Cheerleadingd GOVERNOR GREETINGS As Governor of the State of Washington, I am pleased to welcome back Union High School in Vancouver, WA. The school system provides wonderful opportunities for young girls to participate in promoting school spirit and camaraderie. Through participating in school sports and activities, today’s young people are able to gain some very important values: the principles of teamwork, respect, loyalty, discipline, and honest, hard work. Along with getting a good education, these values are key in a child’s future success. Any program which enhances a young person’s potential, character and self-esteem deserves support and recognition. I applaud the parents, coaches and other supporters for their leadership and commitment to providing young girls with opportunities for success. I commend your willingness to share your tine and talents with these young ladies. The support, strength and guidance you provide now will leave a positive effect on their lives for years to come. Best wishes for the future! Sincerely,

Cheerleadingd PRINCIPALʟS CONNOTATION WE ARE UNION! Once again we look forward to the upcoming school year with great anticipation as our Titan Cheerleaders continue to strive for excellence on the sidelines and as they compete in the state championships. Each year I have parents, officials and spectators comment on the amazing job the Titan Cheer squad does as they cheer our teams into victory. Our "wall" of cheerleaders on the sidelines is unsurpassed by other schools. And we all know what a great year Titan Cheer had kicking off 2011 by winning FIRST IN STATE at the WIAA State Championship competition. Titan Cheer has eleven members from the competition squad returning this year, and eight NCA All Americans – we at Union are looking forward to another great year of Titan Cheerleading! It is with pleasure and great pride that I dedicate this Media Guide to the Union Titan Cheerleaders and Coaching Staff. Go Titans!
PURPOSE OF UNION TITAN CHEERLEADING The cheerleading team at Union will strive to boost school spirit, promote good sportsmanship, develop good, positive crowd involvement and help student participants and spectators achieve the most worthwhile experience. The program will be that of high standards and team cohesiveness. Titan Cheerleaders will: 1. Demonstrate character and discipline in their academic and athletic venue. 2. Maintain a competitive edge that will serve to develop leadership, confidence and skill. 3. Perform and compete with the heart of a true athlete.
Sincerely,
Brian Grimsted Principal Union High School
The Union Cheer Boosters started in early September 2008 to work with the Union Cheer coaching staff and cheerleaders to procure funding for each year.
Cheerleadingd To appreciate where we’re going... ...You need to know where we’ve been...
UNION HIGH HISTORY
In the beginning...It's been half a century since young Vern Toedtli roamed the campus of East Mill Plain Union High School, a landmark long ago swept away by progress and suburban sprawl. Abernathy, Class of 1952, and other Mill Plain Union alumni also have dusted off six lettered athlete's sweaters and large class photographs once displayed in the original school building. She and others pushed the district last year to resurrect the Union High name, and easily won their way. Union Principal Brian Grimsted is tickled to launch the building with a sense of history and strong local support, they add. "He says we're the only new high school that comes with built-in alumni," Abernathy said. Vern Toedtli said it was a snap to strip the bell of Evergreen High's greenand-gold paint in favor of a silver cast-iron finish. He added the silver when he saw rust quickly form once the old paint was sandblasted off. The silver actually fits nicely with Union's silver, black and red color scheme. "It's chimed through the county a lot of years," Toedtli said. Not so much in its later years, Abernathy recalled, although she believes it was rung following a magnitude 7.0 earthquake near Olympia in 1949 that shook all of Clark County and caused the school's evacuation. Now lacking a clapper, the bell remains a strong, silent symbol. About 2 feet high, Union's heavy bell was forged at the American Bell Foundry Co. in Northville, MI., and is stamped "No. 24." An Internet search finds the firm on Detroit's outskirts cranked out thousands of school, church and fire bells in the 1800s and 1900s. ...into the future! More than 200 people attended the ribbon cutting ceremony at Union High School, August 22, 2007. The event officially dedicated the new school and offered many in the community their first opportunity to tour the campus. Student representatives Kristina Pravisay and Kaitlin Provinsal (a UHS cheerleader!) welcomed guests to the school and introduced new Union Principal Brian Grimsted. “We look forward to Union High School joining our other high schools, Evergreen, Mountain View and Heritage in fostering an environment where students learn and leave prepared to be worldcompetitive in whatever they choose to do.”
HOW TO BECOME A TITAN CHEERLEADER At Union, the squad is selected by the coaching staff. Candidates are evaluated in the areas of skill, work ethic, personality, and potential. While this may not be the way many programs operate, it is in fact, how most sports programs choose their teams. There is no set number of boys or girls that can make the team. It depends on performance and skill level. Candidates for Titan Cheer Squads are scored in the following areas: • Dance - rhythm, execution, accuracy, body awareness • Motions - strong, placement accuracy, sharpness • Tumbling - all skills are encouraged, tumbling shows body control, stamina, and athletic ability • Jumps - (Front Hurdler, Toe Touch, and Side Hurdlers) height, form, strength • Personality/Attitude - positive sportsmanship, good rapport with potential teammates, and personality during performances • Grades - must maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher • Potential - the most important element that we are looking for...can we develop you into a Titan Cheerleader? # Cheerleaders have options to cheer for football, basketball, and/ or competition. Cheerleaders need to meet a minimum requirement of games and events to meet the eligibility requirement for the WIAA.

