzvah), and protect the parchment scroll. Major holidays and ceremonial milestones in Jewish life were—and still are—opportunities to dress the Torah

scroll with even more elaborate items. While the form and appearance of these adornments varies from one commu-

nity to another, there are several common objects. Wooden staves (called “trees of life,” or atzei hayyim) attach to the Torah scroll like handles for support. They accommodate the

scroll’s shifting proportions and allow the leader of the ser-

vices (shaliach tzibbur) to easily unroll the parchment to the

designated Torah portion. The staves can be embellished with finials (rimmonim) and bells, which are used to signal

the presence of the Torah in its procession from the ark to the reading platform. They may also reference the bells that adorned the hem of the High Priest’s robe in the ancient Temple described in the Book of Exodus, 22: 33–34.

Spice Towers

The use of sweet-smelling herbs and spices roused the creative instincts of artisans and they fashioned spice boxes in widely varied designs and shapes in gold, silver, brass, glass and wood. In Ashkenazi circles, the spice box took many forms, from flowers to miniature trains. Most popular, however, from around the sixteenth century, was the tower form, which was stylistically influenced by local architecture According to rabbinic legend, each Jew receives a special soul (neshama yetera) on the Sabbath. As this extra spiritual dimension departs from the body at the close of the Sabbath, one is overcome with a certain degree of sorrow. The spices are interpreted as a means of comfort at the moment of transition to the new week. As it was customary in ancient

times to welcome the Sabbath with branches of myrtle, so during the service to usher out the Sabbath ‘the Havdalah ceremony’ people inhaled the fragrances of their branches. In the course of generations, aromatic spices (most popularly cinnamon and cloves in Ashkenazi communities) began to replace the myrtle.