Cheerleadingd FEATURE ARTICLE The Story of the Spirit Stick It began at an NCA Cheer camp back in 1954 when one team stood out among the rest. It wasn't for their talents, rather for their attitudes. They couldn't keep up with the others. They weren't coordinated or technically skilled. But they were the backbone of the camp; they were always the first to arrive in the morning to class and the last to leave, they were always cheering everyone else one, they always had the best attitude and they worked great as a team. What they symbolized was far more than any display of technical skill or talent. They represented the pure essence at the very core of cheerleading; they stood for spirit in every sense of the word. However, their spirited performance wasn't the kind the NCA scoring process recognized with a ribbon of excellence, a praise every other team would receive. Yet it was this team's vibrant, positive energy that bolstered the camp, a creed Lawrence "Herkie" Herkimer wanted to instill in the NCA. Knowing he couldn't just up and change the scoring and award process, "Herkie" was in a quandary. He quickly needed something to acknowledge the impact the team had on the others. In expressing his desire to the other instructors, "Herkie" spontaneously reached for a twig off a tree and declared it the official "Spirit Stick". He knew that as awesome as the team was, they wouldn't care if they were handed a simple stick.

Cheerleadingd The NEW Acrobatics and Tumbling Program seeks Emerging Sport Status from NCAA
FEATURE ARTICLE
A group of six universities from across the United States have come together to form the National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association (NCATA), which will act as the governing body and coaches association for competitive cheer’s evolution into an NCAA sport. The current members include the head coaches and administrators from Azusa Pacific, University of Oregon, University of Maryland, Baylor University, Quinnipiac University and Fairmont State. The goal of the NCATA is to usher stunts and gymnastics into NCAA emerging sports status and eventually, a fully sanctioned varsity sport with an NCAA sponsored national championship. NCATA’s first step towards achieving their goal was revolutionizing the standard meet format. “Creating this sport at the varsity collegiate level has always been about meeting the interests and abilities of hundreds of thousands of young women that participate in the sport nationally at the high school and club levels,” said Mike Bellotti, University of Oregon Athletics Director. “Giving women an opportunity to compete and perform at the collegiate level is not only exciting and rewarding, but consistent with our goal of providing more opportunities for female student-athletes by starting a sport that has the potential for tremendous growth.” Based on the most recent high school sports participation survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations, competitive spirit squads have 117,793 participating student-athletes nationwide, making it the ninth most popular women’s sport. With a new meet format, scoring system and statistics, the NCATA will help to provide a collegiate athletics experience for an ever-growing base of high school stunts and tumbling student-athletes.
THE NEW SPORT ACROBATICS AND TUMBLING The six rounds of an official National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association sponsored meet, listed in order of competition: Compulsory: Each team competes a preset round of Toss, Pyramid, Acro and Tumbling Acro: Three athletes hoist, one balances in the air. Includes four different heats for each team with compulsory elements in each heat. Thirty seconds per heat, and team is awarded the average score of combined heats. Toss: One flyer is tossed into the air, and four others wait below to catch her. Pyramid: The compulsory heat has a max of 24 athletes creating a 4-2-1 structure, followed by an optional round, which can be 20-plus athletes creating three stable pyramids, three people high, to be completed in one minute. Tumbling: Includes six different “passes” for each team, with the first being a duo (two tumblers) pass, trio, quad, solo aerial, solo front entry and finally a wild card pass where a tumbler can perform any desired stunt. Team Event: A routine set to music and performed by the entire team in 2-1/2 minutes. This is the most subjective of the six events and the most like a traditional competitive cheer event. This scoring system will allow the NCATA to award postseason honors, such as an AllAmerica team, to these student-athletes.

PREPARING FOR COLLEGIATE CHEERLEADING It is a cheerleading coach's greatest accomplishment to send their athletes to a great college cheerleading program. The following steps can be used to help athletes into the world of college cheerleading: 1. List schools of interest and rank them in order. (Rank the schools first for academic programs and then for their cheerleading program) 2. Research each school's cheerleading requirements and decide if the requirements are attainable. 3. Contact the Head Coach or Advisor. Make sure to ask them the following questions: # a. Are try-outs by invitation only? # b. How can I qualify for an # # invitation? # c. Will I need to travel for try-outs, # or can I submit a video? ***Traveling out of state to a tryout shows commitment and drive. Attending a tryout in person greatly increases an Athlete's chance of making a squad. #
d. What do I need to wear to try# outs? How do I prepare my hair? # e. Are there any preliminary # # workshops or clinics that I can # attend to prepare for try-outs? # f. What are requirements after you # have made the team for costs? # School? Practices? Games? 4. Apply to the school of choice. Apply to several different schools and make sure applications get into the schools early. Many squads require an acceptance letter at tryouts!

Answer: This is possible, and there are 2 ways to do it: Solution 1: Fill the 3 cup bucket, pour it into the 5 cup bucket. Fill the 3 cup bucket again, and pour it into the 5 cup bucket until the 5 cup bucket is full. That will leave exactly 1 cup of sugar in the 3 cup bucket. Dump out the 5 cup bucket, and dump the 1 cup from the 3 cup bucket into the empty 5 cup bucket. This leaves 1 cup in the 5 cup bucket. Now fill the 3 cup again and add it to the 5 cup bucket. Now you have exactly 4 cups of sugar in the 5 cup bucket! Solution 2: Fill the 5 cup bucket. Pour it into the 3 cup bucket. This leaves 2 cups in the 5 cup bucket. Dump out the 3 cup bucket. Now pour the 2 cups from the 5 cup into the 3 cup. Refill the 5 cup. Now pour the 5 cup into the 3 cup until the 3 cup is full. That will leave exactly 4 cups in the 5 cup bucket!
You are in a cookie factory, and need to make a huge batch of chocolate chip cookies. The recipe calls for exactly 4 cups of sugar. Problem is that you have two buckets. One is 5 cups, the other is 3 cups. Using these buckets, can you measure exactly 4 cups of sugar? How?
Answer: Three. In the worst case, the first two socks you take out will consist of one black sock and one white sock. The next sock you take out is guaranteed to match one or the other.
Your sock drawer contains 24 white socks and 30 black socks. The lights in your room are off, so you cannot see the color of the socks. How many socks must you grab to ensure to have at least one matching pair?
Answer: White. The only place you can hike 3 miles south, then east for 3 miles, then north for 3 miles and end up back at your starting point is the North Pole. There are only polar bears in the north pole, and they are white!
I left my campsite and hiked south for 3 miles. Turned east and hiked for 3 miles. Then turned north and hiked for 3 miles, at which time I came upon a bear inside my tent eating my food! What color was the bear?
Answer: Mt. Everest. It was still the highest in the world - it just hadn't been discovered yet!
Before Mt. Everest was discovered, what was the highest mountain in the world?
Answer: Whatever color your hair is! Remember, you are the bus driver!
You are driving a bus. At the first stop, 2 women get on. The second stop, 3 men get on and 1 woman gets off. Third stop, 3 kids and their mom get on, and a man gets off. The bus is grey, and it is raining outside. What color is the bus drivers hair? Answer: 6. 3 for each team.
In baseball, how many outs are there in an inning?
Answer: I can predict the score BEFORE it begins. Well, the score before any football game is always zero to zero!
I do not have any special powers, but I can predict the score of any football game before it begins. How can I do this? In a year there are 12 months. 7 months have 31 days. How many months have 28 days?
Answer: They all do.
Answer: Second Place. If you pass the person in second, you take second place, and they become third.
You are a cyclist in a cross-country race. Just before the crossing finish line you overtake the person in second place! What place did you finish in?

Cheerleadingd COACHES CORNER Coaching has brought so much into my life.
One of the most important aspects of cheerleading is spirit
Union cheerleading has quickly developed into one of the
and fun. Since cheerleading is a year round athletic activity, the possibilities of burnout are very high. It is important to maintain a light hearted and fun program that encourages cheerleaders to stick with it for their high school experience. This is possible by becoming highly active in the community, being competitive throughout the state, supporting the athletic teams, creating fun experiences at games, school, and practice. Team bonding and relationships are also critical for maintaining motivation and drive for constant growth and development.
Not only do I teach what I love but I work with young ladies who are growing to love to cheer. Cheerleading allows me to build character, HEART, competitive edge, and positive life skills within these young ladies. The relationships I develop with these young ladies are so memorable, and every young lady that comes through my program leaves a lasting impression in my heart. They are amazing individuals with so much pride, spirit, support, and commitment. I admire all of them!
strongest cheerleading programs in Southwest Washington. The 2011/2012 squad has 46 girls that make up the junior varsity, varsity, and competition squads. In January of this year, the 2010/2011 Titan Competition Squad won first place and brought home the Washington 4A State Championship trophy. That is an amazing feat for a squad with only four years or less of experience behind it.
One
key component to the success of our program is communication between cheerleaders, parents, teachers, community members and coaching staff. We stress the importance of communicating with our athletes to help teach responsibility. Cheerleaders learn ways to communicate and how to present themselves positively, which will help them in the future when communication becomes an integral part of their lives. Through interactions, they learn how to communicate, motivate, handle conflicts and control their own emotions. These traits will be valuable in dealing with family, friends and future coworkers.
It
is important that respect is also demonstrated daily, between all cheerleaders and coaching staff. As coaches of Union Cheer, we expect respect from our athletes, and in return we will value their voices and treat our cheerleaders with mutual respect. The respect that coaches show to their cheerleaders can impact lifelong skills and self image. Within the character trait of respect, cheerleaders learn to deal with different personalities and people. They discover the happiness of helping others and the need to give back to their community.
"If it's in your heart, it shows in your spirit." -Author Unknown
Cheerleaders will learn how to overcome differences for the good of the team. They learn delegation, ways to involve others, and different types of motivation. Cheerleading helps to build self-confidence. Learning life lessons through experiences leads to confidence in oneself. Cheerleaders recognize that they learn from both achievements and failure. These are all part of life. The more experiences that cheerleaders are given, the better they can cope with what life gives to them in the future. They learn to handle a challenge, overcome a problem, and work with people.
I
encourage these young ladies to seek out cheerleading programs at the college level, because not only can it help with scholarship, but it sets them up for leadership possibilities, and an immediate resume of community service and character development. Cheerleading at the collegiate level can help take these girls into a high level of scholar aptitude and athletic capabilities. They have opportunities to meet people that will have a great impact on their lives and can help guide them into becoming successful members of their communities.
The most important element that a great cheerleader must have is HEART. This is a rare occurrence in athletes and only the true athletes have the passion and love for a sport where they can actually demonstrate HEART. HEART is the ultimate love for what they do. Athletes must be completely immersed in desire to improve, commit, perform, and lead their team. It is inspiring to me, as a coach, when I can work with a cheerleader that truly demonstrates the qualities of a true athlete with HEART.

Cheerleadingd DONORS AND SPONSORS Never in the history of the world was there a family so intimately associated with a great cultural revolution as the Medici Family, the famous Florentine bankers who subsidized and endowed the Italian Renaissance. The Union High Cheer Boosters has formed it’s own “Medici Circle” as a way to recognize the benevolence of sponsors who have substantially funded the UHS Cheer Organization. Those gifting a substantial amount to our group will be recognized as part of this prestigious family.

Dedicated to our Coaches Our accomplishments are extraordinary and our victories are many, but we think of our coaches as mentors, friends and molders of character. Their knowledge, character and rare capacity for finding and motivating the hidden skills of young athletes have inspired us all. While we look up to our coaches as we laugh, cry, work and play together we learn their quality of character. We cheer because it is fun. Ask any one of us: we love the friendship, family and fellowship. We love the 驶game始. Coach taught us that! We win with class and we lose with class. We are champions on and off the field. That始s who we are. We are cheerleaders. We are Titan champions.
